First Day Student Culture Shock

The beginning of any new academic semester is fraught with inevitable required adjustments. The post-graduate students (pgs) are no exception. They are required to take one semester of oral English with a foreign teacher. Most pgs have had prior undergraduate experiences with this inconsequential course where the grade does not count and more often than not, the foreign teacher has a guitar and only knows how to teach English songs. The pgs have a very strong preconceived idea of what to expect from their oral English class.

As the pgs approach their 4th floor oral English classroom they are confronted by a 200 cm x 200 cm banner.

chingland 2 First Day Student Culture Shock

They have no idea what “Chingland” means and “Chinglish Spoken Here” goes directly against and is directly opposed to their prior teaching that Chinglish is no good. This is the pgs first indication that something may be different.

As they approach the classroom door they look puzzled and double check the room number.

holistic lab First Day Student Culture Shock

As the pgs open the door, their jaws drop, they freeze in position and get a “deer in the headlights” look. Again, they double check the assigned classroom number.

inside lab 2 First Day Student Culture Shock

As they slowly enter the room there is a Chinese buzz. The foreign teacher actually looks like a real professor.  The professor loudly announces, “This is an English class and this is an English classroom. Why am I hearing Chinese? If you want to practice your Chinese leave.”

A hush falls over the room. The pgs ask permission to be seated. The professor advises that those pgs who have brought their books and a writing utensil may be seated. All others must leave and never return unprepared again. Those who did not bring their books or writing utensils are told to leave but they remain frozen in time and space. The professor explains that coming to a pg class at China’s #8 most famous university is intolerable kindergarten behavior and the guilty students are ordered to leave.

Sometimes an entire first class must be cancelled and rescheduled at a punitive time.

On the very first day of the semester the professor draws the line in the sand and demands that the pgs act like mature, responsible, serious students or get out. They have never had such an experience in their prior 16 years of education. They are in shock!

Fortunately, the professor knows how to bring the pgs out of shock and within minutes the classroom is filled with laughter as everyone settles down to begin their semester of fun with English acquisition.

Frankly speaking, I was very nervous for my first oral English class. After the two class of foundational English , we hurry up to the holistic lab .When we got there we ate an cold shoulder ,and I puzzled if we do something wrong. To my surprise, Mr. Wolff is a little fat and humorous man. First of all , he gave us an interesting presentation and then told some stories about his students who makes achievements to us . I known that Mr. Wolff hoped us would get some enlightenment though the stories. And I found most of students reveled in the relaxed atmosphere in the class. My English is poor and my pronunciation is not standard , and I worried others would laugh at me if I make mistakes. Mr. Wolff told us do not afraid of making mistakes because no one is perfect . Now I hope I could make progress with Martin’s help, and I look forward to the time of holistic English.

Although I had heard that the lesson would be extremely different from our traditional English lesson, I still shocked by the first sight of the classroom in terms of the position of the tables and the sentences written on the walls. Also, the English teacher gave me a huge shock because he looked so kind but he was strict and harsh as he had mention in the beginning of the lecture. By contrasting the differences between the cultures of two countries, my understanding of the comments of Martin had been increased. I think Martin wants his lessons will add excitement to our academic life.

What a great and impressive day i have enjoyed with Professor Martin and the classmates! I think professor Martin is more than a foreign teacher who just teach us how to study english. He reminded us how important an excellent attitude should be. He really cares more about our future.
Actually, when we are in our free time , we can relax and do what we like to do. However,If we are in our working time, we must follow the strict rules and responsibility at what we do. We should learn the positive attitude in our job and the daily life. Just so-so is expected to be forbidden if we want to be the best .
Only if we do our best for the man who needs help , we could show our respect to him.
We will learn more from Martin in the future!

  • When I entered the Holistic English Lab for the first moment, I realized it was unique. Colorful maxims on the wall, red chairs round several desks and freely used water made me feel it was a comfortable classroom with a conversational atmosphere. In the classs, Professor Matin told us a lot about his family and talented students, and his humor made us blur out laughter a lot. Besides, I was shocked by his attitude that “so-so” is a big NO NO! I was aware of the significance of forming a strict and serious attitude towards my study and future jobs. “Don’t take your face to the class!” Marin said. I realized, prompting our english speaking skill is not the only goal, but building confidence and courage to speak. Not english learning but english acquisition will bring us progress. Henceforth, I will try my best, wishing I can improve my oral english with the help of our strict but nice Professor Martin.

Hot weather, big sun, standing out of the class room to wait for the teacher to come back… My first oral English class just began like that. Before we enter the classroom, we guess the teacher must be mad of us, because the door was closed and someone said if we were late for class the teacher wouldn’t let us in. Actually, the teacher is really strict. We can only speak English in his class, we mustn’t be late for his class, we have to wear the red hat anywhere, etc. However, after about half an hour, I found he was a very good English teacher and also a successful father. He was not just teaching us how to learn English well, but also teaching us how to be an useful person. I respect him and feel very lucky to be his student. I hope I can improve my oral English in his class and learn more from him.

I felt very nervous in my first oral English class because of my poor listening and speaking. Before I entered into the classroom, I was afraid I can not comprehend what the teacher was saying at all. In fact some times I do not know his meaning. When I entered into the classroom, I felt surprised, the design of the room’s, every desk has plant and six red cat. The foreign teacher-Professor Martin told us some stories about his sons and his former students. He also used body language. He is a humorous teacher. I like the holistic English. I am looking forward the next class.

  • Ann class17

Red caps with ‘Speak English’ and banners with English mottos, which was my first impression of this special classroom, shocked me much. The big Martin looked kind and old-fashioned at first, but he is so strict even harsh actually. During his speaking, I know that he wants us to be better in future, which is the most crucial factor. It’s so sweet to construct such strong atmosphere to enjoy English. Something attempted, something done. Of course, I’ll try my best to improve my English without excuses and to be another good girl of Martin’s.Looking forward to the next class!

  • Rasalynn class 18

Before the first holistic english class, I have been told that the teacher was very strict. When we reached the classroom, I was shocked to find that we were all locked out. After we got into the classroom, I was still nervous and a little scared.
Although Martin looked strict, I could feel his friendly when he laughs during the class. And amasingly, I found I could understand Martin’s English mostly. After he told us some of his experiences in life, I was inspired by his positive attitude toward the life. I will do my best from now on. Finally, thanks for his little red hat.

  • Lucy class 18

When I entered the classroom. I found the teacher who teaches our oral english is a foreinger. His teaching style was different from Chinese teachers. During the class, he told something about himself and his family. He has ten children and all of them are very successfull. I must say Martin is a great father. As ten children’s father, he isn’t kindly even harsh. From him, I known why China is still a developing country. Because a great number of Chinese persons often say “so so” is ok. I have to say it is a pity for our nation. Every one should change his or her bad habit, as soon as possible.

  • armstrong_class17

Before entering the classroom, I was very surprised to the words “Chinglish Spoken Here” written on a red banner. Amazing things are just beginning, when I steped in the classroom, I was shocked by the decoration of the classroom: water machine, tea, coffee, red hat on the table and the watchword on the wall. My first reacton told me that I was in a wrong place.
“I am a very very strict teacher, even harsh”, I was very nervous when I heard the words. However, one hour later, I found Mr.wolff is a very humourous and responsible teacher. Altough my English is poor and I couldn’t follow Martin so much, I was serious to the lesson all the while. Now I hope we could get more surprise in your class.
At last, thank you, Martin Wolff, and the red hat.

  • Emma Class17

The general shock from the Holistic English class to me is that I’ve never had this kind of English class. The English teacher Professor Martin Wolff is so strict but humorous. I’ve never thought these two characteristics could be showed at the same time. Professor Wolff is pleased to share his experience and his family with us. I can feel strong confidence and self-discipline from his speaking. Actually, these are what I need. Therefore,I’m sure the special English classroom and English teacher will bring us special and fantastic English classes.

  • jose_class5

What an impressive class of oral English course I have undergone!I was told that Mr.Wolff was a very strict English teacher. So I feeled nervous when I came to have the first oral English. After I was seated, Mr.Wolff gave everyone a red hat and required us to write down an English name, which surprised me very much.During the class,I realized that Mr.Wolff was a humorous, earnest and excellent man.It is my honour to have such a teacher and I believe that I will make a great progress.I really look forward to it.

  • Kevin.class18

Frankly speaking, I felt something different the first time I saw the oral English classroom with a big red sign writting “WELCOME TO CHINELAND”. It’s so special and makes me curious to get in and have a look. After getting in the classroom, I was amazed by its fancy decoration. There were so many slogans around and also beautiful plant on the desk. Then our teacher came,a kindly old man with Bushy white beard, just like the father Chrismas. The old man told lots about himself and the class. He was a strict old man and had many rules for the class., something was quite incomprehensible from our point of view and that shocked us. But I didn’t think that I will hate it. Oppositely, I would get use to it and enjoy it, because I believe it can promote my oral English.

  • conan class 17

Actually, I have been in shock. Amazing! When my classmates got out of the classroom, because they were late or had no books, I felt nervous and puzzled at first. Previously, I had no such experience. Previously, if one is late, he says sorry and comes in, that’s ok. Previously, if one forgets bringing the book, remembers to bring it next time, that’s ok. But now, Dr Wolff taught us that it was not ok at all. As he said, coming to a pg class at China’s #8 most famous university is intolerable kindergarten behavior. He is right. We are no more children, we must act like mature, responsible, and serious. Dr Wolff is strict, even harsh. But he is a good teacher. Because he taught us not only how to learn English, but also how to be a good man. I am so lucky to learn the lesson.

  • Lucyclass4

I came up with my dear teacher Martin in the holistic English class. What he talked and instructed is so meaningful and profound that I have never imagined English language and English class can give us so much knowledge and rejoice. I learned that we should enjoy and live an English life. We should change our mobile phone language into English and say hello when we answer a phone call so that we can create a real and complete English speaking environment for ourselves. Martin is really strict, even harsh at the first sight. But what he instructed give us a lot of hints and when we have finished the class, I found that he is also amiable on the other side.

  • Alyee class 18

This is my first oral english teached by a real foreigner and I’m shockde deeply.Mr.Wolff is so full of enthusiasm that I can not believe he have retired for years. In the two classes ,he said lots of differences between chinese and America culture .Also he told us interesting stories about he and his students. Before this class I have learnde that Mr.Wollf is very strict and not well go on with .Now I changed this feeling.Hope I can have a happy studying process with him.

In my first day to attend the postgraduate oral English class, I felt so nervous. It took me a little bit time to confirm the location of the classroom because it has an unusual appearance. Professor Martin, our teacher lost his temper at the beginning for some student’s acting like children, everyone in the class was shocked. But when Martin started to talk about what the class is designed for and what rules we should obey in a decent voice, I felt better. He’s the most responsible foreign teacher I’ve ever met, looking forward to my English class this semester.

  • sophia ClassO2

Actually, I am a senior student. It is because we postgraduate recommended students are required to take the postgraduate classes that I take the oral English class. When I step into the Holistic English Lab, I found a benevolent looking old man. After a while, it is proved that my assessment is wrong. Professor Wolff is a stern and harsh man instead. However, contrary to his strict rules, his class is full of fun and humor. His education concept is so close to my senior high school teachers’ as well as the New Oriental School’s, so that some of his comment let me feel familiar and agreeable. I am expecting this semester’s oral English class, having fun with Professor Wolff, with the whole class.

  • Jerry Class02

When I came into HEL , I was impressed by the decoration and display of this classroom. There are many colorful sentences posted on the wall and red hats written ”SPEAK ENGLISH” prepared at each seat. At the beginning of the class, our teacher, Mr. Wolff shared stories about growth of his sons. He emphasized that positive attitude is very important for us to deal with the relationship between employee and employer. To be honest, Mr. Wolff is different from those foreign teachers who only teach us English songs, he wants to tell us how to be a mature and responsible man, and help us make big improvement and become successful like his sons. In a word, Mr. Wolff is a nice and responsible teacher, I am glad to be his student and looking forward to next holistic English class.

  • Jacky class 02

Honestly sperking, I was a bit nervous and afraid when I entered the classroom. I had no confidence in my level of English. It was a terrible thing for me talking with a foreigner because I was afraid of making mistakes in front of a stranger. In other words, I did not want to lose my face. This situation did not last long when I realized that professor Martin regarded all of his students as his own children. within minutes the classroom was full of laughter as we were carrying out our family dinner in a relaxed atmosphere. I am looking forward to attending the course next time.

  • Shelly class O2

When I came into the HEL, I was impressed by the decoration and colourful posts in the room. It made me feel comfortable. Our teacher professor Wolff is an old man with white beard. When I came in,he was scolding my classmate for not bring her book..He asked her to buy a book immediately. At first sight ,you may think he was a weird strict old man but indeed funny and responsible. He told us some stories about his successful sons and his family. He told us it was wrong to master English. He wanted us to be responsible and self-confident. After a few minutes ,the room was full of laugher. I am looking forward to next holistic English class.

  • Kaye class02

Before attending this class, I’ve heard of the teacher’s harshness and I’m a little bit worried about it. Because I’m a shy girl, I’m afraid to speak English before other people. First day in this class, actually, made me feel its difference from the traditional English class. Our teacher is so strict with us, but at the same time, he is the only one I’ve met that combine fun and daily life with English study. I know it will take more time and more effort to do well in this class, but I will harvest much more.

Last Thursday,I went for my frist oral english class. When I came in the classroom,I found I was late. Then a grey-haired westerner came up,he told me that I would be there Saturday 9 am.That was impossile for me,I was just late for 3 minutes.Since then,I knew he was a strict man.
Yesterday, I went to my first oral english class again. He asked everyone whether we took our yellow textbook. And you know, you will be kick out of the classroom if you forget your textbook. It was my frist time that a teacher kick his students out only for their textbooks.
During the class,he talked a lot about his family and teaching story. He is a passionate man.He is here because it is his wish that all of us can be more successful. He bought coffee and tea for us.
I think I will like this supercalifragilisticexpiadocious man.

  • lizzy-class02

Well, nice classroom I would say, lively plants on desks, vivid sentences on the wall, most of them are eye-catching. What most impressed me are the stories Professor Martin shared with us, it seems Martin has lots of experiences in China, especially about English teaching and he must be proud of his students mentioned in his stories. As is evident, Martin tries to help his students with many things except oral English and feels confused by many things such as his so-called “Chinese so-so attitude” or ways in which some Chinese deal with things. Well, I think it’s difficult to judge whether an attitude is right or wrong since we know people own different creeds and culture and it is just OK to do things in various ways. It is true there are so many problems that affect efficiency and quality but it is unreasonable to blame Chinese attitude or alike, many causations lead to an outcome and if we just put two together and make a relation we just likely miss to find a true real cause. Er…this just Oral English class, maybe I am too far away, anyway, I like this class and appreciate Mr. Wolf’s class~ (sorry, over 100 words, but forgive me.. )

  • Jack.class17

Firstly, I must say sorry to dear professor Martin for this overdue assignment, because I have just get and read the email. I did not have a change on line and open my email these days. Please forgive me. And this is my first oral English class experience:
Frankly speaking,it is my first experience that a foreigner teach me oral English, and it is a wonderful class. Professor Martin told lots of things of him and his student. I still remember his deep eyes when he was speaking. And I was shocked and moved. I got to know that professor Martin is a strict teacher but he love his students and his career so much. Furthermore, we all get a red cap which writes “Speak English”, and it is the present from professor Martin. In a word I feel nervous , excited and happy in this unique oral English class. A wonderful class, a wonderful teacher.

  • Mark class 16

It was a special day. I totally like the special arrangement of room. I enjoy the stories Mr. Wolff shared with us. The way he given us class is of especial interest to me. It just like what I had heard and was extremely different Frankly speaking, I have some apprehensions of my poor oral English. Now, I feel much encouraged to practice my English. I think it is a great chance. In a word, I relish with the special lesson.

  • Lucy-classO2

I was kicked out of the classroom, last Thursday! It is unbelievable for me! From that time, I knew, I came across a strict teacher, Martin. He told me my first class was rescheduled at Saturday 9 am. I was in shock, and I told myself, from then on, everything must be careful!
Last day, I got up early and double-double-double checked my bag whether there is the yellow book. I made sure everything is OK, and arrived at classroom 8:40 am. Frankly, I love the classroom, but I felt a little nervous from Martin. While, after his talk about his life, his family and his teaching, I found he is a passionate and admirable man. With such a supercalifragilisticexpiadocious teacher, I believe I can be a supercalifragilisticexpiadocious student.

  • Henry Class O2

Is it the HEL? I have to say, ‘Yes, man! It is!’. It’s a totally different oral English class for most of the Chinese students. Nobody can just sit and listen to some of the stories or chat with his/her friend through the whole class. Because, it is the HEL, man. But I don’t care, actually I’ve been in another oral English class which also has an strict foreign teacher, Raza. I think Martin should make friends with Raza, they two are very alike. And actually I have heard some of Raza’s students have been kicked out of the classroom, too. But whatever, I think someone’s English can have a real improve in these classes and I’m looking forward a progress in this semester.

  • Jack class 02

With a shaking heart,I came in the “holistic english lab”.(Scared me—-Why not classroom!)Facing with a foreign teacher,I was so afraid to make mistakes to lose my face.Because my English is poor, and I have no confidence in speaking. At first,I thought Martin Wolff was very strict. Then he became nice when he said he bought the tea , coffee and hat, also built the “lab”for us.For this,he must pay a lot of time and money. So he was not that bad!In fact I was mostly shock by the rules——we should always wear the red hat in the campuse;we should answer the phone in English. But I think he is right. We are graduated student, not kindergarteners. And today I answered many calls with Hello, I think it is interesting. So do my friends.I have never met a teacher like him,he is the most responsible teacher in the college. But he had better learn something more about Chinese custom. At the first day he give me a lot,I will think about what he said.

On Thursday, I had no yellow book and was out by Dr. Martin. Until yesterday I had the first class. That was so impossile for me. Since then,I knew he was a strict man. Dr. Martin gave everyone a red hat and required us to write down an English name, which surprised me so much. Even this was amazing, I found the oral English course was intersting and very different. During the class, I realized that Dr. Martin was a humorous, earnest and excellent man. It is my honour to have such a teacher. I believe a great progress would be made.

When I first came into HEL, I just felt that I liked this classroom. It’s comfortable to sit around the desk. One the wall there were many logos which were all meaningful and made us reflect on ourselves. Then I noticed Martin who looked very nice. On the contrary, at the beginning of the class he behaved as a strict Martin. However, after his instructions about this class, he turned out to be a kindly and humorous Martin. We all enjoyed his speech. I’m sure my oral English will be improved in his class.

  • Ben Class02

I was surprised when I entered to the Holistic English Lab yesterday, The pattern of the classroom was different from previous classroom. My curiosity was aroused, and I greatly expected that the course began. The foreign teacher-porfessor Martin is a very genial and humourous person, he told us many stories about him and his family in the class, and brought happiness to us, we had a good time. I believed that I would make a great progress in oral English. I am looking forward to the next class. It was worth mentioning that we all got a hat, Thank you! porfessor Martin.

  • smith_class02

The first day of our holistic english is excellent:Mr Martin is a particular man ,the way of teaching and the arrangement of room and the exaggerated expression, all of these impressed me!He also introduced us a lot of method of learnning enlish such as using english engine, watching english movies, read ChinaDaily and Guangzhou Morning Daily, trying to chat to classmate in english when surfing the internet.Beside these,I think to attention the english words in my daily life is also very important, the waiting room ,the park ,the cosmetic etc.we can see english words everywhere,we should pay attention to them.Finaly,I want to say I love the feeling of the class of holistic english.

  • Newman class 02

When I enter the classroom, Martin smiled to me, and said: “what a lucky man.” Then he sent me to a seat which is surrounded with all girls. This makes me a little nervous, because my speaking English is not so good, and I was afraid that I would make mistakes. But he said to us: “In this classroom, no one is right, and no one is wrong.” Then, he told us many funny stories, which I think were encouraging us to learn English well, to learn Holistic English. I enjoy this idea very much. According to what he said, to learn a Holistic English, we must speak in English, write in English, think in English, and even eat English, drink English, dream in English, etc. That is so exciting.

  • Lucy Class O2

Seeing the poster on the door on which there was ‘Holistic English Lab’, I could not stop laughing. Let me tell you why. We have been in school since we were five or six years old, which implies we are skilled at passing all kinds of exams without actually taking in the knowledge. And suddenly, there comes a naive teacher who uses his heart to prepare for his classes. I felt pity for this teacher’s hard work at that moment because very few would take it seriously.
However, my view totally changed after the first class. The teacher, a Father-Christmas-like American, is the most devoted teacher I have ever seen in my entire life. Even a foreigner could work so hard at improving our English, and I can’t see any reason why we do not endeavor ourselves.

  • alex_class02

What expressed me most was that I was kicked out only because that I didn’t have a textbook of myself. I learned from the lecture that a man should be responsible for himself and serious about what he do. I learned that you are responsible, punctual and strict, also warm-hearted and humorous. We should learn from you much about this However, we Chinese students were taught all the time that we should be patriotic and obedient. So we actually ignore so much other virtues. The education we get from child to now make us of today. Certainly we should learn from your western culture ,but at the same time please you try to understand our culture from our side. Maybe you will discover much thing is understandable not unbelievable

  • ryan_class02

The first sight when I saw Dr. Martin made me feel something different from others, especially his loud vioce and his strict words. Unfortunately I was punished by his differences, for I haven’t bought the Holistic English book yet, which is of significant importantces. Thirty minutes had been wasted on making up for my negligence. Howerver,I was thrown into boiling water again. I didn’t eneter into the classroom and just wandered outside. Maybe, I could have the entrance and said sorry to Dr. Martin. Howerever, the foreign man who had completely different culture from us made me upset and have no simple choice.
To my surprise, Saturday’s experience made me feel lucky to have such a genial and strict guy. Dr. Martin had the control of whole class, made all of us immersed in his differences.

  • Tim Class O2

When I first came into the HEL class, I saw it neat and gentle, with so many invigorative words on the wall. That was a good place for us to study holistic English. Professor Martin was a strict teacher. He asked all of us to follow his instruction unconditionally and be self-confidence, unless we didn’t want to study holistic English well. However, he was also a funny man. He told us the way how to become a responsible man. Although I didn’t totally agree with all what he said, I agreed that man should have responsibility. Man shouldn’t say “so-so” to his life, otherwise he will never success. “Whenever you are asked if you can do a job, tell’ em, ‘Certainly, I can!’ Then get busy and find out how to do it.” So from now on, I will work hard and try my best to be more confident and responsible at the end of the semester.

  • Terry class02

Actually, I have been shock when my classmates had to got out of the classroom, because they were late for the class or had no books. I felt nervous and at first. In our English class of high school, someone is ok after he(she) say sorry for late. Someone is ok if he(she) can take the book the next class. But now, an old foreign teacher teach us that it is not ok at all. He said that, come to this class in China, especially in the most famous university we should not perform a kindergarten behavior. I think this role is reasonable. Because we are pg, not kindergarten. Dr Wolff is strict, very strict. But he can teach us well. He teach us not only how to learn English, but also how to be a good learner. I expect the next interesting class.

  • Andy classO2

To be frank, I was enjoyed myself in the first class, it was completely different from any English class I have ever have. When I first saw Professor Martin, I told myself:”it seems that he is a nice old man, we will be good.” Well, it turns out that I was totally wrong. I didn’t mean that he was not a nice man, in fact, I thought he was very nice to us. But if you want to get a good score in his class, you must try your best. It is going to be a funny and exciting semester. I’m looking forward to it.

  • KAM@CLASS02

The first oral English class of my pgs semester, which made its debut by a red banner written “Welcome to Chingland”, is completely different from my previous English classes. What impressed me most was Professor Martin’s method of introduction, which I think may be too drastic for a beginner. However, seeing classmates leave the classroom because of their unpreparedness of this class, I suddenly got aware of that I am a pgs now, so I have to prepare as many things as possible for the future and take my own responsibility. I still can well remember the actor’s line in the movie “Spiderman 1”, which goes as “With the great power, comes the great responsibility.” As a pgs, no matter to the country or to my own, we have already had our responsibility. All in all, this professor, though for our own good, is not as easy going as the former English teachers I have ever met.

My Impression of My First Holistic English Class

As a Chinese student, Chinese is our mother language. During the past years of my life and study, English is spoken and taught by Chinese. But now I am so lucky that I have the chance to learn authentic American English from Professor Wolff, a teacher from the USA.

After attending the first Holistic English class, my feeling is incredible. Professor Wolff is a strict teacher, even a little harsh; but he is fairly warm-hearted and enthusiastic. Maybe I was the first lucky student benefited from him. I am a timid boy, which was found by Professor Wolff at glance. When he found me so nervous that my arms kept trembling, he amiably played games with me, which relaxed me quite a lot. He kindly consoled and encouraged me to me at home. Thus, I thought him just like my kingly father.

When he told us he has such a large family with nine sons and a daughter, I really admired his capability. Although he is an elderly, he is fairly energetic and enthusiastic. So, with such a good teacher, There is no reason for me do not make efforts to improve my poor spoken English.

  • John-Class one

I have never heard of ‘chinglish’ before i came to the HOLISTIC ENGLISH LAB. I just don’t know what does ‘chinglish’ mean. But now, I know it means the kind of English belongs to china only. As we all know our English teachers teach us to pronounce as foreigners do and tell us English gram is very important. I don’t think so, language is used to communicate with each other, not just to speak ‘good English’. If we can understand what people say, and others can also understand us, that’s ok. Pronunciation isn’t the most important thing.
Professor Martin is very different from my previous English teachers. He said he don’t come to ‘teach’ us English, he just help us achieve English .I believe that is just what our students need.

My oral English begins at 4:15pm.There is a long distance from my dormitory to the holistic lab. So I go to the lab early from my dormitory. I have learned from other students that my Marin was very strict. I take this guess to the lab. Mr. Martin is a little fat old man with a long beard. At the beginning, indeed, very loudly said “speaking English, this is an English class”. In the following, he told us his something about his family, he is very excellent father. Then, he took an example of his student, I know that we can get some enlightenment and help with my English studying. He emphasized that English studying must be in friendly and English environment. He try his best to supply the environment and help us with learning English. I express my appreciation to him, my dear professor, in heart. Although there is some difficulty in English, I believe that I can learn well with his help and my diligence.

As I had not been my 4th floor oral English classroom,I thought that it maybe the best and the last chance for me to improve my oral English. Because I would hardly have a foreign teacher to teacher me for a long time in the futher, also for I had never experience before. When I approached the classroom ,I saw my lovely teacher whose name is Martin. As the first sight ,I have a sensation that if my teacher wear Santa’s clothes,he will be Santa Claus. I figured that he would kindly as Santa Claus which was proved wrong later. He is a very stick teacher that we have to obey many rules and regulation in his class. At that point,I realy feel sorry for myself .
As time goes by,I found Martin is humorous and he is making his best to teacher us not only oral English but also how to be a better man . At the same time I confirmed my guess before that my teacher is a lovely man because I found all the time, he is gently stroking his luxuriant beard.
When he said the class was over , I began to look forward to the next course.

When I came to the classroom without taking my book,I was sent back to get it.Then I realized that the foreign English teacher must be too sticky, and that maybe we would have a long way to go with this class.Oh,it was terrible! However, the class delayed to that evening changed my opinion. Not sticky but serious was the teacher! We were told that we were not in a kindergarten, and we must be responsible. That’s true.In the easeful study environment,I have failed to take my responsibility in hand. As a graduate student, one applied to do contributions to the development of science,I must pay attention to my words and deeds,be serious and conscientious!

I’m sorry, Martin. I was absent from your first class because my tutor and me went to participate in an academic conference in Maoming City. I beg for your forgiveness.
When I came back, I got information from classmates. After looking through this web site, I learn more. You supersede the traditional “talk and chalk” teaching method and bring us a conversation-based English acquisition experience. That is a great innovation! Most classmates think you are strict but kind. In my opinion, you are not only a teacher but also our guide because you teach us to think and behave what a post-graduate student should do.

When I came to the classroom, I was a little nervous.Because I was afraid of my poor oral English and listening comprehensive. But when the professor Martin began to speak to us, I felt oral English was not so difficult as I thought.I can understand his words, maybe he use some gesture and tone to help us understand. In the class, I can learn more easy without pressure.Professor Martin, you give me more confidence to learn English better after the first class.
