CLIMATE CHANGE

Climate change is a hot topic these days. A British Court has found several incorrect statements in the film An Inconvenient Truth and has blocked showing the film in British schools.

The United Nations Climate Control report was found to have relied upon “bad science” and has been disregarded.

Climate change is not in dispute. The science is in dispute. The impending doom is questioned.

The polar ice caps are melting. Iceland has lost 50% of its ice. These things are readily observable and need not be proved further.

The cause of global warming is not in dispute. Industrial dirty air discharges are the major culprit. Developed countries have caused the problem with their industrialization.

Now, as China and India commence industrialization to enhance their economic prosperity, developed countries want to compel China and India to assume the lion’s share of responsibility for reducing polluting emissions into the air.

The richest countries in the world caused the problem and now they want to prevent China and India from adding to the problem by adopting stringent and costly pollution controls.

China’s position is clear. If you tie the knot, you must untie it. The west does not understand this.

Why should China and India pay for the prior errors of industrialized nations?

Why should China and India’s industrialization be more costly than that of already developed and industrialized countries?

But is it right for China and India to continue unabated to add to the existing problem and further put its own citizens’ health at risk?

China drills more wells, seeds clouds amid drought

BEIJING: Emergency wells were being drilled and cloud-seeding operations carried out in southern China, where the worst drought in decades has left millions of people without water and caused more than 1,000 schools to close, officials said Thursday.

Provincial and national land resources bureau officials met in Kunming, capital of the hardest-hit province of Yunnan, to discuss details of deploying workers to dig wells and increase cloud seeding and other aid to people in need of drinking water, according to a director at the Yunnan Land Resources Bureau, surnamed Ma.

“The situation here will get worse in the coming months before it gets any better, but hopefully with more wells and water being diverted to those in need, we can help ease the situation,” said Ma.

The drought, which has left southwestern China suffering since last year, has affected about 61 million people and left more than 12 million acres (about 5 million hectares) barren in Guizhou, Yunnan, Sichuan, Chongqing and Guangxi, Xinhua News Agency cited the Ministry of Civil Affairs as saying.

For parts of Yunnan, it is the worst drought in a century, with about 5.4 million people facing water shortages, Ma said.

Workers there are drilling daily in hopes of digging 1,035 wells by mid-May, with 52 already functioning and 288 under way, providing 20 percent of the needed drinking water, he said.

“Cloud seeding hasn’t been very successful, so even though we are drilling for wells and diverting water from dams to people in need, new areas will begin to suffer as long as there is no rain,” said Ma.

No details were given on the cloud-seeding efforts. China has been experimenting with weather modification for decades, using a technique known as cloud-seeding to induce rainfall.

China’s huge land mass means drought can occur in one region while others have record-breaking temperatures and severe storms that can cause floods. A massive sandstorm earlier this week covered Beijing and other cities in northern China in a layer of sand and grit.

Since late 2009, mountainous Yunnan and its neighboring provinces have received little rainfall, causing crop and livestock losses worth 23.7 billion yuan ($3.47 billion), Xinhua said.

Neighboring Guizhou province has been hit with its worst drought in 80 years, while in Guangxi it is the worst in 50 years, according to a report posted on the National Flood Control and Drought relief Web site.

In Guangxi, 1,100 schools were closed in the towns of Hechi and Baise this week, affecting nearly 190,000 students and teachers, according to Xinhua.

“We’ve sent out teams to dig and drill for wells this week in regions that have been hardest hit in the province,” said an official who answered the phone at the Guangxi Land Resources Bureau, who refused to give his name.

In Guangxi, where sugar cane crops have perished and white sugar production is expected to decline this year, 67 producers have been forced to shut down, nearly double the number during the same period last year, Xinhua reported.

Military personnel have also been deployed to the disaster areas to transport water from Zhejiang in the east to Guizhou and Yunnan, according to China Central Television (CCTV).

CCTV showed footage on its Thursday noon newscast of soldiers unloading bottled drinking water from military trucks at a village in Yunnan.

Further south, the severe drought has dropped the Mekong River to its lowest level in nearly 20 years after an early end to the 2009 wet season and low rainfall during the monsoons, according to documents drafted by the Mekong River Commission.

The Mekong, which originates in the Tibetan Plateau and flows to southeast Asia through Yunnan, is the lifeblood for 65 million people in six countries - Cambodia, China, Laos, Thailand, Myanmar and Vietnam.

I read a piece of news on the QQ News web site a few days ago, which says the most parts of our country have an abnormal climate. It’s obvious that we’ve already heard and seen and felt the warning of global warming. It’s hotter and hotter in summer, with droughts and floods. We living in the south can seldom see the beautiful white snow recently years. Those white fairies just appear in our childhood memories, and they are instead by cold ice rain and hailsones which are melting in the air or after a few hours down to the earth. The spring and autumn are shorter, and we can’t feel the dramatic changes of season. We may be not those top scientists who can understand the exact meaning of the relationships between the data and the current situation. However, as one of the 6.3 billion people living in this unique beautiful planet, we are experiencing the unbelievable climate change. In such a situation, like the movie “An Inconvenient Truth ” tells us, whether developed or developing countries, they do have responsibilities to face this urgent situation directly. Dealing with this problem should not be just a policy or personal appeal, practical action should be taken. As I known and the public media said, China have indeed done somethings to deal with the greenhouse gas emissions. But I think that’s far from enough. We should never underestimate the seriousness of the problem. If the inconvenient truth is a truth, as the iceberg melting, many coastal areas would be underwater after several decades, including Beijing and Shanghai, the biggest cities in China. We can’t imagine what a disaster it is. Do not say “We will do it tomorrow.” Go now, from personal awakening to the whole country’s action.

I spend two hours in watching the movie “An Inconvenient Truth ” today. As a matter of fact ,there is no doubt that the world climate must have the greatly changed.Of couuse ,when you watch the movie ,then you may feel significantly shocked due to the truth about climate of terrible change. Because a lot of people can not get the first reserch material ,so we should have some doubt about the movie .But the trend of climate change is obvious. On the one hand, the skeptical person of the truth make the stupid mistakes about the evidences. On the another hand ,we should remeber the news which said that the climate scientist would not reveal the real reserch results. The public news about the climate change are overestimating the turth. So we must take more serious attitudes to the real change . At the same time,we need pay more attention to the responsibility related to the world climate change. All over the countries must take its corresponding responsibility for the terrible results.

Some time ago, in Copenhagen the capital of Denmark meeting with the heads of state to discuss global warming. This shows the importance of global warming around the world. Global warming is an extremely severe problem facing the world today. Its effects and causes have been on the rise and people need to do something about it before the problem gets any worse. If we can reduce the greenhouse gases going into the atmosphere, we probably can slow the rate of global warming and climate. There are a number of things that we can do to prepare for the changes that are coming. If we act now, perhaps we can “soften the blow” of the greenhouse effect.
    We must act.

The movie “An Inconvenient Truth” shocked me. Global warming has become a serious problem, to which we should pay more attention. As all well known, global warming not only can cause sea level to rise, making us lost our homes, but also can bring some changes in agricultural yields, glacier retreat, species extinctions and increases in the ranges of disease vectors. As a member of the earth, we are all contributors to global warming. Therefore, we all need to be part of the solution. Most national governments have signed and ratified the Kyoto Protocol, aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Also, we should start from ourselves and start from our side. Action should be taken to reduce or reverse future warming or to adapt to its expected consequences.

After watching the movie ” An inconvenient truth “, I’m shocked and by the drought of the southwest of China. And I inspire the Karl’ s persistence and what he has done for the climate crisis. At the end of the movie , I saw the Website of the climate crisis. Then I visited it and keeped it . Before watching the movie , I just have paid attention to the drought of the southwest of China , when I saw the pictures , I almost could ‘t believe it that is Yunnan provice , of which I have always deamed. And in the north of China, the sandstorm pay a visit to the most citys of the north of China this spring , even touch some citys in the south. At the beginning of the new years , there happened several earthquakes in the global. More and more climate issues, more and more natural disaster, maybe one day the earth will be destroyed completely as the movie ” 2012″ . How do you imagine ? The United Nations Climate Change Conference failed and had no development. It’s time for us to do something for the earth.

The movie “An Inconvenient Truth” is so impressive and moving to me. We talk about global warming all the time but we haven’t realized that the problem is so urgent and close to our life. The most moving part of the movie is when Gore showed us the first picture of our planet from outer space, and the earth is so beautiful. We have to do something to protect our beautiful planet which has given us so much. We protect our planet and we protect ourselves, then we protect our heart from being contaminated.

  • Shirley Class 16C

After watching the movie, there’s one sentence echoing back again and again in my brain:“What gets us into trouble is not what we don’t know. It’s what we know for sure that just ain’t so.” Besides, the scene of that poor frog lingers inside my mind till now. The day before yesterday my friends in Beijing sent me short messages,“Sand and Dust Storms hit Beijing again for the last four years.” Earthquakes, diseases, pollutions……Everything is changeable and uncontrollable. I even dreamed of 2012 last night. No florid decoration, no statesman-styled sermon, Gore shocked us by lots of solid scientific facts.
Just as the movie indicates, the side effects of global warming are alarming. A warmer global climate melts the ice caps, raising sea levels. What is more, it disturbs weather patterns, causing droughts, severe storms, hurricanes. People suffer a lot from disasters relevant to global warming.
April 22 is the Earth Day. Last year, the theme of the 40th World Earth Day is THE GREEN GENERATION. And Chinese topic is: be friendly to the earth——starting from economizing on resources. Global warming catches and holds our concern, for it affects us and will affect our later generations. To stop global warming we should make immediate and continual efforts. “Doing the right thing moves us forward.” “Are you ready to change the way you live?”Let’s just act from now on and from ourselves. Do it! Do it right! Do it right now!

  • Jay Class 11C

The climate is more and more capricious during those years. There are more extreme meteorological events which happened over the world. This is the global warning to us. We have to get in touch with the subject of climate. It is so urgent and hard to solve that we have to gather all countries’ strength. However, The Copenhagen Declaration doesn`t give the substantive solution. There exists a impassable chasm between industrialized nations and others. In my opinion, on one hand, the developing countries should make every effort to cut down on pollution. On the other hand, the developed countries are obligated to set a good example reducing pollution to the developing countries and provide fund and technology gratuitously. As the proverb said, it is no use crying over split milk. Only one earth, we have no turning back.

  • Joe Class3C

This topic is meaningful for us to discuss. My standpoint is simple. Developed countries should undertake the responsibility of climate change. Because they had ruined environment during the process of industrialization. Meanwhile the measures of environment protection are costly. Developed countries are more capable of protecting environment. That does not mean that developing countries are not responsible for climate change. We all know that China and India have the largest number of people in the world. If they develop without consideration about environment, there will be hell to pay. From the intense discussion between countries about climate change, it seems that every country is selfish and does not want to take more responsibility. But selfishness in this issue will cause catastrophe to our offspring.

As kwon to all, climate warming has become a serious problem to our society. This problem relates all people and all countries; we can not to say this only respond for somebody. The earth is unique homeland of human beings, if we can not live in the earth, I want to say, and nowhere can we go. Extremely urgent thing to make great efforts to protect our earth. When talk about to protect our homeland, all of people and all countries should help each other.

  • Anna Class 4C

Climate change been realized by the world for many years, but it is only researched by the scientist. Many persons just like us who are far away from the science do not know the exact informations,so most of us do not know how serious the climate is now.Maybe we are aware of somgthing different. We all have a sense that the weather is not normal in these two years.A sandstorm kicked up in many places where the sandstorm is a uncommon phenomenon there. It is strang in some places that the weather is warm in the morning and it is very cold in the afternoon,it is always changing.I think it is all the world’s responsibility to take measures to solute the problems.Whereever you live, whatever race you are ,all of us should have positive attitude, try our best to protect the beautifull earth.Because we are all the kids of the earth.

  • Maggie Class 11C

After watching the movie “An Inconvenient Truth”, I am extremely shocked by what I see. Our people were eager to develop the economic faster and quickly not caring about our conditions in the last century so now have to meet the gradually polluted climate. Form the movie, we can how seriously the climate damage our living space! It is no time to blame who should responsibility the results. All of the people in the earth should do them best to solve this globe issue in the way of union. It is no wise to attempt to escape the duty. If we want our offspring having blue sky, clean water like us, we should no doubt get together to make our earth more comfortably and beauty.

  • Tina Class 1C

It makes me a little difficult to get the full meaning of this movie. At the very beginning, I spent minutes to find the subtitles, then I thought maybe it is a chance to practice listening, though difficult, I tried.
Global warming has been very hot topic nowadays, but I thought most of us may haven’t realized that it is so urgent and serious. There are many pictures in this movie impressed me.The polar bear who swim such long distances to find the ice makes me very sad.I recalled the terrible drought now in the southeast, people tramp several miles to find water, some of which even lost their lives. It is said this drought also has something with the global warming.
In the end of the movie,it asserts that everyone can offer a help by changing the way we live.I think it is quite essential.

  • Stella Class 3C

After I finished the movie “An Inconvenient Truth”, I began to worry about the citizens who lived on the offshore city. Al Gore tells us the three reasons for the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere increasing. Firstly, it is the population. China has the most population in the world. Though America but not China has the highest carbon emissions, we still have to consider serious for our next generations. And the second reason is the new technology. In fact, it’s a double-edged sword. We can use the new technology to reduce the pollution. But at the same time it may lead to other pollution. What’s more, people’s sense is also a reason. We should take it seriously in our mind and carry it out. As the end of the film suggest, “When we pray, please take action from now.”

  • Elsa Class 3C

After watching the movie “An Inconvenient Truth”, I was shocked at the serious problem caused by us humans. And I was also moved by what the Al Gore has done. Luckily, his speech on global warming delivered all over the world has already wakened up many people and countries, and among them, some have taken some measures. This big challenge, we humans now facing, needs the global cooperation, but there are still some countries which do not attach importance to it and just focus on their own and short term interests. And those countries should wake up earlier when we can still do something to prevent it from being worse. Besides, as an ordinary person in the world, we can also contribute to this great work. We can plant more trees, switch to renewable source of energy and do every other thing we can. Remember, we do have only one earth.

  • Anna class11C

Our scientists have predicted the dangers of global warming, but after watching the film, I really felt the horrors of global warming. Of course, in real life, the temperature become increasingly hot , global sea level is rising, the atmospheric environment is getting worse and so on. Nowadays, governments of every country have more and more attention to global warming. Therefore, to conserve energy resources, we must develop and utilize of new resources in our daily life.

  • Lucy Class 11C

Before I watch this movie,I just have a little impression about Global warming, but now,I really realize that Global warming have bring so great impact on the earth and the human. In my opinion, protecting global environment and prevent global warming is not the responsibility of only one or two countries, which requires joint efforts of all the countries.Developing countries should change the economic development pattern, and try to use more new energy sources. What’s more, developed countries also need to take part in the these protect actions, because they should bear more responsibility for Global warming.Only through all the countries’ cooperation can we protect the earth we live in.

  • Henry Class 11C

Global warming has two facets. One is that as an environmental problem that we must face, and the other is a political matter of the world. Industrial polluted air is emitted without sufficient control in China, for instance, in Guangzhou city, the air is becoming worse and worse. Many people get nasopharynx cancer. Everybody knows that the polar ice caps are melting everyday. Maybe low-lying land close to the sea will disappear in some years. Besides, global warming is also a political issue–the richest countries in the world cause the problem but they do not want to pay for what they have committed themselves.

  • Jo Class 12C

    EDITOR’S NOTE: WATCH THE MOVIE

We have just one earth and there’s no other place for human beings to live on now.Facing the worse and worse environment of the earth,we are all worried and anxious. We Chinese want to make our best effort to save the earth.too.But what we desire is cooperation and equity! If the developed countries don’t want to be responsible for what they had done,if they just want to blame us and even want to utilize this problem to limit our development, how can they hope us to promise??We are just developing. Many people of our country can’t still make a living now.Don’t be so selflish!

  • David Class 2C

I agree with such a point, The richest countries in the world caused the problem and now they want to prevent China and India from adding to the problem by adopting stringent and costly pollution controls. Certainly I identity that we are in the same world and we have only one earth, every one of us should try to protect our earth, and I will do my best to take my responsibility. However, politics has no equal obligation, but only interests. Western world haven’t lead a good example even in the progress of protecting actions, regardless of the cause of pollution. China should try to reduce pollution and protect our environment on the one hand, and be ready to protect our country’s interest in the international negotiations.

  • Sally Class 3C

After finishing the movie” An Inconvenient Truth”, I realized the importance of protecting our earth from now on. As we all know, great changes have taken place in our homeland and the trend is not optimistic. We are developing our economy, at the same time, we are destroying our earth. It is not a wise choice. From this movie, I know that it is not only the government’s responsibility. It belongs to everyone, every country. We should start out small. For example, we can use public transport to reduce air pollution. We can plant more trees and protect them. Let’s do it together!

  • Gina Class 15C

Unfortunately, it’s hard for me to down load the movie An Inconvenient Truth from the Web. But fortunately, I have watched the movie two years ago in our environment ethics class. So please allow me to leave the reply by the help of memories.
What is the most shocking information in the movie is that two photographs shooting in the same direction but in different time are quite different. Several decades ago, ices and snows had been covering the whole mountain; but now, there are no more ices and no more snows. What comes into our view is the bald stone. What’s more, the speed of getting worm is faster and faster.
It is so terrible to hear that. Looking around our world, the temperature become higher and the climate become abnormal. What happens to Yunnan province is one of the warnings to human.
I think no matter what the governments argue for, as an individual person, we need to do each simple thing every day to save our environment for now on.

  • Andrea class 2C

The most important thing for China now is to help pepole in southwest solve the problem of drought. Large areas in southwest of China are experiencing a hard time, they have no rain since sep last year, now pepole can harly find any water to drink. I think this may be the reaction the nature give us for the activities we human beings have taken in past one hundred years.
Several days ago I wathched the movie—truth, it was about the global warming. The professor made a long speech about the global warming . The speech is very interesting, he showed us the formation and impact of global warming in detail. From the movie, I know more about the global warming, and have some thoughts. Undoutbly, gobal warming is a common phenomenon, it is a problem of the whole earth, not some countries only. But some developed countries have declared that China should take the main responsibility , it sounds ridiculous. Deveopled countries has developed for hundreds years, they had done what they would already, developing counties are just at the beginning of development, why should they take the main responsibilities? But now,it is inappropriate to debate who shoul take charge, what we should do is sitting down together and discuss the way to solve the problem.

  • Fiona Class 2C

This the second time I watched this movie, and everytime I watched I felt shocked , worried and sad about what happened in the earth. Ourself have experienced the enviroment change in recent years. In china, the extreme weather happens more and more frequently. The snow came too early in the north, and the drought sttacked several provinces recently.
I always wonder why so many disasters still don’t awake up people’s attention. Many countries still just care about the economic benefits. It is really a high time to take measures to protect the earth and the environment.

  • Michael Class 1C

The prior vice president of The United States Al Gore is the person who supports the environmental protection after he got out of the politics. He spares no efforts to engage in the movement.
As what we can see in the movie “an inconvenient truth”, the environment we count on is facing a terrible condition. The world is getting warmer and warmer, more and more ice has turned into water. The world is on the edge of disaster, all that we can do is to try our best to save our family from being spoiled, now, no matter what kind of country ,developed or developing country, we shouldn’t linger on the past, we need to focus on the future, we should bundle together to solve the environmental crisis.
If we work together, anything can be fulfilled.

  • Vivian Class1C

It gives me great shock after I see the film. It looks like that the disaster is coming. Well, maybe someone think it is a little exaggerated. But I should say that if we don’t improve the awareness of our environment protection, then it will become true. In my opinion, protecting environment is not scientists and governments’ matter. Everyone should do something that they can do. Well, maybe china’s industrialization is more costly because of the low-level industry technology. We can find that china has been doing her utmost to contribute to the environment.

As a saying goes, you can predict the weather according to the changes of the clour. However it is not applicant any longer because of the climate change of the Earth, our home.More and more carbon dioxide is emitted to the atomasphere where it acts like a warm blanket and holds in the heat. Then there is a name global warming.
In the film we can see the iceberg is melting at alarming rates. As a result, the level of the ocean will rise up which may make several countries sunk otherwise the situation is changed. I am quite deeply impressed with the little girl’s icecream melting immediately. How horrible it is!
Recently in southwestern China the catastrophe of drought happened. It havn’t rain as long as about two haundred and sixty days. The rivers are dry. The land is dry and the corps cann’t be started. The peasants are worried about their lifves. The drought victims have not enough water for drinking. They have to go to the mountain far away from their houses for some water.Sometimes they just get some dirty water. I am really sorry to say that even the children and the olds have to join in looking for water. It is unimaginable when you see the anxious expression on the faces of the refugee on the internet.
The Earth is our home for all the people in the world.Nowadays it is changing because of the human beings and their behavior. We can survive unless the destruction on the Earth can be stopped. We should recognize that it is high time for all of us to protect the planet from little to little which is the only one planet suitable for human beings’ existence

As you said, the world actually become warmer and warmer, for carbon dioxide which the industry discharged has exceeded the border of environment can accept , leading the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is exorbitant, finally it creates greenhouse. The greenhouse can lead to global temperature become high, then the snow in two polars melts, seas lever changes high, and local palce become more dry. So I think , whatever we think, the earth is mankind homes, every country should protect it, creating a better living environment for our offspring, at least we should not destroy their environment.
