With between 600 to 700 students each term, volunteer student assistants are recruited to assist with class management. At least one student assistant is assigned to each class. The duties of the student assistant include establishing an email directory for all members of each class. Throughout the term emails are sent to students on a regular basis, informing them of reading and writing assignments, special events, extra homework assignments, extra support materials and schedule changes.

The student assistants also monitor homework assignments posted on the chinaholisticenglish web site.

Students are called on a random basis, by the student assistants, to ascertain if they are regularly answering their phone in English or Chinese. Students are required to answer their phone in English as a small part of their creating their own English speaking environment.

Each student assistant is given the professor’s phone number to act as liaison and reduce the number of student phone calls.

The student assistants provide an invaluable contribution to the success of the Holistic English Program. In recognition of this significant contribution, Vice-Dean Wang Zhe, Faculty of English Teaching, agreed to provide each student assistant with a formal, bi-lingual, “Certificate of Appreciation” with the official University red chop.
