CROWN CIGAR CHINA

http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=6349264433

This is a machine made, short filler, green wrapper cigar made in Anhui Province, China. Basically it seems like left over cigarette tobacco stuffed into an inadequate bitter wrapper that breaks down too easily. It smokes HOT and must be constantly relit. The ash is constantly falling off and burning holes in shirts, trousers and furniture. Although China does produce other cigars for export, the above is the only cigar sold in some, but not all provinces of China. It is the only cigar sold via the Chinese internet.

It comes 10 cigars to one plastic box. Quality control is definitely lacking. Too often the cigars are old, dry, stale, cracked etc.

However, at 3.5 yuan each (US$.18) yes 18 pennies each, they are better than nothing.

China’s state owned tobacco monopoly has no incentive to improve the product. The government has a high duty on imported cigars for commercial resale. It is reported that the duty applies to more than 100 imported cigars per month.

There is no other choice if you want to buy a Chinese made cigar in China.

WHY CIGARS?

Prior to the Victorian era men and women alike smoked cigars around the globe. In the Victorian Era that all changed. Women smoking cigars was frowned upon because it was thought unladylike for a woman to have a phalic symbol hanging from her lips.

After WW II the cigar small (ette) cigarette was developed for the female market.  Due to added chemicals for nicotine enhancement, men also took up cigarettes.  It became fashionable for women to smoke cigars again shortly after Demi Moore was featured on the cover of Cigar Afficianado Magazine

DO NOT INHALE!

When I first moved to China in 2002  to teach Global Marketing, I did some advance research and knew that in Central China the custom was to gan bei rice wine with lunch and dinner. (Like downing a shot of vodka every few minutes while eating)

For medical reasons I cannot consume alcohol. But in China if you cannot gan bei then you are not a man. I knew this was coming my way so I stuffed a handful of western Churchills into my vest pocket.  When I declined the rice wine invitation and offered my excuse, I was hit with “You are not a man.”  So I explained the history of cigarettes as being developed for women and suggested that my hosts were wimps or wusseys for smoking a woman’s cigarette. (You can see this freight train coming from a mile away)

Each accepted my offered Churchill, lit up and started inhaling. No one took more than a couple of hits before putting their cigar in the cigarette water bowl. What a waste of a good Churchill! Interesting to watch yellow people turn green!

I finished my Chiurchill to the absolute amazement of my hosts. Word got around about the foreigner and never again was I asked to gan bei.

QUESTION: China can catch up with the developed world but can it do it while maintaining a Government monopoly?

I cannot understand that almost everyone knows that smoking is bad for our health but they are still smoking. And I am also confused why China is maintaining a monopoly on the business of tobacco.
Is the government supporting the civilian smoking by supplying them with tobacco or is the government just making a big profit. In my opinion, the government should allow the public decide whether they should smoke.

  • Jerry PG6

Many people say that smoking poses a threat on health. But I do not think so. My grandfather smokes a lot and he is 82 now and healthy. My grandmother never smoked and she dead when she was 70 because of lung cancer. As far as I concern, mood is the most importent aspect to health. People who is optimistic may live longer.

  • Zoe PG6

Everyone knows that smoking is harmful to health, but can’t see this harm intuitively ,as a result, he choses to ignore the chronic hazard in order to obtaining the pleasure of smoking. Our government will never give up the monopoly on the business of tobacco because it brings large number of tax and direct profit.

  • Clark PG5

Smoking is a tradition, just liking having rice, bread and drinking beer. It’s bad for health, but it offers a method to relax and make people feel good, especially for the man, in an unhealthy and luxury way. In my opinion, human race has been on the way to entertain ourselves since science develops further and further, and we’re far beyond the original needs. We are consuming the things nature has given us, and when there will not be any resources, what will we become. Shall we turn back to monkeys?

  • Milly PG6

Differences do exist. But I think China can do it.In fact, the government of China has shortaged the supply of cigar to Chinese. The goverment appeals to its people to smoke less and they control the quantity which results in higher price. It seems that no smoking can never achieve. So is the bai.It is part of our culture. It is good to healthy if you drink just a little. What I hope is that we could make the wine culture perfect by control the amount. At the same time China do need to pay attention to both quantity and quality.

  • Tom PG6

Everyone knows that smoking is harmful to our health. But why so many people still smoking? Some young men think smoking is so cool, so they start to smoke. And some others think smoking can relief the pressures which are brought by their job and living. Once if people learnt smoking, he can hardly give it up. So we must keep away from smoke, and never have a try.

  • SofiaPG1

I don’t think so.I think no industries with monopolies can make an excellent advancement as there’s no competiton which is an important factor to force a business to develop. So if China want to catch up,it has to give up government monopoly, which I think is impossible.

  • Elinna PG6

We all know that smoking is bad for our health. But most smokers can not resist the pleasure brought by smoking. They think that smoking can relieve their pressure. Smoking likes chronic suicide. We should stay away from cigarettes .China will maintain a monopoly on the business of tobacco. Our government would never give up the big profit brought by the tobacco.

  • TimPG6

As we all know China is the biggest developing country in the world. It needs to make every effort to catch up with the developed countries in economics, politics and so on. Cigar is a method related to economical development. China controls the production and sales of Cigar are beneficial to the health of people. They are drugs and I hope that our government had better prohibit the production of cigars. I believe China can catch up with the developed countries, Human effort is the decisive factor even though we are under the Government monopoly.

  • Ken PG5

After I read the passage, I think Chinese government can do well with the tobacco market and the Government monopoly. Nowadays, the world economy is very bad, Chinese government wants to enhance the standard of Chinese economy, so they must catch every chance to strong the country, the tobacco market can provide a large amount of capitals to adapt the development of China, so they won’t strain the tobacco, at the same time, monopoly can easily be controlled by the government, so the officials can control the economy with other aspects so that it can lead the economy to the bright side.

  • John PG6

I had smoked the cigar that made in Anhui before; it is really not very well. But smoking is really very bad; it harms our health very much.
In China, because of different cultures, different weathers and different bodies, cigarette is more popular than cigar, there are also many kinds of cigarette for us to chose, some is very expensive and high quality and some is not, different people may have different chooses.
I think what the article shows us is not the difference of two kinds of countries, but two kinds of habits.

  • Chuck PG6

When things relate to energy ,transportation .information ,national defence etc .Chinese government pretend to maintain a government monopoly .It is a special characteristic of planned market .On the other hand ,it can increase the revenue of government .Not only cigarette , many industries have the same phenomenon .

  • Julie PG5

For smokers, smoking is harmful to their health; for the makers of tobacco, tobacco can bring huge profits. Tobacco is itself a paradox. Some developing countries, in order to protect and develop national tobacco industry, adopted the measures of monopoly management. The tax of tobacco and its products is an important source of the country’s financial revenues. Monopoly management not only makes the tobacco industry get rid of order chaos, blind development situation, but also at the same time can accumulate a lot of capital for the country.

  • Robert PG6

Temporarily don’t say that tobacco is harmful to human body, the income it brings makes a lot of contribution to national construction. Even if we join the WTO, the international market is truly the trend of the development of the tobacco, but our country, in order to protect the profit which was brought by tax, will strengthen trade barriers of the imported tobacco, such domestic tobacco brand will not suffer from high-quality tobacco from overseas.

  • leopg2

China has already been the 2nd largest economy of the world, but it is not a full market economy.More times, the policy plays a more important role in the market, which are called macro-control policies. There is a long way to go through if China want to be a better, stronger economy.

  • johnnyPG5

In my opinion smoking is really bad for our health, it can hurt our lung .A heavy smoker can easily make his lung black. It is not like drinking, if one smoke in the room ,others can also smell it, and it is bad for everyone in the room, a second-hand smoker will suffer much more.

  • Jone PG 6

I think that China’s state maintaining a government monopoly in tobacco can help the country develop in an order and healthy way. Tobacco is harmful to health and there are a lot of profits of the tobacco products. They can control the market and keep it in a better way. But there also are many problems such as the inferior quality and the government should solve them.

  • Owen PG 6

“Smoking and tobacco corporations is a double-edged sword” that everything has its two sides. On one hand, smoking do harm to our health and it has been proved by scientific research. The law of smoking ban has been issued in many countries. On the other hand, tobacco industry and corporations are able to bring great profit for gross domestic product. Every year these companies will turn over amounts of tax to local department of finance. So it’s a contradictory thing. If China want to keep the high pace of development, she must try to find the balance point.

  • Tom1 PG6

Mybe China can not do as well as the western countries in some areas now, but I believe that our country will catch up with the western countries in the future. China’s state maintaining a government monopoly in tobacco is a way for our country to control the market because tobacco is harmful to our health and so we can not give those people, who pay little attention to people’s health and pay more attention to profits, chance to make the market chaos, this is more harmful to people and to our country.

  • Bob PG 6

As all we know, smoking is harmful to our health. However, our goverment never give up the monoply on the business of tobacco, because it brought large sums of taxes and profits. In additional,second-hand smoking has an badly impact on others and our society.

  • Alex PG6

No, absolutely no. It is labors and raw materials which are limited, not limitless innovation that contribute to China’s economical achievement. Government monopoly treats people as machines, which may be effective to manual work, but do no good to creation.

  • David S 6

I think all products are designed according to the consuming power. People in developed country have more money to consume, that’s different in developing country. Even if they can make their choices freely, they have to consider the money. So the factories will adjust their strategy when they find the problem. And certainly we should respect humans’ selection; we should make them have more choice.

  • Nicole-5

Developing countries and developed countries do have some differences. This can be less and less with the process of development. Everything should obey the rule of economics development. If something can not satisfy consumers’ need, of course it will be eliminated. What we should do is to keep the rule of market.

  • Allen 6

Actually I think only China open the maket to private company can this country cath up with developed coutries. As we know, if a company has no rivals, it can do anything it want like rising its price without developing its quality. Of course, why do they have to research how to improve its production? With or without good quality, people have no other choice and at the same time, research costs money and time. So the consequence is no development. The same thing happens to a country, if the country maintains a government monopoly, it has no need to improve its serve. Like China’s internet has the highest price in the world but has the slowest speed in the world and the worst thing is it hasn’t changed and won’t change. So it has to let the market open to attract competetion to improve.

  • rami 7

Mr. Martin has explained the difference between both kinds of cigars in the class ,and my friend try some .i can said that Chinese have so poor level of cigar industry. But it’s still unhealthy and I don’t think I will smoke

  • Daisy6

In the developed world or in the capitalist society , capital is always accumulated in a most suitable way which meets the entrepreneur`s maximum profits . Some one would say that capitalism is unfair and even evil . But in the view of the globle market , profits is created in a capitalistic style undoubtly . In a word , the capitalism is the way where wealth accumulation is developed so as to create new wealth in a competitive environment . A competitive environment means no monopoly as we all know Adam Smith`s invisible hand . The tobacco industry in China is under a government monopoly , and in that given market framework there will be no quality supervised at all . Competition contributs to quality improvement and new technology apperance which pushes the socity forward .

  • Daisy 5

I was just sitting nearest to Martin when he presented the two kinds of cigars to us in class, so I could see them pretty clearly. But to be honest, I didn’t tell the differences of the smell maybe because I don’t smoke. China has been working really hard to catch up with other developed countries especially in the fields of economy growth or hi-technology research. But our country hasn’t paid enough attention to the development of the details such as the cigars.

  • Who knows? China is developing! Quicker then one could imagine! Who can say for sure what is the way out of crisis? At the moment China is doing well winning the crisis. Maybe, later we would use the model of Chinese economic development for other kinds of development, and Chinese marketing as an example of successful marketing system!

  • There is some quistion:
We know pretty well now, if one watches a film with a movie star smoking, it can be charged as the adertisement of sigarettes. It is crazy popular to take the image of a movie star, speak like he or she does, dress like, eat like, and smoke like him or her!
So, should I or we accept the information about sigars Martin smokes as the advertisement of…. What? Smoking, of course! Before the lesson devoted to smoking, I did not know a lot about sigars. I do not want to be involved into theme, but I think some people got interested about what it is like smoking a sigar? Or what it is like compare Chinese sigar and South American ones! Attention! Get interested about addictive things and activities – is the first step on the way to get involved!

  • Nico5

How ironic is this: smoking is bad enough, and yet we are smoking the substandard cigarettes here.

  • Emily5

Developing country and Developed country are different from many aspects. Our country is a developing country. There is still a long way to go.
Economic problems are not all that our country has to deal with. What counts most are the civic awareness, the moral values of the society, the virtue of citizens and educational level. If all citizens show civic awareness and a sense of responsibility to our country, they will promote reform and supervise the government. If everyone knows the correct doctrine of rights and duties, there will be less illegal act and more good things. If our citizens’ education is in a high level, it will be much easy to implement policy, as they can understand the policy well.
In another aspect, being developed is not as good as our imagination. There will be more and more problems to deal with. Then, are we ready?

  • Julia 6

We all know that our government makes large amount of money by maintaining the monopoly of the market of tabacco. So it is impossible for the government to lose control of the business. In the meantime, can China catch up with the developed world in selection, price and quality? I think the answer is definitely yes. Since China is developing more and more quickly and people are getting richer, there are more and more people who need cigars with better quality, ignoring the high price. Once there is need, there is market.

  • bud6

Chinese government does not monopolize the economy in every aspect. It only monopolizes the industry that is crucial to the country. Besides, the Chinese government is trying its best to give the market more freedom to make it more competitive. However, the western countries also nationalized several companies in the financial crisis in 2008. So I think China can catch up with the developed while maintaining a government monopoly.
