First Day Student Culture Shock

The beginning of any new academic semester is fraught with inevitable required adjustments. The post-graduate students (pgs) are no exception. They are required to take one semester of oral English with a foreign teacher. Most pgs have had prior undergraduate experiences with this inconsequential course where the grade does not count and more often than not, the foreign teacher has a guitar and only knows how to teach English songs. The pgs have a very strong preconceived idea of what to expect from their oral English class.

As the pgs approach their 4th floor oral English classroom they are confronted by a 200 cm x 200 cm banner.

chingland 2 First Day Student Culture Shock

They have no idea what “Chingland” means and “Chinglish Spoken Here” goes directly against and is directly opposed to their prior teaching that Chinglish is no good. This is the pgs first indication that something may be different.

As they approach the classroom door they look puzzled and double check the room number.

As the pgs open the door, their jaws drop, they freeze in position and get a “deer in the headlights” look. Again, they double check the assigned classroom number.

As they slowly enter the room there is a Chinese buzz. The foreign teacher actually looks like a real professor.  The professor loudly announces, “This is an English class and this is an English classroom. Why am I hearing Chinese? If you want to practice your Chinese leave.”

A hush falls over the room. The pgs ask permission to be seated. The professor advises that those pgs who have brought their books and a writing utensil may be seated. All others must leave and never return unprepared again. Those who did not bring their books or writing utensils are told to leave but they remain frozen in time and space. The professor explains that coming to a pg class at China’s #8 most famous university is intolerable kindergarten behavior and the guilty students are ordered to leave.

Sometimes an entire first class must be cancelled and rescheduled at a punitive time.

On the very first day of the semester the professor draws the line in the sand and demands that the pgs act like mature, responsible, serious students or get out. They have never had such an experience in their prior 16 years of education. They are in shock!

Fortunately, the professor knows how to bring the pgs out of shock and within minutes the classroom is filled with laughter as everyone settles down to begin their semester of fun with English acquisition.

Culture shock? It may come true if I was still in the junior school.
Actually, I once had a foreign teacher of this type, if Chinese were spoken in his class, then we were in trouble. We should arrived on time, paid attention to what he said, finished the assignments before the dead line. Anyone who had failed his requirement would had a private talk with him, I promise you there would be definitely no happy ending.
One thing these two foreign teachers have in common is that those who perform excellently in the final examination would get award not from the school but from the teacher personal.
There is a whole semester left for us to get along with the man with a turtle on his back, and I shall enjoy the coffee there.

Several days ago, culture shock, the phenomenon which I read in newspapers and magazines was happened to me. When I went to my oral English class, I was really shocked by what I saw in the class. The classroom is extremely different from the traditional Chinese classroom. The foreign English teacher is extremely different from our Chinese teacher too. He said he is very strict, even harsh. What he said made me nervous, because my oral English is not very well. But what he said also gave me confidence, since I knew no pain on gain. Two years ago, I also had a oral English class. However, that oral English teacher is a Chinese. In his class, all students felt relax, because that teacher allowed the students to speak Chinese. So when the class was over, we got nothing.
In a word, I believe this different teacher can give me a different change.

My first oral English class was in the afternoon. When I got to the classroom building,I did not see any student around.I thought I was going to be late for class. In fact, I wasnot late. The classroom door was closed . I am very nervous , but , when I opened the door , The things inside surprised me . The classroom is different from the classrooms which I study usually . Many English mottoes hang in the wall here and there . A foreign teacher sat by the first desk with friendly smile on her face . He named Martin Wolff, J.D.The class stared , teacher forbiden us to say chinese in this room , He tell us more about himself and English ,The class turned out to be interesting . Then , The teacher wanted to know everyone’s English name , however , I havenot get a English name , the teacher gave me one , named Amber , and he explain “Amber” meaning for me . I like the name , I am Amber . The rest of the class , the teacher emphasized the useful and important of English in humourous tone , classroom is filled with laughter all time . This class may be ok!

When I first came to the classroom, I really felt supervised, because it was so funny. It looks like my kindergarten, it also recalls the memory of my childhood. The classroom of my kindergarten was so lovely, many cartoon characters were drawn by us in the wall. We didn’t have to sit in row but sit around. It can make a relaxing and comfortable atmosphere.
So when I came to the Holistic English Lab, I felt exciting rather than shocking. I think this arrangement will help us release the pressure. As we all know, the most barrier to our oral English is tension. Some teachers always tell us “take it easy”, but they never try to find the cause which incurred the tension. I like this classroom, it shows that Pro. Martin pay attention to these details, he really knows us and can help us indeed. So I hope we all make progress in this lovely classroom.

  • Martin Class16C

    Nice pictures.
(Why these comments are so long, even more than 100 words.)
As Martin is my first English teacher from other countries, I felt something different. But I don’t think there is anything like culture shock, just an ordinary teacher, a place for us to practice English .

  • Susan Class 9C

The first oral English class of this semester was really a magical experience. I have never thought English class could be like this. It was so stimulative and funny that I was unable to calm down after class for quite a while. The professor said he was a strict and harsh teacher. I prefer to say he is more responsible than any other English teacher I have met in university. All his strict demands to us are good for our growth. Maybe he seems to be a little too rigid, but he just teaches us to be a mature and responsible adult in his special way. I believe he knows what is the best method for Chinese student and put it into practice without hesitation, although which always leads to a misunderstanding of him. When he said “you are the reason why I am here”, I was indeed moved. I have no doubt that the oral English classes of this semester will be full of great fun.

  • Alice Class 12C

It was really a special day for me. Actually, I have stopped learning English for about one and a half years. While the oral English atmosphere was attractive, the most impressive were the two experiences I came across that day. The first one is about “Prepare yourself well before a new course”. I made little preparation for it when I showed up at this class and the professor insisted that students those came in without the book and writing utensil should not be here. I got the point that making full preparation was a good habit and would be helpful for your whole life. Another interesting thing was that I was named Alice by the professor since “piggy” was not a formal name according to him. However, it was not bad because I like Beethoven and his famous song-“To Alice”.

  • Cidney Class 3C

I didn’t know there are classrooms like these before, even though I have been studied in SYSU for more than 4 years. The atmosphere is so different from common classrooms in other buildings. I really feel encouraged by the highlighted slogan on the wall, the read caps and the flowers. It is a new attempt for English teaching in SYSU. However, this is not culture shock for me cause I have attended classes like this when I was in high school.

  • Berry Class2C

I undoubtedly got a culture shock when i entered the “Chingland” for the first time, and i had never imagined that we can be encouraged to speak chinglish, especially the fact that a foreigner asked us to do so.but it also impressed me a lot.i had the feeling that he can make things different and that i can make a qualitative change in this semester if i follow him to study English.

  • Peter Class 3C

Frankly speaking,it’s the first time for me to have such experience.I was shaked by the classromm. and can’t help speaking English in the environment. My English will be better if I study in such classromm since junior middle school. The method should be spreaded to junior and senior middle shool.I believe there will be less people who can’t dare to speak one word after ten years’english study if such room come into their lives earlier.
We should keep the passion and the exiciting atmospher for a long period.Oral practice for English is full of happiness ,therefore progress in spoken language will be great.

  • Bonnie Class 10C

This new kind of English teaching was very interesting which I never have experienced before. In the beginning of the class, all folks were quiet because we didn’t know what would happen next. The teacher looked very friendly and he told us a lot. We learned many things from the teacher. We talked in English and began to know the importance of mastering English. The teacher always told us English was money. We really considered that English would do good for our future.

  • Delta Class 11C

Last Tuesday, when I came to my oral English classroom, I was really shocked. When I opened the door, I couldn’t believe it was our classroom, so I doubled and checked the assigned classroom number. Yes, it was right. So I harbored uneasy feelings into the classroom. Things that caught my eyes were the pot of beautiful flowers on the table, and many inspirational banners were posted on the wall. It was so different from others’ classroom that I considered it as a party room. There was also a foreign professor, like Santa Claus, sitting in a corner of the classroom. Maybe it was a special course. Mr. Martin, our professor, was a humorous but strict teacher. All of us were not allowed to speak Chinese in his classroom. And we should spend much time on learning English. His demands were helpful for us to improve our English level. Sometimes, we needed some pressure to do something only serious. So I was lucky to have such a foreign professor to be my English teacher. And I would try my best to learn English.

  • karlson Class 10C

The so-called “Culture shock” is relative and different from people.
Just half year ago,I worked in FLTC as a assistant,I made a mistake to messm up “Holistic English Lab” with an office. Then i entred the classroom. On that time ,Martin was check the homework, and be a little angry about the stundent wo write badly. Then I thought “This old fat man is so strict,I don’t want to be his student”.but now i am indeed a student of Martin.Maybe, this is my greatest shock i meet in this semester ,this classroom.
Just a joke, wish you won’t mind it,Martin.Although you will never allow your student to treat english as a joke,so did’t I.
I just want to say,I did not shocked in your,no ours, classroom in which we will have fun, learn english and do much more.
    Thank you,Martin.

  • Stella Class 10C

Although I’ve learned English for more than ten years, Mr wolff is my first teacher from English speaking country. He really showed me something different in his teaching. What impressed me most the first day I came to his class is the sentences on the banner outside the classroom, “WELCOME TO CHINGLAND. CHINGLISH SPOKEN HERE”, just as the first picture shows above in the article. Chinglish? In my memory, this word was used as a critical comment on the English spoken by Chinese people which is not pure enough. But Mr Wolff told us that Speaking Chinglish was good. That sounded unbelievable. But I thought I could understand what he meant. Just as what he said at the lecture last Friday, there were no standard English in the world, even in the USA or in Britain. So it is not necessary to worry too much that your English is not so pure. Just speak out boldly and you will make some progress in your practice. So, I think I will follow the indication given by Mr Wolff and speak more Chinglish no matter in class or in my daily life.

  • vera Class 16 C

I would say that it is a favorable style for us in English study with a passionate teacher and kind classmates. Always bear in mind that eat, sleep, drink and even dream in English, definitely right and effective in English learning. We do must immerse ourselves in English as the teacher advocated. Enjoy the class!

  • Michell Class 12C

I was very surprised when I entered the classroom,as I have never seen a classroom like this before. There are many English mottoes hang in the wall here and there ,and the atmosphere of freedom is very heave .When we begin our class, what the teacher said made me nervous, because my oral English is not very well, and I felt that martin is strict with us.But what he said made me very confidence, since I knew no pain on gain.I Believe my oral English will be improved a lot in this environment.

  • Shirley Class 16C

The holistic English class did give me some kind of shock on my first attendance last week. However, I feel much more pleasant surprise since the classroom is so different from the ones we have ever seen before. It’s like we are holding a big party and any free civilized speeches and communications may be welcomed here. I do love the atmosphere! Besides, I haven’t been taught by foreign teachers before. So, all in all, I feel strong fresh enthusiasm in my heart and the courage to learn English better!

  • Matt Class2C

Shock? Surprise? Yeah! I`m really surprised!
It`s not a happy thing to come into campus after a long vacation in home. But on the first afternoon of this semester, I got a surprise from a foreign English teacher. I`m surprise for what has been pasted on the wall and the door, I`m surprised for a foreign teacher like “Santa Claus”, I`m surprised for signs put on the wall, there is even coffee, English coffee of course. The really surprised thing is what the teacher, Professor Martin, said. “This is not kindergarten!” “people without workbook, get out!” I rarely see a teacher so direct like him. For a late student, the teacher said, “Good evening”. Ha! A strict but also humorous man. “I am a strict father, even harsh, and I am a strict teacher, even harsh”. Is this a claim before war?
I`m surprised but also happy, because I have made up my mind to study English well this semester. You know, I even signed up the TOEFL test. But on the morning another teacher told us, “you have studied English for more than ten years, what improve can you make in coming three months”. What? This is the only semester to study English during my postgraduate period. Am I going to give up it? However, the afternoon teacher, Professor Martin, gives me promise. “your English will be better!”

  • Ivy Class 6C

To be frankly, the rules printed on our textbook really shocked me. In my school life, the foreign oral English teachers are always energetic and ruleless. But this time things have changed. Professor Martin was so different. His indisputable words made us a little perplexed. Fortunately, all of us were qualified to stay in the classroom without awkward banishment. For the rest of the first class, we students didn’t talk much. But listening to Martin was also big fun. Basically, we had a good time there.
Back to the dorm, I thought a lot. Are those rules really too strict to us? Certainly not. If we had a Chinese-teaching class, the rules probably sound reasonable or even we might never give a damn about that. Maybe we’v just paid too much attention on the differences between NATIVE and FOREIGN CULTURES. Nothing can be achieved without rules and order, as the saying goes. One has to pay to get. Besides, the rules are exactly what everyone should obey since his first day in school, aren’t they? By the way, I like our small but comfortable classroom!

  • Grace Class12C

After reading this article,I recalled all the things that happened in our first oral English class.Yes,I didn’t experience such class. To be honest,I was shocked by the teacher. The wall aroud the classroom were covered by many English proverbs. Each of them was useful for us.And I also shocked by the teacher’s idea that one should prepare adequately before you starting a job as well as a class. It inspired us to be a prepared person or one would not success.

  • Cecilia Class 8C

I was scared when I entered the classroom for the first time, not only the decorates in the classroom, but the special professor, strictly and particularly.Honestly speaking,I was shocked, very much.
After a nervous class,I felt so relaxed, just because I return to my world, rather than the new English world the professor brings to us.
My English is poor, It makes me self-abased,sometimes.so ,I think I need a long time to catch up with my classmates,so that I can get used to my new English world to which Mr. Martin takes .

  • Selina Class10C

At the first day of my new academic semester, I was very curious about the oral English lessons. After the Japanese learning, we tied our best to reach the holistic English classroom on time. Because it is said our teacher is strict and being late is not allowed. Frankly, the classroom is quite different, just like a chatting room. However, I did not speak any English in my first class.

  • John Class 3C

Frankly speaking, I really got a culture shock at the first class of Mr. Wolff. There are so many different things in this class. For example, we should take our “tickets” to the class, and we are allowed to speaking English only. But I think it is the most important that Mr. Wolff let me know that we should not and can not master English, and we learn English mainly to communicate with others. So if we can make us understandable by speaking Chinglish, Chinglish is just OK.

  • Joe Class 10C

When I got the English book, I was a little surprised. It was so different that I was curious about how the teacher would say. The time I stepped in the classroom, I was shocked by the layout of it..It is more like a conference room than a classroom. I never have a class like this before, and I’m very happy that I’ll have a special course in this semester.

  • Vincent Class 4C

Chinese are never ever allowed, but Chinglish will be forgiven which means you can make mistakes in class. I think this is a good way to encourage students. The class room decorated in bright colors is suffused with ravishing beauty, which makes a positive phenomenon. The students are told to be active and just have fun in class. Face problem is not worth worrying about.

  • Ivan Class 4C

Before I began my first oral English class, I had heard something about Professor Martin. So with no curiosity, I rushed to the classroom building that afternoon. But the decoration of the classroom still gave me a little surprise. What I saw was just as the article describes. I think Professor Martin should prepare for this for a long time. The message that he wanted to send was very clear, in my opinion. No matter whether we like English or not, we have to learn it well, because it’s very important. But how can I freely communicate with others in English in a comfortable way as in Chinese? It can’t happen without lots of practices and a good English learning environment. I will try my best to get used to the English world created by Professor Martin and I really hope I can improve my English in this semester.

  • Darren Class 8C

I listen to the BBC programme “better speaking” several days ago.In the programme, the teacher encourage students. He told the students never be afaid of making mistakes. He praised the students as good communicators, even though they made mistakes. The programme try to make us known that communication is the most important thing and students should not just focus on vocabulary and grammar.

  • Rachael Class 9C

I haven’t took the English-book for almost two years .My English is POOR now. However, when I entered the holistic English room, I didn’t feel any culture shock.” Martin’s coat is funny. And the classroom just like a kindergarten.” Watching the tableau vivant of the classroom, we feel free from any psychological burden. I like the teaching style to a very great extent, even sometimes I still can’t catch up what the professor said. But I will try my best to listen more and to understand more.

  • Emily 11C

Well,to be honest,I was shocked when i entered into the classroom. The environment is very good. It donot like any other classroom in China. The desks, fowers, coffee, tea , english slogans and so on.Everything are comfortabale. We enjoy learning in it!

  • Tracy Class 1C

I was shocked when entering the Holistic English lab last Monday. The classroom is quite different from the one I saw before. The desks are not placed by one by one, which is for convenience for our communication in class. There is also a seat among our seats for Mr. Wolff. The wall is filled with the signs and the flowers are placed on the desk, which make me feel relaxed in the class.
It’s the first time I see a foreign teacher like Santa Clause. I remember that the teacher emphasized that he’s not Santa Clause During the introduction. however, just feel he is a kind man like Santa Clause. Maybe if we do well in class, he will give us a gift as award, just like Santa Clause. Mr. Wolff forbid us to speak Chinese but Chinglish. He told us that spoken English was a tool for communication with other people. Before that, I was taught the Chinglish is not good. I always feel shy to speak English because of bad spoken English. Finally, I got nothing after English class. When I come across something that I can’t express in qualified spoken English, I feel nervous and become even shyer. I think the forbiddance will help me speak English more confidently .
Thank you, Mr. Wolff. I like the ornament of the lab and enjoy my holistic English.

  • Doris Class 4C

What is culture shock? In my understanding, culture shock means there are great differences between two different cultures.
In most Chinese classes, students just sit formally and listen. The classroom is always with little decoration.
But when I entered the oral English classroom for the first time, I was really surprised. The classroom is decorated to be so colorful and beautiful. The arrangement of desks and chairs is quite different from the usual. It is easy for classmates to communicate with each other. Thanks for Professor Martin.
The teaching style of Professor Martin is also different from many Chinese teachers. He told us some rules, for example, never be late for class, etc. Though he seems to be a bit strict with us, I do believe that it is good for us. Those rules are definitely necessary and important not only in the class but also in other occasions in our daily life. We postgraduates are already adults and we should be responsible for our behavior and speech.
Besides, in Professor Martin’s class, Chinglish is allowed. I really shocked when I heard this. Other English teachers often tell us that Chinglish should be avoided and we should speak more natively. In this respect, Professor Martin has given us a lot more freedom in his class.
I hope I can enjoy a good cross-cultural journey in this class.

  • Susan

Frankly speaking, I do not feel shocking when I entered the classroom on the first day because I have took similar courses taught by foreign teachers. But still, I enjoy the fresh style of the classroom, which makes us surrounded in an English-speaking atmosphere.
Another point I appreciate of this course is that it never allow students to speak Chinese during the class. Though cruel it looks , it is really important. The reason why Chinese students can not speak English fluently is that they do not obtain English-speaking atmosphere and when speaking English, they often translate Chinese into English first.
Hopefully all the students who have chosen this course will make progress in English.

  • Frank Class 4C

When I stepped into the classroom, I was really shocked by the banner; it must take Professor Martin much time to prepare for the class. I really want to say thanks to him. To tell you the truth, I had never attended an oral English class like this style before, exactly to say, from the time I began to learn English. I will treasure this semester and take advantage of this chance to improve my oral English. Professor Martin is exactly the gardener and we are the seeds, we will grow up under his good care.

  • John Class 8C

It is my first time to hear the word “Chingland”. And you are the first teacher to tell me that Chinglish is OK. So at the beginning of the class, I felt very confused. But now I think I understand you. The attitude of speaking Chinglish encourages the students who are too shy to open mouth to participate the group discussion in English. What I want to say now is “Thank you, Martin.” I love your way of teaching.

  • Jane Class 2C

What a comfortable English room! This is what I had never seen before, so when I open the door, I immediately feel very surprised and excited .Such an place is suitable for learning English.
It is known to all that language comes from life, and language teaching should also be more close to life. In the classroom as much as possible for students to create simulations of life scenarios, so that we can experience the immersive scenarios to use the language.
Therefore, students also have a great impact on the classroom environment. The rich, vivid and funny class is not only like the “paradise” but also like the lovely “home” .Students in such a colorful atmosphere for learning English is a happy thing.

  • Tom Class16C

I’m surprised by Dr Martin at the first class. Nothing is similar as my previous English classes: the desk is displayed round, the English room is call Chingland, this hall is for discussion and we come here for English acquisition rather than English learning… There are so many new ideas, which show the determination of the professor to promote our English. Everything is fantastic and interesting, and I really look forward to it.

  • June Class 4C

To be honest, I did hear some rumors about Mr. M before, but when I entered the classroom I was deeply moved. It was well decorated with bright color, tidy desks and there are flowers on each of the table. Obviously the seats had been specially rearranged to make us much closer. Around us there were banners and posters encouraging us to speak English. At the back of the classroom free tea and coffee were provided. We can help ourselves during the courses, eating and drinking and laughing. What impressed me most is Martin’s emphasis that Chinglish is ok. The strict teacher was trying his best to create a soft environment for us to relax and sense the fun of English. Thanks for his consideration.

  • Nicole class 9C

This class is indeed very different from our usual. Classroom is colorful, as if it is celebrating some festival. We can not be late for class, we must complete the homework on time and take care of every detail. It is helpful for our personality and future development. But, the teacher is so tough that beyond our imagination. It will take us a little time to adpat. Hoping that teachers can understand and tolerate our honest mistake.

  • Jason Class 5C

Frankly speaking, the class give me an surprise.I have never atttend a class like these. There is a banner saying “welcome to Chingland…”hanging outside the door.Pro.wolff said we can speak Chinglish here,it is the first time I have heard, our foreigner teacher told we to speak Chinglish.Unbelievable!

When you enter into the door, you will find that there is something different with our formal classroom. This room is more a coffee bar rather than a classroom. The students are sitting around and are divided into several groups. The student can talk freely and have a tea for free.

What’s interested me most is that Pro.Wolff said he will let the student whose English is poorest of the group to present what are the discussing insteading the best guy.I’m great to hear this because my English is poor,so I will have more chance to practice my oral English.I believe this is the best way to teach Englsh.Wish that this experience can be shared with other teachers all over China.

Some people said you are extremely strict.I think so,but I know that what you are going to do is to help us to improve our English. There is an old Chinese logion saying that the strict tutor producing the outstanding students. The method to learn English is speaking, writing, reading and listening more English.

  • Johnny1 Class 3C

Frankly speaking, I feel a little afraid before I entered this classroom first time, because my oral is poor and I have a little chance to speak English with a foreigner who come from a English-speaking countries, so I’m afraid I can not understand his means completely.
when I entered the classroom, I’m surperised and existed, there is banner saying “welcome to Chingland” and so on. most of all, Pro. wolff said that this is Chinglish classroom and forbed to speaking Chinese, if you want to speaking Chinese, please leave. This is very different from our previes English classroom. So I make a dicide that I will learn it well.

  • Lynn Class 8C

When I stand outside the classroom, when I look at the banner,I feel very strange——How about inside the classroom? After I enter in the room,I really get shocked! How different the room!It does’t like as order as other classrooms. It divides the whole into several parts.Students form teams to talk, discuss and study. In the room, you are free! This teaching is new,as a pgs,I think it will be accepted by most students.

  • Vivian Class1C

Well, I am very happy we can meet you. The class gives me a great shock. The classroom is very different from the traditional Chinese classroom. Additionally, the teacher is kind. That day, I was late, I felt very sorry about that. I was very worried about teacher would blame me. However, when I came in , he didn’t blame me .Thank you. I believe we can enjoy your class every time.

  • Jassica Class 15C

Maybe shock. It was the first day I came into the Holistic English classroom, I surprised that there was a special room for this course, though it’s a little small. Mr. Wolff said that therein Chinese was not allowed to speak, there was no Chinese characters also, but I can see the characters printed on bucket of water, maybe it was not into account.

  • Fiona Class 16C

Actually when I firstly entered the teaching building and saw so many foreign students around I felt a little shocked. I think it may be an effective way to build an English atmosphere and environment all around. Speak in English, think in English, and dream in English? Maybe I really should have a try!

  • Christy Class 16C

Before I took the English class this semester, I had heard about Professor Wolff. I heard about his strict rules, his unique teaching style, and so on. I admit that I was very nervous before I went to his class. Even though I prepared myself, when I got to the classroom for the oral English class, I still felt surprised, by the classroom full of banners which I never pictured, by the teaching style of Professor Wolff which I never experienced. All this is new to me, although I feel a little bit uncomfortable, I’m getting used to them. I really look forward to the oral class in the rest of the semester. And I hope I can learn to learn English in a better way at the class.

  • Sue Class 13C

When come into the classroom at the first time,I am a little surprised, the walls of the classroom are all English sentences, that’s really an entirely English-speaking environment.I believe we can get used to this quickly ,and also very confident in improving our English.

  • Sara Class12C

To be honest, I have not have class like this oral English class before. I was shocked when I entered the oral English classroom. There are many notes on the wall. Everyone is interesting. Which make me have unforgettable image is that the teacher is very strict. Before I began my oral English class, I had not got my English book. My oral English teacher was not happy to know that, so he took us to buy the book and told us that it was not allowed next time. I will remember his words and never do that again.

  • Elda Class2C

Actually, when I entered the classroom for Holistic English, I was shocked. I have never thought English class could be like this: all the desks are divided into several section of six students each, and in each group, we can face to face with each other. I have had 6 foreign teachers during my undergraduate life. Each of them have taught me a lot, not just English songs. So, I hope I can learn more from you in this semester.

  • Fion Class 1C

After reading this article, the first thing I want to do is to make an apology for my teacher because I was late for that class. It is a pity that I didn’t pay attention to the banner. However, at the moment I opened the door and asked for admission, I’m surprised by the decoration inside. The classroom is decorated as a cafeteria, and there is free tea and café for every student. It is fresh to me. I have never seen such a classroom.
The teacher was an old person, worn a red hat. He was a bit fat and he made a joke that we should not mistake him with KFC’s founder. It is funny. What’s more, he took out a clothes which was full of the label “speaking English”. It impressed me.

“Culture shock”?maybe it is ture for me.In fact ,I have heard some comments about the professor Martin, and the first class just prove wahat I have learn of about the teacher. So I came in the classroom with preparations.I was moved by the plain words “I love you anyway”.You know ,in some aspects we actually did not well. For example we did not interact with the professor .I guess that maybe we are immersing the surprise status.Anyway,we need a teacher with fresh and peculiar teaching style.Hope a happy ending!
