RESPECT FARMERS AND PEASANTS
In China farmers and peasants are generally considered to be lower class people, poor and work manual labor outdoors.
In America and Canada farmers are some of the most respected and richest entrepreneurs
While the disparity of income between China’s urban population and its farmers/peasants grows larger daily, little is done to bring real change. The CCP is becoming increasingly concerned that this economic disparity may lead to social unrest.
Before looking down upon framers we should think about their contribution to society. If the farmers stop producing food, can we sustain our lifestyles? Can we really grow enough vegetables in backyard gardens or even on rooftop gardens to survive? Do we even know how to stat or maintain a garden?
Farming is the highest risk business in the world. Yes it is a business. There is a heavy financial investment and farmers must make a profit to survive.
Land risk – land ownership and use is risky. Land is taken away from farmers for development, most times without adequate compensation and illegally. Even when land ownership is secure, the soil fertility is a risk. Crops must be rotated and often nutrients must be added to make the soil productive. This costs money.
Land preparation – the land must be tilled, harrowed, fertilized, all at the proper time. This is labor intensive and costs money. If done improperly or at the wrong time it is money wasted and lost.
Weather – farmers are at the mercy of the weather. Too cold, too hot, at the wrong time, all investment is lost.
Seed stock – if the seeds are defective there is no crop. Money lost.
Water – too little or too much and there is no crop. All is lost.
Harvest – if f or any reason such as lack of equipment, lack of labor or lack of proper weather conditions the harvest is not timely, all is lost.
Logistics – failure of adequate transportation from farm to market means a lost crop.
Market conditions – the farmer is at the mercy of the market. Too much product at one time, the price is too low to make a profit.
At every turn the farmer is subject to conditions totally beyond control. What other business is exposed to such constant and high risks?
As China struggles with this situation, there is a simple solution, a food tax. People buying food should pay a tax that is rebated directly to the farmers to increase their income. This is called redistribution of wealth. Charge the rich and give to the poor.
If the rich do not want to share their wealth with those who make their rich life possible then they must face the adverse consequences of a farmer strike or insurrection. Rich people never lead revolutions. .
I AM PROUD TO BE A FARMER
I graduated from an agricultural land grant college in California with a major in Philosophy and a minor in Agriculture Business Management
In senior middle school I rode a bicycle 25 miles each day to work on a dairy farm and pig farm.
As a 35 year old business man I operated a cattle ranch of 5,000 mother cows in California.
At 45 years I developed a 125,000 sq mt. tropical plantation in Micronesia. I .developed the first orchid import business in Micronesia, importing orchids from Thailand
I have taught Tropical Agriculture in Middle School and Agriculture Business Law in University.
I have completed Masters work in Agriculture Business Management.
A 1% food tax would not be burdensome for anyone but would generate billions for farmer support. Migrant workers are usually fed by their employer and the employer would pay the food tax.
What about a 10% luxury tax? Surely someone who pays 2 mil. For a car can afford an extra 200,000 for the farmers. Someone who pays 60 mil for a luxury apartment can afford another 6 mil for the farmers. Someone who pays 2,000 for a new suit surely can afford 2,200 so the farmer can have 200.

After reading this article I keenly feel that the farmers in Chinese are really great. They make great contributions for our living, their work is full of difficulties and risk, but their reward is so little. Li Changpin, former secretary of the Party committee of Qipang Village, Jianli Country, Hubei Province, have ever written a letter to the Premier of the State Council, said: “the life of farmers is so hard, the country side is so poor, the agriculture is so danger”. As a result, a reform was brought in local places. Though farmers in China worked hard the whole year, most of them are still very poor nowadays. This situation may not be changed in a short time. But we should feel grateful for their contributions to us, do not look down upon they, and give them respect they deserve.
For many generations, my family have been farmers in a small village in south China. I love the pastoral landscape of the countryside. What is more, I’m proud of being farmer’s descendant. They’re industrious, courageous, virtuous, warm and sincere.
In the year of 2006, the Chinese government rescinded the agricultural tax ending the centuries-old practice of farmers paying taxes. Though the current situation of farmers is still not all that could be desired, I have confidence in their brilliant future.
Surely, farmers are worth to be respected. To some extent, farmers are the food and clothing producers of us.
In the past, being farmers was honoroble because farmers were regarded as industrious, brave, kind and honour. They usually are heartily called “farmer brother”. But, it is totally different now. Farmer is labelled by poorness, backward, rudeness and illiterateness.
In recent years, issues of agriculture, farmer and rural area is a persistently hot topic in the government work report. And more and more people start to concern about the income, medical treatment, education and life condition of farmers. In fact, in order to improve the life of farmers, the government has published a series of agriculture-friendly policies for farmers.
I hope in not too distant future, the farmers will be proud for their identity。
We should respect the farmers. Actually, in ancient China, almost all the governments in different dynasties pay more attention to the development of agriculture rather than business. In Han dynasty, about 2000 years ago, the central government took a policy of emphasizing agriculture and restraining business. By the law of that time, people who do business can’t be allowed to wear silk clothes and ride horses. That is because people in that age deemed business as a consuming work which can not produce anything thus should not be respected. However, from the perspective of history, this view is foolish and it restricts the development of trading, so the accumulation of capitals is not enough in ancient China. That is why ancient China hasn’t taken a way to capitalism.
After the building of PRC, especially the reform and opening up, CCP pay more attention to the development of business and trading. Lots of merchants make a fortune during lately three decades. However, the life of farmers hasn’t grown as quickly as the speed of GDP. We should care about the life of farmers and protect their behalves because they support us.
What is agriculture, I mean, its status? Is it just one of the three industries, is it a low use of land, a waste of land compared with factory ones? Of course not! But most don`t think so.
In my opinion, agriculture is one of the strategic things for a country like oil and state defense. Maybe, you will argue it is not so important. But I want to say most countries in the world subsidy their agriculture for export to keep the capacity of producing enough. If a country loses its agriculture, it will be in a dangerous condition. However, as a new very powerful national energy committee has been built, there is not such a institution for agriculture. So agriculture has not been paid enough attention. Is it because there are too many farmers in China? Maybe. We want to protect agriculture, we must protect farmers. There are many ways to do so, taxation, for example. But a more important way is to develop a good manufacturing industry, which can absorb many farmers as workers. When numbers of farmer become smaller, their states will be better.
I am a son of farmer, I really understand Chinese farmer`s life. I hope from my deep heart their life will be much better.
After reading this passage, I have mixed emotions. First of all, I was greatly touched by the sentence ‘I AM PROUD TO BE A FARMER’. My parents are farmers, so do my grandparents. They are all hardworking and virtuous. And I am proud of them. But on the other side, I feel sad. The farmers in China are always in the lower class and this lead another social phoneme ‘migrant workers’. They have little money by farming and go to the big city for more money. They leave their hometown and their children to go to circumambient unknown. In the big city they take the laboring oar and earn not much money.
At the end, I think there are many chance in the rural area too. I see some successful cases by farming. They do aquaculture, raise pigs, and grow vegetables. And the key factor is technology. Our agricultural technology drops far behind the developed countries. So I think our government should focus more on the farmer’s education and culture more agricultural specialist.
In this winter vacation,I have watchen Network News Broadcast of CCTV,the most impressed is there were many newes about “New Countryside” .In order to improve farmers living, government have made a lot of policies. “San Nong”(三农,countryside, agriculture, farmer)problem is a hot spot. Though there are not much farmers obtain benefits by now,it is a important policy. In my hometown, farmers are just as anyother, no one would look down them.
I very much agree with that farmers are respectable for their great contribution to the society.
According to the relevant data, farmers constitute the largest percentage of China population. However, the income and status of the farmers did not match with this.
In my opinion, there are three reasons that lead to this situation. Firstly, as well as it has plenty of cultivated land, China has a large population. So the per capita cultivated land is small in fact, that means most farmers don’t own much cultivated land and it is hard to achieve large-scale cultivation. Secondly, many farmers are lack of advanced planting techniques and sufficient information about market. Finally, there too many people that are not fully aware of the importance of farmers and agriculture.
However, as we all can see, the Chinese government is making great efforts to improve the situation. Many measures have been taken, such as technical guidance, rural medical insurance and abolition of agricultural tax, etc. And I believe the situation will get better with the policy.
No agriculture, no industry and no progress in social civilization. Agriculture dates back to several centuries ago and since that the farmer have started feeding the world like a forever mother. I was so touched when I read the ordinary story from an ordinary farmer in California. He was so dedicated to the risky yet beneficial business. I think the students who has the oppotunity to attend his class on agriculture in America are quite lucky in nowaday’s society where modernization proceeds so rapidly as if the agriculture and the farmer are gradually left far behind and seemingly it is not within people’s sight any more. Anyway, I hope more people pay attention to the farmers, never forgeting the fountain of today’s civilization—agriculture.
I strongly agree with the assertion that we should respect farmers for the reason that they made a great contribution to society and take a huge risk to run the business of farming. However, in my eyes, why so many people in China look down upon farmers? Not because they didn’t realize the importance of the role what farmers play in the society, but because they despise some farmers’ behavior with low standards of literacy.
Some people claim that farmers have such a low level of knowledge and culture, while they never thought that there is no one but longs to be literate. Compared with the popularity of education in urban areas, most farmers in China didn’t receive good education with limited economic conditions in the rural families, especially in those remote poor areas. Consequently, farmers who didn’t receive enough education may not have good health and eating habits, also with very conservative attitudes such as the concept of “early marriage, early childbirth”, “the more sons, the more happiness” and “men are superior to women”, which all be seen as the typical feature of a farmer in China in someone’s opinion. However, should we blame an insufficiently educated farmer because the government and his poor family can’t assure him an equal opportunity of receiving education?
To sum up, I hold that no one has the right to criticize farmers, but what we shoud do is to do our utmost to creative equality of opportunity by popular education, without which neither freedom nor justice can be permanently maintained of our country.
Soon afterwards, a story came to me. “You’re like a farmer!” is commonly spread in mainland China to show your disrespect of someone indecent whereas the westerners could not possibly understand a bit of this for FARMER is merely an occupation just as an investment bank analyst. This is largely a culture focus. Well, bias and prejudice are everywhere here in China about FARMERs, those who till and harrow in the blistering sun of summer and they fertilize and pesticidize in the hard blow of winter. What a deed as to look upon farmers just because they’re manually confined and at the mercy of everything: degradation of soil, over-pumping of aquifers, the risk of sowing fake seeds and scarcity in labor wish to stay in rural areas.
You may choose to be DECENT in an office, having nothing to do with hoes and tractor. Still no bold words dare you make like you can survive without them. By counting back in your family tree, believe it or not, most of your ancestors are FARMERs as it showed in an estimate. And such traits as labor-intensive and lack of efficiency in Chinese farming work largely due to little arable land per person, the great labor force surplus and many other technical and natural limits. Plainly, we are in totally different condition from the US. In this sense, policy tilts and shifts to farmers in China like maintaining proper grain prices and so forth is just a pleasant deed.
I come from the rural area. I have deep affections of the countryside and I am very proud of being the son of the farmer. The rural population accounts for about 80% of the total population of China. Agriculture is the lifeblood of China, and without the devotion of farmers, there would not be such a China today . The communist party got power depending on the ordinary farmers, but the concern about farmers is still scarce , and the social status of them is very low, which means we must make a long-term effort and work hard to solve the problem.
I think, farmers are very important to the economy of china and the survival of other people. If a country have no farmers,it will perish. But the situation of farmers in China is very different from America.Because the national conditions between these two countries are distinct.America is a developed country in the world. It can give farmers lots of financial insurances or helps according to its national fiscal capacity.Howerver,China is a developing country and has not enough money to help all farmers.Chinese premier and other officials have paid lots of attention on farmers recently and institute some law about how to improve the lives of farmers. If we want to carry out the luxury food tax to return the money to farmers,we should build a sturdy supervisal system to oversee the money from the food tax. So,in my opinion, the food tax is relevant with the regime in China.
The author has mentioned the terrible situation of farmers in China. I do agree with most of them. As we known, the new government after 1949 declared to liberate the farmers from the exploration of landowners. We do believe the Chinese government had devoted much time and sources to the problem and had achieved a great progress. However, there were still many puzzles to be resolved. In the 1979, the reformation began and the first action was to change the management of agriculture. To be honesty, we should recognize the problem get more serious in some ways.
The article considers the risk of being a farmer is much greater than other business. Maybe it is not right. In my opinion, every business has its particular risk. If you don’t have enough knowledge and experience, capital and relationship, you are likely to fail. Therefore, the problem of Chinese farmers is not the difficulty of their industry, but the unequal position in the whole society. People in the cities often discriminate unfairly against the poor farmers. The rich label them with uncivilized strangers and hate to get along with them. Most of people still can’t realize that they wouldn’t enjoy comfortable lives without the contributions of farmers and the labor forces coming from the country.
I do agree the government should impose the agriculture tax for the better lives of the work-hard farmers. The service in the village is still so poor that children of farmers can not have opportunity to enjoy studying and healthy care. In a word, we should change our attitude to the framers, learning how to respect them truly. In addition, we should take much more care about our big family members, because we are living in the same earth.
I’m from the countryside and my parents are farmer. I have gone through the changes of the countryside. in fact, in my hometown the life of the farmers are better. though, what you talked is still existed , but I don’t think it is as serious as you talked. many of farmers haven’t just depend on the lands and crops, they have many other living way, such as transportation, business, fishing farmer and fruit cultivation, even horticultural.
And the mechanization of farm isn’t suitable for the south of China but is important in the north of China. In China , there is little lands for the many people of the south but there are many lands for the little people of the north. and the major landform of the north is plain but is hills and bowls in the south .
As this article says, farmers are the lower class people. Taken up about to 75% of the national population, Chinese farmers only have been sharing a small portion of the social wealth for a long time, no more than 4%. Farmers, including migrant farmers, are the social vulnerable group without doubt. They work hard, create more social wealth, but live poor lives with deficient social security.
The Chinese government has been spending many years to develop the modern industries. Under the price control of the government, many resources have removed from agriculture to morden industries. Nowadays, the government is aware of this consequence, and is trying to increase the farmers’ income and promote their social status. For example, the agriculture tax is cut, and agriculture subsidies are increasing year by year in the government’s budget. I hope that the farmers’ lives will be improved a lot in the future. As we know, China’s biggest problem is the problem of farmer. The one who solves the problem of farmers is able to solve the problem of Great China.

My parents are both peasants. So I have known their situation. Peasants are different from farmers, they only have so little land to cultivate that they cannot be able to face the challenge of domestic and global market. I remenbered that last year there were many oranges abandoned by people and decayed in the trees because it’s so cheap that the gains could not affort the labour cost. That was not a single thing and not a special year, I have ever seen many such scenes. Meanwhile, agriculture is seasonal that the peasants free except for seeding and harvest have to go to city for job. We call them “peasant-workers”. Because of the lack of skills, they have to do that work which is dirty, tiring and not very well-paid. Thus, the develoment of our society and improvement of our life included the products of a large number of peasants. They should have rights to share profit of our progress. Perhaps we can say that there are many things to do for government to improve the peasants’ situation and it still has a very long way to go. However, for ourseves we should respect peasants from now on..
yes, the farmers are respectful in the world. After reading this article, I realized that farming is not only working manual labor outdoors but also the wisdom. Farming is a science more than a job.
In China farmers are the Social Vulnerable Group. As mentioned in this article, Land is always taken away from farmers for development, most times without adequate compensation and illegally. And farmers have few skills except farming. Once they lose their land they lose the basic ensure of a better life. The government should do something to help these people who lose their land out, for example to supply trains on different skills for a new job.
For those who still work on their land with their shoulder to collar. The government should try its best to increase the farmers’ incomings. Charging the rich and giving to the poor can work out. Everyone will not refuse to help the farmers by a little tax.
Of course, I agree with Deng Xiaoping’s point of view. Discussion plays an important role in our lives . Through debate, we can better understand others and expand our horizons . So we must learn to listen to different voices.
I always think that farmers are worthy of our respect, and we can learn a lot from them. Farmers are always working hard, they are kind, simple, they looked mediocrity but feed all the people. However, there are many people look down up on the farmers, they feel that the farmers are poor, uneducated, and have no contribution to the progress of our society. Obviously, this view is wrong, they do not find the greatness of the farmers.I have to say that the farmers are the world’s most commendable person.
Worst of all,the situation of the farms is not good in China, lots of them are extreme poverty, they also bear great risks and pressure. What’s more,in the bad years,it is difficult for them to maintain lives. Therefore,I think government needs to take more measures to help farmers increase income, so that they can really live a prosperous life.
We should respect farmers, just as we respect the scientists, doctors, lawyers, like. The farmers of the community, the country had made great contributions, and should earn our respect. In recent years, farmers have greatly improved the standard of living, I believe that they’d be getting better.
As the nature is our human’s mother, farmers are indispensable for us to live happily. We should learn to respect and love them.I am a famer’s daughter,so I know that even if they work hard all the year round,it’s not easy to improve their lives obviously. As a student,it is difficult for me to explain the reasons. However,I belive that the whole is temporary and our lives will be better and better.
“Farmers are really hard, the rural areas are really poor, and the agriculture is really in danger”, almost all the Chinese people were very familiar with these sayings years ago. However, the lives of the farmers currently have been improved for a lot, as much more agriculture ordinance that is benefit for the farmers has been taken into practice, such as the canceled agriculture tax.
And I believe that, more and more Chinese farmers in the future will enjoy a much better life than today’s.
I grew up in a town, but my hometown is in rural areas and my ancestors are farmers.I have respect for peasants, because I respect my grandfather. My grandfather is a traditional farmer who have the quality of the older generation of chinese peasants—honest and diligent. He received the traditional education and is able to read books and newspapers. The chinese characters he knows is not fewer than I.
However, most people in society of china don’t have respect for peasants. They think the peasant is vulgar and low quality. Most of the younger generation in viliage also think their parents and ancestor toiled in the field till sunset and the incomes is low,so they like to hire out for working, instead of tilling in the viliage.
Today is a difficult situation that university graduates are facing with in finding a job.Few jobs could be provided in the developed cities. The chinese government encourage the graduates to go to rural areas, some of them become the village official to serve the farmers, and some even work at the farm, using their knowledge that they learn from school to develop local agriculture. That is a favourable phenomenon.I hope that the living standard and social treatment of chinese peasants would improve gradually, and enjoy the respect and privilege which is the same as the urben citizens in the near future.
As to farmers,it occurs to me that the word farmer seems to be different from the one peasant. In America the pepole who engage in the agriculture can be called farmers. But in China maybe it is better to call them as peasants. The author says in the article that In America and Canada farmers are some of the most respected and richest entrepreneurs.I think the social status of a group of people much depend of their economics and the authority. In our country there is a preferential policy for the industry’s development in the price of agriculture. Now the industry is going on well and many people become rich because of the reform and openness of China to the world. And also it is difficult for the government to make appropriate policies for the compensation of the agriculture and the peasants. As far as I am concerned, the peasants don’t get enough payments as what they diserve.I really hope that the government pay more attention to the peasants and actually do some action to them in order to improve their situations.
I am proud of farmers but not proud to be a farmer, the pride is just related with their spirit, not this industry. When I was young, my parents were farmers too. I have seen so many things about farming: hard work with sunshine or rain, life was not on easy street as well. I treasure that time and I am pleasant to have an excellent holiday there, but I don’t want to be in that kind of life again. I daren’t say everyone is like me though, most people around me don’t want to be farmers. No one looks down upon farmers in China, the only reason happened like that is because farmers are generally considered to be poor and work manual labor outdoors. That is why premier Wen is trying to raise the income of farmers. China is an agrarian country, for years to come, farmers’ life will be better and better. But if farmers in China want to be the most respected and richest entrepreneurs like in America and Canada, much more time will be needed.
I can’t agree more with the author. Yes, we should respect the farmers. Without them, we can’t enjoy delicious meat and vegetables freely and happily at home, we can’t go to work and study with enough energy. They back up the society but they don’t have enough respect from society and are always looked down upon. What’s more, they earn relatively much less money than urban citizens; they have to face high risk from nature and society. If it rains too much or too little in a year, they won’t have good harvests. If a certain kind of food is not popular in the market, they will earn even less money.
I think the most important reason why farmers earn too little money is that the technology of agriculture in China is relatively poor. Most of the farmlands are cultivated by manpower but not by high-tech machines. The productivity is low. Most of the farmers are not well educated so they are not able to use knowledge to increase their harvest. I suggest the government should pour more capital to upgrade the machines in the countryside, and invest more to enhance the education level of farmers, besides the food tax policy.
It’s a good question. Farmer in china make great contribution, however, they harvest much less than what they should. More attention should be paid to the problem of unjust distribution.
I am proud to say that I have never looked down upon the farmers. I myself even have relatives who plant vegetables themselves. From my point of view, everyone is an indispensible member to the society; everybody has his own role in the community, and no matter what the role is, he/she is the one the whole city cannot go without. Just think about if there is no dustman, no farmer, no gatekeeper, etc. what our life will be?
Given that the importance work the farmers doing, plus the disparity of income between farmers and the city residents, we should pay more attention to their work and life. The government should give more support to their work, and we the public ought to pay them more respects which they deserve.
As the comments wrote down before, many people mentioned that he or she agreed with “respect farmers”.And me too.As a student of social work,I think we also should face the reality in China.Yes,”farmer” is not a honorable job:low income,high-demanding work, low social prestige.
Not as the situation in USA,farmers in China mostly can’t own a large land to plow and sow, although China is known to be a big country abounding in natural wealth.Land is precious in China now.
Farmers once were respected by others, esp in Mao period. But now we face the leading theme of being wealthy and powerful, all and all come to GDP.And the misleading notion is that we will become rich if we develope our industry and tertiary industry.Agriculture is being ignored,at the same time, the living standard of farmers.
So how will it going on to chinses farmers?
As we all know, China is such a large agfieukural country. that the majority of the population is farmers. Farmers play a vital role in China resulting from providing food, without which we cannot live. At the same time, farmers support industry with various kinds of raw materials.
Most farmers work hard from dawn to dusk, with little time to rest or entertain themselves. However Some people look down upon farmers instead of appreciating their constribution.
The phenomenon is common which is related to the low social status of famers.
It’s essential for government to improve the working conditions of the village chiefs by providing necessary policy and financial support so as to remove the burdens of famers. Simultaneously, we should thank back sincerely ——that is ,to realize that something has been offered and deserves gratitude .
Farmers are the greatest men in this world, as we are taught since our childhood. But, believe it or not, it is a really different circumstance to be a farmer in China and in USA. The social status of Chinese farmers is menial. They are poor in economic, lack of lots of human rights which they are supposed to have. CHINA, People’s Republic of China, is a Socialist country, which is supposed to mean that every Chinese citizen together will possess everything belonging to this country. So far, China government has been trying hard to improve and twist this embarrassing situation. As a Chinese, I sincerely wish the day is coming much earlier when farmers can be the farmers in USA. I hope they can free themselves from the tragic life, and enjoy a new and prosperous life.
Wow~ it is hard for me to talk about this topic. How can Chinese farmers to proud of what they have done when they have little money in their cards and occupy the inferior position in society? That is impossible. So in order to satisfy farmers in our country, there is something we should do.
Firstly, governments should shape a set of public policy to lessen farmers’ burden, including giving some pension, offering some loan and things like that. Besides that, companies also play increasingly important roles to help farmers to lower their cost, enhance their crop by supplying timely message, useful production guide and sometimes cooperate with them. What’s more, the press exerts great influence to our life. Consequently, if they pay more attention to rural areas and farmers, instead of urban areas and the rich, inform technological innovations about farming, it surely will contribute to the advance of farmers. In conclusion, all of us should do something to make farmers live better, who are the disadvantage group in our country.
You don’t want to be a farmer here.
I was born in a farm family in an Eastern City of Guangdong., Maoming City. My family was not rich, and still just makes enough to keep us from hungry. Every member, including my grandparents who are in their 70s, is working pretty hard to earn money. But the production of the land is too little. Only about 20 percent of the product is profit, because the input is very high. For example, the price of the equipment is very high. The situation is not so much change compared to that ten years or twenty years ago. What is highly said the tax on farmers is gone will make them to lead a better life is another great lie. The time the tax is gone, the inflation is on the way. Now only the old, the child and their mother is home, for they have to raise their springs. The cost of living in the city makes them could not join their father who is working very hard and lead a un-respected life. We call this money or job discrimination. I don’t think the situation is going to change much if nothing much is changed to the so-called National People’s Congress. Could the government tell me how many farmers are in the National People’s Congress? But the good news is we are indeed making improvements to future.
I very much agree with the author says about the famers, people,no matter his identity and what are respect for the famers. In China famers pay a lot, made great contribution, but life has difficult, however this situation has changed in recent years. The governments are increasingly attache the rural, the famers and the agricultural, improving the living stardars of famers.Nevertheless the famers shuold be given more concernments. We shuold pay gratitude to them.
I come from a small village. Both of my parents are farmers. I have something to say about Chinese farmers.
Since the reform and opening policy, the situation of Chinese farmers has improved. At least most of the farmers do not need to suffer starvation any more. But frankly speaking, compared to people in the urban area, many Chinese farmers are still living a poor life.
The farmer’s work is very hard. Most of the farmer’s work is still done by handwork in my village. They have to work outdoors no matter it is raining, extremely hot or thundering. Besides, just as the article says, farmers have to face a lot of risk, for example, the weather, unexpected natural calamities, insect pest, etc. Sometimes they work very hard but they get nothing in the end. Compared to the industrial products, the price of the agricultural products is really low. Farmers can’t get many profits from selling their products.
The gap between farmers and the people in the urban area is becoming larger and larger. Farmers cannot receive good education and enjoy the social welfare. They have less opportunity than urban people. The infrastructure in the countryside is not good enough. In our village, many young people go to cities to find a job to earn a better life. They will go back home once or twice a year in some special holidays like spring festival. Only the old people and kids often live in the village.
In recent years, some policies to farmers have changed, for example, the tax on farmers is cancelled. The government gives some subsidies to farmers each year. And the social security and medical system for farmers are reformed. But China still has a long way to go. I do hope that the situation of Chinese farmers will be improved.
In china, farmers are usually divided into tow parts, one are those who always stay in and live on their cropland, the other one are those so called farmer workers. Wu Xiaobo, one of the famous media people, said that Chinese farmers had sacrificed five times for the development of the whole country in the recent history of China. In deed, our amiable and respectful farmers have been making too much contribition to our country and our daily life voluntarily or not. However, they are still at the bottom of this society and looked down by some people, and usually they create the most wealth while get the least, that is unfair! One of the gratifying news is that the farmers life are getting better and our government and the whole society pay more attention to improve the farmers’ situation.
Not like the farmers in the US, a large parts of Chinese farmers work under very low-level technology condition. Most of them are just manual workers. With very low income, most of them are living in the lowest class in Chinese society. Although the government concentrated on these people, nothing is changing. Chinese people will not want to be a farmer. Nowadays, many youngsters, who are from farmer family quit their farm work and go out to do other jobs. Because of its low yield, there is just very little resource and capital will be invested in this sector. Subsidy from government can’t solve this problem fundamentally. I think we need to improve the profit of this sector to absorb capital and human resource.
The different treatment, the same status, “farmer” –this word does mean so differently between China and America.
Nowadays, farmers have become the symbol of poor, ignorant, even rude in China. Many person look down to them, don’t respect them, not to mention want to be a farmer. However, as the article says, without farmers, how can we sustain our life? Maybe, more and more person have ignored the importance of the farmers.
In fact, the farmers in China are mostly honest, kind-hearted and brave. In history, it is no exaggeration to say that “farmers are the creators of history”. Why the status of farmers become lower and lower today, I think the real root may be farmers have never had their true social power and political status, have never own education material conditions, not to mention have the political opportunity from ancient to modern.
Although Chinese government has done a lot of efforts to improve this situation, we can notice clearly there is still a long way to go for Chinese farmers if they hope get the same respects as American ones.
In general, the situation of farmers in China is not very good. They work hard to produce the crops which Chinese feed on but they do not get the reward they deserve because they can not determine the price of the agriculture products. The society does not give full attention and respect to the farmers’ living. Years ago they gave enough support and did great contribution to the growth of national construction, but the development of rural economy was behind and the farmers were ignored by the government to a certain extent. Fortunately nowadays the government is beginning to take some measures to subsidy the farmers and rural economy in order to make their lives better. And I believe farmers’ lives will get better and better in future with the rapid development of China.
There is a word saying you’ll never know the feeling if you never experience it, and I want to say we’ll never know the hard life deeply of the chinese farmers if we never experience that kind of life. Before the government rescinded agricultural taxes, the profits of farming were only just enough for their surviving and taxes, leaving little to afford their children’s education and medical health care. I have seen most of my classmates quitted school and many farmers didn’t go to hospital even if heavy sick because of the high medical expenses. Maybe some people mark Chinese farmers with less schooling, savage and a little dangerous (for exmaple, they are probably intended to steal because of poverty), on the contrary, they are virtuous, honest, industrious and warm-hearted in fact. They have been working diligently from generation to generation to support the development, so respect them who make great contribution to our country. With the implementation of a series of policies that have stimulated agricultural development and protected the interest of farmers, I believe there will be a promising future of Chinese farmers.
In general, I agree with the views of author. Moreover, I would like to introduce some information of farmers in china. Firstly, Chinese farmers are groups of people without well education background but they are creative for the reform was activated by their creation of “household-contract responsibility system ” and their courage of breakthrough.
During the era of planning economy, agriculture products surplus were levied by government to support development of industry, during the process of opening up and reform, farmers who have talents of entrepreneur leave suburb and rural region and settled down in cities, young students who are well educated do not want to go back their underdeveloped hometown instead of staying in cities. Therefore, the rural areas have no qualified human resources to develop its economy, it is common that in some countries young people are all outside to work and study, only left the old and the upspring who both cannot receive well treatments.
Another problem is about agriculture, rice’s plantation entails much labor and efforts than other kinds of crops, and the fields are so muddy and scattered that applying machines encounters far more problems than expect, which hinder enhancing agriculture production efficiency and farmers’ income growth. China has a large population of agriculture; it cannot succeed in reform and opening up without finding appropriate solution to problems of farmers and agriculture. Our public sector should encourage graduates from university go to develop their causes in rural areas through economical and political stimuli and not just stay at propaganda stage of their concepts. when complaining openings are less to fit them in cities students should understand human resources in cities are many enough to allow their potential employers to cut down their salary but they still have huge advantages in wide rural areas.
Agriculture is the fundamental base of society progress. If there is no agriculture, what will we eat, what will we dress, what will we use? The living situation of farmers in China and America is quite different. I remember in my junior school, teacher told us that person work on agriculture in China is called ”peasent”, while that guys in America are called “Farmer”, farmer is richer than peasent, of course this is a joke. Farmer is important for the social civilization, but the living environment of them is worth of being paid close attention to. According to this article, I know that the daily work of them is so heavy and endure many uncertainty. They faces more challenges about survival, children’s education, medical care, and so on. In China the population of farmers is about the third proportion of the whole population, which is a huge group. In ancient time, every revolution was promoted by farmers who are treated unfair. Now in our country, farmers are looked down upon by some of upper level persons. As the professor says “the disparity of income between China’s urban population and its farmers grows larger daily”, it is a very dangerous signal. The government and the whole society should pay more attention to vulnerable group. Draft useful politics to improve farmers’ benefits!
As a student from village in the north of China,I deeply realise the farmer’s hardship. We should respect farmers, they go on burning the candle at both ends, they contribute much to the country but get very little. And why? Maybe our country dosen’t put enough stess on farming though the central committee puts forward a series of policies such as ACPP,but it will need a long time to produce apparent effect. We should undertake changes in various directions.I think the farmer’s status will improve under our efforts in the long run.
As we were young ,we were taught to cherish grain, because they are hard-worn.Of cause we learned that the farmers should be respected.
In my memory, there had been a big flood in my hometown. The flood continued for thirty days. And many areas had been flooded areas, because the flood water burst the dam.The land was desolated by floods, the farmers lost all the plants in the flood. Many of them also didn’t know how to live on.Their life full of risks, they can’t control weather, soil, seed and so on.They try their best to work and live better. So we should remember them and respect them.
I am the son of farmers, and I deeply understand what a hard life they are having. I can not agree more. Without their hard working, we cannot have such an affluent life. We should look at this issue objectively. This is a stage in the process of China’s modernization. The Chinese government will pay more attention to this issue. And I believe that our country’s farmers will have a good future.
Indeed, farmers deserve our respect. Generally speaking, farmers are hard-working, brave, rustic, and kind. Their contribution to the development of our country is great. As we all known, without farmers’ hard working, we cannot have enough food and clothes; without them, we cannot accumulate enough capital to support the development of other industries and construction of modern China; of cause, without them, there cannot be those who live a comfortable life and laugh at farmers. In the end, I want to mention that the route of farmers’ predicament is unfair policy, not farmers self.
Recently, National People’s Congress and Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference are held in Beijing. Issues about farmers are very hot because now the farmers’ problems really make the government unrest. Low income and discrimination is so unfair to farmers. As the author says, farmers do a job really risky. Weather, seeds, logistics, all these factors will make great influences on their income. They work very hard to make urban people have food to eat. No matter they are educational or not, their contributions deserve everyone’s respect.
In China, there is a typical phenomena called that your respect from others depends on your income. So, I thoroughly support the food tax, which is a very good way to increase farmers’ income and solve the big rich-poor gap.
Two thirds of China population is farmers, and my grandfather is a hard-working farmer too. I respect them. And the government should make more effective solutions to make their life better and gain them respect.
I respect farmers, who are always hard-working and sincere. They are working day and night to generate enough food for the society, but earn littlie from society in China. In my hometown, many farmers are afraid of getting ill because they can’t pay the high price of medicine, what a pity! Most farmers are living a poor life in our country. Therefore, I think we should support any measures the government takes to benefit the life of farmers.
