INTRODUCTION
At any given moment there are twice as many Chinese learning English as there are citizens of the U.S.A. English instruction begins in kindergarten and continues into postgraduate study, for both English majors and non-English majors. Everyone in China must study English. Local variants of English such as Chinglish and Chinese English are discouraged as inappropriate. Students are placed under extreme pressure to “master” English. National English competency exams are a predicate to further study or employment. China employs more than 150,000 native English speakers to teach English in its schools. Some programs encourage Chinese learners of English to locate foreigners on the street and run up to them and yell “Hello” in the foreigner’s face. This crazy approach is predicated upon the belief that the only way to improve your English is to engage with a native English speaker. Teaching English as a Foreign Language in China is predicated upon 4 GREAT LIES.
1. FIRST LIE – YOU MUST MASTER ENGLISH
Every Chinese learner of English is instructed that they must “master” English.
Due to the inordinate influence of the British Council on English learning in China, most Chinese students of English own the Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary or Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary. These are also the most available dictionaries in school libraries and book stores throughout China.

China EFL: The Four Great Lies

I study in Sun Yat-sen University. It profounded the problem of our English study. It is true and all I agree with you. I familiate with all the Perspectives. It is a good artical.
I just give my suggestion in some details. I think some dates like in the second lie will be more belivable to show the source. In another hand, I think you just give us a theoratical study,if more practical will be better. After all, so many professor have realize the similar problems.
I agree with most of the opinions that the paper menthioned. I want to talk about my thoughts on MASTER ENGLISH.
Before I went to the collage, I also belive that we should master English. However, in my view, it is nothing about being able to leaning the dictionary by heart or the grades of exams. Mastering English means being good at listening, reading, writing and speaking English just like a local citizen of English speaking country.
Just because I have such thoughts, I sometimes do not have confidence to speak English, for I think I do not master English. However, one day, in a public lecture given by a foreigner, a Chinese man asked many good questions. He did not speak very excellent English but Chinglish. But he expressed himself very clearly and the contents he said were very useful. At that time, I understand, English is a tool for people to communicate. Sometimes, when we try our best to master it, we pay more attention on the form instead of substance.
So, even we can never master English, we can still use it to communicate and express ourselves to people from other contries.

I am sure that holistic English will revolutionize English learning and teaching in China.
Believe makes your dream come true.
There are no secrets in English learning, in any lanauage learning. The only way to improve one”s English is to listen more, speak more, read more and write more,Simple!
Simple, but overwhelmingly strong!
Between dream and reality, we shoud take Joy to fill it. And the joy we should fill begins from English movies, begins from red hats.
Holistic English, one of the greatest discoveries in 21st century.

I agree with your all opinions. Yeah, there are so many bad habits in our English learning, the four points referred above are all important!
When I began to learn English, I added some notes beside the English words to remember how to read them, so Chinglish unavoidable! While I found it was so interesting to learn English by the films and the songs!
One more method is to speak English with foreigners. But whether she/he is native is not important.Steel sharpens steel, right?
If you can bring English in you life, such as mobile phone, diary, and communication ,that will be supercalifraglisticexpialidocious!

1. The most damaging lie to students.
Kids are terrified of making mistakes in front of their friends, because the mocking laughter and taunts that follow are wild and uncalled-for. One person has the courage to put his/her hand up, and the punishment for doing so is ridicule for the tiniest error. This causes everyone to seize up the moment a question is asked.
They also don’t want to be thought of as crazy, which is preposterous. I ask Chinese people to clarify: “So if you speak English to a foreigner, it’s okay; not weird. If you speak English to someone who looks like a Chinese person, you belong in a hospital?”
Anyone who is learning English ought to understand that people who don’t speak it with you is not someone you’re likely to know in five years. Your career, lifestyle… everything, will carry you far away from anyone who judges you today.
2. The most obvious lie to everyone but the people of China.
I tell everyone to start talking to each other, because no foreigner is likely to be a permanent resident to act as a sounding board. Maybe a foreign teacher can tell a Chinese student if they are improving, but only after a lot of close, personal time with one of them. That’s not happening with the thin spread.
I tell the kids to go ahead and “sharpen steel against steel”, because even if it’s inefficient, it’s at least a step in the right direction. I encourage Chinese teachers to take advantage of every chance they get to speak English in front of students. If anything, they’re setting a great example.
3. The lie I most often tell people to disregard.
If I understand you, congratulations– you speak English on some level or in some incarnation!
4. The lie that everyone can agree to be a lie.
Not everyone does need to know English. You can get by perfectly well without it. Even I agree, but with a point of note:
Anyone who knows more than one language can tell you that there are certain benefits. Perhaps not even visible to those who are not bilingual. There is an advantage that ought not to be lost. In time, with enough people agreeing to speak a language, you might see trends that will cause you to wish you jumped on the bandwagon earlier.
It’s quite fresh and interesting for me to learn that there are lies and what the lies are.^_^
I have deep feelings after reading this article.I have learnt English from junior school, from simple to
complex.Language study should be an interesting affair including of experiences of life, communication, memories and so on.But in our traditional English class, the teacher has been talking about boring grammars, and say that “You must commit to memory!” loudly. May be he thought that the grammar was the most important,it could make you master English. Now I know it is a lie.
Some of my classmates pronounce beautifully(I do not find another word to express it). They should be a good partner to practise oral English. But I guess it will be a strange scene
that there are two Chinese communicating in English in their mather-land.May be it also is the reason that why native English speaker is the most popular partner to practise oral English.
The fact is that we just know the theory of learning English, but we really do not know how to practise.
We have been fixed in a framework at the begining of learning English. Therefore, no matter how we try to change, that will eventually be limited by the rules and the traditional views. Reform is not just a slogan. We must jump out of those great lies firstly, otherwise everything is empty talk.
When I was a frosh, I once had lunch with some foreigners, who were the friends of my elder brother’s wife Blair. During the dinner, they talked and talked, and I was silent and silent. James tried to speak to me, but failed and failed. The people all around thought Blair mastered English better than me. But the fact was that Blair couldn’t even write a correct separate word. And I had just got a high score. This has given me a strong impression. I must throw away the ponderous dictionary and begin to speak out.
There is a variety show named “guo guang bang bang mang”(putonghua) in Taiwan. It once had a topic about how to study English. The show invited some artists, one of whom mentioned that if you wanted to make your English better, you should not speak with an Englishman, but a Chinese who spoke English well. And his standpoint had the support of the famous English teacher Xu Wei in Taiwan.
At that time, I thought it was flimflam. But after reading this article, there are some changes in my mind. Maybe we are breathed into false information. We must tell the next generation something true.
Yes,I heard the 4 advice from my English teachers. But I firstly knew there is a languge called English when I was 12 years old.At that time,We had to learn English until middle school. And I fairly agree with you that they are lies.I think no one can master a languge, even the native speakers. We can only use the word—-grasp.Master is too much for anyone.I like the world chinglish,It is my first time to hear this word.
Quite so! Everyone of us should study English from kindergarten through postgraduates. But, actually ,many people don’t know why they should study English, maybe they just study English for their parents and teachers, not for themselves, because they are not interested in English, they study English just for applying for a good job or passing the examination. As the saying goes: interest is the best teacher. If there are not interest, how can students study English well, not to mention acquire English.
Before, I believed that remember English words is the key to study it well, so I watched the word list in every free time, it was so tired. But, when I begin to watch some excellent English articles and movies, I realize that English is not so dull and hard, English is interesting.
We should know that we are graduate students, maybe as the teacher said it is the last time for us to acquire English. So what we should do is to study for ourselves, develop our interest in English, then acquire English gradually.
Yes, the lies you said exist in most of the places in China. According to my experience, I have started to learn English since I was a 10 years old. I have encountered many English teachers, most of them emphasized on mastering it, getting high score in the examination. But I am lucky to have two English teachers that inspire my interest in English. They both encourage the students to speak, to use English in our daily life, especially my high school English teacher. I always remember her saying “don’t be shy, just try!” And I develop my interest in reading English newspaper and novel. So, I guess we need more teachers like Martin and my high school English teacher.
I agree that”China needs to firmly grasp the difference between study, learn and acquire”. I think Enlish is a tool for most people in China. Not everyone should master it greatly. What we need to do is communicating with the world freely and conveniently. However,English has become a course like mathmatics, history ,which many students take as a burden. No interest,no motivation.Maybe it’s the reason that I can’t learn it well.
I remember in the second class, our professor told us the 4 lies of China. At that time, I asked myself in my mind, am I a person who with this 4 lies. Of course, I am! Because when we were learning English at beginning, all of the teachers told us, everyone in China need learn English and you student must master English, else you can’t live well in future. Some of them told us “speak, just speak more ,no matter true or not ”.Now, I have my own ideas, not everyone in China need to learn English and master English is too difficulty for most of us. We can learn English well with a person who is not a native English, and chingish also very well. In a word, you should think about you future and do everything in your own way.
As a student learned English 16 years in China, I fully agree with the “four great lies”.
It is really unnecessary for every one of us to learn English, as for the reasons that in our future career and life, most of us won’t use English. So, why they should waste their time and energy to learn such a useless thing? It is because that this is asked by the ministry of education. As a result, most of the students learn English for the tests. Since their aim is to get good scores in tests, they should follow the rules of tests. Regrettably, the rules are made by those so called experts who totally ignored the really purpose of learning English. Then, the other three “lies” generated. They said the Chinglish is wrong, we must follow. They said you should practice to native speakers to improve your English, we must follow. They said you should master English, we must follow. Or, they would fall you in the exams.
We all know they are lies, but we have to accept, because they are rulers we must obey.
To the third lie,I deeply understood it after the second holistic English class——discussion about 《THE TERMINAL》. As the teacher said:“steel sharpens steel”,we will progress with each other quickly by speaking English with classmates whose oral English is similar. Through communicating in daily life,we will pay less attention to the grammar and wring, while practice the feeling of speaking English as casually as possible.
For years of studying, we don’t ask ourselves why we would learn English. But when I read the article of THE FOUR GREAT LIES, I was shocked. Yes, the education of English in china is something wrong. Even the native experts in English speaking country can not master English completely. How we master English. And for the most of Chinese, English is not necessary. As an example of me, I just need to read some English monographs and dissertations about mathematics or computers. The trouble is not about language. So, I think it is not necessary to learn English too much sometimes. Of course, it is good to learn English more.
There are many English exams either in China or USA, such as TOEFL, GRE and so on. So it is not just China that requires master English. Although not all can achieved, Mastering English is a good ambition for Chinese, because China is becoming the third economic entity of the world, just behind USA and Japan. More and more foreigners, especially the transnational corporations flood to China for its potential. The only way to communicate is that the foreigner learns Chinese or the Chinese learn English. As we know it is harder for foreigners to learn Chinese than Chinese to learn English.
Speaking with a native speaker is a way to learn English better, but not the only way as the teachers suggest. Whether Chinglish is good or not, nowadays if you want to summit a paper to an English magazine, you need English but not Chinglish. However, we don’t just obey the rule, and we create new words and new expressions.
Language is a tool for communication. so if you do not dream to be a Linguist, it’s not necessary for you to be extremely skilled at English. When we can communicate with people barrier-free and make other understand what we say we are successful in learning English. If you realize this maybe you will learn English with little pressure.
In china, learning English is not just to have the skill to communicate with foreigners, but also in order to get a good mark, that is the main purpose for most students. The four “great lies” in this paper may not appear the max factor that block the way we learn in, but I really agree with these opinions. Master English is a idea that influence over all the native English teachers, from which we can see that today when the primary schools` kids start their first year of English learning, their learn how to speak English instead how to memorize long lists of English words and their definitions, or set phrases.
I have some reflection on this topic.what’s the present status of China’s English learning? How many native Chinese can speak fluent English? Is China’s English education successful or failed?
When I ask these questions myself, I feel very depressed.
In China, when graduation, a college student has worked hard to learn English for ten years. Six in the middle school, and four at university. He also passes CET-4, many even CET-6. He scores very well when he take examinations. However, he can’t talk to a foreigner freely. He can’t understand books of English version completely, either. Writing a paper also seems too difficult for him. Why? It doesn’t make sense.
I’m excited to see that “FOURTH LIE – EVERYONE IN CHINA NEEDS TO LEARN ENGLISH”, this is also my opinion. I’m puzzled by this question why we should study English for so many years, especially after we having study for so long time, we mostly still can not express ourselves freely in English. Just like that “They have enough knowledge about English to pass the Chinese National proficiency examinations but they cannot produce comprehensible oral or written English.” Yes, but why? In my memory, English teacher always tell us one thing “You must read more and more , tomorrow we’ll have a quiz”, quiz, quiz, quiz, we have so many quizs waiting for us, we just read for quiz, but not for English. We just have learned how to pass these examinations for many years, we know more about examinations than English.
For lie one, although we are told to master English, I think most of us know it well that we can not master it. We speak Chinese every day even talk in Chinese in our dreams, still we can not master Chinese. How can we master English just by memorizing words and phrases? We are learning English to pass exams, be matriculated in the famous universities or to get a good job.
The second lie impresses me most because I have never thought that we can improve our English by talking to each other in chinglish. I think it is the most important thing I learned from Professor Wolff.
This article really reflects some potential problems about Chinese learning English.I remembered clearly when I was in senior high school,a excellent student got the highest score in our English test. Surprisingly, his successful experience was that he has memorized the whole English-Chinese dictionary. From then on,many of our classmates began to study English by memorizing words on dictionary. However, there is little effective. we always considered that if we have remembered much more words ,grammar and got a high score in national English test,we have mastered English .That is a misunderstanding.our real objective is realizing our communication with others, but those words and grammer just learning by heart are useless. It is not easy to master a language, let alone a foreign language.I think, the utilizaton of English ,to the greatest extent,is putting it into practice. Read more, listen more, write more and speak more English.
You are right. The article help me reflect on myself.Yes,somehow I am afraid of English.Because I think I can’t master it and my chingish is so bad,I need improve my English and I have no chance to communicate with a native speaker. What can I do? Now I am confronting the frustration ,but I will not give up.Because I can’t waste many years learning English.
This article recalled my memory about English learning in high school. My English always said that,” Check your grammar and pronunciation, you are speaking Chinese English.”
To be honest, her English is also poor. Usually, she responds to students’ questions followed the correct answers. Once, my classmate consults a question to her in the exercise book with a wrong answer at first. The result of the story is simple.
It is so great that Chinese English is appropriate, which give me confidence to study English better.
In my opinion, since the significant of language is to communicate, it’s no need for everyone to learn English well, much less to say ‘we should master English’. You can even learn without English if you are able to communicate well internationally by whatever methods you use. And for those who will never have contact with foreigners or no need to use English, they can absolutely ignore the English skills. As a matter of fact, in today’s society, with the division of labor becoming more and more thorough, it has been widely thought that English skills should be acquired according to the actual demands. Different people should concentrate on different English skills and differ in the learning-level, which depend on actual demands such as job environment or self interest. Personally I believe that the division in acquiring English skills and levels will be more significant.
After reading the paper “The four great lies”, I agree with most of what you said. What’s more, I would like to talk something more about the 1st lie: you must master English.
In fact, not everyone should master English. Most of us learning English for several years should use English fluently, but not master it. It is enough for us to communicate with a foreigner in English. It is enough for us to read the English materials without any difficulties. It is enough for us to write some simple essays to express our ideas without any spelling mistakes. All these above are enough, and we have no necessity to master English.
In my opinion, English is only a useful language tool. However, not everybody should use English. Now I find many Chinese people use Chinglish to communicate with foreign people ,and they all understand each other well. The average Chinese business person or common citizen has no demonstrable need for anything more than Chinglish. Also we can see the curriculum is designed to teach the students all about the English language but not to learn or acquire it. I think you are right. The useful way is writing more, speaking more, reading more, and listening more.
I agree with professor totally about the “four lies”. The reason of learning English is that we want to use it to know well and commucate with outside, and now, so many developed countries use English as their offical languages.
For communcation, we only should let others to know our meanings. So that we can listen and speak, read and write are enough. I think we shouldn’t master English, even we can’t master it. Because there are so many different kinds of English. Look at our Chinese, it’s our native language, but we still can’t say we master it. In every region, there is local language, and some one is much different from others. When we speak mandarin that contains some local tones, we don’t feel it is inappropriate. But someone think Chinglish is not good, I can’t know the reason. The point of Speaking English is speaking, but not speaks with which one. Maybe speaking to a native speaker can immprove our English, but I don’t think it is necessary. If we pay more time to speak, even we just speark to ourselves, we still can speak very well. And it is unnecessary for everyone in China to learn English, because for some body, he/she may not use it all over his/her life.
English is only a communication tool, we use it. But it is unnecessary to waste too much time to master it.
Frankly speaking, it’s my first time to hear somebody to say ’the purpose of learning English is not for mastering it’ in China. I remember I say “master English” last class when professor ask us to make a comment on “steel sharpens steel”. After reading this article, I get a brand new attitude of English studying that is to unload the burden of mastering English from my shoulder, just to speak English freely and boldly, not to put to put inordinate attention on the grammar and the errors that we make in the conversation. I am Chinese, it’s normal that I speak Chinglish. May I should not blame myself on my not-so-pure English anymore.
After reading the article, I can’t agree with your opinions more.
There are so many variants of English, and the best example is American English. Everybody knows, The USA is a immigrant state, there are a lot of changes from British English to American English, such as pronounciation.
It’s a good question, why chinglish is no good. Language is just a tool to communicate. Chinglish, Chinese English, whatever, they are OK. Once a word or sentence is said by more and more people, it’s right, it’s OK. Just like “Long time no see”.
Maybe someday when you open your new Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, you will see “Good good study, day day up”. haw-haw!
There is no doubt that the views in the article break our traditional rules on learning English. I agree with most of them because they are true and make good sense. English is a language tool and it is really useful and widely used in the present world. There is a demand that we should learn about that even to use it. However, the aim of learning English is not to master it indeed. As we know, the value of the tool is not that we own it, but is that how to create new things or make good to us by using it. We read English magazine to learn about the culture of the foreign countries; we read English paper to get the good ideas of other people; we communicate with foreign people to help understanding with each other. Chinglish may be not bad because it also has the function of Language Bridge. We can speak English better and make little mistakes in using it due to speak more and make more mistakes and correct them. The key of making our English better is not scribed to speaking with a native speaker, while if we have such condition it is really good.
1.Even we don’t want to be entangled in words、grammar、compositions or something like this,we should admit that, the way to estimate our English is through examinations. And,if you want to do it well, you need to look up in dictionaries or reference books, just like that, you found the meaning of master、masterful、masterfully、masterly、mastery and so on,and then remember everything. So,it look like that we are trying to master english, actually,we have no choice but have to do so.
2.speaking with a native speaker is a good way but not the only way to make our english better. We all know that speaking with a native speaker can make us learn faster and learn something that can’t get in class. The pronunciation, slang and so on.Environment is of great importance, but when we can’t create such environment,we should depend on ourselves.
3.I don’t know what is exactly chinglish mean, for someone,Chinglish is good, since they don’t need to work with English, and just need to know some easy words and sentences, and can express themselves with several words. But as the society is developing, more and more are realted to English.Especially for those whose job is realated to english, they should do better. They are
Chinese, and they should do a good job when communicate with foreigners.Besides,if some detail faults occur, maybe a big mistake occur,so,Chinglish is not allowed.
4.Of course, not everyone in China needs to learn English. If you decide to go to country to work,I don’t think english is necessary. At least not now.If you are to be a businessman, and you have lots money, you don’t need to learn English, because you can employ others to do things for you.But if you are a college student, you should learn.Even if English will not be used in your future life, you should learn, since the college, the society, the country require you to do so.
I am so amazed after reading this composition,it is unbelievable to recognize these novelty thoughts.I am an traditional students born in China, and I was tought to study Enilish strickly. Now I know I was cheated by these four horriable lies,I will change my attitude to studying English.I will speak Chinglish loundly and talk with all my friends in English as much as possible.I will never fell embarassed to speak Chinglish loundly in our China.
Indeed, we should learn English in a more rational way. We should make it clear that for what reason we are learning English, and what the ultimate goal is of our study. And make full use of any opportunities to practice and to improve our English, or Chinglish.
We might borrow the idea from the Crazy English, to shout out what you want to say loudly. And later, we will be fearless to speak Chinglish.
Actually, I do share the views in this article, we have tortured by these artificial thoughts many years when we have grown, and most of them have already been discarded by people in the current society, such as people in ancient emphasized the importance of repeating.
The moment when I read the article I have found my problem in study of English, which is I waste much time in agony and nonsense things. I always was learning more and more grammar, being desperate in the process of mastering English by recite many English words, what a pity I am!
From now on, I will enjoy the process when I am studying English in order to acquire English rather than “master”, only in this way can I successfully conquer the difficulties in learning English, and eventually confront the frustration of functional illiteracy.
Frankly to say, I hate to finish the work that the English teacher assign to me except you. Before i have your class, the English teachers always asked us to do the program exercise and remembers the meanings of the all the words and expressions that we had met. However, i still didn’t know many words’ meanings. Meanwhile i have lost the interest of learning English and i can’t find any funny things to studying English. So at the end my English is just so so, and can’t understand their ideas when i talk with others. Of course, i also can’t speak any comprehensible words. Now i know the way of making English better is to speak more, listen more, write more and read more. And these days i write English everynight, it’s useful.
It’s true that students in China learn English when they go to school, because English course is a required course. We have to learn English to pass the exams, but we never master English. Of course it is very hard to master English for a native English not to say a foreigner.
In my opinion, we needn’t to master English. English is just a tool to study or work for some Chinese. For most Chinese, they learn a little English is enough because their work doesn’t need English and more and more foreigners are learning English. For some Chinese, if their work needs English, they can learn more English by reading more, listening more, writing more, speaking more English. Just learn and acquire, not master.
For many years ,Chinese students are required to learn priggish English grammer ,which is not highlighted in foreign countries ,but forget to speak out. Additionally, it is a new idea for me that it is a lie that “YOU CAN ONLY MAKE YOUR ENGLISH BETTER BY SPEAKING WITH A NATIVE SPEAKER”. Maybe this is a commom sense for both many Chinese English teachers and Chinese students. I think the most effctive method to improve our English level is to creat a Speaking English Environment and have the sense to speak English more and more.
I agree with much of what you mentioned in this article. I begin to study English in middle school when I was 12 years old. At that time, my English teacher taught us to memorize long lists of English words and their definitions, the grammars and let’s set phrases and Write articles often. Then I went to the college, where my teacher also taught us to memorize English words to pass the National English proficiency examinations,We rarely speak English. So many students who master the English but not speak very well. And now I think English is a tool for communication, we not only study English but also speak English. And we should change our old learning Styles to listen more, speak more.
My opinion about third lie. I think you can only improve your English efficiently by speaking with someone whose English is better than yours. I don’t mean that you cann’t get improvement if you speak with someone with poorer English than your. It works, but not quite efficiently. I don’t care whether the guy is L1 or L2. What I concern is if he speaks English better than I do.
This 4 great lies was told by Chinese English teachers again and again, so these lies turned out to be truths that we students should obey until we “master” English so well. But deep down inside,I never accepted them. Honestly, they abrogate my enthusiasm and confidence to learn English. And if I lost my passion on English, how could it be possible to learn English well? They want us to speak, listen, read and write English perfectly,it is very good expectation but kind of unrealistic. English to me is an interesting language and a utility to view the world better, rather than tough references that evaluate my potential of learning.
This article gives an insight into the problem that Chinese students learn English for more than ten years but can neither speak fluently nor write comprehensibly. I’m quite familiar with the four great lies because I have heard them either from teachers or friends many times. I used to think they are the right advices, but after reading the article, I know I’m wrong. I sincerely wish more students realize these lies and find themselves a proper way to learn English.
I only agree you with part of what you said . Most Chinese students of English settle for “mastering” a dictionary definition of English, but it is useful for the student to learn English better .If you know a few of simple word, how do you read the foreign paper and write a prefect paper. Why didn’t the Chinese litterateur win the Nobel prize? Because they can’t translate the good article to the English rather than they can’t write a beautiful article. But it is not good for a people only master dictionary all days. I can’t agree with you more that everyone in china need not learn English . Everyone in USA must learn Chinese .Speaking with a native speaker can improve our oral English, but it is not only method to improve my oral English .
After reading this article,I recall the process of learning English ,A dictionary in hand,Checking grammar and pronunciation and preparing the English exam all the time.I take a lot of time to learn English but My English is still very poor now.
The views of this article are justified,we should solve these problems in order to learn English well.
Actually, the four great lies have existed in China for many years. But some of the phenomenon in the four lies are not quite serious. For example,no one has ever told to me “YOU CAN ONLY MAKE YOUR ENGLISH BETTER BY SPEAKING WITH A NATIVE SPEAKER.”I suppose the lie that CHINGLISH IS NO GOOD is also not accpected by more and mord people in China nowadays. As we know,”Long time no see” is used in our daily lives, this is just Chinglish.
No matter who have such a distinctive opinion, I would say he is a great man.At the past 12 years,I learn English so hard, but my English still such poor,no one told me such opinion.SO many times I could not get the scholarship only because my English was poor.I was hurt time and time. It’s unfair.I never want to go abroad,I never want to do anything which should speak English. Why I should learn English well.In my opinion,If I can read some English papers ,watch English films,it is enough. In the past 12 years ,English has waste a lot of my time.
English, as any language, is just a tool to transform ideas between different people.
Don’t put too many meanings on it.
