'10 English Movies

FREE CHOICE ENGLISH MOVIE LIBRARY

To facilitate autonomous learning strategies, the Sun Yat-sen University department of post-graduate English teaching for non-English majors has created an English movie library. All of the movies are English language with English or no subtitles. (There are absolutely no Chinese subtitles because they hinder English acquisition.)
The movies may only be accessed through campus computers, by students of the Holistic English Program and may not be downloaded.

All movies have been screened for compliance with Chinese law that prohibits excessive foul language, nudity or violence.

If you would like to see a movie added to the library, post your suggestion below.

Problems should be addressed to Jerry at hanyingm@mail.sysu.edu.cn

Thank you for providing us with so many movies and learning resources!

  • Candy Class 3C

I’d like to add some in the musical category like once, an Ireland story about two musicians. ‘Mamma Mia”! by Meryl Streep, one of my admirable actors. You will be impressed if you have seen her excellent performance in The Devil Wears Prada. “High school music” is also very proper for student on campus. Last but not least, I’d appreciate you to add some cartoons like “up”, “the princess and the frogs” etc. Thank you for your efforts!

  • Angela Class 16C

    Phantom of The Opera
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

    EDITOR’S NOTE: CONTACT THE TECHNITION

Thanks a million for providing so many movies to us. It is indeed good news for students who wants to learn English by movies, without Chinese subtitles. You know, it is not that easy to download movies with English subtitles only.
Among the movies, some have to be recommended, such as Schindler’s List and Shawshank Redemption. Apart from movies, I would also like to download some TV series, if you got some, such as Band of Brothers and 24 hours.
There is one more thing I want to add. The bandwidth of the website is inadequate; it always takes nights to download a movie. It always take hours or even days to download a movie, while the rate of downloading in another SYSU website call BOJI is much more higher; We can download a movie in that website just by minutes!

Firstly, thank you for sharing. Movie makes me crazy recently. You know, I do not like movie in the previous days. Because I think that it is a waste of time. You have to spend about two ours before the PC. But, I sense my wrong. Movie can make us relax and improve our listening. At the same time, you will find that it is also a topic talking about with your friends. Love the movie, love the life.

  • Thank you so much for providing us such a way to get closer to so many English movies, most of these movies are really wonderful and enjoyable. Also, I want to say how much I like such a way (Learn by Watching English Movies) to teach English: it is so interesting, so relaxing, and so impressive. I wouldn’t be lying if I say it is the best way for us postgraduate students who are not majoring English to learn English.
I am myself a super fan of movies, so I want to share with you some of my favorite movies. Hopefully, you will enjoy these movies, too!!!
Pianist, The Professional (Léon), Up, Closer.

Thank you for sharing so many English movies with us. I like The Terminal very much which was filled with fun, natural expression and significations on national love and individual’s life. To my opinion, English movies especially the US ones are famous for their special techniques or open performance. After watching some classic movies such as Forrest Gump, Schindler’s List, and so on, I realized that there were much more features on English movies. They may be emphasizing on the thought and power of a special people, they may give introspection to the history, and the like, whose most charming part were the way of telling a story with humor or sententiousness while it made people moved successfully.

The movies of holistic English give us a systematic and definite direction to learn purer English than before. I haven’t heard most of them before. Through them, I could understand western culture better. I am sincerely willing to give my expression to Professor Wolff’s gratitude. He tells us how to find a feasible and effective way to improve our English. He is a pious and professional guide.

  • claire class 11C

First, I want to thank you for sharing so many movies. I like them very much. Second, I’d prefer to the movie “Hotel Rwanda” which telling me the word of universal love. Because I think human being always selfish. Last, I’m looking forward to your movies.

  • Tina Class 2C

Through watching English movies, we can not only practice English, but also learn more about the culture of the ourside world. The process is enjoyable and beneficial. I really appreciate the Holistic English program.

There are so many classical movies, which I love so much. Thank you for providing us with so many wonderful movies. But it is a pity that the download speed is a little slow. It always takes several hours to download it, sometimes much more. Once I spent three days to download the “Working Girl”. Anyway, thank you very much!

  • Sue Class 11C

Thank you very much for providing so many movie resources to us. I had download some movies from the movie library. If possible,I will go to the CD shop and buy some excellent ones.

  • Delta Class 11C

At first, I must thank you for your providing so many movies to us. I had downloaded some of them. Thank you very much. But it is a pity to say that I could not enter this web site from three weeks ago. I tried many times, but it is vain. I don’t know the reason. But it doesn’t matter. I love the movies and I will ask my classmate for help by using her computer to download the movies, then, use the mobile disk to copy the movies onto my computer. Please accept my sincere thanks again.

  • Andrea class 2C

I should say that these movies are so excellent! I didn’t watch many English movies before; I have just watched some famous movies, such as the Titanic, Gone with the wind Pearl Harbor and so on. I like watching American teleplay, for example The Desperate Housewife. It is not only about the relationship of family but also about the friends. I can learn more from it. From this class, I knew more interesting movies. I have never heard of these movies before. I found all of them were really good movies. For example, from the movie Hotel Rwanda I saw a spirit of mutual love. People under desperate conditions should never give up there hope. The movie Walking Girl told us to protect our own ideas in work, and how to deal with the relationship with our boss. The movie Coach Carter let me know how important a good teacher is! Mr. Carter did every thing he could to help the boys to get a good future, he did not care how great pressure he had faced, and at last he succeed.

  • Diana Class 1C

I would like to offer my gratitude to Martin and the staffs helped building up this precious library. This semester with the help of Martin, we watched several new movies and through which we acquainted ourselves with new cultures, historical events and inspirational stories related to our major which are good examples to help us find out the true meaning of study, work, love and even life. Though some of them are old, they are classical to be watched and learned from.
The classification of the movies is so specific that we can easily locate our favorite ones. Well, my favorite films are in love catalogue, since I am a girl believed in true love and also think that love makes the world around, I would like to see love stories from all other countries. Love is not restrained to the relationship between lovers but includes friendship and family love. So may be the library could add some more movies in this catalogue, such as Forrest Gump. I do love this movie very much; it doesn’t only tell us a story of love, but family love given by a great mother. It encourages us that children are all talent; the main point is how the parents raise and treat them. Idiot can also become a community star, a hero, a successful business man; clumsy ones can also have beautiful mates and clever child. The movie tells us love in a special way, making us touch .It is worth of our watching it.

  • Ivan Class 4C

Wow, so many English movies here! I really appreciate your hard work to share so many English movies with us. They are our good resources to learn English. The movies with English or no subtitle is very important to the English learning. I’ve watched many English movies before but most of them are with Chinese subtitle. Finally I find that Chinese subtitle is a great obstacle to learn English from the movie because I can’t stop to watch the Chinese subtitle. Now, I have easy access to so many resources and I should take advantage of them. Thank you again!

  • Sarah Class 4C

Thank you very much for the English movie library! It provides us so many movies and makes us convenient.
Among the movies I have watched, I like “Working Girl” very much. The story shows us a very creative and clever girl. Her boss stole her idea and her fruit of labor, but she was clever enough to protect her intellectual property successfully. This movie really encourages me! After graduating from school, we will go to work. Then it is essential to work hard, as well as to protect the fruit of labor of our own.
By the way, I am surprised to find Disney movies here!

  • Sally Class 3C

Thank you for providing us with so many movies. By watching the movies, we will not only improve our English, but also think more about the world, the society and the humanity.

  • Elaine Class 8C

Thank you for providing so many movies to us. There are many movies that I had seen before, I like them, and my favorite movie is Gone With the Wind. I am glad to have assess to this great movie library.

  • Ruby Class 1C

I always believe that watching TV/movie is the best way to improve your spoken English. By watching TV/movies, you gain the access to what the Americans are talking about in daily lives, how they express their feelings and how the communication is done under different circumstances. I think it is an important factor for the success of holistic English project and of course, for the success of our English learning. When I watched movies for more than three hours, I found my brain was so stuffed with English that I had the thirst for speaking English. This is why Martin once told us again and again to create the English environment ourselves.

I’m excited to find that some of the new movies are among the list including “W” and “Milk”. Thank you and I really appreciate it.

  • Freda Class 1C

Thank you for telling us so many good movies.

  • Linda Class 10C

In this English class, we have watched many really classical movies. Some of them are so interesting and enjoyable that they make profound impressions on me. Take the movie “Coach Carter” for example. I learn that nothing is impossible and we can achieve success by our own efforts from this movie. I think watching movies is also a good way to improve our English. Thank you for sharing these movies with us. I will watch as many movies as I can.

  • MICHAEL ZSTU7
