CROWN CIGAR CHINA

http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=6349264433

This is a machine made, short filler, green wrapper cigar made in Anhui Province, China. Basically it seems like left over cigarette tobacco stuffed into an inadequate bitter wrapper that breaks down too easily. It smokes HOT and must be constantly relit. The ash is constantly falling off and burning holes in shirts, trousers and furniture. Although China does produce other cigars for export, the above is the only cigar sold in some, but not all provinces of China. It is the only cigar sold via the Chinese internet.

It comes 10 cigars to one plastic box. Quality control is definitely lacking. Too often the cigars are old, dry, stale, cracked etc.

However, at 3.5 yuan each (US$.18) yes 18 pennies each, they are better than nothing.

China’s state owned tobacco monopoly has no incentive to improve the product. The government has a high duty on imported cigars for commercial resale. It is reported that the duty applies to more than 100 imported cigars per month.

There is no other choice if you want to buy a Chinese made cigar in China.

WHY CIGARS?

Prior to the Victorian era men and women alike smoked cigars around the globe. In the Victorian Era that all changed. Women smoking cigars was frowned upon because it was thought unladylike for a woman to have a phalic symbol hanging from her lips.

After WW II the cigar small (ette) cigarette was developed for the female market.  Due to added chemicals for nicotine enhancement, men also took up cigarettes.  It became fashionable for women to smoke cigars again shortly after Demi Moore was featured on the cover of Cigar Afficianado Magazine

DO NOT INHALE!

When I first moved to China in 2002  to teach Global Marketing, I did some advance research and knew that in Central China the custom was to gan bei rice wine with lunch and dinner. (Like downing a shot of vodka every few minutes while eating)

For medical reasons I cannot consume alcohol. But in China if you cannot gan bei then you are not a man. I knew this was coming my way so I stuffed a handful of western Churchills into my vest pocket.  When I declined the rice wine invitation and offered my excuse, I was hit with “You are not a man.”  So I explained the history of cigarettes as being developed for women and suggested that my hosts were wimps or wusseys for smoking a woman’s cigarette. (You can see this freight train coming from a mile away)

Each accepted my offered Churchill, lit up and started inhaling. No one took more than a couple of hits before putting their cigar in the cigarette water bowl. What a waste of a good Churchill! Interesting to watch yellow people turn green!

I finished my Chiurchill to the absolute amazement of my hosts. Word got around about the foreigner and never again was I asked to gan bei.

I think China can’t maintaining a Government monopoly.

  • connie zstu 5

To develop some Govement monopolies are need as I do not think our chinese businessmen have the self-control in the front of the tempation of cigar’s great profits even if they know cigar is bad for our health. So some balances will be broken without goverment monopoly.

  • connie zstu 5

PS.I still can not accept women smoke cigars even it has so long history. In fact I hate cigars as a result that they damage my dad’s health.

  • David-ZSTU1

I can not accept women smoke cigars. As to the question,I think China can it do it while maintaining a Government monopoly.

  • Mary ZSTU 3

The cigarette is one does not relate the livelihood of the people profession, if this profession wants a better development to move toward the market economy inevitably. Therefore, I thought that our country will not monopolize the cigarette profession to be very long.

  • sam.zstu6

It’s a progress from a developing country to a developed one.It needs all the people to accomplish this great goal. The day our country becomes a developed one is coming. Then our country wiil take on a new look all over th eworld.

  • KEVIN ZSTU3

I do think that cigarette is just like something you hit it but it’s useful!

  • Bill zstu 6

Like you did,I try to not gan bei in having meeting with other people, like class meeting, friends go out to have dinner, and like you meet in China, they will say you are not a man for not ganbei, but I try not to,because I know it’s not good of drink wine, especially in these condition, you get it one, then you have to gan bei twice……,which make you never stop drink wine,so I told myself a sentense I see on web,it said that “If you are my friend, even drink by water, you are my friend,if you are a wine friend, even I drink as much as I can,you are still not my friend”.

  • Allen Zstu Class2

In my opinion Government monopoly will last some years in China, but the phenomenon will be changed gradually finally in some industries. As we come into contact with the world closer andcloser it is a trend.

  • Helen zstu2

In my view, smoking is bad habit. on average, my father smokes two packets of cigarette per day. Once I tried to persuade my father to give up smoking, but he said smoking made him clam down and more energetic. Although smokers know smoking is bad for one’s heath, but most of them can’t give up smoking for many reasons. There are too many smokers. That’s why the cigarette market continue hot
    .

  • Sam.zstu6

It is a common sense that smoking is a bad habbit. It is not only bad for yor health but also makes a bad influence to others in mental and physical. So giving up smoking is not delayed.Though smoking can give one’s enerage,it do more harms to our health and environment. We can live longer and healthier if we stop smoking. In order to achieve this goal,we join up to persuade others to stop smoking. If we do this,we will have a better day.

  • kitty zstu 8

In China, it does be some kind of annoying that if a man can’t drink, no matter what excuses you take, you can’t success. Almost everyone can’t deny “You are not a man”. This phnomenon get much more worse in Sichuan Province, you can’t even have a time to eat something, it’s all about drink. Luckily that you can take smoke to have some time to make a stop, that’s the reason my farther smoke again after he quits smoking for 3 years.

  • kobe zstu 6

In some ways, smoking can clam someone down and more energetic, however,it will not only do harm to the health of yourself but others around you.so it’s necessary to maintain a Government monopoly to limit smoking.Under the monopoly,we will have better health and beautiful environment.

  • kitty ZSTU 2

I think every culture has its traditional culture.Drinking rice wine and saying Gen Bei are Chinese wine culture. It has a long history since chinese could make wine. But saying “ You are not a man”,it was created recent years.I think it is not a good phenomenon because it can makes a people overdrink which will do harm to him or her health. As to the tobacco .In my opinion, I hate it because the smell is so awful that I can not tolerant it .What’s more ,It can lead a man who often smokes the tobacco to have a lung cancer. So I think we should leave the tobacco far away.

  • Ann ZSTU2

In china, if you purchase commodities from the internet, you must know the quality of the commodity is not always good, maybe the commodity is counterfeit. So you must be careful before you tend to on-line shopping.
Chinese productes are always debased, There are various defects, but in developed country, there are various categories, most of which are hand made.
Maybe few years after, china’s commodity will well in quality.
Smoking is a bad habit, please quit smoking for your health.

  • laura zstu3

I think women should better not smoke or drink. In Western countries there are lots of women smoking and drinking, so naturally their are less healthy when compared with those who not. The number of China’s women who have smoking or alcohol consumption is still relatively small, and we should advocate that less smoke and less wine of life.

  • Jenny PG 4

I think that China has own ways for developing, government monopoly is just one of these. No matter this will be right or wrong in the future, it really had made contribution to the economic in the past years just like the planned economy. Of course, China’s this system is not static, we will change it if we need. And the difficult thing, in my view, is that even if we know that should change, but the habit we have developed for many years will cause great obstacles for change.
Although the speed of China’s development is so high, we should think about the problem –the government monopoly, if we want to catch up with the developed world.

  • Alark PG5

As we all know, China is still a developing country despite of its fast progressing speed. Market economy is not mature enough. SO I think it is necessary for the government to maintaining monopoly in some industry.

  • Billy PG2

Tobacco is bad for your health!!!

  • SamPG5

Deputy director of the State Tobacco Monopoly is Li Keming; he’s the brother of the man tipped to be China’s next premier, Li Keqiang.
    Sorry to know about this.
This is why system seems unlikely to change.

  • Lucky PG 4

As we know , China is definitely a developing country. Our life is much better than before but we still have a big gap compared with developed country, especially in the respect of medical insurance and welfare insurance and so on. Nowadays we pay much attention on our food safety. But before we just don’t want be starving. PS: smoking is very bad for smoker, but it was much more bad for the second smoker. Particularly, if a pregnant woman smoking, there is a possibility for her children was born with defects. My parents never smoke and I appreciate it.

  • Rose PG3

I don’t think China can maintaining a Government monopoly. But china is a developing country,so the
    Government monopoly is unnecessary.

  • Richard_PG_1

As far as I know,it is possible. The telecom operator CMCC,makes largest money and gets most users not only in China but also in the world. Here is the source: http://www.cnbeta.com/articles/152966.htm
Many government controlled companies has the ability to catch up with the companies of developed contries. But it all depends on the fact that we consumers nowadays have to use the ugly and expensive products, not willing to.
If China has a totally competitive environment, just like Pakistan, what will happen?Without monopoly, they have to close their doors.

  • Shelley PG3

In China many kinds of goods monopoly are common, such as mobile phone market is under the control of China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom. We customers don’t have choice but accepting their high and irreasonable price. It is said China Tabacoo gets the tabacco leaf at a very low price from tabacoo leaf farmers. They make a lot of profits. There is no one can compete with them. Because they are the only authority to get the tabacco leaf, anybody who want to sell Tabacoo must get the permission from the China Tabacoo, or you will be in jail for selling tabacoo privately.

  • Susan PG 1

Well, it’s a good question. China is changing for years. Now our policy is reformed for many places. And in some fields the government is not the big boss. But some important fields such as military and bank and so on, for the peace and harmony of the state, our government insisted on to controls them. China is developing. Many things are changing. You can’t ask China to be like every other country, because our traditions and culture are different. Some ways may bring disaster to China, so our government is cautious about the reform.

  • Crystine PG 5

Smoking can be seen as a working way to release pressure, and it’s part of Chinese culture too.People usually give friends cigarettes as gifts in festivals. But it is true that smoking does no good to your health and the smoker’s families’ health.I am lucky to have a non-smoking father.

  • Bailey PG4

You have to know that China’s government is reforming its political mechanism one field after another. Foreign banks, insurance companies, finance corporation etc can be seen throughout the whole country, which is best exemplified the limited measures that taken on government monopoly. As China is a socialist country, the government should take full consideration of all kinds of factors to design fit laws, policies and measures for economic improvement. What should the government do is to moderate and direct all factors instead to limit or tamp down them.
The development of economy can never betray the free market. And the most important thing a country has to do is follow the marketing principles, the competitive system and the law of value. While, it deserves to mention that the continuous financial crisis happened in western society proved that the commercial market can be too free to control, and the macroscopic readjustment and control from government are in urgently need. Because the government can amass the resources and redistribute them to the right place, which can hardly be done by business because their aim is to MAKE MONEY!!!

  • Edison PG 4

Actually speaking, reforms are being undertaken in the Government monopolies. Adam smith maintains that market is an invisible hand. Chinese economy will never get developed as its market is not free and open. We’d better utilize this brilliant hand.

  • Abner PG6

•As we all know, tobacco(or cigarette) is bad for people’s health. However, people cannot help smoking. I think, to develop smoothly, it is necessary for the government to maintain monopoly in some industry at this moment. But I cannot stand the behavior of wemen’s smoking!!!

  • Garnett PG5

I think absolutely control in some important fields is necessary. Although it may results in lack of competition, it is good for national safety sake. However, it doesn’t mean government monopolies need no improvement. They should offer service of high quality and good price to the public, since they are owned by the government. Sadly, most of them forget their duty and take this advantage for profit. It is still a long way to developed world.

  • Vicky PG3

China is a market economy country. Monopoly is very harmful. On one hand, it is not conducive to product innovation, On the other hand, lacking of market regulation, the price is very difficult to balance. To develop economy, we must antitrust.

  • HenryPG6

As we all know, different cigar stands for diffreent statues in China.Millions of people smoke at varies palce though they all know it’s harmful .So far,our govermeng has taken no measures to it ,I think one reason is that the cigar industry can bring more profits.

  • Jack PG4

In my opinion, drinking is normal but smoking is something that I can’t accept. In China, especially in northeast of China, almost everyong can drink. Drinking appropriate amount is good for our health, but there is no good for smoking at all.

  • Jack PG 3

Smoking in public place is banned in China now. But there are still many people smoke in public place! It is hard to forbit smoking in China, because smoking has become one part of Chinede culture! If you want to make a friend with someone, maybe the best way is to give him a cigar.

  • JenniferPG2

I don’t think China can maintaining a Government monopoly.

  • Alex.PG.4

For my part, Government monopoly sometimes is good.sometimes the goverment has no choice but to do it.because China has too many people and the land in China is too big.The goverment needs a lot of tax to feed the people and protect the land.

  • Edward PG2

Developing economy with maintaining a Government monopoly is like using horses to drive a train. It can’t last long. This is a metaphor in the movie Let Bullets Fly.
PS:Neither can I gan bei too much nor smoke cigars, but I still think myself a real man.:)

  • Bob PG5

I think it is necessary for the government to maintaining monopoly in some industry as China is still a developing country.

  • damon pg2

If Communist Party of China maintaining reign us monopoly,do you think there is anyting that it can`t monopoly?

  • Jack PG2

In fact, The world is dangerous.Every country are greedy for their own interests, It is difficult to reconcile this conflict.China’s current half-open state is correct and prudent, Although it is not conducive to the development, But stability is precondition. Some financial group or large corporation are easy to form monopoly to control the Chinese economy, which is dangerous for our country. Foreign economy is not monopolized by the government, But big business. China needs time to be stronger.

  • Bill PG2

Firstly I have to say I don not know whether China can catch up with the developed western country in economic with its monopolistic role in market economy. But no doubt in China most of the top industries are state-owned such as China Nation Petroleum Corporation and China State Grid. These state-owned industry giant contributed to the main part of economy of the country. They pay large sum of tariff annually.Maybe if these financial body are not controlled by the government the economical system of China will become more powerful or not.Actually,The modern times is market economy which is figured by free control of government.but this system is far from perfect, sometimes it still exist some fatal disadvantage which bring national financial crisis. The world had witness more.As China is developing better towards best,I think we will invent a special economical system that will fit our national situation best one day.

  • Joe-PG5

I do not believe this will be changed. All of us know that tobacco plays an important role, providing Beijing’s biggest single source of tax revenue. Our government lives on it.I am no surprised about it. This unique economy mode is called The economy of socialism with Chinese characteristics.

  • Tracy PG3

China is a developing country, and it needs time to handle different types of problems, such as high housing price problems, monopoly and so on. We should believe that the government will handle them well, and it just needs time.

  • Tim PG 1

If China take a full market economy, there will be many problems, such as malicious speculation price, but if the pain can promote the development of China’s market economy
And state-owned enterprises will help to consolidate the position of the regime, but this also created a lot of corruption, I personally hate that.

  • Peter PG 2

I think China cannot catch up with the developed world if it maintains a Government monopoly, which I mean the monopoly which can bring high profit.
Although a Government monopoly may make China gather all resource to develop its economy ,the Government monopoly will bring so much waste that in the future it will hinder China to become a member of the developed world. And the resource of China is not so much.
In the other side, “Power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely.”The corruption which come from the Government monopoly can make the management of a government worse and worse.
So I think the government should do something and should not do something. Maybe the government should be the highway monopoly not the tobacco one.

  • Mike PG 5

China Communist Party will do its best to fight against corruption ,keep reform on every aspect of this country ,monopoly in some economic field is necessary to govern a country with a large population . I know its not good ,but things can not easily changed .I hate smoking and dislike who smokes ,it is a bad habit ,the irritating smoke makes me sick .

  • Billy PG2

I think it depends. The international situation changes all the time. It can absolutely affect the economy. Now we are governed by CCP, there are some achievements, but also some problems.

  • RosePG2

I think that some field is controlled by government is acceptable, but if all filed are controlled by government, that maybe a terrible thing!

  • ShirleyPG6

When I was young,I remembered that my father smoked a lot.In China,it’s inevitable to drink or smoke to be close to each other, especially on business.I’m glad that my father stopped smoking just to keep healthy.Custom is important, but body health is much more important.

  • Clark PG 4

China is in and will remain so for a long time at the primary stage of socialism. In my opinion maybe it’s the best way to develop China’s economy by maintaining a government monopoly nowadays. When the economy of China is on track, the situation will change. The monopoly will be eliminated.
