MUTE ENGLISH

Professor Martin Wolff

I have often said that when a teacher stops learning, they should stop teaching. I want to thank my SYSU Fall 2009 post grad students  for introducing me to a new term, “MUTE ENGLISH.” I had never heard this before and it has piqued my interest. A Google search revealed many student comments  about MUTE ENGLISH but a Google Scholar search turned up not a single scholarly paper published on the subject.

ABSTRACT

“Mute English” is a unique Chinese phenomena ignored by linguistic scholars but derided by Chinese students. It is a communicative language taught as if it were a dead language, like Latin. We explore the origins, as well as the cause and effect of this phenomenon.

we have to acknowlogy that there are too many people learning English. They are students of from kindergarten to colledge, business men from the senior executives to general stuff, country leaders from the high officialss to common service personals, but some of us can not speak English. We call that “mute English”. Why ? I think there are mainly two reasons. Firstly, not everyone that learning English truly know why they have to learn it. As to students, they may just want to got their parchments. Secondly , our English teacher can not speak English well themselves. But on the other side, if you learn English just to get information from English books, that’s OK,mute English does no matter. But in order to communicate with others, you should make great efforts to that.

Mute English is a good metaphor for our chinese students learning English. This phenomenon was common around us.As one of them,I have learned English from junior high school to university for more than ten years.Even in the future we have to keep learning. But to many of us,we do not have a good grasp of it.Is English difficult to learn, the fact is not like this.In most cases,we are learning English just to cater for a variety of tests such as CET but not to use it.When we began to talk with others in English,we found it hard to open our mouth, that’s we called “Mute English”.
But fortunately,we have begun to realize this and try to change this phenomenon,so we can believe that learning English will become more rational and practical.

After my further thought, I think CET is the main reason for mute English, for it is the ultimate goal of our country’s English educational system. So, to change the situation of today and build a new practical education, abolition the CET is the first and most important step to go. From my own experience, I have passed both CET4 and CET6, but my English dose not have a quality enhancement, because we have open sesame to pass the test but not one to improve our English. So, it is time to abolish the CET.

First I want to make it clear that I don’t think that people are too afraid of the powerful CET committee to criticize CET. The reviewer showed his or her view standing in a Chinese point of view. Maybe the reviewer knew what problems exactly exist in China. The root cause is not CET, but the education system. If the CETs were cancelled and mute English did not exist in China any longer, then the journal would be a hero in the area of English teaching. But what if it turns out that the CETs were cancelled but students English became even poorer? The most important reason is we need English as a tool to learn more others form foreign country. Above all, the reason of Mute English in China is complex; it is not a unique phenomenon under the sun!

  • Maggie class5

They didn’t publish your article doesn’t mean that everyone is too afraid of the powerful CET committee to criticize CET. The education thing in China is so complicate, for the reason that we have a large number of students and the level of teaching quanlity vary significantly. So we take exams to allocate resources. We know what happened about our education system. However, we fail to figure it out. Maybe CET is a way by which we can force most of college students to learn English. In short, I concede that CET is not the best way to learn English. Yet, under such education situation CET may influences us more or less.

Last month, I made a friend with some foreigners. I absolutely understood what mute English is. Many times, I knew what they said and their question but I cannot express myself well sometimes. So I must use body-language to let them understand what I said .Why does mute English only happen in China? First of all, English is a passport to go to the top college .when I was young I knew English is a compulsory item in each entrance examination,so many of us always try our best to learn the word by heart and look forward to get the high scores in the exam. That may be the most important reason why so many students learn English so long time but until now we are still speak mute English. Second, we do not use it to communicate with each other in our daily life. So many of us can read English paper but cannot talk with others in English .if we want to change this phenomena, we must speak more and listen more. As what martin said, English is not a subject you study a couple of hours a week….it is something you live 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

I think all the Chinese people will be sorry to hear that our English using ability is limited to “Mute English” for the money , energy and time we have put on it. I think there are many reasons to explain it and, CET4 and CET6 counts much for it. To past the tests, we Chinese students have to put almost all of our energy to the English writing and listening. We may respond well on tests, but we can’t even have a simple conversation with others in English. English is a skill more than anything, if we can’t make it work for us then why we have to wast our time learning it? It is urgen for us Chinese people think more about the system of our English learning.

“Mute English” phenomena is common in China. Since we began to study English, we focus on not listening and speaking but reading and writing. The school tests our English ability in the same way. As time goes by, we can read a lot of English material such as newspaper or even paper. However when we encounter a foreigner, we could not follow what they have said let alone express our opinion in a comprehensive way. In my opinion, we should create the English environment for ourselves. In this environment we listen and speak all the time. Then we are no longer the member of “Mute English”.

  • alexander16

I have a better understanding about English learning in China. To some extent, the CET has become a barrier to our English-acquisition owing to becoming the most important threshhold for graduates hunting for jobs, but it is not a comprehensive index which speaking practice is paid less emphasis on. In fact, if the great changes in English acquiring these years are considered ,we must admit that the CET has promoted English learning in China largly. However, as China entered the WTO and had a economic integration with the world, one’s comunication skills especially in speaking English are more needed. Therefore, many people called for the abolition of the CET, such as Martin. It is a good thing that more and more people have recognized the shortcomings of CET. But as the reviewer said, it is not reasonable that all are attributed to the CET because there exists too many factors prevented our EFL learning. As a matter of fact, it is a dangerous idea before a more effective and comprehensive English test system is builted. A sudden abolition of the CET may lead to some social unstabilities because many people will lose their jobs and students will also complain that. So, some reforms to the CET are quite feasible such as adding speaking into CET. To sum up, the CET shouldn’t be abolished at present but some reformes are quite needed.

  • ryan_class02

Mute English of course, should be given much attention, and be criticized more. If getting rid of such English, we Chinese citizen would benefit a lot from lively English, communicate with foreigners more comfortably. However, it’s not acceptable to connect MUTE ENGLISH with an exam that the person fond of English didn’t care about. This exam called CET has been focused just by these agent people calling for REFORM, and criticized by the ones whose English is trapped in difficulty and has no idea to improve his own English level.

Take our undergraduate class for example,70% of students having no prepare passed this exam at the first time. Then the next time, most of students already threw the exam away, leaving only 3 ones struggling. OK, you may imagine that the only three ones would blame this stupid exam. However, they had no sense about it, no worry about English, no improvement. What they did was recitation from classics sentences and essay.

The CET helped us a little, and we had no focus about it. It’s not fit to blame for it.

I did not know that “Mute English” is a unique Chinese phenomena before i I read this artical.I had ever believe that the phenomena of “Mute English” appears in all the countrys whose native language is not English. I do not konw what is the critical fact which induced the phenomena, but I have two approximate reasons for this problem.the first reason is that our education model is not reasonable, thatis, it pays more attention to students’ ability of reading comprehension. Most English exam do not even have the condition of checking students’ abiltiy of English speaking.the second one is that the aims of Chinese students’ learnning English are not to communicate to foreigns but to enter a famous university or pass CET-6.

  • Yes, I think the cet4 or cet6 do not help us to improve our English ability too much and it turns out the Mute English phenomenon all over China. As my cet4 and cet6 experience, the only one thing I think it helps is I has remembered lots of the English words. I think I have remembered 6000 words to prepare the cet6. I can read the long English article, but my oral English I think is not well at all and I think I become mute English. And after I learn the Holistic English, I know Chinglish is good, and I can speak English naturally. So I like the Holistic English and it does help me improve my oral English.

  • Dennis Class5

Firstly, as an English journal, the review should be written in English, can’t the editor write English?Yes,he can. Then why not in English?I ‘ve no idea.Secondly,I will talk something about CET 4 and 6.Take me as an example, luckily,I have passed CET 4 and 6.I took the CET 6 exam twice. At first time,I got 450 points. But I am not satisfied with the result. Then I took the exam again. To my surprise,I only got 360 points.Unbelievable!!!90 points differences.Only during 6 months ,have my English turned so poor? Around my classmates, this phenomenon is very normal. When someone passed the exam,we will say”you are so lucky” but not say” your English is so good”.I think CET should be reformed completely,or it will continue to hinder our English improvement and make us lose in the English study.

  • Cruz class1

Different people have different idears about CET,But I think CET is just a standard, you can’t cancel it without a replacer, because it play an important role in promoting and checking our English learning in College and University. It really make us progress, but with it a lot of unlile things happened,i think it is not the fault of the examination itself but maybe in wrong direction. It is a product of our examination-directed education system.
If we want to change, the first thing and the most important thing is our attitide,it decise others,so we should treat CET as a force to progress our english level not just a examination and a power to get a good job.If not,it means wasting our own time and lives.

  • Bob-class7

“Mutu English” mirrors a phenomone which permeats our society, that is more and more chinese students tend to learn English just by proving their writing and reading ablility , neglecting the most practice skills in utilizing English.Consquently, student become the major part of “mutu Enlish” user and then are allocated to differnt part of social field:administration, bussiness, factory, school and so on.There will be two oppsite ways as students enter the society. On the one hand,if the career that the new geneneration taken is “English needed”,they are forced to use oral English more often and enhance their “Ouput”skills. On the other hand, most people tend to abandon the English becase what they learned before is just a mothod to cover endless exams. So “Mutu Enlish” not only a hazard to college students now,but also lead a more latent threat in the future.Just as many commentments argue that language is the most important way for mutul understand and friendship between different counties. And the “output” skills ,such as speaking and listening are greatly contribute to a more effective way of communication. So I think it is the whole society’s accountablity to help students to shape a view of “Speaking out English”.Moreover our government also need to bring more chances for students and the whole society to comminicate with English.

  • eddie_class16

It is very sad that we learnt English for so many years, but what we get is just “Mute English”. It is not our faults, but the faults of the Education Part.
We learnt English in order to pass the exams. If you want to get into a good college, you should get a good mark in the exams. In the college,We have the task to pass the CET4 and CET6.We have no chance to practice our speaking English.
Now,I know how to improve my English from martin’s teaching. We can study English very well through the methods which martin taought us in the class.

  • “Mute English“ is to say people who learn English for several years , having some reading skills , but weak in or can not say or listen English very well. Although some people may have passed the CET4 or CET6 examlation, they can even not dare to speak to others in English.
Why did the phenomenon came about ? in my opinion, everyone has a different ability in learning a new language which was not his or her native language. We are Chinese who has a history of 5000 years , when we were asked to use English to communicate with each other, we always fell ashamed. Another reason, anthough China now under a fast development of economy, we still in a poor society , a lot of people are still share a bad educational environment , it is unfair , however , we don’t have enough teacher who can and volunteer to teach in the vast country region or small town. That is to say , we can not always receive a good education.
Of course , may be some other reasons for this phenomenon, for example , the wrong way of studying , misunderstanding of the use of the language, or the interest and genius of people learning English , and so on.
Then , how can we to change the situation? I think the government should invest more money to afford the education cost, making a good English learning environment, and equal education chance. On the other hand , the school and university should encourage the student to learn English ,and host many competitions for English learners, and so on.
I believe, with our efforts , we can achieve a good progress.

I think there’re some meaningful points in the editor’s response. If there’s no CET4&6, there’s no mute English any more? CET4&6 are merely exams in college targeting to value students’ English abilities which can not be acquired in just two years. We have all spent all these year before to study English. It can’ be denied that early studying plays a prominent role in how we could perform in CET. It is just like precipitation, a slow and continuous process.
Some of us students perceive the view the CET is indeed the chief criminal of mute English, while others not. I prefer the latter. It’s the direct reason but not the basic one. We are lack of ESE environment and proper teaching methodology, but all of these rooted in illness education system oriented to exams. We need to study English well so as to get passed and get higher education in college and get diploma. We lost our origin point and the most essential thing. Why have we learnt English? Because we need it, we can use it in our daily life and future for our own convenience and pleasure. It is our own business.

Except for the two ressons that most Chinese students lack of confidence and the English teachers should forgive their mistakes in English learning process I posted last time, there are other factors in the Chinese university students who are learnig the ” mute English” generally. And the first one I want to discuss today is the hearing curriculum has not received takes. A very clear example is that there is no hearing test in GRE [Graduate Record Examination].And in many universities,we have no hearing curriculums. There is only one Chinese teacher throughout the course, all we accept is his/her nonstandard Chinglish,so when we face to foreigners,it is natural that they don’t understand what we say and we cannot catch what is the foreigners meaning. The second factor for mute English is little speaking. In many universities(or schools),the English teacher will be blah-blah-blah throug the whole class and there is no time for students to practice their oral English.I think Student Presentation may is a good method to solve this problem, and students could get more chances to set up their confidence and to grasp communication skills.

  • Stella Class 1

“Mute English” is a universal phenomenon in China, although most of the citizens would have learned English for many years, from their primary school to college. There may be some reasons contribute to this phenomenon. First of all, the speaking ability is always ignored by the educations at school, even in colleges. The English language teaching in China often focus on the grammar and the words, as a result, we may have less opportunity to learn how to use it in normal life and to practice it. In addition, China is not a country of immigrants which would probably have English as their first language. Because most of the people use it for communication. However, most citizens in China speak Chinese, in a way, it is no use to speak English. In general, there are the reasons why speaking English of Chinese is improved slowly to my personal point of view.

  • Andy classO2

In some point, I think the editor is correct. “Mute English” will not disappear even if CET4 and CET6 do no longer exist. China is too big, and the difference of education situation is too big. Without the same standard teacher, the same education, “Mute English” will last for a long long time. But still, it is impolite to reject the article in Chinese.

  • Ben Class4

I think that the CET need to be reformed but not eliminated.
In the past, the CET was linked to diploma. The only purpose students learning English is to pass the exam and get the diploma. This indeed waste a lot of times, and our ability to use English has not been increased. Things have been changed now.
But the CET should not be simply canceled. When we graduate and looking for work, CET certificate is a proof of English proficiency. Employers also recognized the CET.
As a measure of English proficiency, CET should be reformed in order to become a more comprehensive test of English proficiency.

  • Henryclass18

liberty of speech is a basic right for the people. Of course, it maybe have nothing to do with it. But I do think it is not very good for the editor to do this to reject your article. I do not think the reviewer was objective but an apologist for CET. Most of students in China look the CET as a evil text to baffle our English. I also do not agree that making changes in the article will get it published in China unless the powerful CET committee disappear. I am on you professor this time. You are right. In China sometimes the true is not welcome, but one day people will give a right comments on the article.

  • Allen class15

I want to say something about CET.In China, about all the students in university need to prepare the CET .In my opinion,I do not like CET.It is only an exam.It can not decide the destiny of ourselves. If you want to study English, you can study it in many other ways.”Mute English”,I think it exist in China everywhere. So I think CET should be reformed to make a better environment to study English.

  • Sunny Class Three

Mute English? So interesting and lively phrase to describe most our English studying situation. I am confused about that why we cannot speak English fluently and exactly though we spend so much money and energy on the subject. Though learning more about my classmates who also have the problem, I figure out one of the most important factors is that we always care our face too much. We are afraid of speaking to others in English because we are afraid of making a mistake before others. We always want to show others our good quality, as grace, wisdom, and smart… actually, standing outside of ourselves and ask a question to our heart, who cares except yourself? A similar case is that a adult swimming student in the gym always acquires the skill worse and slow than a child. Why? The adults think too much, care too much, so they are not brave enough to jump into the water and swim like a fish. Maybe there are many other factors from outside, but the inside factor of ourselves is crucial and vital.

  • Robert Class14

In my humble opinion, there are two main measures to avoid the emergence of “Mute English” phenomenon. On the one hand, English learners have to make the reason why they have to learn English clear. In another word, we learn English for what. Once we got the clear goal of learning English ,we can know what we should do about English. Since our first and main goal of learning English is to communicate with each other in English.(It is also the main goal of learning any kind of language. ), we are expected to consciously create or find the chances to talk with other people in English. That is to say “reject mute English!” .On the other hand, we have to create ESE on our campus, which is just the thing professor Martin Wolff want us and our university to do .As we all know, there is no doubt that ESE plays a key role at improving the learners’ English level in many aspects .Hence, I think it is also key to avoid the phenomenon of “mute English ” ,because there must be an English Speaking Environment if we want to practicing our spoken English.

  • Helen-class16

Maybe most of us all know that the purpose which the ministry of education institute for every student to learn English is to improve our ability of listening, speaking , reading and writing. So in answer to country’s vocation, every school regards English as stuents’ required course. However how do they get the effect?Take us for example,we have learnt English for 10 years, but our oral English is very poor.Just like we are approbatory , what we got is Mute English.Look back the situation of our learning English, we find that the school only pay more attention to improve the students’ passing the exam skill. However they ignore the most purpose for English learning,it is speaking English. It is concerned about the past Education system–examination-oriented education system. Now that we have advocate education for all-round development, I also agree that the CET should be refprmed. The school should creat better environment for us to learn English. And we need to built up a belief in our heart : English is tool for communication between people and people and we learn English is to be pleased ourselves.

  • peter class1

Just as professor Wollf said most Chinese students have been teaching how to pass English examination instead of been taught how to use English. so most students, afer learning English more than ten years, still can not use English to communicate with others, can not write a message in English. From this piont, the education of English in China is a big failure. But, if we had atributed the reasons to the CET examinations. Then we will also make a big mistake. If the government cancel the CET examinations, will chinese learn English well, can they speak English fluently, can they write a mean apprehensible sentence? NO, at least I think so. If the CET examinations have been canceled, then students will have no stress, they may no longer study English, the situation will be more worse than now, at least most students can read English and understand them well nowadays. So the springhead of the English teaching and learning problems lies in the attitude of English, we can do nothing if chinese do not take English serious.

  • Terry09

They just do a good job in the exam, and after that, they forget most of what they learned. If CET is really the bane of EFL acquisition,so there should be better ways. But now, there is no another that is accepted by most Chinese. In China, we could not criticize to the CET which support by our country acutely. You know, Chinese people like the euphemistic suggestions, although sometimes the suggestions hitting the nail on head are more efficiency. We’d better improve them.

  • Vickey9

Mute English is a very serious phenomenon around us.We have been learning English for about 16 year, but our English are not very good. What’s the reason? I think the main problem lies in our unwilling to speak English out. No matter how many English magazine or books you have read, with speaking ,you can never learn English better. As speaking, listening, reading and writing are a unity one, without any one of it, we can not learn English completely. Thus we can fight out that we must try to speak more if we really want to master English.
On the other hand, our attitude towards learning English must change,as we just pay too little attention to English. I think many people have no interest in English which make their English even worse.
In my opinion, we must first make ourselves intertested in English, and then try our best to speak, read ,write and listen more English.

  • vicky class3

I pasted the CET6 in university but I think I’m also a mute English speaker today. Because I want to have a good score in exam I spend more time in reading and writing. However, in my daily life I hardly use English. I think my English isn’t very bad but when I speak I feel it very hard to express myself in English. So I want to change this situation. I try to speak to my classmate in English but they don’t answer me. And that told me it needn’t to do that, our exam don’t include oral. So I think we must change our idea about why we must learn English. We learn it because we use to communicate to foreigner but not only for great score.

  • ivanclass14

What does “Mute English” exactly come from? Why does it originate in China? I have thought about these two questions for quite a while.
In my opinion, maybe it has something to do with the Chinese culture tradition. Some of the characteristics of the Chinese culture are such as conservation, discreet. Such characteristics cause Chinese people can not speak out a foreign language frequently and loudly. Here is the origin of “Mute English”.

  • Raintain class3

Mute English maybe a special phenomenon in China. From the pupils to the post-graduate students, even to some professors, most of them can understand the words printed in papers or the sentences shown on the screen, however, they cannot catch the contents from speaking English and cannot express themselves by speaking. In order to pass the exams, students have been used to communicating with the papers, but not the people. They are always very shy and would not like to talk with others in English to promote their English ability. We have to solve this problem by making the students willing to use English in their daily life. The ways to make it are various, but the primary one in my mind should be creating a comfortable environment for stduents. Together with other methods can the problems be solved fast.

  • Jimclass14

Recently, English, as the vital foreign language in China, has been widely spread more and more in almost every field. Accordingly, speaking English, being a direct tool of communication between people, should be drawn more attentions and focused by English learners. However, a phenomenon called “Mute English” which means being poor in speaking English has existed for a extremely long time. There may be some causes leading to this phenomenon. A large number of people consider that learning English is just in order to pass the exams successfully, such as CET or normally final exams. In their viewpoints, they may think it needn’t take much time to practice speaking, for speaking English does not belong to the exams. Consequently, the environment of speaking English must be worse, using speaking English much less, hardly speaking English of communication, which may sharply result in the phenomenon. Now it is high time to change the bad situation. A mind that learning English well means being good at writing, listening, reading and speaking English should be told to English learners. Speaking English plays the most important role in communication concerning English, thus, emphasis should be placed on speaking English. To sum up, methods like paying more attentions in speaking English or practicing speaking by talking with each other may make a good difference in changing this phenomenon. As to me, I have been trying my best to learn English better, especially speaking English.

  • Louise Class 17

I think they didn’t publish your paper, because the attitude towards the English learning and teaching didn’t change. Our education officials pay more attention to the points we students got in the English proficiency tests, such as CET. Such test divided into many parts, listening, reading and writing, though, SPEAKING IS NOT INCLUDED. That may be the thing make our English MUTE ENGLISH.
Our education system must be reformed and our attitude must change, or “Mute English”will be kept on!

  • Tony_class9

The Phenomenon of Mute English is very common in china . It depend on the Chinese Education system. because the English teacher don’t Pronunciation the English very well. Most of the student also who are teached by the teacher don’t pronunciation English well. There is another reason to explain the mute English .Chinese don’t often like speak English more .I think we should construct the environment of speaking English ,there may be improve my oral English .

  • MichaelClass14

After I read this article, I decided change my oral English. I told my friend I was trying hard to learn English; he bet that I will end up with mute English. Afterwards I has been struggling to learn English, both oral and written English. However, in this journey, I met some challenges, one is my pronunciation, and another one is that there are few classmates I can talk with. There is a situation I have come across many times that when I talk to them in English, they don’t reply with passion, it really let me down. But I will always keep on my plan and never give up. With hardworking, I’ll achieve my goal step by step and prove my friend is wrong.

As we enter the 21st century, we have to know that English is very important to us everyone. English is gradually becoming an international lingua franca. There are more and more people began to learn English from an early age. However, we found that learning English for so many years, we were still very difficult to talk to foreigners. Why is this? Because we have learned is mute English, we often for our written test to learn it. We must change this thinking and behavior. Learning English, the most important thing is to be able to communicate better with the others.

  • Terry class02

MUTE English is a real phenomenon in China. It is strange that people learn a language for long time but can`t speak a word. May be the reason is a defective English speaking environment. But the most important one is the educational system. In China we learn English to pass the exam, CET for example. We learn much reading English, written English, listening English, but speaking English. In my opinion, a language is nothing but a tool for people to communicate and exchange their ideas. So speaking is the most important. Nowadays we still have no ability to change our educational system, but we can create a speaking environment by ourselves. And we will succeed if we can do that.

  • Danny-class3

When I went to university,I once tought the reading and writing skills are more important than speaking English skills, because the CET-4 and CET-6 exams would not test. But when I know more I fount that the speaking skill is the most important of all of skills. If you want others know you and understant what you say,you should have a good speaking skill. So mute English can’t help.I really want to end mute English and want to have a English Spoken Environment, but may be there is a srange circle that mute English couse lack of ESE,and lack of ESE will couse worse mute English. So who want to improve speaking English should work hard, and have more confidence.

We talk about Enghlish learning many times. We can’t ignore English.Because there are so many information are written in English. So many people are talking in English. For me,if I can use English better I can get more chance than now.I can apply better job positions, and I can apply exchance chance for my study. When I write article, paper. The lastest information are all written in English, but not Chinese.I have to get the latest information if I want to make a improvement. So it it a need for me to learn English. But some of us don’t have the right way to learn it.In my opinion learn the English in order to use but not for the cet is a better way

  • Bruce Lin.Class 2

As the old saying goes, a fox may grow gray but never good. It is so difficult for someone to change what have been established in his/her minds inveterately.
Actually, the concerned administrators should have realized the disadvantages of CET or TEM, but there are no better choice for them to carry out any test to exam the students’ English knowledge. In their mind, CET or TEM is the most suitable but not best way!
More importantly, political or other factors should be taken into consideration if the cases are related to the government, although these phenomena are changing.
Anyway, some ideas of the editor is an opportunity for us to ponder over. It does be right that our reading, writing and listening skills are relatively prior to our speaking skill, but they are not at a good level. And how much time did we put into English learning after we got the English course? In this case, CET and TEM should not be considered to be responsible for ME. There is really a long way to go to maintain the balance between English tests and solid improvement of the students’ English competency.
So, when you find someway suitable to improve your English, just do it and stick to it. The reform may be taken place from the bottom up!

I hold the same opinion as the above posts. Yes, CET test is a big problem of EFL in China, but not the biggest. CET test, just like many other English tests are designed like this because some people think the vocabulary, the grammar and the writing skill are much more important than speaking and communication. We have to change the EFL system! The editor was not afraid of the powerful CET committee to criticize CET, but did realize that it was the fault of our education system (as he mentioned in the reply). However, I think if the HE class mode take place of the traditional English class, it will be much fun with highly autonomy and self motivation.

I can not agree more with the views in this passage. We must change our concept on English study. Firstly, we learn English for communication but not aiming to be an litterateur. So just do more work on the English you will use future and keep away from ones you will never touch out of exam. Secondly, “steel sharpens steel” as we know in the second class. We can speak more with our classmates and get progress together. Thirdly, since the langue is for communication why we can not say chinglish. Most of time, English native speakers can get what we mean, and we get the purposes. That is enough. Forthly, most of people will not use it at all when they pass the exam, even when they work. So why we struggle to learning it. Just some simple English will be ok.

Mute English is a special phenomenon in China which has bound up students for about decades. We Chinese maybe good in written English but bad in spoken English or English listening. Why?
Language is a complex skill, it should be practiced not only in writing but also in listening, reading and especially speaking. What we could do is to mix them together. If we only do it just from one, then our efforts in most time is wasting. We have done so much, and not want to get little fruits. It could not be acceptable.
There are many reasons for the Mute English. One is our test system. So what we could do now is to call up for reformation and to practice English in 4 sides by ourselves.

Everybody knows English is important, because we need it to communicate with others. But sometimes I feel ridiculous. When I talk to a girl from another country in Asia, I may need to use English not another Asian language. I understand that I can’t learn every language in this world (some like the Honolulu language), actually no one can. So we must choose a language which most widely used. Because of the history we choose English (even Honolulu people speak in English!). So work hard, and learn it. Don’t give up because it’s a world wide used tool, for human’s most primacy instinct, communication.

“mute English”and”deaf English” has confused many Chinese people, but also countless Chinese people are asking: Why don’t we learn English well? Words, syntax and assignments is the usual method taked by Chinese children. Standard answers, codes of conduct is the usual teacher’s teaching method. The classroom, the children are only passive recipients of knowledge. Entering a higher schools require a proof of English proficiency certificate. Therefore, the standardized test score is not equal to English language ability .Many children stood in the “dumb English” or “deaf English” starting line.
