“Our new classroom is really great. It’s clean, comfortable and attractive. So that the classroom can stimulate learning and help build a classroom community. I prefer the U-shaped configuration in our new classroom, where everyone has a frontrow seat. We can make eye contact with every student and reach each student with easy. It’s good for us. I like the plants in our new classroom. Because the plants are an excellent way to make our classroom look more welcoming. They also improve the air quality in air-conditioned building. When I am thirsty, I can get water from the water machine. But in my opinion basic bulletin boards are not enough. I believe in a very colorful classroom with poster, photograph and other interesting things to enhance the environment, such as a small refrigerator, electric heating, TV, and a stereo system with a CD player. The special course of learning English by watching movie really helped my English skills, the major advantage of this method is that watching movie is interesting rather than others which is boring and difficult to keep. I think the specific improvement by this course include these aspects following.
First, it improves my reading as well as listening. The first time when I came to the course, I was almost puzzled by the fast spoken English with the fast going English subtitles. But after a couple of courses, I can understand the major content of the movie. Now it becomes much easier and more comfortable for me to catch onto the movie.
Second, during the discussion, I also improved my oral English. Actually during the day of discussion, we talk about anything we like not only the movie. During the discussion, we learned from each other. Many mistakes was found and then corrected during the talking.
The last and the most important is that the course built in me the English thinking. Before taking this course, the way I used English is thinking in Chinese then translate it into English, after all that process, it came out of my mouth but still with a lot of mistakes. But now it only has one process that is saying what I am thinking.
Now English is no more that bad for me, and I owe all my confidence to this special course of learning English with fun.

I like your new method of teaching English. Through your class my English has improved a lot. And the most important point is that my oral English is much more fluent than ever.
Here is my opinion about the advantages of your book:
First, I learn through watching movies, which makes me more interested and concentrated. And I can remember longer than reading ordinary textbooks.
Second, after watching the movie, I have works related to it to do which will make me more impressive. And we will discuss the movie. This is the most important part because it makes me think and express ourselves and my oral English has practiced.
Third, there is a lot of information in the movie. I can learn many professional words and expressions and the use of them. After reading your book we can have a better understanding.

Thank you for helping me with my oral English. I do not dare to say that after joining your special English class I have improved my speaking English very much, but I did learn a lot from it.
And also, thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for your fantastic movies. They shared a lot of funny things and also professional subjects to us. At the same time, watching & learning. For the movie’s part, I have something to say and must to say about what it brought to me. Meanwhile, I do hope that my experience and point of view would give you and the forthcoming students a few suggestions:
1. Scanning materials.
Before you watch the movie, it’s necessary to read the materials that you have. It can help you know the background of the movie, and you also can go on the Internet to find the data or information that helps you to get in deeper with that movie.
2. Words and phrases.
In the movie, there are so many “American” phrases and slangs that you can’t understand. After watching the movie you will know their meaning, how they are used, in what circumstance you can use it naturally. Of cause, most of them were listed in your workbook; so, it really saves you a block of time.
3. Movie discussion
I like the movies, not because the movie itself brings satisfaction, but it also helps me to improve my listening and speaking. But actually, it’s more than that. You will find it’s a quiet different thing between speaking out and just watching. During the discussion, you will find there are a lot of ideas and feelings that you got from the movie. When you open your mouth and speak out to express your own opinion and try to convince somebody, you will have absorption of other people’s viewpoints, which you didn’t realize. And finally agree to disagree.
4. Think actively
I think it’s a great help for me that I took the special English class. Seize the chance to express your unique opinion; it will bring you an unexpected surprise. So you think actively and act quickly!
5. Nervous & scary? —-NO!
As the class continues, you will find you are not afraid of speaking in public anymore, not afraid to make mistakes, not afraid to lose your valueless face, because you have grown up!
Holistic English is a good attempt to improve the English teaching and learning. It is useful for some students but useless for others，but ，at any rate, it provides a new method to learn English. I think this class tell us how to learn English，of course this is very good，however，it haven’t tell us how to make ourselves love English. So，to some students who hate English，this class could not help them much.
The English final exam is over and there have no English class anymore this term. But at this time I begin to miss Professor Martin and his class. I have to say, “Dear Professor Martin, thank you very much. You are really a good teacher, not only as an English teacher, but also a teacher on our way of life. Sometimes you are very strict to us, but I know your purpose are improving our English and nurturing our self-study abitily. I really feel that it is a great honor to become your student. From now on, I will try my best to improve my English and become a student who you will be proud of. Thank you, Professor Martin!”
First of all,I want to thank Prof. Martin.Thank you for your distinctive class which have impacted on me.In holistic english class,I began to interchange ideas in English,and think over the profound meanings behind the movies.
It’s beyond dispute that I learn from HE.Still,I have some difficulties in my oral English.As it’s mentioned that we will not afraid of speaking in public.But that’s not the case to me.I feel nervous when I talk to the others in English, even if I prepared the content before .
A term seems not enough for me to improve my oral English per se.However,I think if I stick to English acquistion,I’ll get it.
Holistic English is different. By some ways it encourages us to speak more and send us a information that getting rid of mute English is a suitable way to improve English. I have benefit from that.
I want to mention that from this class I learned something more besides English due to the topic we discussed in the class. Something I have never thought about and know before. Even though some questions are difficult to answer, I am glad to have the opportunity to participate in. thanks

After Holistic English class, I want to say “thank you” to Prof. Martin. Your class provide me a new type of method to learn English. Before the class I was very shy to speak English and lazy to practice English to have a promotion. But in the course of Holistic English class you drove me to learn English constantly and gave me much chance to practice. Then I build up confidence to speak English and use English to communicate with foreigners. So I can get more useful information by English channel. This class really help a lot. Thank you Martin!
Holistic English is special,it is useful,however,that impressed me most is the teacher,who is patient and humorous .Also he can make his class interesting and fair-sounding,maybe for his acknowledgeable strictness,most of the students learned a lot.I will never forget that during my life.
I like the discussion about movies in the class .Martin put up with some topics relative with the movie for us to discuss. It was not only benefit for our speaking English, but also inspired our way of thinking. Furthermore, I was shock by Martin`s unique insights, such as his opinions on Chinese disqualified toys.
Without the Holistic English Program, I will be continued to be afraid and lazy to acquire English. First of all, thank you for your dedication in our English studying. Honestly speaking，I have benefited a lot from HE class,especially in movie discussion. I don’t want to cheat myself. Before Oral English class, I can’t communicate with others in English, but through the previous study, I have made great progress in English. Undeniably, I did not eat, sleep, drink and dream in English , But I found that I am really fall in love with English. What’s more important, English is really useful to us, not only the study but also in future work. I believe that many students have this idea like me.Just like an old saying: No pains, no gains, so we must spend a lot of energy in English, we will be rewarded. Of course, professor Martin’s teaching methods are very helpful for us to study English. Finally, I feel very reluctant to say goodbye to HE class.
Throughout the whole semester of English lessons what a surprise you gave to me. I thank you for making me think like an adult, such as the way to solve problems appropriately, and the way we behave to consider the responsibility. Time passes away, I finally found that English is a good friend of mine; you know that’s all because of you.
As the semester would be over, we would leave the Holistic English class. Through this class , now I can speak to others in English unaffectedly, sometime fluently. My oral English is improved and all of this, to a great extent, is because of Holistic English. It is so different from our English class before. It give us to think, to talk about or to discuss films, to share world views and so on. This would become a good memory and our fortune. I must appreciate Professor Wolff ,for the endeavor he has done.
Missions impossible throughout the semester finally turn out to be interesting jobs, which help us a lot in our oral English. Once I was too shy to open my mouth to speak, even in my mother tongue Chinese. But now I can sing the song “Supercalifragilisticexpialadocious” loudly in front of my friends. I can say the tongue twister quickly and confidently. HE is more than an English course. It also helps me built my confidence.
What a precious experience I had in this course!
This semester I’ve experienced a totally new English education. Although the class time is quite short, I’ve learned more than just an English lesson. Learn more, speak more, read more, write more, I definitely agree with that. Only with frequent use,will we acquire the language. And I’m very interested in the watching movie method, so thanks Martin for providing us with such a good opportunity.
In this one semester spoken, I have learned much more English knowledge than what I learnt in a few years ago. Thinking of the previous English language learning that is simply called a boring. Although the very short term time had elapsed , the harvest is indeed something that we can never forgot, and I learned how to share with others in English, how to appreciate English movies. Now, this semester is nearing completion, I am lucky that professor Martin teach us oral English. Though he is a strict man, he teach us some useful and meaningful things. Holistic English is over, I am little confused. On the one hand，I will not worry about homework ,the crazy song or forgetting my red any more. But, on the other hand, I feel a little uncomfortable especially when I open my e-mail and find there are no mails in the inbox, because usually this time I will get a mail from Martin. Today, I received a mail from him and learn that this will be last letter, a bit sad.
So I begin to think what I got from this strict old American man, I am not very clear much progress I have made, but I really have made some progress from this class. The most important thing I get from this class is not much progress I have made ,but some different angles I look English. I am not going to be mute because of dreading Chinglish, I am not going to spend a whole day to remeber 100 words. But I begin to chat in English with my friend through QQ, I begin to find some classmates to practise my English–steel sharpens steel.

I once obsessed with American television series, which are so different, so wonderful. I once dreamed of a life that value freedom most. But it is never too late to accept my teacher′s advice: There is a smart way to watch TV. Compared with the past, the criminal rate has soared, which partly due to the television series. Literary works come from reality, but also higher than the reality. Some television series can reflect a country’s culture, but most are fictitious. We are very familiar to such words: the story is imaginary. Watch TV is like finding friends, good friends is an estate for life. Hasty selection is bound to lead to misunderstanding. So if you want to understand a country’s culture, you can read some foreign newspaper, chat with your foreign friends. In addition you can let your foreign friends recommend several good television series.
How time files! One semester is over again. Looking back on it, Holistic English program definite is one of the most impressive things I experienced during this semester. When we were having the program, we got completely different homework assignment every time. Well, honestly speaking, when ordered to do the assignments, I felt it difficult or embarrassed to accomplish them. But now, without such kind of special assignments, life seems a little boring. Anyway, I have learned some feasible ways to learn English, such as watching English movies without Chinese subtitles, ABC role playing, English Corner and keep in touch with the foreign friends we already know. Therefore, I can keep on learning and improving my English even though this Holistic English class is over.
I am glad that I had the chance to experience the Holistic English program.

As you said, learning English is not only a classroom experience. We also need to strengthen our daily learning in the future. However, I will say is that you give us a lot of inspiration; and we have learned to take the initiative to learn English.
The holistic English class is over. The last few days when I checked my email and found that there were no more emails from Martin, I knew that the HE class had really ended. Suddenly, I find that I have formed the habit of checking my email-box timely, which I didn’t have before this HE class. I am sure that this is one of the ways Martin has affected me in my daily life that is we should do things on time but not until the last minute.
There are also other aspects Martin has affected us. He teaches us to view things in different sides and how to think creatively. He tells us to try our best to fulfill our assignments instead of just getting by. He reminds us to be responsible for ourselves and our parents and act like an adult but not a kindergarten. His passion for his work also has a deep influence on me and of course, the movies are good and the class discussions are interesting.
In this semester, I have tried a lot of new things because of this class. I have been an ABC and I have known a foreign friend. In the past, I have never imagined I could have a foreign friend because I was too shy to talk to strangers. I think all these activities will become an unforgettable part of my life. I also benefit a lot and make progress in my English. And I really will watch the remaining movies and continue this course by myself. Spending a whole term learning holistic English is the most precious experience in my life.
The teacher is a little strict, but he has his own teaching method to open our mouth. An ABC day and making a new friend offered many chances to me to speak out my ideas, the movies he chose were of different styles which were totally different from what I watched before, and my horizon was broadened and I learned much from them, about politics, economy, religion and so on, more than what I learned from books before. Thanks to this experience, from which I get to know how to improve my oral English and how to learn English correctly.
That Chinese English is ok impressed me most. It was the first time that I have heard it since I began to learn English at 13. That completely changed my attitude towards my oral English, and it inspired me to make my encouragement to open my mouth. Of course, as Martine said, I made a large progress since I dare to speak out.
It will be the most precious memory in my life and I will never forget what I have experienced this term.
There use to be many freinds who told me that the English teaching should not be like that during my early education time! And I know that was not a right path. But I had no choice. Honestly，holistic English class helps me lot. Like a fresh breeze, Martin gave me a totally different oral English class and I love it.
Through this class, I felt more confident to open my mouth and speak English. I also improved my reading and writing skills. It was my honor to be the assistant and I also learnt lot. I still remembered the first class I was almost late and Martin told me that “Are you forget, you are assistant and you’re supposed to be here 15minutes earlier than others”. God, I had forgotten that. So after then, every class I was earlier than others and also remind myself that I am the assistant that I must be a helper to Martin not a burden.

I must admit that HE class gave me the willies. The assignments and emails came one after other. Then I made a habit of checking emails everyday in order not to miss one important email from Professor Wolff. When the cell phone ring but the number I did not know, I have to think for a while should I say hello. But at the same time I must also admit that I improve my English greatly after Professor pushed me for a semester. So I have to say thank you for your effort.
Thank you for give me the chance. I really learn much from the holistic English, from which I know what I don’t know in the past. If you don’t tell me, I will not know the thing in the future either. It is not only an English program, but also it broadens our horizon.

Truth be told,I felt a little sad after finishing my final exam that quickly. Because there would not be a Holistic English class waitting for me to attend any more.

The class is over. But using English will never be over. I want to express my gratitude to the class. It helped me with my critical thinking and oral English. At the beginning, my spare time was full of homework and sometimes I even got bored with English. But the homework was valuable. I learned a lot by searching relative materials on the internet, such as Intellectual Property, Protecting myself from Sexual Harassment, Gandhi, Globalization etc. On the other hand, some homework required me to speak English out, such as ABC for a day, Make a new friend. They really embarrassed me at first, because I am not outgoing. But they are truly helpful to my oral English. I wanted to finish the homework, so I had to speak out, speak out and speak out.
