Why Teachers Take Advantage of Their Students
It seems there is an epidemic of teachers having sex with their students. Every time you turn on the television or open a newspaper there are more sick stories of this occurring. Some teenagers think that this is probably awesome if they happen to have an attractive teacher, but most of the stories we read involve gross, older teachers taking advantage of needy children. Unfortunately, we only hear these stories when one of these people actually gets caught. There are many reasons why these disgusting acts are committed and we’re afraid to say they’ll probably never stop regardless of the media attention these stories generate. Let’s take a look at how this phenomenon perpetuates itself in our nation’s schools:
Teachers are already in control. Teachers are in a position where students are supposed to listen to them. The majority of students, whether they care to do well in school or not, recognize the control a teacher has over a class. This places the teacher in a far different position than high school students’ other love interests: each other. Teachers are not peers of the students which makes this a dangerous two-way street. While students are typically too young (under 18) to be making a legal decision they are drawn to having a sexual relationship with a teacher or someone older. Teachers that are driven to have sex with their students are people that have trouble dealing with their control and something clicks in their heads that it is okay to do whatever they want with their students.
They prey on the vulnerable student. Teachers are in a position on a daily basis to see their students and how they interact with other students. When a preying teacher notices a student with poor self-esteem this student moves to the top of the list. The vulnerable student feels compelled to please the teacher and often won’t admit to what happened out of fear of continued embarrassment.
They’re attracted to them. Some of these stories are just as simple as one person being attracted to another and they don’t fear the consequences because their attraction is too strong. Ridiculous? Of course it is but these people have problems to begin with and if they meet someone they are into then they’re going to act on their impulses. They view these relationships like any others they’ve had in life and refuse to see the harm they’ve done to the student and their families.

Teacher-Student Sex Said to Be Not Unusual

The girl liked her teacher from the moment she stepped into his remedial class. When he treated all his students to chocolate bars one day, her affection for him, for his genial ways and hard muscles, flared into desire. When he offered extra credit to anyone who helped him mark papers, she jumped at the chance. She flirted and flirted. Then one day he made a move.
“We were looking at each other in the elevator from the basement to the third floor, and it goes really slow,” she said. “And we just kissed right there. When you’re a sophomore and you’re with a teacher, your head goes crazy. I was in ecstasy.”
The girl, a Richmond Hill High School student, is almost a year older now, and perhaps wiser than she should have to be. After an entire school year of secret romance, “I got my heart broken,” she said. “He only wanted to have a good time, and after that it’s bye-bye.”
If she has any consolation, it is that she is far from alone. She has company in thousands of other girls and boys across the country who have been sexually involved with teachers.
The most notorious recent example is Christina, the 15-year-old East Harlem girl who crossed the country with her former gym teacher. He has since been charged with kidnapping her. Prosecutors have considered charging Mr. Harris with statutory rape, but that charge may never emerge if prosecutors cannot prove that the couple had sex in New York. The teen-ager has said their relationship became intimate only after the two began their odyssey across the country.
“Sex between teachers and students is much more common than people are willing to acknowledge,” said Charol Shakeshaft, a Hofstra University professor and co-author of a four-year study on school sexual abuse that appeared this March in Phi Delta Kappan, an education journal.
Despite its frequency, teacher-student sex is always wrong, educators said, a betrayal of trust that is harmful to the student and indicative of an emotional defect in the teacher.
A vast majority of teachers never molest their students and would never take advantage of a child’s crush, researchers and school officials said. But Ms. Shakeshaft’s study quoted findings that up to 5 percent of teachers engage in some form of sexual abuse of students, from inappropriate verbal flirtation to intercourse. A nationwide survey in 1993 by the American Association of University Women found that nearly 15 percent of 8th to 11th graders, 25 percent of girls and 10 percent of boys, had been sexually harassed by a staff member.
The most striking statistics come from a 1991 survey of students at a North Carolina high school, published in The Journal of Education Research, in which 13 percent of graduates said they had had sex with a teacher.
That 13 percent may be exaggerated, Ms. Shakeshaft said, but she said that students tended to be more accurate reporters of sexual contact than are teachers or principals, who often try to cover up the incidents.
In New York City, 110 cases of school sexual abuse have been reported since 1991, most of them concerning some kind of willing involvement by a smitten student.
Cases like Christina’s and the Richmond Hill student’s fall into the category of what Ms. Shakeshaft’s study called “bad judgment romance,” in which young male teachers become intimate with attractive older female students. Cases involving female teachers and male students, and homosexual liaisons, are much rarer.
“These abusers saw their actions as either harmless or romantic,” the report said. Ms. Shakeshaft estimated that “bad judgment” abusers outnumbered pedophiles — who seek work in schools to molest children — 2 to 1. She found that female victims in high schools most often looked mature for their age and had “bad girl” reputations.
As for the teachers, their inability to resist the temptations of young students indicates something deeply wrong emotionally, psychologists said.
Normally, said Bonnie Jacobson, a clinical psychologist and author of books on relationships, young children have a sense of being perfect and all powerful, but grow out of it at age 4. But teachers, therapists and others in a position of power who have never resolved that phase can start taking to heart the admiration they get from students and subordinates, and abuse it.
“They really use the person who’s giving that level of adoration,” she said. “It’s not always conscious, but it’s very destructive, very destructive.”
After Ms. Shakeshaft’s study came out, more than a dozen women wrote her to describe the pain they still felt over affairs, some of them years old.
“The pain is lifelong,” she said. “They never are able to overcome the sense of betrayal over what happened. And they wrote us about how they had trouble trusting, trouble believing, and trouble carrying on intimate relations as adults.”
In recent years, public discussion of sexual harassment in schools and universities has made teachers more aware than ever that they should not take advantage of students.
But at the same time, said Alvin Cooper, clinical director of the San Jose Marital and Sexuality Center, “The older man falls victim to Calvin Klein commercials with 14- or 15-year-old girls. The media make for a lot of sexual acting out in our society.”
The policy in the New York City schools is quite clear on the penalty for employees who sexually abuse students, regardless of age.
“There’s an absolute line,” said John Ferrandino, superintendent of New York’s high schools. “Any kind of dating and sexual relations is a violation. We bring you up on charges, we throw you out, we get you arrested if we can.”
School employees are required to report all suspected abuse cases immediately to investigators. Yet the affairs continue to occur at a steady rate, school officials said.
“There are very many relationship cases we never hear about,” said Regina Loughran, the special counsel handling Christina’s case for the Special Investigator’s office of the Board of Education. “Very often, you hear about it only if the relationship goes bad.”
Ms. Shakeshaft’s study found that the teachers most likely to fall into sexual relationships with their students were those who spent time with them individually or after school: coaches, counselors and teachers of drama, art, music and gym.
A sampling of recent relationship cases handled by Ms. Loughran’s office demonstrated that. A track coach, David Drummond, at Automotive High School in Brooklyn pleaded guilty to third-degree rape after having sex with a 15-year-old female student. Others accused of abuse were a gym teacher, Andre Cadet, at Julia Richman High School in Manhattan; several young school safety officers, and a couple of guidance counselors. One counselor, Roger Krubiner of Park West High School, was accused of persuading a girl to have sex with him and pose for nude pictures.
In Christina’s case, at least, her teacher, Glenn Harris, was apparently not playing with her. He ruined his career, spent all his money and tried to marry her.
Not all stories of teacher-student romance end as badly as hers, with the teacher facing criminal charges, but to educators, what Mr. Harris did was undeniably wrong.
“It might be a cute love story,” Mr. Ferrandino said, “But, it’s corny, but being a teacher is a sacred trust, and you have to handle it like that.”

Affair with Chinese Student Leaves American Behind Bars

The young American English instructor at a certain English training college in Zhuhai, China’s southern Guangdong province got himself involved in a love affair with one of his students that all went horribly wrong the second he found himself dumped.
On hearing the news of the end of the relationship, John (not his real name) threaten the girl with publishing naked pictures he had taken on his phone, on the internet. He demanded RMB 100 thousand to destroy the naked pictures. Last week the Mid-level People’s Court of Zhuhai sentenced the American to 3 year’s imprisonment for blackmail. On completion of the sentence he will be removed from the country.
Upon having the sentence translated to him, the defendant broke down in his chair sobbing and begged the judge for the right to appeal for a lighter sentence. John even pleaded with the judge for a community service sentence, anything to avoid a Chinese jail. John is due for an appeal soon.
John, aged 22 moved to Zhuhai to work as an Oral English Instructor in 2008. It was there that he met Miss Luo and they struck it off straight away. On the evening of the 25th October John invited Luo to his apartment for a meal. According to the American’s testimony in court: “We had fun that evening and got on really well.” It was then that the couple made love. It was that night that while Luo was in the shower, John took photos of her on his mobile phone camera. One of the three photos he took showed her naked above the waist.

John explained that when he took the pictures she knew all about them and didn’t refuse or mind them being taken. The next day Miss Luo left for Hangzhou, Zhejiang province on the other side of the country. The two of them remained in touch but after a short while Luo told John that she had a boyfriend in Hangzhou and that she wanted to break up. John felt that he had been cheated and swore to take his revenge on her.
On 30th November 2008 John contacted Luo via QQ and sent her one of the naked photos, tricking her by saying he had lots more naked pictures that she didn’t know about, as well video footage. John demanded Luo back or he would send the snaps and videos to others. But after some more discussions he agreed to accept RMB 100 thousand in exchange for the illicit material.
Moments later Luo called Zhuhai police and upon arriving at John’s apartment they made their arrest.

It is terrible that a teacher having sex with their students. The love between a teacher and a student is not unusual on chinese campus.Even I don’t think it is immoral for them to have sexual intercourse.because for teachers and students in unversities,they both have grown up into adults and they should shoulder full responsibility for their action.Private life should be safeguarded by law and outsiders have no say in such things.Otherwise,for teachers and students who are still in high school or primary school,love and sex should be strictly prohibited.Teenagers are prone to be enticed into doing irresponsible things and their teachers should teach them right values and rules which we live by.So it is unacceptable for adolesents to have sex with their teacher.
Sometimes I think it is human nature for a student to appreciate his or her brilliant teacher. But I don’t want to hear the disgusting things that teachers have sex with their students. It indicates that the teachers old but not old enough is most vulnerable. The average age of the students is 15.7. The standard deviations are 5.41 for teachers and 1.56 for students, comparatively. The difference in the standard deviations means in this sexual relationship, the boys are usually the passive side because they are being chosen. And it also reflects that 15-year-old age is the most fresh, cute part of youth. Attracted by the good-looking is natural, that’s why we see more beautiful women in the top 10 of the list.

I do not really take teacher-student sex seriously. I have heard it before, but some of it came to the so-called happy endings, teacher just married the student. I consider it is nothing wrong that teacher and student have sex building on the fundamental of love, which is one of the noblest emotions of human being, for the reason that everyone has freedom to pursuit his love. Sexual relationship, just as I can ever imagine, is as less evil between teachers and students than between others.
I would consider people over blame the sex between teachers and students, believing that since the teacher is the main course, they should hold much more responsibilities than others. What they neglect is that teachers, in essense, are no more than a job. What dedicate their superiority is their working target are people, espencially young people. So to some extent they should take responsibilities, but what in more is they should never be over-ruled by ethics.

It is a really awesome and sick story that a teacher has sex with the student. And this trend is getting more and more serious. There are several factors causing this phenomenon happens continuously. Firstly, we lack relevant laws to restrict the teachers’ behaviors. The teachers who have done these things just get some criticism and little punishment from school, which means little to them. Secondly, just as an old saying goes ”It could not make a noise without two palms”. The student herself has her own responsibility. As is reported, those students who make sex with the teachers always have her own requirements from the teachers, such as high scores, scholarship or things like that. Facing this sick phenomenon, several things we could do. Our government must set up relevant laws and regulations to protect the rights of the students. What is more, students themselves should preserve her own moral integrity.
Most time when I hear that teachers take advantage of their students or have sex with these students, it makes me sick and I would think it is vile. In the traditional Chinese concept, teahers should take students as their children, so it is difficult for me to imagine sex relationship between teachers and students. However, there are also many cases that a teacher and his student falls in love with each other and they get married finally. For example a teacher in my junior high school married her techer and they have a happy life now. Overall, I think it is absolute crime that teachers take advantage of their students or have sex with these students who are under age.

But on the other hand, I have witnessed several romantic love stories between teacher and student. All couples are older accomplished male teachers and younger pretty female students. Unbelievable! After I browsed the linked website, I was shocked by the numerous of teacher-student sex facts. Especially so many female teachers were arrested by sex scandals, their ages among 20 to 60, which is unimaginable. I cannot understand and believe these women.

The superiority of teachers over their students should keep on whatever happens, where they are or when they are. Just respect the seniority. In modern times, a lot of people forget the etiquette that we sang high praise of in the past and even go against these virtues because these virtues have been regarded as a barrier to their freedom. Maybe this is an ethical problem.Whatever the teacher is a woman or a man,it is not the main point of this problem.If there is true love between the teacher and the student,I don’t care that they have sex together.If they both adults and really the one for the other,they can do what they want to.But I do not advocate this.
I can’t tolerant most of the student-teacher sex, because most of the teachers are just taking advantage of the students and this will only bring about permanent harm to the immature children. But if they are in true love, I think I can still accept it.

Whatever the outcome is, I think it is a violation of ethics. School teachers should conduct their own professional ethics and social ethics, students should also abide by its part to fulfill the duties of a good student, reading in their heart. Thus, it can form a harmonious campus learning environment, and create a good cultural atmosphere of the campus.
In China ,people are too shy to talk about sex. Both parents and teachers seldom teach the young something about sex. The lack of sex knowledge sometimes leads to more unhealthy sex behavior. In my opinion, avoiding talking about sex in front of the young isn’t necessary. It is important to teach the young some knowledge about sex in a correct way and teach them to prectect themselves. However, I don’t think the Teacher-Student Sex is usual. After reading the news on NEW YORK TIMES, I feel the phenomenon is terrible. As a teacher, one has the obligations to obey the professional ethics . He/she should try his/her best to help the students rather than take advantage of them.

Having sex with whom is people’s right,if they do love each other, the other people shouldn’t scold them. However, teachers not only have responsibilities to teach their students knowledge on books but also have responsibilities to teach or guide their students on other things such as love and sex. As a teacher,you should put your student in the first when you make decisions including having sex with him or her. Because they are not rational and they don’t know what’s the real love. So if the teacher is rational and does love the student, prepare to take care of him or her, it’s their freedom to have sex!
It seems very unacceptable to us that teachers took advantage of their students, because the education we took always depicted teachers a respectable and gracious people. In this situation, I think the teacher has done something illegal and should be punished. The second reason is maybe the teacher have some power and he or she can help the student if the student is willing to have sex with the teacher. This is also illegal. And the third reason is they attract each other. In my opinion, no matter which kind of reason it is based on, the teacher shouldn’t have sex with the student. It is against the social order!

I have heard about this problem in China before, but I never know that there is similar situation in America. Generally speaking, this is a bad, even horrible thing. But if the student is already an adult, and the accident happened in a consensual basis, then the situation may deserve a second thought. However, a symptom likes above comes into China. Newspaper headlines written with “A young male teacher raped a beautiful girl who is only 15”, “an old teacher act indecently towards five of his pupils”. In China’s traditional culture, teachers are considered to instruct knowledge as well as lead a example for behavior standard, and teachers should never have any close relationship with students. It should be condemned if the sex relation takes place resulting from the original human libido. Putting aside the moral, the most unforgivable is that this behavior profanes the relationship between teacher and student. Teacher- student sex should be criticized and prohibited.
I remember some newspapers have reported that some students have sex with their tutors for a higher mark or other privilege. This kind of relationship is regarded as illegitimate and unfair for any other students. It is also harmful for the academic environment of colleges. University is a holy place to absorb knowledge, and it should be a place to learn how to behave as a responsible man or woman. Students should respect themselves while teachers should set a good example! All of us must resist this bad current tendency of teacher-student sex.

I think,if the teacher and the student who is minor or under 18 age have sex relationship,it is absolutely a crim. In my opinion, it is irresponsible for a teacher to sex with students. First of all, teenagers are not mature enough to consider their whole life and control their behaviors. They even don’t reflect on the consequences of their impulse. But teachers are adults who should know the harm of teacher-student sex. Secondly, teachers are the stronger person at school. Sometimes, it’s easy for them to take advantage of a student. And students are too weak to refuse their teacher. So teachers have a duty and responsibility to protect and teach students. I regard teacher as a sacred trust and respect all of the teachers greatly all of my days. As we all know, the most important thing for a teacher is to guide his student to learn useful knowledge and skills rather than flirt with them. One of my teacher in my junior high school is my headmaster’s spouse as well as his student before. That is ,we all know ,the teacher-student love. May be there are not a few example like them. However, they are really in love with each other and they married and had children together. I think that is acceptable.
It’s totally unbelievable for me to hear about a teacher commit sexual harassment to his students. It’s really unacceptable. However, teacher-student sex is truly exist. Not only in high schools and universities, but also in the primary schools. Most of these cases are totally sin.
