Why Teachers Take Advantage of Their Students
It seems there is an epidemic of teachers having sex with their students. Every time you turn on the television or open a newspaper there are more sick stories of this occurring. Some teenagers think that this is probably awesome if they happen to have an attractive teacher, but most of the stories we read involve gross, older teachers taking advantage of needy children. Unfortunately, we only hear these stories when one of these people actually gets caught. There are many reasons why these disgusting acts are committed and we’re afraid to say they’ll probably never stop regardless of the media attention these stories generate. Let’s take a look at how this phenomenon perpetuates itself in our nation’s schools:
Teachers are already in control. Teachers are in a position where students are supposed to listen to them. The majority of students, whether they care to do well in school or not, recognize the control a teacher has over a class. This places the teacher in a far different position than high school students’ other love interests: each other. Teachers are not peers of the students which makes this a dangerous two-way street. While students are typically too young (under 18) to be making a legal decision they are drawn to having a sexual relationship with a teacher or someone older. Teachers that are driven to have sex with their students are people that have trouble dealing with their control and something clicks in their heads that it is okay to do whatever they want with their students.
They prey on the vulnerable student. Teachers are in a position on a daily basis to see their students and how they interact with other students. When a preying teacher notices a student with poor self-esteem this student moves to the top of the list. The vulnerable student feels compelled to please the teacher and often won’t admit to what happened out of fear of continued embarrassment.
They’re attracted to them. Some of these stories are just as simple as one person being attracted to another and they don’t fear the consequences because their attraction is too strong. Ridiculous? Of course it is but these people have problems to begin with and if they meet someone they are into then they’re going to act on their impulses. They view these relationships like any others they’ve had in life and refuse to see the harm they’ve done to the student and their families.

Teacher-Student Sex Said to Be Not Unusual

The girl liked her teacher from the moment she stepped into his remedial class. When he treated all his students to chocolate bars one day, her affection for him, for his genial ways and hard muscles, flared into desire. When he offered extra credit to anyone who helped him mark papers, she jumped at the chance. She flirted and flirted. Then one day he made a move.
“We were looking at each other in the elevator from the basement to the third floor, and it goes really slow,” she said. “And we just kissed right there. When you’re a sophomore and you’re with a teacher, your head goes crazy. I was in ecstasy.”
The girl, a Richmond Hill High School student, is almost a year older now, and perhaps wiser than she should have to be. After an entire school year of secret romance, “I got my heart broken,” she said. “He only wanted to have a good time, and after that it’s bye-bye.”
If she has any consolation, it is that she is far from alone. She has company in thousands of other girls and boys across the country who have been sexually involved with teachers.
The most notorious recent example is Christina, the 15-year-old East Harlem girl who crossed the country with her former gym teacher. He has since been charged with kidnapping her. Prosecutors have considered charging Mr. Harris with statutory rape, but that charge may never emerge if prosecutors cannot prove that the couple had sex in New York. The teen-ager has said their relationship became intimate only after the two began their odyssey across the country.
“Sex between teachers and students is much more common than people are willing to acknowledge,” said Charol Shakeshaft, a Hofstra University professor and co-author of a four-year study on school sexual abuse that appeared this March in Phi Delta Kappan, an education journal.
Despite its frequency, teacher-student sex is always wrong, educators said, a betrayal of trust that is harmful to the student and indicative of an emotional defect in the teacher.
A vast majority of teachers never molest their students and would never take advantage of a child’s crush, researchers and school officials said. But Ms. Shakeshaft’s study quoted findings that up to 5 percent of teachers engage in some form of sexual abuse of students, from inappropriate verbal flirtation to intercourse. A nationwide survey in 1993 by the American Association of University Women found that nearly 15 percent of 8th to 11th graders, 25 percent of girls and 10 percent of boys, had been sexually harassed by a staff member.
The most striking statistics come from a 1991 survey of students at a North Carolina high school, published in The Journal of Education Research, in which 13 percent of graduates said they had had sex with a teacher.
That 13 percent may be exaggerated, Ms. Shakeshaft said, but she said that students tended to be more accurate reporters of sexual contact than are teachers or principals, who often try to cover up the incidents.
In New York City, 110 cases of school sexual abuse have been reported since 1991, most of them concerning some kind of willing involvement by a smitten student.
Cases like Christina’s and the Richmond Hill student’s fall into the category of what Ms. Shakeshaft’s study called “bad judgment romance,” in which young male teachers become intimate with attractive older female students. Cases involving female teachers and male students, and homosexual liaisons, are much rarer.
“These abusers saw their actions as either harmless or romantic,” the report said. Ms. Shakeshaft estimated that “bad judgment” abusers outnumbered pedophiles — who seek work in schools to molest children — 2 to 1. She found that female victims in high schools most often looked mature for their age and had “bad girl” reputations.
As for the teachers, their inability to resist the temptations of young students indicates something deeply wrong emotionally, psychologists said.
Normally, said Bonnie Jacobson, a clinical psychologist and author of books on relationships, young children have a sense of being perfect and all powerful, but grow out of it at age 4. But teachers, therapists and others in a position of power who have never resolved that phase can start taking to heart the admiration they get from students and subordinates, and abuse it.
“They really use the person who’s giving that level of adoration,” she said. “It’s not always conscious, but it’s very destructive, very destructive.”
After Ms. Shakeshaft’s study came out, more than a dozen women wrote her to describe the pain they still felt over affairs, some of them years old.
“The pain is lifelong,” she said. “They never are able to overcome the sense of betrayal over what happened. And they wrote us about how they had trouble trusting, trouble believing, and trouble carrying on intimate relations as adults.”
In recent years, public discussion of sexual harassment in schools and universities has made teachers more aware than ever that they should not take advantage of students.
But at the same time, said Alvin Cooper, clinical director of the San Jose Marital and Sexuality Center, “The older man falls victim to Calvin Klein commercials with 14- or 15-year-old girls. The media make for a lot of sexual acting out in our society.”
The policy in the New York City schools is quite clear on the penalty for employees who sexually abuse students, regardless of age.
“There’s an absolute line,” said John Ferrandino, superintendent of New York’s high schools. “Any kind of dating and sexual relations is a violation. We bring you up on charges, we throw you out, we get you arrested if we can.”
School employees are required to report all suspected abuse cases immediately to investigators. Yet the affairs continue to occur at a steady rate, school officials said.
“There are very many relationship cases we never hear about,” said Regina Loughran, the special counsel handling Christina’s case for the Special Investigator’s office of the Board of Education. “Very often, you hear about it only if the relationship goes bad.”
Ms. Shakeshaft’s study found that the teachers most likely to fall into sexual relationships with their students were those who spent time with them individually or after school: coaches, counselors and teachers of drama, art, music and gym.
A sampling of recent relationship cases handled by Ms. Loughran’s office demonstrated that. A track coach, David Drummond, at Automotive High School in Brooklyn pleaded guilty to third-degree rape after having sex with a 15-year-old female student. Others accused of abuse were a gym teacher, Andre Cadet, at Julia Richman High School in Manhattan; several young school safety officers, and a couple of guidance counselors. One counselor, Roger Krubiner of Park West High School, was accused of persuading a girl to have sex with him and pose for nude pictures.
In Christina’s case, at least, her teacher, Glenn Harris, was apparently not playing with her. He ruined his career, spent all his money and tried to marry her.
Not all stories of teacher-student romance end as badly as hers, with the teacher facing criminal charges, but to educators, what Mr. Harris did was undeniably wrong.
“It might be a cute love story,” Mr. Ferrandino said, “But, it’s corny, but being a teacher is a sacred trust, and you have to handle it like that.”

Affair with Chinese Student Leaves American Behind Bars

The young American English instructor at a certain English training college in Zhuhai, China’s southern Guangdong province got himself involved in a love affair with one of his students that all went horribly wrong the second he found himself dumped.
On hearing the news of the end of the relationship, John (not his real name) threaten the girl with publishing naked pictures he had taken on his phone, on the internet. He demanded RMB 100 thousand to destroy the naked pictures. Last week the Mid-level People’s Court of Zhuhai sentenced the American to 3 year’s imprisonment for blackmail. On completion of the sentence he will be removed from the country.
Upon having the sentence translated to him, the defendant broke down in his chair sobbing and begged the judge for the right to appeal for a lighter sentence. John even pleaded with the judge for a community service sentence, anything to avoid a Chinese jail. John is due for an appeal soon.
John, aged 22 moved to Zhuhai to work as an Oral English Instructor in 2008. It was there that he met Miss Luo and they struck it off straight away. On the evening of the 25th October John invited Luo to his apartment for a meal. According to the American’s testimony in court: “We had fun that evening and got on really well.” It was then that the couple made love. It was that night that while Luo was in the shower, John took photos of her on his mobile phone camera. One of the three photos he took showed her naked above the waist.

John explained that when he took the pictures she knew all about them and didn’t refuse or mind them being taken. The next day Miss Luo left for Hangzhou, Zhejiang province on the other side of the country. The two of them remained in touch but after a short while Luo told John that she had a boyfriend in Hangzhou and that she wanted to break up. John felt that he had been cheated and swore to take his revenge on her.
On 30th November 2008 John contacted Luo via QQ and sent her one of the naked photos, tricking her by saying he had lots more naked pictures that she didn’t know about, as well video footage. John demanded Luo back or he would send the snaps and videos to others. But after some more discussions he agreed to accept RMB 100 thousand in exchange for the illicit material.
Moments later Luo called Zhuhai police and upon arriving at John’s apartment they made their arrest.

• When I saw the news, it makes me so sick and shocked. Teachers abuse of their position of power over their students especially over those vulnerable younger students. As we know, teacher is a model of virtue for others; no doubt they should set up a good image to their students. Teachers did sex crime often won’t admit to what happened out of fear of continued embarrassment. So why they don’t think about the consequences before they prey on those poor students? Students under 18 are too young to protect themselves and so too weak to appeal in legal measure. Especially when they don’t want the others to know about this, how can they find a good solution to the problem? The sort of sex crime undoubtedly makes the students suffer from the pain of body and mind and affects their quality of life and work. Concerning the criminal, a law is urgently enacted, and in the absence of a law, a school board should set a policy banning sexual relationships between student and teacher. I think our campus needs a better and peaceful environment.

Actually my best friend in college met the thing, and finally she refused the unreasonable demands. And from then on when we saw teachers, we couldn’t trust the group. As a teacher, if you lost basic moral demands for yourselves, you are crime.
I never heard about it before. I think it’s horrible because that teachers are viewed respectably very much in China. They are called “engineers of human soul ”.
The parents will feel disgusting to hear of these stories. A teacher should follow professional morality and control his sexual lust for students. It is no wrong for true love. If the teacher and the student fall in love with each other and the student has reached the age of 18, it is no wrong for their love. However, if the situation is older teachers taking advantage of needy children or vulnerable student compelled to please the teacher because fear of continued embarrassment, the teacher is unforgivable.
The mission of teachers is sacred and great. They should obey the ethics of teaching profession. How can they use their position of power to sexually harass to their students? It is should be criticized.
After reading, besides sad and indignant, I feel nothing. Why they can commit that as a human being with humanity? Maybe they had lost their own so called humanity. When they commit the illegal act, did they think about the feeling of the teens and their parents? Merely most of criminals were unmarried? Where is the nature of human? Perhaps, to some extent, they had being sinking in the temper joy and impulse and gone to the reverse side against the humanity. These crimes remind people of much action that should be taken to enhance the protection for the vulnerable group–children and teenagers.
I am totally shocked by the fact that teachers have sex with their students, and it’s so disgusting. I didn’t know such conducts were so popular either in China or the west. And the most surprising thing for me is that most of the guilty teacher female, from 19-year-old substitute teacher to 60-year-old old woman according to the report. Such an ashamed thing! I just can’t imagine how such a noble career breeds such guilty and sickened behavior. I am total against it and I would also not allow such things to happen to me or my children in the future. In my opinion, teachers are one of the most respected careers in the world; they should educate the students and guide them towards success and achievement. The police and the government should pay more attentions to such disgusting conducts and punish such guilty teachers, I hope.
With the reform and opening up deepening ,with the market economy sustained development, pluralistic cultural strong shocks people’s thinking . Treatment of sex between teachers and students needs to explore the situation, in my opion,we should look at the case: First, some teachers and students has not too much difference in age, may become a happy couple. Second, some teachers of primary school do sexual harassment to the students, which is contrary to the moral and legal, should be condemned and punished.
It will really be a sad phenomenon if we consider the student/teacher sex is not unusual. At least, it will be viewed unusual if it happened in China, because of the Chinese traditionalism. It is unwise to sentence all students/teachers sex into death. It depends. If the very student and the very teacher are really in love with each other, such conduction is not to blamed, it should be encouraged instead. Of course, they should be over 18. I felt very sad and astonished after reading this article. Why are there so many phenomenons about teachers abuse their students? I think that there are two causes. Firstly, about teachers, traditional teaching mode makes teacher as the center of teaching and teachers are used to control students. This is an important factor. Secondly, about students, students lost the initiative in teaching and learning ,and students are lack of self-awareness and ability to protect themselves. In China, there are many such report. The presenter said, it is stupid to fall in love with your teacher, because he always presents in your face with prepared. I think what the presenter said is very inspiring. The teacher should not take advantage of the career to have relationship with the student. I’ve heard a lot about that and luckily I didn’t come across with any of these teachers. But why are most of the guilty teachers female? I never thought of that. Instead I always believe that most of the guilty teachers are male because almost all the cases I heard are about male teachers and the young, beautiful girl students. Maybe that’s the difference between different countries. Recently a male teacher was fired by the senior school he worked in, for asking his student for sex. The girl is so smart that she recorded the teacher’s words and accused him of sexual harassment. That may be a good example of self-protection.
The affairs between teacher and student, is absolutely disgusting and will destroy the whole life of a teenager. It’s not necessary to argue in this question on good or evil.
But the affection of a teenager to the teacher, if properly handle, is unnecessarily develop into a tragic ending, it call for more work to do by the teachers.
Every time I heard the news about a teacher having sex with their student(s) by taking advantage of his/her students, I felt angry and terrible. It is normal for a student to admire his/her teacher due to the teacher’s charming appearance or achievement on academic and may show his/her interest initiatively. However, if the teacher takes advantage of this and makes some unmoral actions, it will turn out to be disgusting and intolerable, let alone some teachers compel the students because they can decide whether the student can get the diploma or not.

I don’t fight against the love between student and teacher only if the love is on their owe will. And if they love each other, sex is OK. But I really fight against the sex between student and teacher if it is only a transaction. No matter it is the teacher’s mandate or the student’s allure. As being a teacher, he or she must realize that it is crime doing sex transaction with student.
I am so shocked after reading this text and recall a real story happened in a middle school of Shanwei city. Several days ago, a junior middle school girl sat with a teacher in the office, chatting from time to time .After half of an hour, they began to hug and kiss each other for a long time. Another student captured this video which soon after circulated on the Internet. That teacher was proved exactly as the girl’s math teacher.
The teacher was acted a parent for students, let’s image, how terrible if a parent do deeply hurt to his children. If the teacher really has sex with his student, I don’t know what to say, only feel inconceivable and condemn that so-called teacher. Everyone should have he basic professional ethics, to the teachers, “CULTIVATION” is their responsibility.
In China, to have sex wantonly is considered to be demoralization, let alone teacher-student sex. Once this thing happens, it is mainly the teacher’s fault. They take the great responsibility for nation’s prosperity and civilization in the next generation. All in all, it is truth that the teacher mainly related to the women wants to have sex with her own students. That is so disgusting ridiculous. So we must take some measures and pay more attention to such urgent things.
There is one point that must be clear that true love should not be blamed. But if both regard this as a fair transaction, there is no need to criticize on it. But when one part is obviously a victim, some measure should be taken to prevent the horrible and disgusting thing from happening again. For example, don’t go alone if you have to go and be clear not to drink or eat something he or she gives to you. When the offensive action is about to happen, you should warn him of the serious consequences and tell him your police daddy is waiting outside. All in all, learn to protect yourself and your friend.
At first, these affairs between teachers and students are not accepted by Chinese traditional thought. In China, “teacher” is a sacred occupation which the teachers are always respected by everybody in society. We can image, how astonished the person will be after listening the sex between teacher and student. For some young students, one person is away from home for study without any accompanied. They more likely want to have people care about them, so when the teacher looks after them with dirty thoughts, they easily fall into the trap because their emotional maturity are not enough. The so-called teachers often use this point as a means to achieve the purpose. So, to avoid this situation happened again, we must improve the basic professional ethics of teachers.
I think teacher-student sex is disgraceful. It is horrible for teachers to do such a kind of things. But this phenomenon really exists. The teachers do not have enough responsibility for the students they teach. Perhaps they all know it is against law, but sometimes they can not control themselves when they make choices. It may arise because of the human nature. However, students should learn to protect themselves consciously. Otherwise, it will give them the life long hurt. In a word, this phenomenon is immoral and illegal.

I think the female students can be taken advantage of by the male teacher for two reasons. First, some young female students are too naive; they simply think little about future. Second, the male teachers can take advantage of the female students’ naive. They are teachers, so they have more chances to contract with female students. Actually, the teacher-student sex relationship is rare in my surrounding. I think we should not deny that there may be true love between teacher and students. I have heard some news about teacher–student sex. Yesterday I saw some pictures on the internet about a middle school student kissing his mathematics teacher in the office. People have different opinions about this. Some thought it is normal, but others were very angry about this situation. When I read this article, my first response is that it is unmoral that teachers take advantage of his students. In our daily life, we give respect to the teacher`s role. We always use all kinds of words to describe teachers. For example, we like to compare teacher to the candles. It is disappointed that there are many sex scandals about teachers and students in recent years. It has bad influence to our society. I hope our teachers can improve their diathesis and stick up for their image.
In my opinion, we should see this phenomenon objective. Sex between a male and a female is a common thing. And if the teacher and the student are all mature, we should not say anything about their action. What they do is just a common thing. We don’t have the right to interfere them. While there are surely many sexual actions between teacher and student with the student is a minor. If a teacher have sex with his/her minor student and we should see is as a crime. The teacher should shoulder his own action. In a word, when we meet a sex between a teacher and a student, we should see whether they are voluntary. And if they are voluntary and they are all matures, what they have done have nothing to do with us. If not, it is a crime and they should be published by law.
Sexual harassment is a universal problem in most countries, maybe with different national characteristics. The victims in China are usually girls, offended by male teachers. And most of them chose not to tell incident their parents, officers of schools or policemen until the situation went really severe. The main reason for it is that children in China were taught to follow their teachers whatever they tell you to do, that they were seldom educated about the knowledge of sex since Chinese people are too shy to talk about such topic and that the youngsters are afraid of being revenged. The teacher-student sex in US may be quite different. Some of the teachers involving in such affairs are female, which is hardly seen in China. Some students in America really want to have sex with his/her teachers, and they chose to do it, which is also not common in China.
No matter what the differences are, sexual harassment is sexual harassment, and nothing can justify such actions by teachers. In my opinion, teachers should never have sexual or romantic relationship with students. People may argue that is it extreme difficult for human being to fight against their natures. If the two really love each other, is that so difficult to wait until they are not in a teacher-student relationship anymore?
I think this problem can be classified the crime to minor and we all know minor is not completely responsible for their behavior. The criminals take advantage of these and obviously teachers have the most chances to encroach on minors. In my opinion, no good way can stop the occurrence of this crime. What we can do is increase the cost to perpetrate a crime and vigilance of students.
Recently,sexual relations between teachers and students caused hot discussion between the pubic.Many people think that this action violate the ethical guidelines,which should be condemned.But some people hold the oppsite view that this is true love,we can not willfully stop it.

As a younger student before, I totally can’t receive the sex relationship between teachers and students. The reason is obvious that the students are too immature. When I was yang, I didn’t what love it is, and the teacher-student love was horrible. Because I didn’t know what the real love is. while, as an adult now, I don’t think the teacher-student love is impossible again. Because love has no boundares, no countries, no identities. everyone has the equal right to love someone else.

I have not heared any real situations like this happening around my living environment.I am noy sure whether it really exists.But if there really exists this kind of immoral behavior,it should be condemned strongly.Teachers should be an example of moral behaviors but not take advantage of the opportunities provided by their jobs to destroy their students’ futures.Even though sometimes it is the students that take the initiative,teachers should stop him or her.Or they are not worthy of the name–teacher.
Long long ago, I’ve heard rumors of that kind before, yet I rarely believe it. Because in my mind, teacher is a kind of noble work, they do all they can to teach us, teach us all that they know, and set good examples which impressed us most of the time. I’ve been in school for almost 15 years. Campus is a holy land in my heart, it is in campus that you learned knowledge, and in campus that you made friends, and what’s more, it is in campus that you are educated! In fact, after reading the article and learning about the cases cited, I was really shocked. Teachers who take advantage of their students for sexual intention really violate work ethic, and are contemptible. Also I’ve heard before that students got married with their teachers in universities, what I want to express is that if both the teacher and the student love each other and get married after thinking twice but not by impulse, then I can accept it and admire their love, after all, in China this case is acceptable! Bu if not, I contemplate the teacher who seduce his or her students. Fortunately, similar case has never occurred around, I should appreciate it!
Terrible, I think. I think maybe the older teacher to young students is charming maturity. Young students can’t tell who is kind and who is wicked. They just think “oh, the man/woman on the blackboard is handsome/beautiful” “what if he/she can be my dad/mum” “oh, he looked me with a smile” And if teacher uses the kid’s feeling and do something bad, it’s unforgivable. What will happen when the kid grows up? It will make scar in their heart and never be cured.
So I think our law must forbid this happening in a strict way like death or a long sentance. If meatures be taken, the potential criminal will think twice before doing it. So the crime will reduce and finally be eliminated, I really hope.
This is an old continuous story around the world .at the first place we should understand that teachers and student are human. they have feeling so they could fall in love ,and also they could fall in mistakes . the only thing can make it control is our moral and may be our laws ,if we get the right moral we will get the right behaviour . most of us make these mistake when he just follow his own wishes without any attention to others rights . so if we can be normal honest people our and other life will be good whatever we were student or teachers or anything else.
On the one hand, I feel terribly angry at teachers who have sex with their students, especially when the students are very young. This kind of teachers are not only shameful but also committing a serious crime, and I think they deserve a really severe punishment. Months ago, there were news about some little children being raped by their male kindergarten teachers and the teachers were sentenced to a few years in prison. In my view, the punishment is much too light and the laws in China should be perfected further.
On the other hand, I think the students who are willing to have sex with their teachers should also be criticized. These students are not aware of self-esteem and they don’t cherish themselves. I feel sorry for their foolish behavior and apparently they need education.
We are only people and if love happens between a student and a teacher and if the student is old enough then its just a matter of time when those two people will be together. In my opinion, people like that should wait until their educational relation is over so there is not ethical problem.
