Different person has different view. So everyone has his own right to comment on. However as a college student, we should know what is supposed to do, and what is not to. When we talk about something publicly, it doesn’t stand for your own opinions, maybe there are many persons who have an eye on you, in spite of that, it just a glance at you, you must remember that the “butterfly effect”. Tonight I chatted with my friend and talked about the event happened in Duke in May 4th, 2007. It is a shame that all the students cheated were from China. I just wonder that why they didn’t know they were not just supposed to be their own bodies, but for the whole nation. So, being angry is useless, we should think before we do it.

Everybody has his right to say what he wants to say, this is the progress of our society. It is OK for anyone to disagree with others. But you should know this right is based on the respect of each other. I always like to say:”I do not agree with you, but I totally support your right to say what you want to say. But when you want to say anything, you should remember to respect others. So you need to always remember to be polite.”

It’s so important that impacting your emotion when you face to the differnt thinking which come from other person. If you do not understand this rule, you’ll very angery when you want to get some support and comfort from the one you talk with, but she does not follow your wish, even gives some opposite ponit to you.Why donnot change your mind to think that “It’s a noval idea,I’m not agree but I can understand”? Each person has his own point of view. But these ideas need to be civilized, do not attack others. This is the most basic ethical guidelines. We welcome the remarks of civilization, get rid of unethical behavior. Each of us should be a civilized human. Everyone can have a different point of view, but these poit of view should not hurt the others. I think it is the unethical thing to attach the others in order to reach the purposes.

Different person has different way of thinking. It is nothing about right or wrong. Always stick to the issues and do not attack personalities, or you won’t be worth respecting. Some students used crude or vulgar words to express their ideas, I thought, at one side, they were influenced by the various movies, you know, not only in Chinese movies but also in many foreigner movies, there are many crude words. On the other side, they used crude words, maybe they were so angry that they can not find any word to express the strong anger, so they used the crude words.

If you want to beat down the opponent in debate, it is enough to show out your reasons. However, you will be considered as a rough man if you employ personal attacks. We read the article and post our comment about the content. It is existing difference opinion in everything. So for some point, we can learn much from the difference opinions. Also we can express our thinking and think what it should be. Only in this way, we can find the problem existed and then find the right answer to solver it. If we refuse disagree, no dispute no advance. And we can’t attack against someone, so these must based on respect and reasonable.

As a student, and as a man, the first thing we shall do to others is to respect, in other words, be polite. Eveyone of us was born equal and no matter how rich or how poor you are. You have no rights to say or to do something to hurt others’feelings. You may have the rights to state your own thoughts but make sure before you pour it out, it is not harmfull.

    Editor’s Note:
It is never appropriate for a civilized person to be rude, discourteous or vulgar, not even anonymously. That is simply uncivilized.

In the most famous forums or BBS they allow people talk freely to some extent. The phenomenon of rude and insult words is very popular. People can’t learn or know each other in the internet. They can’t behave as a normal citizen. Maybe it is wrong for us as a civilized citizen. This is the difference between internet and real life. If the web site is owned by a private individual especially who is being known each other rather than a public resource. People should respect the owner’s feeling. For example it’s discourteousness for us post insult words in other’s QQ zone. So I think we should be civilized to convey our opinions here.

I totally agree with you. We can discuss things; we can debate on things; we can have different opinions. And we should just focus on these things and agree with others if we found ourselves do not have good reasons. And if we found that we lack propriate reasons, we should not insult others personally instead of agreeing others’ opinion.

I cannot agree with you more. Indeed, as civilized people (we have already accepted 16 years of education), the rude, vulgar, profane and insulting words should be far away from us. No matter how different the opinions are, everyone has the right to show his view out, nobody should insult others. One can gain respect when he respects others. The most important thing for people is communication, we can share our opinions and even argue them peacefully, instead of insulting others with crude words.

“Civilized” may mean that you can disagree with the opinion but you should not attack this view or the speaker. When I read some Chinese history stories, I was shocked for lacking freedom of expression in those ancient times. Lacking freedom also means lacking security of lives and properties which lead to a condition that people are out of control of their own destinies. This condition is horrible. So whether a city and even a country is developed, people’s freedom should be taken into evaluating standards. As high quality students, we should learn to respect others, listen to others’ opinions, especially the opponents’ ones.

In late Qing Dynasty, Chinese governor became aware of the importance to learn English .Nowadays ,from primary school to college, English is emphasized as the most important foreign language. But it is not a Trojan horse in China, instead, it is just a tool to connect and communicate with the international world.

I think most of us mistake the concept of debate. The science get its advancement under strong debate. But the debate is about what the other people advocate, not about the people himself. That means one can argue about the different points but not attack the person who give this point. They are two different concepts. So we should be a civilized student and should not attack other people.

When we have the chance to disobey something, we have no idea how to disagree. So I think it necessary to learn how to disagree as Martin said above.

I think the reason for this is very correct. First, we must respect others, in order to be respected by others. This is a mutual process, just like you use money to buy things you needed. As we all know, everyone has the freedom to comment on, but can not harm the interests of others, this behavior is immoral. As long as each of us had done his own business properly, the whole society will be more harmonious. What’s more important,we must to develop our own moral values. We know that President Franklin Roosevelt often count from one to ten before his want to blow off steam to his subordinates and this way usually make himself more sensible. There is an old saying in China when translated literally is, “You don’t need to be loud to be listened to, only if you are reasonable”. Everybody has the right to express his ideas and you will be agreed on if your opinion is worth. Nowadays, people are getting more and more intolerable to disagreements. I think the only reason is that people are more and more anxious in seeking approval to make sure that he is a valuable human being in the world. As graduate students, we should realize that respect others is much more important, because it is said that: he that respect not is not respect. It’s welcomed to listen to different voices, in this way, we can make the work go more smoothly. The method we choose to deliver our ideas and advice is very important to get the respect and appreciation of the acceptor. Also, that won’t raise the issue of incivility and impoliteness. However, as the old Chinese saying goes,“Nothing can be accomplished without norms or standards.”We couldn’t get absolute liberties without contributing to fulfill our obligations. And all of these urge me pondering. So I’ll keep on commenting and meanwhile getting wiser thoughts from my fellows. Most importantly, I shall obey rules here.

It is our responsibility to be civilized and build our school a “green campus”.Now we are building a harmonious society. So we should to be civilized students. Then how should we do?“Do not use crude or threatening language. Do not use hateful language.Be civilized in everything you write.” This is one thing we must follow it. Besides this,we also need to respect others, protect environment, study hard and so on.I agree with the author.

This announcement deserves our attention. We always say that China is a nation of etiquette. We are proud of that. Unfortunately, nowadays, it is very difficult to find a Chinese BBS without any vulgar, profane and insulting posts. When we have a conversation face to face, we usually talk in good manners. However, when we surf the internet, some think they are invisible, so they behave roughly, even use threatening language. There is no doubt that China used to be a nation of etiquette. Nowadays, is it or not? It is a question for us to ponder over. I do hope we can offer a positive answer to Pro. Wolff. He has great expectations of us; we should not let him down.

Nowadays, the society is a personalized open one which can integrate different opinions and comments. However, “personalized” doesn’t mean that society doesn’t need etiquette at all. It is very important to remember that you are dealing with a “real” human being who has thoughts and feelings just like you. If your comments are attacked by vulgar, profane, insulting and otherwise disgusting words, What will you feel about this style? So, we should use our very best manners all the time – just as we did at home or at school.

We need thing in itself, not personal attacks. We would like to remind ourselves from time to time. However, surf the net and communication in reality is different, men are easy to be relentless emotional and say vicious words on net.
In addition to the warning, I decide to follow these rules:1. be aimed at seeking the truth, not fight. 2. will not do personal attacks. 3. maintain the theme. 4. use evidence during the debate. 5. do not persist in the error. 6. record comments. 7, try to understand other’s thought.

This warning, in my opinion, is the fundamental moral rules of communication, no matter which language you use. Though it is rather simple, it actually reminds us something important we have always neglected—-communicating in a respectful, civilized and unbiased way. I will keep the principles in mind when communicating and discussing with my friends, teachers, parents and etc.

I sincerely wish this website be a good place for us to communicate with each other. Anyone whose words are polite and civilized should be respected and the thoughtful opinions should be complimented. Maybe it’s a good chance for the shy students to change their habits of practicing mute English. And it may also become a condition nice enough for them to bravely share their ideas with others.

Just now I read the e-mail about one student being EXPpelled. Why the requirement of comment on some policy issues will evoke such intense reaction? I am wondering.
During my growth, I have almost never encouraged a single teacher asking students to comment on some sensitive hotpots of China publicly. It seems to be not safe enough for teachers or students to announce their personal political viewpoints, especially about some taboo. If one criticizes some action of the government publicly, or evokes people around against the main stream, he/she may be asked to “drink tea” by “relevant department” one day.
I am not here to say that the professor is “retroactive”, drawing us students into “danger”. When the first time I saw the topic, such as “Taiwan”, “Dali Lama”, I felt shock for the writer’s courage. At the same time I felt lack of security that whether it was proper to discuss such topics on the website. Obviously, as the professor said himself, the website would be seen around the world. After I read over the whole article, I felt much better and shamed. The opinions in the articles are objective and thoughtful. Although I am a Chinese, and even a post-graduate student, I don’t master much historic or political analyzing performance to my own country’s situation. I could not make a pertinent comment on the issues. Such a way of improving English expression capability is fresh and meaningful for me. It forces me to learn more phrases and words in order to express some complex meaning.
I have talked about myself too much and almost forgotten the reason of writing this passage. Once an English teacher told me that, every new semester, they would receive plenty of complaints on the foreign teacher. As far as I am concerned, there may be two reasons. First, the lack of security to make comments on sensitive issues stops students talking frankly and informally. Making comments becomes an obligatory task. So when the homework becomes more and more, complaints will become more and more. Second, the threads are written by a foreigner, an American professor that is strict and even harsh. His identity is a sensitive origin. Usually, foreign teachers don’t talk about the Chinese political issues or cultural comparisons. But this time the professor not only does talk, but also shows a serious attitude towards the comments from students. That leads to two consequences. On one hand, the comment assignments can’t be treated “so-so” as well as others. On the other hand, someone may feel uncomfortable or even angry for the comments or criticism from a foreigner. The latter could be the reason of the compelled student. Unfortunately he/she chose a wrong way to let off his/her emotion.
In my opinion, if you find the homework too much to afford, you can have a choice. Find a suitable position for yourself in the English study. You can require yourself to be excellent, or just be so-so. Although the professor is strict, no one can force you to study except yourself. In addition, I know it is hard to meet a serious teacher nowadays. No matter how you dislike the teacher and his/her teaching style, you could hardly change the circumstance. It is better to adjust your own attitude and accept the teacher’s style than to complaint. What is more, focus on the thread itself. If you treat the foreign teacher just as a teacher, or even a person, then you can read the article calmly.

After reading the article, I absolutely agree with the views mentioned in it. Yes, everybody has the right of expressing his or her opinions on certain issues, however, his or her words should not be the weapon which attacks other people. We have to admit this: to some extent, it is these various views and horizons that make this world colorful and diversified. From another perspective, diversity makes creativity! And creativity is the origins or even engine of the world’s advance. America sets us a good example. As we all know, America is famous for its democracy and free speech. Thus, Americans can express his or her opinion whenever and under any circumstances. Consequently, Americans are regarded as the most creative people in this world and its economy rank the first class. I think that is the point we Chinese people should learn from USA.

EDITOR’S NOTE: NOT JUST ONE STUDENT. THAT MAKES THREE THIS SEMESTER. UNBELIEVABLE!

Being sorry, worried, lucky, or nervous, such complex feelings come to me with such a WARNING. I am sorry to hear that one of we graduate students in Sun Yat-Sen University had behaved in so unbelievable a way that making threats of physical violence to a professor. As everyone knows, our college is one of the top ten universities in China. And then, how can others respect this honor when there is a student who made threats to his teacher?
I am worried that it is not easy to make a proper comment to the threads with those sensitive topics in China. It needs a worldwide horizon and basic knowledge of history, politics, society, and so on. It also needs an impersonal attitude which is harder for Chinese students who are in youth with an exaggerated national emotion. The world is objective while subjective emotion of everyone’s exits objectively. But it is always not a good excuse for someone to give loose to his emotion which based on hurting others’. It is not easy to transcend the control of emotion but not impossible.
It is lucky that I have seen the WARNING. I am still having chances to learn how to express myself without being disagreeable in a better way. It is an art. Talking freely while being civilized is a way to the art of life, especially for we graduate students who have accepted education for years.

Yeah, I agree. We should not attack personalities even with different opinions. It’s a principal problem. It seems that we are not accustomed to contrary views by others. For instance, though we have many universities but the diversity between individuals is not significant. The study and job pressure promote us to be the same person as the teachers and employers want. This thought sometimes becomes an obstacle for our development.

Politeness is the traditional virtue of Chinese people. It will be never out of date. There are many personal attacks on the Internet. Whenever I see those offensive words, I feel confused. If the speaker is the victim, will he feel hurt? Before speaking something, we should think about the feelings of the person we talk about. Empathy is so important in our communication. If you cannot pocket an insult, how can you force the others to do that? Shall we be more friendly to others? Maybe there will be more happiness for them and you both.

This thread saddens me very deeply. Why is it even necessary?

Acting civilized should be automatic without being told to do so.

I have taught in China for 8 years and only in Shanghai and Guangzhou, at famous universities, do I find such arrogant, crude and unvivilized students.

The west perceives Chinese people as backwards, barbarians, crude and uncivilized. This web site is my small attempt to change that erroneous perception. Then a student at a top university makes a backwards, barberic, crude and uncivilized post. UNBELIEVABLE!

Do not thank me for this thread. You should have these things in your head and heart already. It is to your shame that this thread was required in the first place.

It’s very important to be civilized on the network. In modern days, with the development of internet, people are at more liberty to show their opinion. On the other hand, many people have never learned how to make a remark rationally. What’s more, a section of people throw dirt at others over the internet. Maybe it’s the phenomenon of the Social Reshaping Period, but it’s not a good thing. As a postgraduate, we should try our best to communicate on the network rationally, because we are the man with higher education.

It is easy for people to relate one’s opinion to his/her personality in China, which, in fact, is not that a proper way for a debate because though the two parties have different opinions in a debate, they are still friends in private. Adding comments or holding debates may be a good method to promote the communication both home and abroad. Especially in democratic countries, everyone has his right to tell out his own opinion. In some cases as we know, the government may hold a public hearing for a certain purpose specially, such as to pass a law. However, that doesn’t mean we can do whatever we want and obeying some rules seems quite necessary in order to make a harmonious atmosphere. For example, don’t make filthy words or disgusting behavior and respect others. For different background, it is usual that we may have different opinion on one thing. In our daily live, we also sometimes argue with other people for they do not agree with us. For example, when someone says that he prefers Hanhan to Guojingming who both are popular novelists in China, you may disagree with him, you may like the latter better; you think the former is more extreme, you still haven’t the reasons to attack others.
Not everyone we met shares our views, opinions, and ideas. But it doesn’t have to be the reason for us to stop cultivating ourselves and reaching out to others. We all get complacent sometimes. We have comfort zones. We do the things we enjoy, that feel good, that come easily. That’s why many people surround themselves with people who agree with them, think like them, and support them.
We think our position is right. We want things done in the way that works best for our people. So we argue our points strongly. That’s good, but don’t overdo it. We won’t win every battle. So it’s important that we should “disagree without being disagreeable”.

Netiquette is a set of social conventions that facilitate interaction over networks, ranging from Usenet and mailing lists to blogs and forums. After reading this warning, I was reminded that we have to comply with rules of netiquette. It is necessary to write down one’s opinion in a polite way, just as to talk to somebody face-to-face. One of the TEN RULES of netiquette is “Help keep flame wars under control”, which says that, even if there are contrary views between different persons, they’d better try to convince each other by a polite way, instead of attacking personalities.

As a professor in Lingnan College says, there are three neccessary steps for an academic topic to progress. Firstly, at least two different point view; Secondly, both views are supported by a group of people; Thirdly, intense debate on these views, but not on these people.

If you politely talking with other people and show respects to them, people also will respect to you in turn, then you will more easily to get counterpart’s supports. One uses crude or threatening language that probably causes trouble or other’s aversions, at the end he (she) may be stranded by himself (herself). So I think being civilized is very important in our life.

No matter what we do and what to say, it’s always to be polite for everyone. Everybody has the right to be respectable. Although we have the freedom to express our opinion about somebody or something, but a basic principal to be remembered is that being civilized in everything.
If we express vulgar, profane, insulting and otherwise disgusting posts when we make comments on some news or article, we may obey the law and we may be brought into an accusation. We are person who are educated in university, those impolite behaviors are not belonged to us.

Making comments means writing down our own opinion about the issues and the attitude of the author. We talk about the issues by setting forth facts and reasoning the things out.Furthermore what we should do is communicating our thought with the person we don’t agree with generous attitude, proper expression and rational explanation.Seeking common ground while reserving differences are great rules for making comments and communication.
Obviously according to the different angles to think about things I dissent from much of Professor’s opinion.I can say my thought free by making comments about his article. At the same time I appreciate that he offers me a room and an angle to contrast and reflect our own culture.

Some people here in China like making Vulgar and insulting comments on the Internet. They do these mainly because they cannot disagree with their boss or people around in real life. It is safe to express their true feeling or exaggerated outrage behind the monitor. There is an old saying in China “It is of great virtue to be scrupulously honest even when there is no one around”. From my point of view, leaving comments on the Internet is as the same as making a short speech in public. So it goes without saying that we need to remind ourselves of being civilized here.

I agree with prof.Martin absolutely. As far as I am concerned, it is very common that everyone sees the things from different perspective so that we should respect others` rights to speak without attacking personalities. Because we have been adults already, guided by reason rather than emotions no matter what we do. Deliberate consideration should be taken before action. If we can`t clam down to solve the problems, it always leads to misery or bloodshed such as the case of crime. Most criminal reflecting on themselves point out emotion and impulse destroy their lives actually. So, looking before you leap is the best way to deal with dispute. Furthermore, as the proverb says, two heads are better than one. Listening carefully may help us know more about the world and broaden our horizon. Usually, some fresh ideas rush into your mind when listening to anybody else. Most of the time, we can perfect point of view between listening and debating.

I can’t agree more! Some people’s behavior is unacceptable. It is true that we may bring our emotion into discussion or expression. But some people even forget basic etiquette. When expressing different opinion, we have to focus on the matter itself rather than the person. Only in this way, we can discuss problems rationally and try to find a way to solve them. So far as we are all adults, why not think and behave maturely? If you want to solve something or want to change others’ attitude, you should start from others’ standpoint and try to make an agreement. Rejection or offense sometimes may worsen the situation.

The free communication of ideas and opinions is one of the most precious of the rights of man. Today freedom of speech, or the freedom of expression, is recognized in international and regional human rights law. However, when we enjoy the freedom we have to keep in mind that we must respect the right to privacy, as well as the honor and reputation of others. That is the bottom line we will never cross.
The Internet is a common area, a public space like any village square, except that it is the largest common area that has ever existed. Anything that anybody wishes to say can be heard by anyone else with access to the Internet, and this world-wide community is as large and diverse as humanity itself. Accordingly it’s most necessary for all of us to make sure our comments and criticizm are reasonable, and try to respect others.

I do admire Wen Jiabao, our Premier, who can always powerfully strike back the provocation from the foreign journalist in a good manner. Secondly, tolerance is the best treasure we should cherish since the rationality is cultivated into human mind, therefore, allow no chance of offensive even in the case you are strongly disagreed. Thanks to this website, it not only helps me practice more English , but also let me know more other classmates’ idea. I have never find that I am so eager to learn English. As long as it can help me do some progress, I will hurry to have a try. Just practice more.
Professor had told me that “I have to protest my website, I protest my website by protest you”. Yes, being a postgraduate student, we have too much idea to express. However, there are a few students do not pay attention to what they said. In my opinion, one’s word shows his moral cultivation. Dirty and insulting words should not appear on this website.
Give what you want to receive. Let us keep in mind that we should respect others while we are expressing our mind.

In this civilized society, we have the right to express our opinions freely. While, at the same time, we also need to obey some rules, such as no personal attacks, no disgusting words. Just as we need laws to regulate our behaviors, those rules are necessary.

Firstly I don’t think we have the right to attack others with crude words. But in my opinion, we have the rights to talk with each others freely.
Secondly we have studied for twenty years, we should know how to express our emotions in right ways. We can’t attack others for we are unhappy.
Thirdly we should respect everyone in the world although we may disagree with him/her.

Firstly, we have our rights to express our own opinions freely. Secondly, Other people have the rights to express themselves as well. If we asked people to respect our speaking rights ,we should respect their rights first. Thirdly, Keeping your own opinion is allowed and necessary, but do remember to control your emotion and show your friendliness to others when they have different opinions with you .

I totally agree with what the professor said in the above passage. Our world needs various people and a multitude of ideas. At present, we need to express freely our points related to the current affairs and news. Then we can find more solutions and provide more policies for our development and progress.
But, we also can not ignore the fact our expression should become more objective and rational. We should pay more attention to the real world and backgrounds of events. Because we can not waste time showing the useless words any more.

  • I don’t want to say anything more but I will keep what is presented above in mind and be a civilized person.

In my opinion,if we want to earn the respect of others,we must show respect for other people. In order to show respect for others, the first thing we should do is to use decent language, not to use words to slander people.I believe, physical wounds can heal quickly, but the wound of the mind is hard to heal.Perhaps people will never forget the words that hurt their feeling. So to be a civilized person,we need to maintain reasonable, and do not have a loose tongue to hurt others.

I can’t agree more. We’re not for arguing but debating, which finally improve understanding of the topics we concerned. I don’t like people yelling just because they can’t agree with each other. After of all, to be polite!
