The beginning of any new academic semester is fraught with inevitable required adjustments. The post-graduate students (pgs) are no exception. They are required to take one semester of oral English with a foreign teacher. Most pgs have had prior undergraduate experiences with this inconsequential course where the grade does not count and more often than not, the foreign teacher has a guitar and only knows how to teach English songs. The pgs have a very strong preconceived idea of what to expect from their oral English class.
As the pgs approach their 4th floor oral English classroom they are confronted by a 200 cm x 200 cm banner.
They have no idea what “Chingland” means and “Chinglish Spoken Here” goes directly against and is directly opposed to their prior teaching that Chinglish is no good. This is the pgs first indication that something may be different.
As they approach the classroom door they look puzzled and double check the room number.
As the pgs open the door, their jaws drop, they freeze in position and get a “deer in the headlights” look. Again, they double check the assigned classroom number.
As they slowly enter the room there is a Chinese buzz. The foreign teacher actually looks like a real professor. The professor loudly announces, “This is an English class and this is an English classroom. Why am I hearing Chinese? If you want to practice your Chinese leave.”
A hush falls over the room. The pgs ask permission to be seated. The professor advises that those pgs who have brought their books and a writing utensil may be seated. All others must leave and never return unprepared again. Those who did not bring their books or writing utensils are told to leave but they remain frozen in time and space. The professor explains that coming to a pg class at China’s #8 most famous university is intolerable kindergarten behavior and the guilty students are ordered to leave.
Sometimes an entire first class must be cancelled and rescheduled at a punitive time.
On the very first day of the semester the professor draws the line in the sand and demands that the pgs act like mature, responsible, serious students or get out. They have never had such an experience in their prior 16 years of education. They are in shock!
Fortunately, the professor knows how to bring the pgs out of shock and within minutes the classroom is filled with laughter as everyone settles down to begin their semester of fun with English acquisition.

I found it will be very interesting as I entered the classroom. It is so different from the classroom I have ever met. I have experience the freedom atmosphere here. It is just like a charting room, a place for meeting. We have study English for nearly ten years, but most of us still cannot communicate with foreigners freely. Maybe it is because of the attitude “Just so so, that’s ok.” And I known it would be “Not ok!” in your class. Thanks to you martin, you let me known that do every thing cannily. We can feel that you are love teaching and love students so much.
I hope that it will be more surprise in your class, I’m sure we’ll get along very well with each other. In my eyes, although you look different with us , we must have much in common.
That was the first lesson that a foreigner teached my oral English.It gave me a really deep impression.When I stepped into the classroom,I was curious about those red hats on the table,which reminded us “speak English” in and out of class. During the class, Mr Martin told us something about himself,his family,and something about his special students.During that time the atmosphere became carefree.In short,I have learned a lot in the class,which incresed my confidence in oral communication and expanded my world view.I hope the following days may be happier with Mr Martin and my classmates.
Today, I have my first oral English lesson as a postgraduate. When Martin greets us, I feel a little nervous and excited. After a short time, I am attracted by him. Martin Wolff, a nice, humourous, strict professor, tells us some stories and encourages us like a father. I like his lovely face and the way he teachs in the class. He requires us to speak English to communicate with our classmates, allows us to enjoy the movies with food and drink, encourages us to express our answer in English. It is a new learning environment. I like it. The red hats remind us to speak English, and the remarkable red banners on the wall are special.
This teaching way is exactly what we need.
I am very glad to have the first oral English lesson.But when I entered the classroom,I was greatly surprised.This kind of room was out of my imagination,and teacher Martin`s angry shocked me again.After that , professor Martin began to have lessen in English.He told us his family especially his pride for his sons,and his experience in China ,his students and so on .I was moved by him.He was my first foreign English teacher whose loud vioce and humor affected me deeply.I hope I will be his proud student in future.
Exactly, I never had a English teacher like Professor Martin Wolf. Also, I never came across a English teacher who got the students out. I felt very nervous and terrified when the class began. A professor as fat as you could think, walked about in the classroom. I did not dare to make any eye contact with him. However, he shared his victory as a father with 9 sons. What’s more, he also told many jokes. Laughter was full of the classroom. My view of the professor was changed gradually and I found I liked the way he taught us.
“I am not Father Christmas .”We laughted.

SHORK!SHORK! SHORK! I even have no word to express my complex feeling of my first lesson in the Holistic English.We knew our teacher named Martin came from NewYork throught his talking.I had never experienced the atmosphere before.How new-type the lesson is!In the first class ,i even can not listen learly what Professor Martin said.It made me depress.So it is time to try my best to improve my englisn.And i should leave my face in dormitory as Mr Martin said.“supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” I shoud speak it loudly.
Frankly I was shocked in the first day experience when I glance at the banner outside the classroom. I felt it was interesting when I read the content of the banner. It was the first time I found that the chinglish spoken was allowed and encouraged in public. Of course I acknowledged that this had made me feel comfortable and ease before I enter the classroom. What made me more shocked may be the decoration of the classroom. More precisely it was a coffee house or some places like that. The tables were arranged in the special orientation to make sure that every participant could make face-to-face communication. Each student could own one red cap which writes “Speak English”. Dr Martin told us it was the symbol of our class and helped us get more easy to communicate. It is compact and wearing it made us feel energic .The wall of classroom was pasted with many cross bands in various colors that tell the English sentences. There was also a water dispenser and the coffee was supplied specially by Dr Martin. All of these were prepared by Dr Martin and his assistants, and I appreciated their work and expressed my thanks to them.
Before I came to my first oral English lesson，I had heard about our oral English teacher, he is famous for his rigor.Just like the rumor ,Martin is a very strict professor.When we come in the classroom he told us that if we forget to bring the yellow book and the red hat we wiil not be allowed to enter .After we entered the classroom,some of us began communicating with each other in Chinese.Martin looked very angry and announced “this is a English classroom ,if you want to practice Chinese ,leave!” Though Martin is rigorous to us ,I believe he just wants his students to study English in a better way. What an impressive day yesterday was!
I have never met such kind of teacher before. At the beginning of the class, I thought he was terribly strict. I didn’t dare to move an inch except sitting there listening to him announcing his orders as an emperor.
Another unexpected thing happened to me yesterday was that Martin chose me to be his teaching assistant. I’m a little excited and very much worried. Excited for having a special chance to improve my English, but worried about letting him down. Anyway, I will try my best!
In my opinion,the class is interesting,it’s so different from the other classes that I have ever taken.Here,we can exchange our knowledge and thought freely.I like my oral English teacher very much for his special and humorous style.I think our oral English level will be improved quickly with the teacher’s help.
“This is an English classroom, please speak English not Chinese! Thank you!” Mr. Martin said to me with a smile. when I was talking with my classmates about the desk. I was nervous though I only said “I am sorry!” . It was the first time for me to speak with a foreigner. My oral English teacher is strict but humorous. He asked us to speak English as much as possible. That he almost did not speak Chinese in class shocked me! My oral English and listening are very poor and I could not catch what he said. But I tried my best to enjoy the class because it will be a good chance for me to improve my English . Never did I have a foreign teacher before so I must grasp the chance. I think I would improve my oral English and listening with the help of my dear professor.
Maybe I will never forget the first class that Martin gives us. It’s so different and interesting.
Martin you know that the teaching method you use is very special and splendid? We were studying English using Chinese language but now in your classroom there is only English language, just speaking English. If this environment can continue and goes on without gap then our oral English will get enormous development and swift advancement. I believe it. I remember that the words Martin said, I, Martin coming to China to teach do not just want to get more money for life but to help those people who are long for studying English and having fluent oral English to catch their success. Yeap, I was shocked. But listening to pure and clear English English just made me relax and comfortable. Martin, or I may say, Dear Professor Martin, was actually friendly, though he went repeating ‘I am strict even harsh’. When can we speak English like ‘real’ English speakers is a question, but when can we manage our own business and work effectively like American people is obviously a more important question waiting for us to answer.
And we will finally find the answer, cuz Martin will, sparing no efforts, help us to seek out!
On Monday this week, I had an oral English class .When I got into the classroom, the fist feeling was confortable. Because I had never have classes in that case. And then I wanted to talk about my teacher— Prefessor Martin. He is quite humorous, and his two words—“KFC” and ”Christmas Father” gave me a profound feeling.
In that class, all of us needed an English name .Because I had a name ever before, so I wrote “Sam” quickly on a paper which the teacher gave me, and I felt happy. But it did not last long, when the teacher looked at the paper, he asked another classmate what was it on my paper. At that moment I found my English name overturned, and then my face turned red immediately.
Although I had a little mistake in class, I felt very happy. I hope I can have a pleasant time in classes.
When it comes to oral English, the majority of students tend to believe that it is no more than a common class which we need to have, but other students conceive the class as excellent class.
The failure in former oral English class largely results from the fact that the teachers from abroad play guitar or something interesting, instead of telling how to practice our oral English in a suitable way. In Martin’s class, all indisputable evidence piles up to show that we will impart not only the air of nervous, but also the improvement of our broken speak English. As opposed to widely accepted idea that Pro. Martin would too harsh for us, I argue that we will get a teacher, even a friend , to imprint in our memory.
This is a redundant question.
When I entered the Holistic English Lab, I was amazed to see the homelike classroom and the colorful wall.

Believe it or not! It seems unbelievable for all the Chinese students,who accept the traditional concept that we should learn more American or English tongue.when I first caught the sound from professor Martin that we are in chingland,I was confused.But after the professor explained the purpose of the course,I was clear.Now,whether our oral english is poor or not,we should speak out.That means we are more self-confident than ever.So, trust me that I can do better.When it comes to other things,we will also be confident.It doesn’t mean that the things are soso.But we will try our best to do it.

This is a brand-new experience to me. Firstly, I have to admit that I was shocked the moment I entered the classroom. I never imagine my first day to English class could turn out to be like this. Of course, there is a little bit uncertainty about my future performance here, but anyway, I can feel that I will have lots of fun. I’m looking forward to improving my oral English through this rare chance.
Before having the first oral English class, I have already heard that the foreign teacher is a very strict or harsh person. I was curious about the teacher. After having the class, I think what I have heard before is not true. Professor Martin is not harsh, he just did the right thing. He is an interesting person and he really loves his students. The ‘three not’ principles are what we should do as a post-graduate students. We should respect our teacher. We are not primary scholar any more and are responsible for what we do .
And the tables in the classroom are not arranged in the normal way. I feel relax in this friendly and comfortable place. We can discuss with each other face-to-face. Professor Martin talked a lot in the first class, he is really different from any English teachers I have ever met. His teaching method is new. Maybe we do need a revolution not a evolution because we can not speak English fluently even we have learnt English for more than ten years. It is a serious question worth our considering.
Last Thursday, my English teacher had told us that we would have a very interesting foreigner to teach our oral English. So I was eager to have the oral class for a week. Just like what she said, Martin is a humor but harsh person. He usually made us laugh in class and talked with us like a friend, also he was very serious to us, especially to our attitudes in learning English. The experience of the first oral class is exciting and I believe that I will acquire more under the guide of Martin.
The first class was a success. The flowers, the mottos, the drinkings, the pens and papers, all were well-prepared. And Martin, the professor, is very passionate and skillful too. Although the room is a little small, it’s just fine, especially when it’s a class which encourages practicing English with each other.
To be frank, what impressed me the most is not the culture shock, but Martin. I really appreciate his concept of learning English, his attitude, his humor, and his rules. I just can’t wait for the next class.

By the way, Martin reminds me of adam-savage. I mean the way he entertained us, especially when he mimicked an innocent little girl’s voice. Or maybe it’s just some common American humors.

First Day Student Culture Shock
I felt a little nervous when I stepped into the Holistic English Lab, because of my poor oral English. After entered the room, professor wolff found that the book I took did not belong to me, took me to the next room to buy the book.
He shared his proud students and a few joks. leaving a responsive, humorous, passionate and strict statue. The Atmosphere changed for the better. One hour later, my tension disappeared. I felt better.
First class give a great shock. We should try our to do everything we want do, It is question of attitude. If you hope to be better in future you must take everything seriously.
After attending the first class, I had some thoughts and feelings. I found it is difficult to understand the course. Because my oral English and listening is poor. I could not follow the teacher .But the class is interesting and fresh. During the class, we laughed several times because of teacher’s humorous words. He created a friendly environment for us speaking English and communicating with each other. We can improve our listening, speaking, reading and writing. The teacher is kindhearted .He always encourage us to speak English boldly. And he teaches us how to succeed. I spent a good day. Thanks for the teacher.
Before that class, I though foreign teachers were friendly and nice. Frankly speaking, I was completely shocked after I met Professor Martin wolff who kept saying “get out” at the very beginning of the class.
I think this English course will improve my English because it seems that we have a huge amount of time to practice oral English. We are not asked to do ppt through the whole semester, which I don’t think is efficient to improve my English. And, of course, I think Martin will certainly help us. He is just a strict lovely man, not a rude guy.

When I cam to 4th floor oral English classroom, I see a strange big red banner written “Chinglish Spoken Here”. I remember that my senior high school teacher said that Chinglish is not a good thing that one use Chinese thought to speak English. So I puzzled why the professor would allow us to speak Chinglish. Did my former English teacher wrong, or the professor wrong?
The other thing shock me is that the professor’s pronunciation is more clear than all my former teacher. My college English teacher is also a foreigner, but he’s pronunciation is not as good as Mr. Martin. My lestening English is very bad, but I can understand what the professer said.
I think I will love the oral English course.

Suddenly, the Classroom became very quietly, I feel much shock and a little horrible. But after a while, the atmosphere becomes carefree because Martin is a humorous one. Before entering the holistic English lab, I was surprised by the banner that was outside the classroom. It reads “WELCOME TO CHINGLAND”. I was confused, because Chinglish had been forbidden in the English class before.
As I entered the front door of the classroom, I saw Dr. Wolff right standing directly in front of me. Dr. Wolff looked kind and lenient, for he looked like Santa Claus.
But, actually he was very strict. He was very different from other English teachers in the past 12 years of my school learning. As English is a kind of language, which is used for communicating with others, Dr. Wolff suggested us to speak more, even Chinglish!
In the past 12 years, I had almost seemed to be tied to the chariot of exams, only to recite the rules or to copy the words. As a result, I always studied passively, and never attached significance to the practical ability. But, In Dr. Wolff’s class, we are not supposed to memorize information mechanically and passively. Instead, we just encouraged to speak English and enjoy it. There’s no denying that now is the high time for me to improve my oral English skill in Dr. Wolff’s class.

We had the first oral English class on Thirsday.When I came into the classroom ,I just wondered if I had made a mistake.Because everything in the room was so different from other English class which I had taken courses in.Such as the words on the walls,the red hats on the tables ,and so on.Surprised at these things,we talked about that in Chinese.Just then our foreign professor Martin Wolff came in.He said loudly to us“Speak English”.Then he told us about his family and made several student class rules.He is humorus and risible,but he is strict with us.I hope through the oral English courses I can really improve myself in every aspect.
It was really a different experience for me to take a class like this. I mean not only the environment but also the way of teaching are just amazing. All of these are ascribed to the honored professor Wolff. He told us that we should immerse ourselves into the environment of English and be confident if we want to make great progress on learning English. Above all,I really enjoy the class.
The last course shows me an old teacher teaching us Holistic English, telling us that oral English is very important.
Many people are familiar with the proverb: Rome was not built in a day. The same as pyramid. The image of a pyramid reminds us that great success is in fact an accumulation of small achievements. The fable that tells us that even water can eventually pierce through stone also points to the importance of patience and diligence.
So I would like to cherish every course. I’m looking forward to improving my oral English through this rare chance.

Before class begins ,I thought it must be a boring lesson. However, Prof. Martin Wolff told me a different story. The first time I saw Prof. Wolff,I was deeply attracted by his cascading white beard face. He is an excellent teacher full of American’s humour and self-confident. He has a face that expressed a gamut of emotions, from rage to peaceful contentment. He spoke to us just like a kindly father did. He also requests to us to be very strict. But all the rules he made are the basic requirements of students in lessons. Maybe he just try to tell us to finish our job with good sense of responsibility.
From him,I not only learn how to improve my oral English,but also learn how to be a responsible person. I do believe I can do well in my oral English and in my future’s work and life.If you ask me “Can you do it?” I will tell you loudly ”Certainly,I can”.
When time for class, I walked into the Holistic English Lab, a classroom that the wall covered with mottos and a hat which signed “speak English “on each desk, I seated down with a question. The professor is very strict, and we were told a lot of rule about class. I was afraid, but soon, his humor made our classroom filled with laughter. I was attracted by his talking about his experience in China because it made me knew something different. Professor was right, everyone should have a correct attitude towards life and become a successful person.
The first time I came into the Holistic English Class,I was surprised about the layout of the class.It was very different from our usual classes and six or eight students sit around one desk as a group.Professor Wolff said that he will be strict with us and just so so is not Ok.However, there is a friendly entertainment atomsphere in our interest oriented class and no answers are wrong.Just participate in it.Furthermore,we aren’t required to memorize the words or vocabularies
any more when we are looking films.So it’s the most interesting and no weight class we’ve ever seen.When we enjoy the film,we enjoy the class.
“Good morning!”, Professor Wolff with a friendly voice said to us, when we arrived at the classroom. It was surprising that the classroom was full of fresh air. There were a number of colorful mottos showing on the wall. Moreover, the chairs and desks lied in small groups instead of in order. He was so kind to postpone the beginning time of the class, considering that we had another class far from Room 416, before . All of these made me feel relaxed.
Nevertheless, I was strongly shocked later, not only his strictness but also his sincere heart to his students.
It is said that, “It is the bridle and spur that makes a good horse.”Consequently, it is a meaningful chance for me to improve my holistic English.
I haven`t met so strict a teacher like Martin before,who is our oral English teacher. If you are late for class or forget to bring your textbook, beyond a doubt, you are refused to come in the classroom! We must do homework entirely what as he told, or you will get F! Frankly, I was a little afraid of him at first. But as soon as we had the first lesson, I found him very kind autually. He shared us with a lot of interesting stories, taught us to sing a song and speak the longest word. Oh, how fun the first oral English class was!
Before I have the first oral English class, I heard that our teacher is a particular professor. When I enter the classroom, I find that it is so different from what I have ever heard and met. The classroom looks like a café where we can feel comfortable and relax ourselves. And the most special thing is everyone will obtain a red hat with vivid yellow ‘SPEAK ENGLISH’ on it which could remind us to speak English loudly without pudency.

Though it’s not my first english lesson,it’s the first class which is showed in holistic english. The moment I enter the classroom, I noticed that the decorate of the classroom is totally different from anyother classroom,all of us were sitting face to face .Then,we knowed the teacher comes from America ,he is really funny and teach us a special long word.The atmosphere of the whole class was easy and peacefull,which is totally different from the specialized course showed by the chinese teachers.What’s more,the teacher even supply coffee and tea which isn’t made in china and he bought each of us a red hat, in front of which is written “SPENK ENGLISH”.
With thinking that how the speaking English lesson is like, I came into the classroom. Beyond my wildest dream, the classroom is so babyhood. Because I have never seen a classroom with so many colorful paper on the wall except children’s. However, I love the classroom as soon as I read those words writing on the colorful paper. It’s encouraged! Maybe Mr. Martin want to remind us that the mainly idea of the holistic English is to help us to prepare our future by these decoration.
Then we have our lesson. We just chat freely, the same as we usually do when the English teacher is a foreigner.
It is a nice lesson and a strict and cool man.

He was full of energy.He did not stopping speaking until class was over.Sometimes he told us interesting topic.We also were interested in it.
Before beginning the first oral English class,I have never communicated with any foreigner,and when studying in the ShanXi University,I almost spoken in chinese!So my English spoken is very weak!But after the first oral English class,I believe I also can do like other students easily communicating with foreigner!It is because that Matin tell us the way how to improve the English spoken,and encourage us to be self-confidence by talking about much his successful students’ experience.Thanks to you Martin,it’s you let me know how importance the English spoken is and how to learn!I will study hard to improve my English level from now on!I expect you next class!
