ABACUS 7/2010
Chinese banks operate much differently than western banks, but that is another subject all together.
During travels throughout China it is not unusual to see shop keepers in rural (countryside) areas using an abacus to tally a customer’s purchases. Usually they have a modern cash register and/or a calculator but they still prefer to use an abacus. The first experience might seem strange but it is so prevalent that the culture shock quickly wears off.
However, nothing is preparatory to the observation of bank tellers in China’s ICBC, in a rich eastern coastal city, using an abacus. This was so shocking it demanded a picture for proof.
And it was not just one teller; it was every teller and every window.
This is one of China’s major banks.
UNBELIEVABLE!
I am convinced there is a reasonable explanation, there always is.
