Taiwan
When I commenced teaching business in Wuhan, China in 2002, all the new foreign teachers were subjected to an orientation by the Wuhan Public Security Bureau. We were informed that we were precluded from discussing Taiwan, Tibet or Religion with Chinese people, in or out of our classrooms. Having great respect for the rule of law, I have never violated this admonition and do not intend to do so here. The purpose of this post is to state my personal opinion and give others the opportunity to state theirs.
Throughout WW II (the second Sino-Japanese war) and China’s efforts to rid itself of the Japanese occupation; the USA lent aid to Chiang Kai-Shek’s democratic Nationalist Government for several reasons. First, Japan was also an enemy of the USA, having conducted a sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Second, the US wanted to support the burgeoning democracy promised by Chiang Kai- Shck. Third, the US paranoia about and vehement prejudice against communism and its desire to help Chiang Kai-shek prevail in the long running civil war against the Chinese Communist Party
After the Japanese surrender in 1945, he attempted to eradicate the CCP, with continued support from the USA.. Ultimately, bolstered by support from Soviet Russia, the CCP defeated Chiang, forcing the Nationalist government to retreat to the Chinese island of Taiwan (Formosa).
The USA continued its hostility towards the CCP right up to the famous Nixon-Mao handshake in 1972. Subsequently the USA has had a policy of engaging communist China while maintaining its treaty to defend Taiwan. There were two primary reasons for engaging China. First, Nixon erroneously believed that this was in the best economic interests of US business in light of China’s hugh population base of potential consumers of US products. Second, the US believed that engagement would bring about eventual democratization of China. Over time, both have proved erroneous.
Although the US recognizes the One China policy and does not support Taiwan’s bid to be an independent sovereign nation, the US continues to sell “defensive” missiles, fighter jets and other instruments of war to Taiwan, an act that strains Sino-US relations.
The US claims to support the reunification of Taiwan and mainland China through peaceful means brought about by the Chinese people. However, US actions belie this claim.
In fact, the US does everything possible to encourage Taiwan to remain independent of mainland China and to resist reunification interests. The US claims it is supporting democracy on Taiwan but this claim is highly suspect. Taiwan is the most forward friendly military position in the Pacific that is closest to mainland China. A friendly Taiwan is the US hope for containing mainland China.
The Taiwan situation is of the US making. The US backed the wrong horse but refuses to admit its error, apologize and move on.
Let us put Taiwan into proper perspective. Taiwan (Formosa) has always been a part of sovereign China. It is a renegade province only because of US support and US missiles.
That is right; US missiles do exist on Taiwan.
Consider Cuba and the Russian missiles incident. Cuba has never been a part of the sovereign US. But when Russia supplied missiles to Cuba during the Kennedy administration, the US was ready to go to war if they were not removed. Why can’t the US see the parallels? China sees US missiles in Taiwan just as the US saw Russian missiles in Cuba. The distance between Cuba and the US is further than the distance between Taiwan and mainland China. US missiles in Taiwan pose a much greater threat to China than Russian missiles in Cuba posed to the USA.
Chinese Provinces are most similar to States in the US. There is absolutely no way any US State would be allowed to have the kind of relationship with a foreign sovereign that the Chinese Province of Taiwan has with the US.
Everything about the US policy toward Taiwan is offensive to China and rightfully so. The US inserted itself into the middle of China’s civil war, backing the losing side, and refuses to apologize and get out.
It is US military interests that fuel US-Taiwan policy far more than the so called preservation of democracy.
Democracy is not necessarily the savior of the world.
It was Communist China that prevented the complete financial meltdown of Asia in 1997 and again it was Communist China that precluded a global economic meltdown in 2009. China’s conservative currency policy and control acted as a buffer against the reckless uncontrolled currency policies of the west. It was Communist China that saved the global economy from bankruptcy.
The US fights a war in Iraq and another in Afghanistan financed by US treasury bonds sold to China. The US 2009 economic recovery act is also financed by the sale of US Treasury bonds to China.
In the past 30 years the CCP has brought great educational benefits and economic prosperity to hundreds of millions of people. There is no western democracy that could have done so much for so many in such a short time. It is hypocritical for any country to criticize Communist China for its form of Government. No western form of democracy could effectively manage the lives of 1.3 billion people as the CCP has done. The US has not done nearly as much for its people.
It is time for the west to get over its fear and paranoia about communism, time to bury McCarthiesm once and for all, and recognize that Communism is here to stay and is entitled to equal respect right along side of democracy.
Having lived in China for the past 8 years, I recognize certain limitations on my personal freedoms that do not exist elsewhere. However, I fully recognize the need for these limitations either from a historical basis (religion) or current need basis (internet access).
The Chinese leadership has determined that the majority of Chinese people are simply not mature enough socially or educationally to properly handle certain freedoms. Having been witness to several public disturbances to the social order caused by the most basic of misunderstandings, I can fully appreciate the limitations on personal freedoms and have simply adapted.
I readily acknowledge that there are injustices in China, but name one country where there are no injustices.
In the west we say “Let a sleeping dog lie” or “Do not kick a sleeping dog.” Nixon kicked the sleeping tiger. He should have known better.
In the west we also say “If you create a monster you must either feed it or kill it.” For those who view China as a monster, forget about killing it. China is to big to fail or to be killed.
The solution to the Taiwan issue is really very straightforward and simple. Recognize that it is an internal Chinese matter and get out the way of a Chinese resolution.

I want to write sth about the U.S. Interests in Taiwan.
U.S. involvement with the government of Taiwan (known as the Republic of China or ROC) has its roots in the World War II U.S. alliance with the Nationalist Chinese government of Chiang Kai-shek on mainland China. But while the allied victory over Japan and Germany meant the end of conflict for much of the world, it did not mean the end of conflict in China. For the Chinese government, it meant the resumption of a civil war against rebelling Chinese communist forces led by Mao Zedong. By October 1949, Mao’s forces had pushed the Nationalist Army off the mainland, and the remnants of Chiang’s government fled to Taiwan, an island off the south China coast. While on the mainland, the Chinese Communist Party declared victory and established the People’s Republic of China (PRC);Chiang’s ROC government on Taiwan insisted that the communist government in Beijing was not credible, that the ROC government was the only legitimate government of all China, and that ROC forces would regroup on Taiwan and one day retake the mainland. For the next 30 years, the United States supported this claim with U.S. military protection and over $5 billion in military and economic aid, allowing Chiang’s one-party government (the Nationalist Party, or KMT) to consolidate its position on Taiwan.
In recent days,a series of shows named “Mingchuan Liu” is broadcasted on Channel eight.Liu is the first governor of Taiwan province in Qing Dynasty. From the shows, i can deeply feel that Blood is thicker than water and the citizens of Taiwan and mainland are family members.Taiwan is a part of China,it will finally return to the motherland no matter how much resistance.
When it comes to Taiwan’s problem ,China and Chinese become more sensitive than anytime in such a special times. But a lot of west countries can not underdstand the real meanings that Taiwan has always been a part of sovereign China. As the professor said that the counties should spend more time in comprehending and cooperating with the the sleeping tiger which now wakes up and have enough potential with full passionate power .When I read the above article from my professor ,so many emotions came to minds beacause of his thoughts and wisdoms. To be frankly speaking , American and other troublemakers should read this article carefully and change their ways of paranoia about the growth of China .Perhaps they should indeed mind their own business.
Politics is complicated, at most time useless to me, following the argot of hoopchina (www.hoopchina.com) –drhsr (It means PLZ not to discuss political problem.), I rarely talk about it. I dose not mean that I never care about politics, in case the government makes bad influence to my daily life, I would stand out to fight against it, for example, if they are going to ban the port of BT, or do not allow people to sell doujin contents. Political problem to me is one kind of the problems about my life.
Return to the issue of Taiwan, personally, I have to believe that Taiwan is a part of China (Some philosophy students sometimes do not care about ‘the human rights’ or ‘freedom’.), and once the war breaks out, I would surely stand on my country side. A famous saying on internet goes To invade Taiwan, offering one month`s salary. To invade Japan, offering a life.
China’s reunification of the Chinese nation’s fundamental interests lie.
After the reunification of China, the two sides could work together to complement each other mutual assistance, economic development, a common rejuvenate the Chinese nation. The original problems have plagued Taiwan, will be under the framework of one China be a reasonable solution. Taiwan compatriots will, together with other parts of the country a great country to share the dignity and honor.
For a long time, the Taiwan issue has always been one of Asia and the Pacific region instability. China’s reunification is not only conducive to China’s own stability and development, but also conducive to China with other countries to further strengthen friendly relations. What’s more, the cooperation is conducive to the Asia-Pacific region even the worldwide peace and development.
The Chinese Government believes in maintaining their national sovereignty and territorial integrity of the just cause, will be able to get the world’s governments and people’s understanding and support.
I wouldn’t like to talk about this topic, especially to foreigners, just because it will spark a spirited debate between us. We have totally different countries and culture background. In other words, we have different profits and even we are in the opposite position.
Therefore, when I come to this topic, I would like to agree with Deng Xiaoping. It is too hard for the temporary to address the problem and it is sensible for us to lay the problem aside. So I will lay it aside……
Taiwan Issue is China’s internal affair, which concerns China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as China’s peaceful reunification and the national feeling of all Chinese people. Since Premier Wen Jiabao during two sessions this year, answering a reporter’s question who comes from Taiwan that do not desert our 5000 years’ traditional culture for the politic problem of 50 years, we are brothers and born with the same toot. We express real sincerity to look forward to the day when our country is reunified.
Considering from its economic and political interests, US pursue ambiguous strategy for Taiwan Issue. On the one hand, US claim that they will comply with “Three Communiques”, on the other hand they undisguisedly peddle munitions to Taiwan. In fact, it is the win-win situation to peaceful settlement of the Taiwan Issue for China and US.
Although Taiwan is always belonged to China mainland, but now there are more and more difference between them. So I think we should solve the problem as quickly as possible. However, the US government always puts a spoke in China’s wheel.
Here, I want to say something about Taiwanese of China. Some of you worry about the unification will handicap the development of Taiwan, but in fact there is nothing to be worried. The PPC won’t intervene your finance and currency policy and will maintain a separate currency and customs territory and judicial independence, and Taiwan will still be a prosperous province. And in fact, your prosperity relies heavily on mainland. And we won’t intervene your the freedom of speech, or of the press, not only won’t, but also can’t. Once the freedom has been found, it won’t be deprived, and the history can prove it. So China will only become more and more free. You are Chinese, and you ancestors are on mainland. Please go home.
First I have to say that I am rarely concerned with politics, so my opinion may not be so objective. As we all know, thousands of years ago, Taiwan and mainland were a family. Until now, we can still remember lots of famous stories and people about Taiwan and mainland. Today we are enjoyed in the same culture, the same language and the same belief. But some people of Taiwan ignore this basic culture for the cause of their private desire. So we can easily understand what the USA has done from economic explaining. Nobody will let opportunity gone if it can make your own country benefit. I appreciate you who as an American can view this question in another way. I think, it doesn’t need very long will Taiwan be in the govern of the CCP.
China has been told clearly that the United States adheres to the one-China principle and honor the commitments of three Sino-US joint communiques. For a decade, however, what we have seen was US attempted to incorporate Taiwan under the TMD, sent aircraft carriers closer to Taiwan and sold missiles to it.
Premier Wen has stated that differences between brothers can not sever their bloodties. Taiwan has always been a part of China. People on the both sides of the Taiwan Strait are brothers and sisters. Anyone using Taiwan issue to interfere with China’s internal affairs is unacceptable.
I very support your view ” It is an internal Chinese matter and get out the way of a Chinese resolution”.Why does the issue of Taiwan become so complex this year . I think there are some international reasons.First we must realize that some country won’t to see china unit .IF Taiwan and the mainland unit ,china will become a great country. So they don’t want this come ture. Secondly, I think many taiwanese have no interest in “One Country Two Systems”.I don’t want the war between two sides ,What we should do is just wait now .
I have to say you have the particular vision on the Taiwan problem.Taiwan always belong to China, all of chinese know it.And we also understang if there are no troubles made by America between Taiwan and mainland China,we have already unified Taiwan. It is our the fundamental interests to unify Taiwan, but it seems like the time of solving this problem would be longer and longer. This situation lets me down.
China have already haven the enough strenth to recover Taiwan, but our government hasn’t solved the problem by using weapon because we want Taiwan compatriots to know we have enough sincerity and we just want deal with it peacefully. We are all the same nation,we have the same ancestor,so it is time for us to unify together to ceate the glorious once we have it before. The west should abadon the differences about the ideology to create a better world.
The Taiwan issue is a result of the game of multiple political strengths, that of Mainland China and US mainly, between which Taiwan is only a frail piece of the chess and struggles to breathe among the other powerful camps. Here we confront the most vivid and realest case of political wrestle through out the entire world, and the link here lies in the concept of national interest. For Uncle Sam, the huge commercial benefit of selling so-called defensive weapons to Taiwan government is always actual motivation that drives the Congress to authorize the proposal maintaining the relationship with Taiwan Government. Or else, the assembly lines of the Boeing Co. or the Lockheed Co. would be probably at crisis and the workers standing by the line would therefore face the risk of unemployment. It also applies to the relation between US and China. The second element of the US unwillingness to stop supporting Taiwan government, which is deeply rooted in the tradition of western political theory, sounds like an apothegm: there are not two kings in a same world. Our Uncle Sam inherits it and executes it as a doctrine. He supports those good nations and allies with them like South Korea and Japan, brings rebellions or wars to those nations belong to the Axis of Evil such as North Korea, Iraq, Ukraine and recently Iran, and makes conciliation or compromise with those nations rising but untamed like China. China is so big and strong that US have to cooperate with it while suppressing it. Apparently, the American politicians are excellent students of their teachers of politics and skillful of the political strategies. Meanwhile, it seems to me that the former and the incumbent administrators are too blank-minded to recognize the two-sidedness of the US governments, so that they had and have to tolerate all those illegal resolutions and offensive behaviors performed by the US, since she didn’t and doesn’t find out the key. I believe that the Taiwan issue would still stay problematic before the Chinese governments improve their diplomatic skills and take the same master-strokes as the US governments do.
I can’t agree you more upon the issue of Taiwan. No country has the right to interfere in other countries’ internal affairs. We Chinese people have suffered a lot and are portrayed aggressively , although China is a developing country which has no power to aggress other countries. I am very glad that you have a wise brain which can tell right from wrong and hope more and more foreign friends will can open the eyes, throw the views taked from TV or other else away and find the truth by theirselves.
Now, despite international interest groups have no-uniform opinions on Taiwan issue. But I am a Chinese, I firmly agree with Taiwan is a part of china, I hope every country can advance various issues in line with the objectives of peace. This is the only.
I’m uninteresting in politic, and I know little about these things. So, I have no idea about that. But, I’m touched by the author’s highly appreciated and praised attitude to the CCP’s contribution for the Chinese society and global people. From this, we can see the author’s understand of China. And he is so considerable about the action that Chinese government put on him.
The US tries its best to maintain the status quo of TaiWan .However, the status quo will be breaken in some day ,all of us are striving to reunify the motherland. The future of Taiwan lies in the reunification of the motherland.
The Taiwan issue has always been the core issue of Sino-US relationships. It is difficult for Chinese people to understand that why the United States always interfere the reunification of Taiwan and mainland China. Taiwan has always been a part of Chinese territory. And the Taiwan issue is an internal Chinese matter. What the United States Government’s position in Taiwan issue is wrong. The United States Government should abide the commitments by “Sino-US joint communiqués”. And get out the way of a Chinese resolution. Only in this way can the relationship of Sino-US be more harmonious, and it is also helpful for the development of the two countries.
From this article, I learn something about Taiwan, and I really appreciate the author’s praise for CCP. Undoubtedly, China is playing a more and more important role in the world with its rapid growth. However, China has a long way to go until it is recognized the responsible and powerful country, since there are some weaknesses and deficiencies in China.
Taiwan is one part of China since ancient times. And I believe Taiwan will reunify with the motherland sooner or later no matter how much resistance it has. As to the Americans, I hope they can respect Chinese people sincerely and recognize One China policy really.
Taiwan is an inseparable part of China, which is an unchangeable truth. And the solution to Taiwan issue is really Chinese people’s business. Somebody says that western people care much about their privacy, so why US government want to handle other people’s family problems, even much or less give a hand for Taiwan to separate from China. The behaviors of USA really hurt Chinese people’s feeling and break their promise.
Now China has a great development and Chinese people have the ability to resolve Taiwan issue. We don’t want any so-called “help” from USA in Taiwan issue as well as US government won’t hope other countries engage in American’s race issues, because these are domestic affairs.
We have claimed that Taiwan is one part of China for years, and everyone knows this fact. But why there still are some foreign countries ignore this and sold the arms to Taiwan? The reasons are simple. They not only want to earn profit, but also don’t want to see a powerful China. As Deng Xiaoping said, the only way to solve all the problems is to develop our economy. I can’t agree more with this sentence. I also hope that Taiwan come back to China as early as possible. However, I think now what we should do more is to develop our economy. We could not allow anyone to separate Taiwan from China. We will give up everything we have to safeguard our country’s territorial integrity.
“The US claims to support the reunification of Taiwan and mainland China through peaceful means brought about by the Chinese people. However, US actions belie this claim.” To me, it is a completely new idea for me. Because I heard different views before. And I think every country has its own concern and we should be tolerant about such sensitive problems.
What’s more, I can’t agree more that"The solution to the Taiwan issue is really very straightforward and simple. Recognize that it is an internal Chinese matter and get out the way of a Chinese resolution."
The reunification of Taiwan and mainland China will be a lengthy process. It wiil be solved in the future,I believe. However,it will bring new problem that how do the people from different social system to get along with each other. It’s about not only the ideology but also the reality.
I am appreciated with professor’s position about TAIWAN issue, I gradually understand the real intention of our professor, I think he wants easterners and westerners communicate with each other through the platform. Maybe many of us face the cultural conflict when post our comments on several articles in this web. Although obstacles among culture would be existed for a long time, TAIWAN is a part of P.R.C country since ancient times. It’s not a cultural issue, but a democratic sovereignty problem. China always do not interfere the sovereignty issue of other countries’, at the same time, we can deal with our internal affairs.
Taiwan is a part of China, anyone cann’t separate it from our motherland. In my opinion, the US is gealous of China, for fear that China’s prosperous poses a threat to America. It’s erroneous to sell missles and support Formosa’s independence. We strongly protest the America’s deeds, they shouldn’t insert itself into our national affairs, they don’t understand CCP, the conditions of our country etc.
US can see our country’s behaviors in coping with economic crisis and other international affairs, we help pull the US through to some extent, US is supposed to observe our attitudes in dealing with all kinds of things, they ought to reverse their wrong opinions, and then stop supporting Taiwan independence, to maintain our national unity and social stability.
Actually ,we all know that Taiwan issue is now an sensitive issue to Sino-US relationship. But, it should not be a complex at all, because it is no doubt that Taiwan is belongs to China, the people born in Taiwan speak Chinese, the culture there is Chinese culture too. It not belongs to Japan or the US, it is a part of China but not a independent nation, just like Henan province or Guangdong province. Now we Chinese people dream of China being a united country again just like a mother miss her lost child. So, I think we Chinese should express our thanks to foreigners who support the reunification of our motherland.
Taiwan has always been a hot topic at home and abroad for these years. I totally agree with the author’s opinion that Taiwan issue is absolutely an internal Chinese matter. It’s the fundamental principle of the tricky problem and at the mean time, the key to solve Taiwan issue. The America is another sovereign state that stands for the interests of the American people. Just the same is as for China. I readily acknowledge that different countries have their own interests, but the key point is every sovereign state has to respect other sovereign states especially each country’s sovereign rights which is the premise of being respected by other countries. And it is the premise of World Peace. And Taiwan is the case. Thereby, if sovereign states co-create peaceful environment and then, they can strive for their developments in this comfortable environment. This must be a win-win situation.
Above of all, I do appreciate your positive attitude towards to Taiwan and other things you mentioned in the article. The problem of Taiwan-Strait has been discussing from day to day, and the Communist Party of China and government have tried hard to solve this problem and it has brought much improvement now. However, some countries and people those with ulterior motives always set obstacles to try to stop the harmony and unity of the compatriots across the Straits. Certainly, the situation across the Taiwan Straits has always been closely linked with the stability of the Asia-Pacific region, but this can’t be the reason of stopping reunification.
As to the issue of limitations, I think the situation has improved very much in the past few decades and it will become better and better. What’s more, as far as I concern, the limitations have never bring negative effects on my personal life.
Taiwan is part of China. Chiang kai-shek left for Taiwan from Chengdu phoenix airport one day in December 1949 . Since then, Taiwan has been isolated from mainland of china for forty years. Many people arrived in Taiwan with a broken heart and sad emotion because they had to leave their families, their lovers, their hometowns and had no idea when they could come back . A famous poet in Taiwan once writted a poem“Hometown has been a very very old antique.” Blood is thicker than water. The narrow Taiwan strait cannot separate deep affection of people between Taiwan and mainland of China.
Firstly, I firmly believe that Taiwan is a part of sovereign China, and I also support Chinese government’s policy in Taiwan issue. I throughout think that the attempt of independence is absolutely impossible, because Chinese people and the government will not agree, Even in Taiwan Island, the elites of the Democratic Progressive Party also think it is impossible. However, they will operate the issue in variety of election-related activities, as the relationship between Taiwan and the Mainland is a tool in election campaign in Taiwan. Let us have a look at other countries all over the world including America, most countries do not support Taiwan’s independence, because they understand that supporting the independence of Taiwan will harm their national interests. Taiwan is just a pawn for United States, they just utilize the issue to restrain China, not to support Taiwan’s independence really, For America, Taiwan is only an unsinkable aircraft carrier.
First of all, although I don’t know deeply about the real purpose of the behaviors among the three regions, the speaker’s statement on some extent is objective and justifiable. The fact that Taiwan is always part-and-parcel of China is indefinitely undoubted. For Chinese, any attempt to consider Taiwan as a independent sovereign government is unacceptable. That is reason why we are always indignant at the behavior that America continually sell all kinds of war instrument to Taiwan to either make exorbitant profits or destroy the relationship among three sides. In the present international condition, I can figure out why US have to stand at the middle, but I can’t comprehend why Taiwan authority still strengthens their army to resist China. Maybe this is so called politics, isn’t it? Even Ma Yinjiu is in power, nothing is changed.
EDITOR’S NOTE: HK TV IN MAINLAND CHINA. WHAT A JOKE! COMMECIALS RUN OVER BROADCASTS UNTL THE OFFENSIVE PARTS ARE FINISHED. LOOK AT HISTORY – ANY GOVERNMENT THAT STAYS IN POWER THROUGH FORCE, INTIMIDATION OR CORRUPTION DOES NOT LAST LONG. THE PARTY KNOWS THIS AND THAT IS WHY IT IS TRYING CHANGE TO BE A POPULIST PARTY WITH DEMOCRATIC CHARACTERISTICS. ROME WAS NOT BUILT IN A DAY – CHANGE TAKES TIME – BUT ROME WAS DESTROYED IN A DAY
Certainly, some sensitive things that Martin told us still could not be discussed openly in China today. Maybe the CCP hasn’t been sure enough of itself to keep the stabilization of the Chinese society. Usually it inserts AD when the PHTV which is a private TV station in HK broadcasts some programs of political criticism.
The TAIWAN issue is a historical problem. There isn’t a simple flush way to solve it. Maybe time is a good method to settle the problem. Since it is an internal Chinese matter, it would be a good situation if no other countries get involved in it.
Professor Wolff, I agree with your opinion. I think what you say is very correct. The problem of Taiwan is complex and simple. Why the problem of Taiwan is complex, I think it is because of American. American has too many profits in Taiwan. Because of Taiwan, all Chinese have a strong enemy: hostility. The hostility makes Chinese mainland and Taiwan develop their military strength crazy .The Chinese mainland and Taiwan can use their money and resource to develop their economy, to make Chinese live a happy life .However most money and resource was used to develop military strength. So there is no peace between Chinese mainland and Taiwan. I think that American government is very glad to see this situation ,because Taiwan will cost billions of dollars to buy American’s weapon .If American give up Taiwan ,they will lost many profits, so the problem of Taiwan is complex. However the problem of Taiwan is simple .if American, the most powerful country in the world, can really want world peace, and can really trust china, he must gives up Taiwan. I think if American can really do it, the world can avoid a war .All Chinese will thank to American. The God also will bless American.
Due to some history reasons, Taiwan has been separated from mainland for a long time, but as Chinese civilians in our opinions Taiwan is a part of china which never can be separated, just like a mother will never give up her child. The Communist China has tried its best and taken many measures to let the dream of one China and One Unified China come true, and the china government has made serious and formal warning to those countries or individuals that want to destroy the unification of china. No countries has right to interfere other countries’ internal affairs. And every country must respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty. So according to Taiwan problem, we Chinese can do it well and don’t need others to interfere any more.
Taiwan, a fishbone in throat, a naughty child get lost, a renegade island province that tempts to float away from its mainland China, whatever it would be the name, it was, it is and it will always be a part of China though I know we’d be cautious towards this beautiful hope of present and future tense. Undeniably, a wildly rising number of organized minorities are always there, contending their OWN history as a legal nation.
As my logic goes, if it’s just a reunification of China in getting back its sovereign rights and still endowing Taiwan with a right to govern, it’s just not that tricky though. However it’s never easy when intricacies winded up. It’s been more problematic since America gets into the inner affair of Taiwan Strait and finally comes a triangle of three sides, an equilibrium that’s hard to break at the moment. Three sides? That’s ridiculous! I’m afraid the status quo of the Taiwan is yet to confirm by greater efforts of two sides, but never a business of the US.
Within the strait and outside of playing politics, there’s something we can do. I truly think that the deployment of missiles across the strait is a no-choice alternative and last resort, as for a nation’s highest interest. But it doesn’t mean that we take more account on the territory than on the attachment to the Taiwanese. Given that we are not able to make another history from 1895 to 1945 (periods of Japan’s control of Taiwan), and long periods of self-governance from 1945 till now, the Taiwanese bear little sense of belonging to mainland China from the innermost perspective. Youngsters particularly, are more content and complacent to be a Taiwanese rather than a Chinese, compared to their parents and grand-parents. It’s the point. I hope that we can break the silence by resuming the responsibility of an independent nation and giving back our love to this missing child of more than 100 years. Howsoever, we never need you, AMERICA!!
I’m very glad that Professor can understand and support our policy on taiwan. It is true that I can learn something from this essay. It provides a new perspective as foreigner do. And wish the reunification of china can come soon!
Well, personally I think the fear and paranoia of the US originated from its misunderstanding of China, especially from the misunderstanding of the CCP., as it had went through a period of tension to confront the Soviet Union in the last century. There is a good chance that the country had inevitably experienced a tough time during the Cold War, and maybe it concerns that one day it will have to be faced with another one, and that one would probably brought by China, by the CCP. And that’s why it refused to admit its error,I guess. But the concerns are needless. As Peace and development are the themes in the world today, China is trying its best to develop itself as well as to creat the corresponding stable environment. Its development means no harm to the world but instead encourages the whole world, we have witnessed it from the financial meltdown of Asia in 1997 to global economic meltdown in 2009. The US should put down prejudice and learn more about China, and only in that way can the cooperative relationship between the two countries be more close, and both interest more!
As we all know, the problem of TAIWAN is always a very public-concerned issues in China. These years China has made a lot of effort to revendcation undoubtfully, and eventually turned out in vain. Form the perspective of TAIWAN, to be independent is benefical to its development to some extent, and on the other hand, there is some powerful country in the world is backing her to be independent, so most of them would like TAIWAN to be independent itself. In fact, I have little understanding of politics, but in my own eyes, TAIWAN is one of the part of China, people have the same colour of skin, and the same ancestors, it one part of China,so I hold the view that TAIWAN should be unified with China, but the best way to solve this problem is reunify peacefully, which is good for the mainland of China and TAIWAN.
In southeast China , like Zhangzhou City and so on , there are hundreds of Taiwan businessman. Some of them even have been on the mainland for 20 years.
The downstair of my dormitory are two sisters from Taiwan. One of them is a junior of my department and we are good friends. We are the same only ignoring the accent of mandarin. She told us the former President of Executive Department of Taiwan is a alumni of HIT.
My elder cousin is a citizen of Fuzhou , in Fujian Province , and my sister-in-law is Taiwanese. Their son is already 10 years old.
The CCP figured out all of these without any “democracy” help from the US. The US never give up setting a word in this issue ,and I suspect they just to set fire at our backyard. The reason as follows : There are various civilian activities between mainland and Taiwan held in environment each year . What is more , many preferential policies for Taiwanese on the mainland have been put forward to contribute to friendly environment building . We are not enemies , we are families instead. In the spring of 2005 just a few days after Qing Ming Festival, the president of KMT,Lien Chan who was born in Xi`an took a visit to mainland . He went to Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum in memory of the father of KMT . It is obvious that limits disapper nongovernmental ,and we just wait for a government ceremony to admit this . In addtion , the CCP will not determine to harm any country all over the world since we are friendly for the past 62 years . The US Policy that warn CCP by US missiles is in vain.
After reading this long long article, I feel both angry and grateful.
It is out of question that Taiwan has been a part of China’s territory ever since the ancient times but there are always some countries(western countries mostly, such as America, France, Britain…) denying this obvious fact and trying to separate Taiwan from China. China is regarded as a great threat by many developed countries for its fast development these years and the west is convinced that backing Taiwan’s disruption is an effective way to suppress China. Besides, they’re making a lot of money by selling weapons to Taiwan.
What makes me thankful is that there are also some westerners who disagree with their own governments and support Chinese reunification. Minority as they are, it is a comfort.
I don’t know how to express my idea appropriately. There is no doubt that Taiwan was,is and will be part of China. But the fact that more than sixty years ago Kuomindang retreated to Taiwan and our Communist Party missed the best time to make Taiwan return to the mainland is really an important reason for the present situation.Every country in the world know the economics importance, military importance, location importance and politics importance of Taiwan. They will do the things benifiting themselves most but not benifiting China most out of selfishness.Politics is very complex.I think with the time going on and the whole world becoming more and more complex,Taiwan’s returning to China will become harder and harder.I don’t make comments on that some countries’ attitudes towards the Taiwan issue are right or wrong. But I have to say this is not good,or very bad to China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.Maybe we should take some measures to speed up the pace of achieving Taiwan’s returning.
I appreciate it that the professor has such an objective and positive attitude about the Taiwan problem. The Taiwan problem is sensitive to all the Chinese people. It is a matter of fact that Taiwan is an inalianable part of China. If it was not for the US’s insertion, there wouldn’t be so much trouble. I have a strong belief that Taiwan will return to the mainland China in the near future.
Another point is that in spite of the limitations coming along with living in China, the professor has spoken highly of what the CCP has done in the past 30 years. As a Chinese people,I am really thankful about this. Hopefully, more and more Chinese people can handle the freedoms like many western people do and our country can be more democratic.
China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity can not be interfered by any other countries in the world. It is every Chinese’s belief that Taiwan is the integral part of our mainland. In the past two centuries, we Chinese suffered a lot by occupation. We have realized that our country must be strong and powerful enough so we can not be looked down upon or occupied by others. I really don’t know why there are so many territorial disputes between China and other countries like Japan, The Philippines, India and Vietnam. And most of Chinese tend to solve these problems peacefully.
Now China is playing a more and more important role in economy, politics and culture across the world. We welcome foreigners to come here and to know more about us. And we will find more opportunities to cooperate but not misunderstand.
My aunt’s mother used to be the wife of a regimental commander in Chiang Kai-shek’s army. Not long after their marrage, Chiang Kai-shek was defeated by Chairman Mao. The husband who was leading his army far away from the hometown, was focred to retreat to Taiwan with Chiang Kai-shek, leaving the wife alone in the mainland. Then they have never heard any news of each other for years because of the war, and both of them formed a new family.
Time flies. 59 years later, when China was the hoster countury of the Olympics, they eventually have a chance to meet each other. But they are already the grandgrand pa or grandgrand ma of their children then. How could they face the long lost love?
My aunt told me that they meet each other with a long lasting quiet embrace, acompanied by their kids, no crying and no tears.
So, the mainland and Taiwan are really family. Let the family get together.
Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. We are all Chinese.I really appreciate of your personal opinion.I hope more and more American peple respect China’s sovereign rights, and I also hope that Sino-US can friendly cooperation and maintain the peaceful environment of the whole Asia.
