With between 600 to 700 students each term, volunteer student assistants are recruited to assist with class management. At least one student assistant is assigned to each class. The duties of the student assistant include establishing an email directory for all members of each class. Throughout the term emails are sent to students on a regular basis, informing them of reading and writing assignments, special events, extra homework assignments, extra support materials and schedule changes.
The student assistants also monitor homework assignments posted on the chinaholisticenglish web site.
Students are called on a random basis, by the student assistants, to ascertain if they are regularly answering their phone in English or Chinese. Students are required to answer their phone in English as a small part of their creating their own English speaking environment.
Each student assistant is given the professor’s phone number to act as liaison and reduce the number of student phone calls.
The student assistants provide an invaluable contribution to the success of the Holistic English Program. In recognition of this significant contribution, Vice-Dean Wang Zhe, Faculty of English Teaching, agreed to provide each student assistant with a formal, bi-lingual, “Certificate of Appreciation” with the official University red chop.
THE FOLLOWING STUDENTS WILL RECEIVE AN OFFICIAL CERTIFICATE OF APPRECIATION FROM SUN YAT-SEN UNIVERSITY, SIGNED BY DEAN WANG AND PROFESSOR MARTIN WOLFF, IN APPRECIATION OF THEIR ASSISTANCE WITH THE HOLISTIC ENGLISH COURSE DURING THE SPRING 2010 SEMESTER.

Thanks to the assistant for giving us a hand!
They do so much for us!Thanks!
All of the volunteer student assistants deserve a reward for their efforts!
All of these student assistants should deserve their rewards. They spent their spare time to do service for us,they are really very thankful.
Thanks to my class assistant. She did good job!
Thanks to other class assistants. They deserved the reward!
Thanks to those asistants.I really appreciate their spirits of volunteer.I want to be a teacher assistant if there is a chance in the future.Even though that will be a tough work and a waste of time ,that is a precious chance to improve youself in many aspects.
Thanks. They are worth the honor.
How beautiful this certificate is! Thanks for granting us this very kind of precious honor and thanks for everybody’s recognition. We will keep working hard to help Holistic English Program become more and more successful. Besides, I am very appreciated to have this chance to be one of the assistants of this course. Thanks for everyone again.
EDITOR’S NOTE: VOLUNTEERS WERE REQUESTED ON THE FIRST CLASS DAY. ONLY WHEN NO ONE VOLUNTEERS IS A DIRECT REQUEST MADE AND THIS CAN BE REFUSED AND OFTEN IS.
Definitely, the student assistant have done a good job, them sent us e-mail frequently in such a busy semester and really very polite when then called me, to that extent, I want to give my heartfelt thanks to their job.
But some thoughts occur to me, that is, they are not a volunteer, but chosen by Martin, that is, whether they really willing to serve us, they have to. I hope assistants will not get me wrong, I, by no means, to question your kindhearted work or offend you. But if Martin’s assistant is feel will all by themselves, I believe their work would be more happy. As long as I known, some student are eager to be a assistant, but they don’t ever have the chance to try. But others is too busy to spent enough time in it. That, is the purpose of my comment, can Martin change the way of elect assistant next time?
The asistants are very busy .They do great contribution for our lessons. They ought to get the certificate. How,I partly agree with what “Tony Class 1C” said.Hope the professor can change the way of selecting a asistant. What about changing the asistants every month and give chance to more students?
Thanks to all the volunteer student assistants, they help the school and prof. Matin to give us a good English studying environment. Each time I posted on the chinaholisticenglish web site, they checked my comments. emails are sent to me regularly. And I have received the call from the student assistant to prompt me think and talk in English.
All of the student assistants worth the honor. And I special thanks to Heather and Bob from class 12.
Congratulations to them! I think they are deserved.
Congratulations to all of them. Class 6 owes millions of thanks to Oray and Johnson for their responsibility and dedication.
Congratulations to them! I think they are deserved.
I am very please that they are receiving this award. No one deserved it than them.Congratulations!
For student assistants, they do actually help us a lot. Every time when receiving emails from Martin Wolff, especially when there are more than one email, I feel a little shocked and sometimes annoyed with them. It is kind of disturbs. You can not always ask us to do something. That was what I thought before Martin told us that terminal exam is in 4weeks, and he would not teach here next term. At that moment, I began to recall days with him and his emails. Just think of it, Martin has not done harm to us. No matter enforcing us to answer telephones with “Hello” or assigning so much homework to us, such as ABC day, new L2 friend, and English corner. All that he has done for us is good for us .you must have made progress during these activities if you had practiced them seriously. At least you must have experienced something you never have.
Anyway, just say thank you to Martin and our student assistants.
Congratulations to them!
Congratulations! In this term, when we come across some problems in the English class, we usually turn to those students assistants for help. I also receive some phone calls from them. I think they are rewarded.
Congratulations! And they deserve it!
Congratulations and thank you guys!
Congratulations! All of them deserve it. First when I know that there are almost 700 students in spoken English class managed by one teacher. I am a little worried that how tired the teacher maybe, because besides teaching us in the classes he must check our homework and email us which is a huge task. But after I read this article, I appreciate these volunteer students assistant due to their contribution. Because of their contribution, the teacher won’t be so tired and they can help the teacher to create a good environment to learn English.
I think these student assistants are taking huge responsibilities, but at the same time what they do has told us how much they enjoy the experience. They set a good example for other students.
Well, I just feel a little “envy” toward them and regret my hesitation at the first class when it was volunteering time! Anyway, congratulation them and this lesson will encourage me to grab opportunities whenever they come!
Thanks to the student assistants for their contributions to our English class! Before reading this essay, I did not know they have done so much work for us. The student assistants really deserve the “Certificate of Appreciation” and higher score.
