It is with deep admiration and respect for Deng Xiaoping that we attempt to build upon his philosophy and vision for modernization of China’s educational system.
We are mindful of the wisdom of Deng Xiaoping when he said:
“It’s not that we have too many debates and discussions among persons of different opinions, but too few. Erroneous views may crop up during discussions, but that is nothing to be afraid of. We must adhere to the policy of ‘letting a hundred schools of thought contend’, and promote debate. Different schools of thought should respect and complement each other. Academic exchanges should be promoted. No success in research can be the result of the efforts of a single individual: it always rests on the achievements of past generations as well as our own. Any new scientific theory is a summation of practical experience. How can a new theory be evolved if it is not based on a summation of the practical experience of both past and present generations of scientists, both Chinese and foreign?”

I agree with that DENG’s Philosophy to adhere to the policy of ‘letting a hundred schools of thought contend’ and promote the debates and discussions. “Any new scientific theory is a summation of practical experience.” The same truth is from practicing our English by “L2 sharp L2”. If we go better a little everyday, we will make a great progress. Also, In our daily time, it’s not that we have too much time for English, but too little. We should do more.
Before I state my views, I really agree with this point, science get its improvement with debating, no debating, no improvement. This point is very reasonable, in today’s China, bureaucracy infiltrate into evry fields, all people say yes to what official say. There looks like is a true theory, but we do not find out that this is preventing the development of society. We need to do something to break this situation if we want to get imprvement and catch up with the developed countries.
I think what we need is something called creative idea or talent,and of cause Deng was the very right one.Althougt he had gone,his good idea make us move on.The world changes every second,but the idea will not be out of time. The idea is so hard to pursue for this generation,as we all see that what kind of academic environment we leaving with.This is a capital driven system,and it has left out its way so far away,it is time for a revolution.Big changes must be made to keep it in the way.
I absolutely agree with Deng’s words about debates and discussions among persons of different opinions.In China,there are many people can not hold one’s own opinions once that are different from others,Especially when the subordinate makes different ideas against the superior’s,the student
‘s opinion different from one’s teacher’s,employee’s different from employer’s.Now we must have the spirt of holding own standpoint.Especial for the science,we maybe a scientist in futrue.So we post graduate students would remember Deng’s speak.
Obviously Deng Xiaoping is a great man with great idea. What he said thirty-two years ago is still right now. Only academic exchanges can promote the social progress. No one can get success by himself. Although Deng Xiaoping had put forward his philosophy and vision for modernization of China’ education system, the situation in China has never changed. Our country is still afraid of being discussion by others and tries to protect her shortness.
I think Professor Martin is trying his best to build upon Deng’s idea, but this is not easy. Because all of us are the students of traditional educational system.
I agree with what Deng Xiaoping has said on the work in science and education.
As expansion of knowledge, individual can only master very limited knowledge, but the world is a whole and every thing connect with other things.In my opinion, the different culture and the theory should have more communicate and exchange，such as our studying in the SYSU。Now in China, there are too many students and graduates with high scores but poor abilities. We should take the old but updated opinion Deng Xiaoping had proposed seriously.
I absolutely agree with DengXiaoping’s viewpoint. He who is one of the most influent leaders in China’s history played an important role in modernization of China. There is not exit the two same leaves in the world. Just like everyone has different opinion. Only through communication and debate, crop up the important thoughts and ideas. Letting a hundred schools of thought contend is an essential way to produce good ideas. For instance, you have an idea and I have an idea. If we exchange, both of us have two. In the science, culture field and many other fields, the debate and discussion can make progress to the former. So, our China Holistic English is a pretty good place for our students to exchange minds.
Every Chinese knows that there would be no new China without the Communist Party, there would be no our peaceful and happily lives at present without Deng Xiaoping. Because he had advocated the implements of the reform and opening to the outside world, also, he had come up with the famous idea ‘Whether black or white, can is a good cat catching mice’, those policies having been proved that they all can bring tremendous benefits to the people, there is no doubt that China is changing with each passing day.
Deng Xiaoping is a great man, with his great philosophy, which is important to the reform of Chinese education system, especially for the English education. We should adhere to the policy of ‘letting a hundred schools of thought contend’, make their thought on English education improve with debate. During discussion, confusion will get away, and it will lead us to success.
I not only agree with the the philosophy and vision of Deng Xiaoping, but I also agree with the idea that debate and discussion will promote the theory and science research, with no exceptions of education. Academic exchange is an effective tool for innovation of our thought. Debate or discussion can let us collect different opinions, and different opinions can let us understand and grasp different methods, and different methods can let us innovate our practice, and pratice will promote both theory and education. Thus we should adhere to the policy of ‘letting a hundred schools of thought contend’.
In my opinion, China Holistic English is a good way to follow the Deng Xiaoping’s philosophy. At China Holistic English, we can post comments on different opinions. We can share our experience of learning English with others. The most important thing is that many articles are educative and make us think about the learning way, the problems of aquiring English and so on. Thus, reading, thinking, writing, discussing at the China Holistic English is really a good way to follow Deng Xiaoping’s philosophy.
Deng Xiaoping, a chief designer of our modernization and a great leader, has the same family name as mine, which make me so proud. Ha-ha! Let us go back to the subject we are discussing. I think universities need the spark of ideas and debates which can help you think more and keep creative. University plays a vital role in passing on knowledge, which means itself should cover plenty of knowledge and ideas to build a wide stage for students to learn and create more knowledge. During this process, how we can get more? We should communicate with different people, including our teachers, our classmates and others with ideas. If we have different views, we can even debate on it. When you communicate with someone, it helps you keep on thinking the problem or the idea. Creative thoughts usually come form discussions, which can make you have some unexpected harvest. However, there are not so many students in university get used to discuss with others. They are more used to listen and do, lacking the process of thinking. What a pity that most universities in China facing this important problem.
Many, many years later, people will remember a not tall but brave and strong man in the long history. I respect and admire this national hero. As for this view, I really agree with it. I think it is not only reasonable for the science and education but also have a deeply politic meanings. He opened people’s eyes to look the world. He pointed that the progress of the science and technique was not individual, but was a combination of many people’s effort and sweat. Similarly, the progress of the world was not belonging to one or a few countries, but to the entire world. So china needed join the world. We needed innovation, we needed open our country.
As for China Holistic English, yes, it need many people spend their efforts to change it. It is so complex, arduous and great project that a few people are hardly can accomplish it. we should combine each other together to solve it.
I admire DENG IAOPING so much due to his fantastic contributions and his philosophy that verified by the history development. Concerning about his comments on work in science and education, I believe it is true no matter for today or tomorrow. Things only can go smoothly coupled with different voices to judge the best choice. Especially for a scientific study, unknown world is fully discovered through various aspects of searches. It is also universal for other things.
I quite agree with Deng Xiaoping’s philosophy and vision for modernization of china’s educational system. Yes we shouldn’t be scared of erroneous views. Academic exchange should be promoted via discussion. A new theory would be evolved only when it bases on a summation of the practical experience. It’s all the same in learning English. We can put forward our opinion, and don’t fear for making mistakes, as long as you open your mouth, you are promoting.
Certainly, I can not agree with Deng Xiaoping’s theory more! Some probable reasons may account for explaining what I choose clearly. Difference might make debates, and it is varieties of thought that debates will make, and then great progress can be gained mostly due to summarizing a great deal of thought creating by lots of different persons who may be not from the same region or country. So debates existence among many people and discussion concerning debates are very vital, making it easier to gain success by summation of the practical experience. Accordingly, I appeal to those who are devoted to Academic research to study, discuss and summarize together in order to get further fruits concerning study. In all, I agree with it.
I have a high opinion of Deng Xiaoping, because he’s contribution in process of the independence of china and he’s wisdom in the reform and open policy of china. We all know that everything has two sides; it is very hard for us to distinguish whether something is right or not. So when we decide to do something, we must get enough information about what we are going to do and the result of it. In order to do that, we must discuss and debate is coming. So what Deng Xiaoping said in the article is absolutely right.
Of course I agree with it. The success in research always rests on achievements of past generations as well as our own. I remember that Newton said these words “if I have seen further than certain other man, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants”. That’s unsuspected. Experience of predecessors’ always helps us a lot no matter whether it is success.
And I think this theory is also true to our holistic English. Maybe there are many inappropriate policies but we also learn from those and know that what is bad for us. Of course won’t do it again. Success achievement helps us to progress and unsuccessful experience prevent us to make those stupid mistakes again.
I agree with comrade Deng Xiaoping’s opinion. He is the most influenced leaders in China’s modernization development. In this era of rapid social and technological change leading to increasing life complexity and psychological displacement, no one individual can possibly digest and assimilate all of the knowledge in any given area. As an old proverb said “Each person can only hold enough knowledge to add one small rung to the ladder, but together we can climb to the moon.” So I strongly agree with Deng Xiaoping, academic exchanges should be promoted.
I learnt a principle more as I grew older,that is before you have a true friend you should have quarrel with her/him,and before you have a new idea,you should know both sides of debates.No debates,no compare,and no truth.It is limit to do things as one person,so always we will seach for others help,if they have different ideas,maybe it will be better.Now I am a master,and I
read paper everyday,the knowledge from these papers are from others,they always have different ideas,different opinions,different methods,however，because of these difference,the science has its way.
When we learning English,it is a different language,a different kind of culture,no matter,don’t be afraid,just learn from other’s strong points to make up ourselves’ deficiencies.We can learn from others and they can learn from us,during learning,it will inevitably have culture conflicts.If only we learn English or other things with a learning and a understanding attitude,we can not only learn better English but also have methods to make up ourselves flaws and lack.
Of course I agree with it, because freedom of speech and thinking is very important in every society. Also it is the essence of harmonic society which is hotly talked about now. I think here at China Holistic English we are being true to the Deng Xiaoping’s philosophy because the atmosphere of China Holistic English is quite free and casual. One can talk anything one likes. However in China, we should think Deng’s speech more times because of what had happened in the last year of 80’s?
Frankly speaking, I don’t know much about Deng Xiaoping, but I heard of him ever. He is a great leader of China, and he love his country very much. His philosophy is very practical and emphasize practical results very much, and he led the reform and opening up in China so that China’s economic is rapidly expanding as well as other aspects.
His opinion about the modernization of China’s educational system is also very good and I agree with him about the opinion. The Orient and the West are both parts of the earth and the whole world, we should have a global view in many things.
i do agree with that. we shouldn’t close any new ideas.it’s the same in academic.if we have enough discussions between people with different points,we can sumrize the points and get a valueable one.we should be more tolerance with kinds of opinions,even criticisms.nowadays,it’s a interactive world.no matter what the things,they’re multifaceted.to the country,it’s that;to the academic,it’s that;it’s the same to our english study.we should read more,write more and listen more,besides that,we must communicate with other students,we must discuss and debate.
I can’t agree with Deng Xiaoping more. As we all know, he is the chief designer of Reform and Opening, he’s also a wise and kind person! It’s well known that practice is the sole criterion for testing truth. As a Chemical graduate student, I absolutely admit that academic exchanges are essential. Debates and discussions among persons of different opinions can help us avoid ignorance as well as gain more other knowledge. What’s more, it can also perfect the theory. The words from Deng Xiaoping are really helpful and wise.
Deng is one of the greatest men in Chinese History. Thanks for him, now we have solved the basic problems of food and clothing and working our way toward a well-to-do life. His idea towards education is really amazing, I can’t agree it more. Handling the same question, hundred people have hundred method, but none of them is perfect. We need discussing and debate and at last, building up the best way to solve problem. The second idea, I think for short is to say ”Practice makes perfect”, it’s universal truth as we know. Only talking not acting will not accomplish anything. This kind of action just as an old saying: ” Be an armchair strategist”.
I agree his philosophy. This sentence is very important. “It’s not that we have too many debates and discussions among persons of different opinions, but too few. Erroneous views may crop up during discussions.” In China, for hundreds of years, we cannot express our ideas. What we can do is obey the orders and theory from the authority. Now, learning English in China is still the same way. We listen to the teachers and do what they tell us to do without thinking. It should be changed. We should open our brain and mouth to thinking and debating.
I agree with the views expressed in this article by DENGXIAOPING, Take our view of oral English teaching, some people do not agree with some of the views and some dissatisfaction with the practice of Foreign teachers, But the culture is diverse and inclusive, Educational philosophy and practice of foreign countries is a worthy lesson. As Deng Xiaoping said, “How can a new theory be evolved if it is not based on a summation of the practical experience of both past and present generations of scientists, both Chinese and foreign” We have to do is to continually learn from experience in order to achieve greater progress.
Deng Xiaoping is a great person respected by the whole country, and many of his philosophies are guiding concepts in the process of reform. I do agree with what his said about his comments on work in science and education. It is said that thought and wisdom is produced in the process of argument and communication. Holistic English class is a new concept of English teaching which I think should be extended for a more effective English teaching, and it’s agree to Deng’s concept. Our education system need more voices, different voices to sharpen it.
I have a high Admire of Deng, he is such a great man in our new Chinese history, he has iron though, ambition, and strategy eyes, and he brings china into the road of developing. For his brave heart, china broke out the old thoughts of socialism; try to communicate to the outside word. Then we realize out shortage, and decided to REFORMING & OPINGING. But I think the most important thing he bring to us is, we are not only ourselves, we have to communicate to others, no matter he is foe or friend, transform thoughts with others so that we can improve ourselves
Deng is one of the great men I admire deeply. He was the person who led our country to the modernization. He had Long-term vision for modernization of China, including Chinese educational system. He told us the philosophy that every true theory is based on a summation of the practical experience. We must be Pragmatic. I think Deng’s impact on our country is far-reaching. And the impact will lead our country to better. I always believe it.
These words are obviously and absolutely right. The same way of thinking and viewing the world would not lead to the prosperity of thought, thus culture. The past history can be illustrations, as we all can see the blooming culture of Zhanguo period at about BC2000. The opinions on how to govern the counties are far too different from each other, even hostile, but they created long time-effecting philosophies even nowadays affecting our daily life and culture.
So I am sad that there’s only one kind of ideology, as everyone in China know, that is Marxism, can be allowed in this country.
Fortunately, at least, we can have different voices while having classes. One of these classes, is the well-known China Holistic English.
Certainly I am in agreement with Deng Xiaoping about the education development . I think most Chinese people really admire and respect this great figure . He contribute his all life to the national development . What’s more , his opinion is prospective . In any field ,not only educational system , it is necessary to promote debate . Only more debate , can more creative ideas come out . Educational system needs reform and fresh flood . Any achievement is the effort from many people , not from a single person .
Even a system has developed maturely , it still always needs to upgrade itself . On the whole , we should take actions for some change as Deng Xiaoping said .
I can’t agree with him anymore. You know, the koweledge itself is a process of accumulation. Only base on the others’ previous work can we get our own conclusion. Newton said he just stood on the top of a huge man’s shoulders. There are nobody that whose theory can include all the truth, and there are olso no theory can always be right. What we should do is to absorb the marrows of other theories and make our theory more consummate.
So, we should make more discussions between different schools, and promote more new idears come to be perfect.
I absolutely agree with Deng Xiaoping’s comment on debates and discussions. As a Chinese saying goes, three cordwainers are better than one Zhu Geliang. In other words, two heads are better than one. In my opinion, debates and discussions mean that we think over a same problem together, then we may probably figure out what is ill-considered or where does the problem lie to. We should pay more attention to debates, discussion and cooperation. No one’s success is isolated. We should see the connection between things. And I am sure that we still can learn something from Deng Xiaoping’s philosophy today.

We are divided into many groups. And every time groups would hold different point of views. No right and no wrong. Sometimes, our teacher would debate with us about things surprising as he believed. I can’t agree more with Mr. Deng. There is no person in the world knows everything or make no mistake. Academic exchange can help us to find out mistake and get more new information. Suddenly find yourself is wrong, certainly is not a happy thing, but we should not hate exchange for that, because from the exchange, you know more, that is most important, right? Exchange, or even debate, will bring more energy to an individual, a university and a nation.
Deng is the greatest men in Modern Chinese History. I can’t agree with his ideas more, especial the Opening-door Policy. It let our China holding incredible changing. The opening-door is made for polity, it is similarly for studying. In the studying, we also need opening-door to the another countries, we can absorb the advantages form another learning methods. Maybe it is a shock to our culture, but a chance to ours.

China was feudal emperors ruled for two thousand years, what the emperor said is the law. Other people can’t have different opinions.
Deng Xiaoping’s philosophy asks people emancipate the mind and seek truth from the facts. Just as the open policy advocated by Deng, we should not only open our market but also our culture to the world. Different schools of thought should respect and complement each other. Yes, we should have our own thought on things, not the rigid dogma from other people.
As to us students at holistic English, this philosophy will give us a good guidance to our action. We don’t need to copy others, we should open our mind and have creative thought, do what we think is right, and use our knowledge in society. We should also respect other people’s thought, so that we can learn from each other and make common progress through exchange thought.

Of course, I agree Deng’s words. It is no doubt Deng Xiaoping is one of the most famous all around the world. He pointed out one new road to our Chinese and he is regard as our chief architect of the reform and opening up policy. I appreciate the sentence “any new scientific theory is a summation of practical experience” most among Deng’s words. Lots of his work based on the practical experience, so we must admit it. As for HE, it must be improved on with the feedback of students. I think the HE is good enough to be test. When HE bearing all testing, criticism and judgement, it would be accepted by everyone. I believe this would come true in the near future.

Beyond doubt,Deng Xiaoping is a great leader of our country.He brought not only the faster and faster economy,but also the faith of struggle for us,so we both have material wealth and intellectual treasure.

I can’t agree with Deng Xiaoping’s view more. His theory tells us we need discussion, we should debate everything. Maybe your opinion is not exactly right, but you will give a new angle to see the problem, when we talk about something, if we all join the discussion together, each aspect will be concerned, we can do everything correctly. In our study we also need this view, we need to discuss with teachers and classmates a lot, then we can find problem and solve it by better way. Especially our country need this discussion a lot, we are opening our doors and reforming everything, we need debate so that we make few mistakes. I hope we have the spirit of discussion everywhere!
I quite agree with Deng Xiaoping’s philosophy.We stand in need of creation.In our education experiences,we obey our teacher,our parents,the eldership or other people who have rich experiences.We always obey,but seldom suspect.It is why we pay much attention to creation in education in recent years.As Deng says,it’s not that we have too many debates and discussions among persons of different opinion,but too few.It is the habit we formed when we grow up,we don’t have many oppotunities to pose our disagreements.What we need now is to relax our mind,to promote individuality of one’s own.At that rate,we will have more debates and more creative ideas to help ourselves to be improved and bettered.
I think Deng Xiaoping is one of the greatest men in the world, I can’t imagine how China would like without him. Maybe like North Korea, where people can only use computer in their dreams. And he is born in Sichuan province, just like me, we are all proud of him in my hometown. Speaking of his idea of educational system, I can’t agree more about it. In my opinion, the reason of human society can improve century by century is the disagreement. Because we disagree with something, then we can improve it.
I cannot agree more with “it(success in research) always rests on the achievements of past generations as well as our own”.
Just take our dean for example. Xi-Ping Zhu, dean of school of Mathematics and Computational Science, handed in a “Complete Proof of the Poincaré and Geometrization Conjectures” with another Chinese mathematician.
This matter tell us a story that, sometimes success is from teamwork, and on the base of the great success finished by someone in the past. Maybe there is still some geniuses can success on their own. But to most people, using the treasure from the past is good way to success. So academic exchanges is no doubt important.
I agree with Deng Xiaoping’s viewpoint about disagreement.
It is common that there are different opinions among the same question or debate. Students should be allowed to have diverse points, and it would waken their creativity. We even don’t worry about whether it is right or not, because the correct theory is often proved after practice, and the error would disappear. As the comment of Deng Xiaoping mentioned:”any new scientific theory is a summation of practical experience.”
If we only study the academic by a single individual, our view may be narrow and not all-around. The subject would be developed among different views.
Deng Xiaoping is a great man. I can’t agree more what he said. What he said “it always rests on the achievements of past generations as well as our own ” makes me think of the education system now in China. I think at some point we do make a little progress, but still not enough. The problem must be settled, but it takes time and experience. It makes me think of Deng’s famous quotation “wading across a river by feeling the rocks”. I think the future will be bright through our effort.
Of course I am agree with Deng Xiaoping’s opinions. At the same time, I think the past 30 years has proved what Deng Xiaoping said is right and it is a good idea to put the opinion into our English study. If we just take English study as a subject, we will never get anything from it. English is a technology, only when used in practice, can we know how to make it worked better for us. Holistic English is a newborn thing in the new circumstances. It gives us chances to use our English and affords us chances to discuss in English. Every time we take part in the discussion about the holistic English, we have already benefit form this special teaching method.
