English Movie Library

FREE CHOICE ENGLISH MOVIE LIBRARY

http://engedu.sysu.org.cn/graduate/holistics/index.html

To facilitate autonomous learning strategies, the Sun Yat-sen University department of post-graduate English teaching for non-English majors has created an English movie library. All of the movies are English language with English or no subtitles. (There are absolutely no Chinese subtitles because they hinder English acquisition.)

The movies may only be accessed through campus computers, by students of the Holistic English Program and may not be downloaded.

All movies have been screened for compliance with Chinese law that prohibits excessive foul language, nudity or violence.

If you would like to see a movie added to the library, post your suggestion below.

  • Jack Class 13

Thank you taught us a good way to learn English. We discuss the movie in a relaxed and pleasant environment in your class.I benefit alot from that.Thank you very much!

  • Charlie.15

yes, you’re right,it was useless to learn enlish wiht chinese subtitles. After watching several movies on the list, i found that with English subtitles help me lot, and i have got used to English titles. It was so intereting when my roomate told me that i was speaking English in midnight when i was sleeping. Wow, i was dreaming English!! Thank you very much ,i feel more confident than ever.
And here, i want to introduce “brave heart” to you, i like the movie, the music and the actor very much !

  • Vincent-class14

In the past we have learned English by textbooks. This way makes me feel bored. Learning English by movies can not only improve our English, but also entertain ourselves. So it is my favorite way. I’m very pleased for so many movies. Thank you. I will make my effort to watch more movies and get a great progress in English.

  • Shirney Class7

This term I have saw so many old movies that could help me to know the culture in history.Of course, seeing movie is a good way to improve our English,it is full of so many interests that we can learn English easily. Thanks for your movie!

  • James 13

Thank you for your hard word !You must spend much time doing the list! It is impossible for us each movie. But I will see more films as I can. I have made a plan that each week I will see a film at least .I believe that my English will better and better!

  • Constance Class 4

I appreciate all your work for us, but I have a problem.
Are these movies legal? Did you buy them?

  • Michael Class 18

All I want to say is: thank you, Professor Martin! You have done so much meticulous work for us to learn English well. What I have learned are not only convenient movies, but also your work spirit which deeply moved me. I learned a lot from you! Thank you again!

  • Shirley2_class4

I am impressed for these excellent movies. Thank you very much for providing a list so many splendid and helpful movies. In these movies, I can learn some interesting culture differences and enjoy learning English.

  • Sam class 17

Wonderful! I’m a kind of person that crazy about movies. I appreciate Prof. Wolff ‘s effort to provide us with so many impressive movies. Firstly, the movies are easy to download, the speed is high enough. Secondly, I used to watch movies with Chinese subtitles, but as I watch the ones downloaded from English Movie Library, I figure that there are no subtitles or only English subtitles. At first, I am not quite used to them, but after several movies, I find my listening has improved a lot. I enjoy the movie plot as well as the pronunciation. Watching movies is a good way to make progress in listening and speaking English.

  • Jocelyn class 18

Honestly speaking, I didn’t know they were all classical until I watched these movies. I like them!
It is difficult to listen English lines and read English subtitles before. But I think that’s no problem now. So all I want to say is “Thank you”!

  • Helen class 18

Thank you very much for your hard work!!!!!! I like English movie very much, but there are so many English movies that I am confused about how to choose them sometimes. Now the problem was solved. what’s more, the movies are easy to download, the speed is high enough. The movies are with English subtitles, so I improve my English when watching it not just for fun.

  • Lucy Class14

Thank you for you sharing with us the movie! It is fantastic! And from the movie, i learn much about something i never know before.

  • Iris class14

Thank you very much for sharing so many movies with us!Generally speaking,I do not know most of the movies before and these movies are qiute old.But I learned much from the movie that we watched this term and I am interesting in others.

  • Shelly class O2

I love watching movies and American teleplays. If I had to choose one ,I prefer teleplays ecause the conversations are more easy –to –understand. I think desperate housewives are the good series to learn English. I know Matin wants us to learn something when we have fun in watching Movies. We can discuss movies. Thank you very much.

  • selina5

Actually I learned a lot from these moves. These movies cover many different fields, therefore I have enlarged my eyesight after watched these movies. So I think it is a good idea to improve our English through the way of watching movies. Some movies are so interesting that I got really entertained by them.

  • Charlie-class 5

Thanks for all of the films. I think it contains the hope of our lovely teacher. So we can not lose our teacher’s heart and also can not lose our own heart. We should know more about this world by seeing these movies and broaden our view and strengthen our skills of English such as listening, vocabulary, speaking and so. There is really a big fortune waiting for us to search and find.

  • Eva class 13

I think it’s a better way to learn English by watching English movie. Before you watch the movie, you’d better make preparations for it. And when you are watching it, you’d better not see the Chinese captions. After watching it, I think there is nothing better than writing a note about it. So in the process, your English level is increased unconsciously.

  • lillian-class7

This is a good channel for us to learn English. We can learn many useful infornmation from the movie. The movie was so interesting and meaningful,we can teach through lively activities. This web site provide a Convenient place for us to download. We can sve time and expand eyesight. When you have watched the movie, you can understand the content more clearly.Thank you for our teacher provide such web site for us to search and find.

  • Bob class 16

It’s not until you see the movie that you recognize the role that a movie play in the English learning! It’s not only benefit your oral English but also your listening, reading and writing English. Frankly speaking, I like the English movie, I like the feeling surround by English sound during watching the English movie. On the other hand, even you may not get benefit from the movie for your English learning, you can still pleasure yourself during watching it. It’s really enjoyable! In fact, in most time you just get benefit or improve your English unconsciously.

  • Yolanda Class9

Thanks a lot. Thanks for all the people who gave the efforts on this library before.

  • Emma Class17

    EDITOR’S NOTE:
AT PRESENT ONLY THE 32 HOLISTIC ENGLISH WORKBOOK MOVIES ARE AVAILABLE.
THERE ARE AN ADDITIONAL 550 MOVIES THAT WERE SUPPOSED TO BE AVAILABLE ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE SEMESTER BUT STAFF HAS NOT ACCOMPLISHED THIS IMPORTANT TASK EVEN TO THIS DAY. THIS HAS FORCED CERTAIN CHANGES IN THE HOLISTIC ENGLISH PROGRAM THAT WERE NOT TO THE STUDENTS’ ADVANTAGE. FRANKLY, I AM OUTRAGED AT THE “SO-SO” ATTITUDE.

It’s a new method for me to study English with movies. Though I ever heard of a similar method to learn English by watching movies, I seldom focus the background, moral but the plot in the movies. And we seldom discussed about the movies with deep thinking. I learned a lot in this semester and the Holistic English course. On the other hand, more new movies could be added to English movie library. In recent years, many interesting and meaningful movies were made and they are worthy watching.

  • ivanclass14

Thank you, Martin! Thanks for your movie Library. It really help me to acquire English.
If I would suggest a movie added to the library, there is no one I will recommend but THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT. It is really superb. I think every Chinese student would enjoy it.

  • Jimclass14

Firstly, my great thanks should be expressed to you, my dear professor, for lots of wonderful films and all your efforts. It is amazing to see so many outstanding films which can be extremely helpful to improve my English. All the films are so meaningful and worthy to be seen, most of which are my favorites. What’s more, seeing films is an awfully effective way to make progress in learning English. Accordingly, I will make full use of the resources, and cause my English better and better. Thank you very much!

  • Lucy-class13

It should be thankful that our professor has made a great effort to work out the English movie library, so that we students can share the movie freely. In the past I saw the movie only focusing on the Chinese subtitle, but now I am falling in to the habit of looking at the English subtitle. Even sometimes I don’t catch the meaning, I would try to do that, because it really does good to my English study. By the way I think the English movie library is a good way to learn English. It enhances our interest to English with fun. In my opinion the special library will take the double effect, just as shoot two hawks with one arrow.

  • Zaneclass4

Thanks for the movie library and the great effort our professor made in it. Finally I find a place that I can get movie freely with English subtitles only. In the past, the movie I downloaded in other place always had Chinese subtitles and watching a movie while gazing at Chinese subtitles didn’t improve my English much. At last, I find a place to help me solve this problem. I believe my English will be better through this library.

  • Robert Class4

We all know that language learning is very boring, especially when you have not find a good way to fit it.In my opinion, watching the foreign films (do not translate dubbing) is a good way to improve your languge. But there are so many movies that we can choose,we have no idea which one is fit to us. So thanks for the movie Library, this provides us with a convenient. And we should also give thanks to the person who provide the convenient to us, thanks for your efforts, that all we should to say.

  • Joe class 3

Thank you very much for providing us so many worth watching movies. Because there are so many movies and some are not worth watching at all. So, the list above is really of great help, and of course I think I will find some new good movies to add on the list. Meanwhile, I am benifiting a lot by watching these movies with English or no subtitles. Now,I am very happy that I can understand some movies without the subtitless and I believe I can do better in the future by watching more movies.

  • jennifer class2

I always think that the best way to learn English is to watch the movie without Chinese subtitles. However sometimes it is hard to find a movie without Chinese subtitles, I feel so lucky that we have the resources with so many movies especially the movies are all attractive and do not have Chinese subtitles. Thanks a lot.

  • Pearl class9

I love this movie library, thanks for you give us providing so many kinds of interesting or wonderful movies. Some of these movies I have seen before, it make me impressive. The others are waiting for me to find. Also I can choose some movie which I interested to watch. I think learning English through by watching movie is a effective way. So I will stick to watching English-language films.

  • Jimclass13

    EDITOR’S NOTE:
YOU NEED TO BE WEANED OFF SUBTITLES SO THE MOVIES ARE MIXED.
I HAVE NO CONTROL OVER THE SYSU INTRANET.

Thank you for your movies in the English library. There are really a lot of good English movies. But there are still some problems. One is that some movies don’t have subtitles, and my English is not good enough to catch every sentence in the movie if it has no subtitles. Would you put English subtitles into every movie? Another problem is that the internet in SYSU is not stable. If the internet is cut off when I see the movie online, I have to see again from the beginning of the movie. Can you solve the problem?

  • John Class14

Thank you, professor. I tried to search some of my favorite movies on the list just now. Almost all of them could be found on it. Of course, most movies on the list are not very familiar to me. So, thank you for your providing and recommendation. By the way, in my opinion, Goya’s ghosts is a great movie, which is worth to be seen. It is recommended by my existentialism teacher two years ago. I hope it could be added into English Movie Library.

  • john.15

    oh yes! Good!
come on, I can’t wait seeing this library to set up.
I love movie, especially wonderful movie. And after i browse the movie list. I am afraid i have to arise both my hands to set up this library.
By the way, Thanks to Professor, he always has so many surprises to us. If the library set up, i promise you i will try my best to watch all of them.
When we talk about the way to use the library, i think it’s a tough issue to talk about. Anyway, i am looking forward.

  • Linda Class4

Once I heard some excellent students talk about their successful experiences to improve English is to watch the original movies. Some tried to do as this, but they did not find the effect. Now when I watches movies this semester as our professor required us do,I found watching movies may be useful, but we should pay attention to the ways. First we should choose the movies with English subtitles or no subtitles. Then it is better to watch with friends and we can discuss about it, it helps us understand the movie much deeper. And do not always choose the movie just for fun , choose someone that could make you know what happened in the outside world or you never have experiment. This may make you think in mature way, like a graduate student.
Thank you , professor ,you let me know this, and I will share it with my friends. Of course, I will keep it.

  • Mindy class14

The English movie library provides us a variety of movies. These movies concerns different fields of our daily life, some of them are very interesting while others make you ponder. They really broaden our horizon and give us a new look into the world. I really expect that more interesting movies will be added to the English movie library.

  • Aline-class3

Thanks for your English Movie Library. It’s very helpful for me.I gained much from movies in the library.

  • Lyla Class 7

Thank you for your english movie library. That’s truly helpful for us.

  • Vivien Class 4

It is time to end up this semester, but I hope the movie library will exist forever. Except downloading the movies required by the holistic English class, I have downloaded some other movies from the English movie library, such as A Great Wall, Diamonds, etc. They are meaningful, I know much about the world, they also make me think more about our life and our world. Thank you for everything you have done for us, dear Martin.

  • cathy class3

It’s very resourceful! Along with the textbook I can learn more from the movie!Love to “acquire” english this way.

  • Apple13

Thanks for the movie library. I have got many help from it. The download speed is very fast. This gives me a lot of convenience. I hope that we can download the movie also after.

  • Wilson Class14

It’s nearly the end of this semester. Thanks a lot to this English Movie Library and thanks to you professor for introducing some wonderful movie such The Terminal to us. Although the movies are with English subtitle or no subtitle and I have a few difficulties in understanding the movie, I improve my English listening a lot. And I will continue to download movies from the library to study English.

  • Lucy-Class3

Thank you very much for introducing us so many good films.During this semester I have learned a lot,and I think studing English from films is a good way.I believe I can insist to see the good films.

  • Danny-class3

    EDITOR’S NOTE:
THE MOVIE LIBRARY IS ONLY 60% COMPLETED AND THE INDEX IS PURE CHAOS.
IT HAS TAKEN OUR STAFF 7 MONTHS TO GET THIS FAR. AS LONG AS YOU HAVE CAMPUS INTRANET ACCESS YOU CAN ACCESS THE MOVIES.

Thank you for your and your staffs’ great effort!Although this semester is nearly to end,I believe that not only benefit our students this year, but also will benefit more students who take the classes.

  • Jerry Class02

Many thanks for sharing such a lot of interesting movies with us. Some of them really draw me to think deeper, I have learnt a lot from them. You are so nice!

  • Kelley-Class Three

    EDITOR’S NOTE:
THE HOLISTIC ENGLISH MOVIES AND THE FREE CHOICE ENGLISH MOVIE LIBRARY DO NOT CONTAIN ANY TELEVISION SERIES SUCH AS DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, FRIENDS, SEX AND THE CITY, ETC. BECAUSE THEY DO NOT DEPICT TRUE WESTERN CULTURE. THEY ARE MAKE BELIEVE FOR TELEVISION ENTERTAINMENT AND LEAVE CHINSESE STUDENTS WITH A COMPLETELY FALSE UNDERSTANDING OF WESTERN CULTURE. I DEPLORE THE USE OF SUCH tv SERIES FOR USE IN ANY CHINESE ENGLISH CLASS.

I really like these English movies, and after watched some of them I learned many things. I sincerely thanks professor Martin offers these help. Through the study of Oral English this term, I found that I like foreign movies increasingly, especially American films. I have downloaded The Friends, Despair Housewives ,and so on. I will keep watching them, to understand the western culture and improve my English skills. I really think it is a very interesting things, even a kind of enjoyment. I believe that my graduate life is no longer boring, despite the busy biological experiment. Thanks to these English movies ,I really appreciate it!
