I’m NOT Lovin it!

I’m NOT Lovin it!

I am a post-graduate non-English major at Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China.

I am required to study English for one more semester. I do not want to study English. I am only doing it because it is required by the university. I will never need to use English after I graduate. I rarely attend class, never do the homework and frankly do not care if my English improves or not. When I do attend class I sit as far away from the teacher as possible to avoid any participation in the class activities.

Some of my classmates feel differently. They know that English is increasingly important in the job market. They are highly motivated to study English because they realize that with English they can earn a higher salary. These classmates never miss a class and complete all of their homework assignments. They always sit in the front row and constantly volunteer for participation in classroom activities.

Some of my classmates study English because their parents expect it and we Chinese do what we can to please our parents. They approach English study with a “so-so” attitude and their English capabilities are “so-so.”

Tell us your story, what is your attitude towards the further study of English?

Frankly speaking, I felt a little nervous when I knew I have to study English for one semester. I thought maybe I would feel scared and bored with English from then on. I really don’t know whether I can spend all of my energy on the English classes every Monday. “Sitting as far away from the teacher as possible, never participating activities in the class and rarely opening my mouth to speak English…” I must admit that I had also thought like above. But just like some classmates, I’m also aware of the importance of the English, especially for my future career. So at the beginning I try to bring up my motivation to attend the class.
But after I had the first class on the first Monday of this term, there was a small change in my mind. One of the things that the teacher had told impressed me a lot is ”Here is the campus. We allow you to make mistakes. Others may laugh at you, you may feel losing face, but who cares? Everyone may make mistakes. But you will make a progress after you correct them.” I was deeply motivated by these words. As I know I’m a lucky dog for still having the opportunity to study in the campus. What’s more, whenever I have trouble with the English study I still can get the help from my teacher and classmates. It’s a good idea, isn’t it? Though I may spend out all my energy and time on every Monday for the further study of English, now I won’t fear it and won’t quit it. Because I think all of the efforts I have paid out are worthy. And when I look back for it, I will enjoy this hard but meaningful experience in my memory. If the study of English is predeterminated, I’d choose to join my classmates and teacher in the class. Just enjoy it.

    Change Our Attitude to English
My feeling to English is complicated, which I can’t simply say I love it or not. I believe lots of students hold the same opinion. As a kind of language, English sounds dulcet. As the most popular language in this world, English is widely used in everywhere around us. The significance can never be denied!
However, most of us have found the same thing, which is “it is uneasy to master English, to speak fluently without Intermittence, to listening without any difficulty, to writing without 冥思苦想.” In China, we are required to learn English since our primary school, or even in our kindergarten time. Some people have joined different extra courses to improve their English. The truth is we make little progress after such great efforts, which really upsets us.
What happens? Learning a new language is the process of Inputs (reading and listening) and outputs (speaking and writing), as my senior English teacher said. Only the real, useful inputs can help to improve our skills fully and basically. Traditionally, I would take exercises-stuffed teaching method, doing plentiful exercises, listening to different English programs without choice, take courses in English training center. I take it just a course I have to master in order to get beautiful scores in every exam. The attitude determines the height. Change our attitude and change our ways to learn English, take it as part of our daily life. Whenever we are, eat, sheep or even dream, we think in English.

Frankly speaking, when I was young,I was told that good command of English effectively help one acquire an promising job and enjoy a lucrative life. During the past two decades, encouraged by the open-up policy of Chinese government, an increasing numbers of foreign corporations have swarmed into china, the most potential and biggest market in the world, with the purpose of upvalue their hot money. The excellent working condition and the lucrative income magnetize more and more ambitious young people. Obviously a man proficient in English will have a great advantage over his competitors in seeking and maintaining work at Joint Venture. Insipired by the lure of material benefit and mental satisfy, many people take huge pains to improve their English ability. On the other hand,as a graduate student, we can never put too much emphasis on English learning.Beacause we can use the indispensable tool to search and suck the most advanced science and technology in the world.

As far as I am concerned, the matter is not whether important but how to really grasp it.In fact, for most students,English means 3 “re”—repeat, recite and remember. So,if the boring learning method can be replaced by some creative and unheard-of one,I think all of us will love it in the deep hearts.

In a word, the tendency that English lead the world toward internationalization and globalization cannot be hold up. Failure to recognize this, I believe, means failure to embrace the future.

    I’m loving it
    I am a post-graduate non-English major at Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China.
I’m lonving it. Why I like study English, there may be following reasons:
First: when I was a high school student, watching Hollywood movies and listening foreign music was a pleasure for a heavy burden high school student. At that time, I watched many films, like ,, and so on. Ten years ago, a boy band named westlife was so popular, I like their music. The interest is the most important motivation for me to study English!
Second: if you want to go to college, you must take part in the college entrance exam. That exam concludes English. English worth 150 marks! If you want to go to famous university, you must get high marks.
Third: when you look for jobs, speaking good English can find good jobs easily!
Although I missed the first class due to airplane delay, I have confidence to study English well. Wish having a nice time with you, Martin!

The Story of My English Name

I have been studying English, and speaking Chinglish for more than ten years. Professor Martin is the fourth teacher for my oral English lessons. The former two is Chinese, the third one is an England little handsome young man, Reza.

Before, we were asked to pick an English name. But the teacher did not care about what name you chose, and at that time, most of the English name of my classmates came directly from the movies they watched, as well as the textbooks, such as John, Max, Bill. I am not saying these names are not good, of course they are. But the problem is so many people picked names from the small English Name Pool, so a few of us would use the same name. The first time of my oral English lesson, I wrote “John Chen” in my Name Card before me. When I looked around, there were eight other “John” and five “Bill” there. So I had to change. However, all the names in my mind were already chosen. And this situation really got my poor teacher, a little girl just graduated form a normal university. Finally, I got my first English name as John C, followed by the first character of my family name. The other two Johns who shared the same family name got their name like “John CA” and “John CB”. By the way, the first oral English lesson only lasted for 3 times. I thought the teacher did her best in order to open our month. But as to me, I did not know what should I say if I open my mouth. Of course, the input that time was so limited was one reason. The main reason was we do not used to say English.

The second oral English lesson held in Maoming No. 1 Middle School, the best high school of my home city, Maoming City, Guangdong Province. This time, an Australian teacher Ken showed up. The name picking process was a lot better. I took Max as my English name. He gave a lot advice on our English names, and told some stories about these names. For example, he told us the story of that John the movie The first Blood. I still took John Rambo as a big hero. In college, I came across Reza; after a try to change my English name to Scofield, I still took Max as my English name according to the suggestions by Reza. The days with Reza was fun, sure under great pressure. Now I like the name Marco, I just like it simple and respect. Changes will unlikely happen.

    I am a post-graduate non-English major at Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China.
I am required to study English for one more semester. I always like studying English since my first year in junior school. I really enjoy the process of learning so I learn English without enforcement. I use English in classes or daily life at times after I graduate. I attend class every time, finish the homework on time and try my best to improve my English. When I attend class I always sit with my classmates in order to take part in the class activities.
Most of my classmates have similar ideas to mine. We know that English is increasingly important in the job market. As a result, most of us are highly motivated to study English because we realize that with English we can find a better job. We seldom miss a class unless there is something urgent and complete all the homework assignments. We try to sit next to each other and constantly volunteer for participation in classroom activities.
Some of my classmates don’t like to study English because their week English basis. They do want to express themselves without difficulty in English but it takes much more time and energy to catch up with other good English learners. As a result, they would feel uneasy if they are required to participate in English Class activities.

The author mentioned is quite a common phenomenon in our studing of English.Frankly speaking,I’m also afraid of English.I have leanred English for more than ten years, but I still can’t communiate with others in English.I still clealy remembered one day when I was walking in my campus a foreingner came to me and asked:”Can you speak English?”He looked as if he couldn’t understand Chinese,so he need someone who could speak English.I still remember I was so neverous that I even couldn’t say a word at the moment, what I could do was only shaking my heads heavily and say “No”!How awkward I was! Unlike the author,I really do not hate English,I’m trying to improve it.But it is really hard.As Mr Wolff said,I’m feared with English not because I hate it but because I’m afraid of loosing my face. I may have strong accent of my hometown,so I’m always feared of speaking English. But actually,I really want to study English, just don’t know how to do it well.I think I need some help.

  • From my perspective, English, as an important skill nowadays, is playing an more and more important role. If you desire to make some improvement in English, you really need to spend much time and energy on it . As we know, learning a second language is not an easy thing. However, everything deserves its value. Thus make your firm decision, and do little by little, then you will find you stride a large step in English!

Without question, English become more and more important in our lives. In my opinion, English is a necessary tool for an excellent person in the modern society. So I want to master English well all the time, but unfortunately my English level is not good enough. I’m always too shy to speak English aloud in the public, and too lazy to do reading and writing extensively. From now on, I should follow the Professor’s advices and take part in the class activities actively. Just as Professor Martin said, read more, listen more, write more and speak more English.

With a good English I can talk to more people, and have more informations expand my view.and I think have a more beautiful and full life.

I was born in the countyside and I have started learning English since the junior middle school. Despite, I try my best to learn it, but my English always poor and it become one of the worst subject, especially in olral English. Since then, it become one of the difficult things in my life. Four years ago, because the English is poor ,I almost did not make it a famous university. During my undergraduate peid, I do well in all the other asppects of my life, but in English I was poor, despite I try my best to do it, I once had wanted to give up the idea of it. Nowadays I hope I can do it well with the help of my new excellent professor Mr Martin, and I want to work hard to learn it.

I have been learning English since the junior middle school. In my first English examination, I did not very well, so English couldn’t become one of my favourite course. Scince then, I look learning English as a hard work and couldn’t find any fun in it.

Although I was not good at English, I had to learn it very well. Only in this way, can I become a student of a famous university. Since I was in the university, I have never learned Engish seriously. So untill now, 10 years after I begun to learn English, I have not gotten any improvement in English, especially in oral English.

I am a boy, but I do not like performing and singing. I do well in all the other aspects of my life, I always work hard to try to win, but in English I can’t overcome even a little obstacle. But I believe I can do it with the help of my new excellent teather Mr Martin. I will not laggged behind.

I start to study English when I am a pupil,. I begin it with memorizing words, It is really a painful work., but for my final examination of English I have to finish this. During so many years study, I still think my English is not enough for communicating with the foreigners. Isn’t it sad to hear this? Learning a language is to form a habit of this language. I am boring with the endless English tests. That makes no sense. Maybe in my future work English is not necessary and I am not so interesting in studying English. I just wanna my English ability can satisfy for my daily life. I think it is important to learn the English culture if one want to master English. But we have limited ways to experience the English culture except movies and books. It is the biggest difficulty in my study.

I am a graduate non-English major at Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China. I have a different opinion with the author. Although we don’t major in English, it is necessary for us to master it, for English is very important in these days. As is known to everyone, China is having an increasingly close relationship with the world and more and more foreigners come to China for business or for a trip. If one would like to enter the world’s top 500 enterprises, or even the big Chinese enterprises, he or she must be proficient in English. In my opinion, English will be the basic skill one has to master in the future and we should work hard at it. For me, the most urgent task I have to take is to improve my spoken English, so I’ll be an active participant in classroom activities and practice as often as I can.

When I were in junior high school, I were good at English, but just those exam things, and I were very poor in my oral English. After becoming a college student, I really wanted to change this situation, however, I were afraid, afraid of making mistakes, afraid of being laughed at. This situation nearly lasted two years until my foreign teacher came into our study life. He let us know learning English is for communication, and encourage us to join in his class. We played games in class, in playground, and we had parties, movie time, dinner time and so on.
Now, although I still a little bit afraid, I will try my best to join and enjoin the class this semester. Because I know this is a good opportunity to improve my English.
By the way, thanks very much to my teacher .

Before I went to class on Monday, I heard of a lot of things about how strict Mr Wolff is, and I felt nervous about it. But when I finished the first class, I thought it will be the most wonderful experience in my English study to attend this required English course. Just like the other classmates, I am also the guy who is eager to learn English but is too shy to open my mouth. Although I practice a lot in reading English aloud in my dorm when I am alone, I still feel nervous to speak English faced with people. I just need someone to push me even in a harsh way just as Mr wolff do. And I think I will do great in this course and enjoy being absorbed in Holistic English.

Personally I love English very much. Since the first time I get to know English , I fell in love with it. I kept spending a lot of time on studying English , never stop.
When I came to collage , I found my oral English was very poor. However, what confused me most is that I couldn’t express all my feelings with others fluently in English though I can get high scores in my exams. What’s more, my pronunciations was not correct, which makes me hard understood. I was so ashamed about poor English. So I determined to improve my English.
I talked to a friend about my confuse, whose English is very great. And she really help me a lot. Since then, I begun to watch English movies and listen to English songs. Once in a while, I will chat with my friends in English.
Day by day, my oral English was becoming better and better. I’m very proud of it. Now I still have a long way to go. No pains, no gains. I’m confident that I can overcome all the difficulties come to me. I’ll try my best to make it perfect.

  • Emliy Class 3C

After reading it ,I have something in common about it.Because I don’t like English very much. But I really know it is very important for us no matter in study or work.So I will learn it seriously as possible as I can.And maybe I will get some fun in it and even more like it .Because I found my teachers were very different from those before.

Exactly speaking,I agreed to the author’s point.I don’t love studying english, and I always follow the idea as english is needless for me when I join my job.I’m not ambitious,No eager to have a higher salary,my only hope just to own a stable job and a perfect family.so learning english for me seems useless.
But I never give up making my great efforts to study english.there is no purpose in it,no stress from my parents .I never allow myself to miss every english class or uncomplete the homework.I think all this maybe just come from my studying custom developed earlier.I always believe that the duty of students is just studying, and they should work them hard to access their lessons.only this can they feel worthy of themselves.

  • francis class 3c

Well, I do like English or any other languages, and I would like to say I exactly love American culture rather than the language itself. U know, in China, traditional English class always teaches grammar, vocabulary, and something for passing exam. It is boring always.
I’d like to have lessons about cultures, as Superman, striptease club, local collection, even the dark side of US. I hope professor can open a window for us to know what you have seen in your trip during the world.
One more, I learn language not for money, I am just for fun and communication.

  • Ben Class 1C

As far as I am concerned, it is not because I have to study English, but because I want to.I enjoy the fantasting process that I make mistakes when speaking a foreign language.Since I have been naked,I won’t settle when I am on the right way in my life, and I won’t give up when I am doing what I love.

  • Richal Class 3C

Well ,you see ,English learning has been a big problem for many students including me and my classmates for a long time. Jusr take myself for example, I have leart English for about eleven years since my middle school life. It’s indeed a very long time, but still, I am not well in writing ,to say nothing of speak it fluently .This is really a headache problem.
When come to the further study of English, in my opinion, the most critical is treating English as a tool to comunication but not just a subject that student required to pass. So, as we can see, the only object for English learning is to use it freely.
Meaures should be taken to get the goal, on the one hand , the school can provide some facilities or places to create the environment that student can practise their oral English. Such as English learning cineme,English corner ect; on the other hand, the student should attend as more English activities as possible, by fully paticipate in these activities, not only they can enjoy themselves at the same time their English level will be improved.

When I saw the mail from Professor Martin I was really sad. Because I know that I can’t finish the homework as well as the other classmates, though they may not perfect in English either. But in view of the practical need of finding a good job, I decide to work hard in order to improve my poor English. There is an old saying that practice makes perfect, now, let me do it.
First, I should say I like English very much. I love the differences of all the countries on this planet, and I want to know more about this world. In my idea, English is the very key I need to open the doors of those cultures. Besides of this, there is another reason. My mother is an English teacher in high school. When I was a little girl, I have already known that English is a language said in some other countries. It sounds like singing. From then on, I’d like to speak English as fluently as my mum.
Second, I have to admit my English is poor. Someone said “your mother is an English teacher, so your English must be very good.” But they were wrong. Yes, she gave classes to all of her students, but you know what, for this reason, she didn’t have time to teach her daughter. So I make alive myself. When you read this passage you must find out that I am a poor man, and most of the time I’m hungry.
It’s my story, there must be a lot of mistakes I didn’t realize myself in this passage. Please tell me when you found it. Thank you very much.

I’m also a post-graduate non-English major at Sun Yat-sen University. Now my major is finance, and I think it is a very popular major.
When I was in my primary school, I have begun my English study. At first, I think it was a very difficult subject, and I even thought that I could not learn English well. But this situation had changed during my middle school, I met a very nice English teacher, Miss liu ,who is very patient for us. Under the guide of Miss liu, I found English is very interesting, and I regain my confidence in learning English. So I was not afraid of English thereafter.
When I was in my college, I passed the CET4 and CET6. Very luckily, I got the chance to take the oral English test ,and I have take a try. Although I got B level at last, I think it was a quite interesting experience.
I love watching U.S. TV drama, I think it is a very interesting process to know about American culture and improve my English.
I always know that learning English is a long process, you can’t look forward to speaking fluent English overnight. So I think I will take my effort to learn and practice English.

  • Johnason Class 3C

Well,I think it is very hard for me to say whether i love English. However,as is known to us all,English learning is an imperative for chinese students.Faced with fierece competition in the job market,we could gain advantages only if we had certificates like CET4 or BEC.So we have no other choice but spend much of our time on English study.
Personally speaking,I don’t hate it.I have been studying English like other subjects.By countless repetion,I famialised myself with so many english words and by taking exercises,I was able to pass all kinds of English tests. As a result,I only acquired mute English, just like most chinese students.I can’t speak English fluently and I can’t express myself in exact words.
Maybe it is a tragic story, but I don’t lose faith in English learning. I have laid a solid foundation for the further study. And with perseverance and dauntless spirit, it is possible for me to have a good mastery of English. Most important of all, interest is the key.Maybe it is the right time for me to foster the love for English.Just as the saying goes,English is not a subject you study a couple of hours a week…It is something you live 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

  • Sally Class 3C

In my opinion, I love English, since I know it is important and useful in our daily life. However, I am not good at it, which makes me sad. In the past, I might persist studying English for quite a long time, such as two weeks or more, and then it was neglected for about many days. And when I returned and wanted to go on with my English, I found that I was not familiar with it.
So I think the most important factor for me to study English is to have the right attitude towards it. English is not just a project, it is a tool, which can be used when we walk, think, sleep and even bath.
I am looking forward to master English better and better, it is not because it is Martin’s course. As for me, it is of great importance. There is an old proverb, “Practice makes perfect.”, I will keep learning English, and try my best to improve it.

  • Wendy Class 10C

When I saw the e-mail from Professor Martin, I feel a little sad. I like English, and I also know how important the English language is, but no matter how hard I tried, rarely rewarded I found. I tried four times to pass the CET-6 in the past four years but all failed. You can tell how hopeless and helpless I am.
When Martin mentions the love in English, I interpret this as learning English needs the input of emotion. Languages that someone proficient in could become part of the body, just like capable hands that you can freely use. I desperately want to own such hands, not just a tool for further job.
I was very fond of English when I was enjoying my junior high school lift in a remote town. I still remember the first exposure to English. As the bell rang, a middle-aged woman came in with a smile and said hello to us .The language she spoke was so pleasant to the ear and complete different from us all. At that moment I just thought English was so interesting and I was so eager to learn it well.
This continued until the first day of the senior school in the city, when I was distressed to find that the teacher’s pronunciation was very different from that I got from my previous English teacher. English, suddenly made me feel very strange and scared. In order to correct pronunciation, I spent much time on English. Studying English became load on my mind.

    Gradually love it
I have already study English for many years.Unfortunately I cannot learn it very well.I cannot speak it fluently and communicate with persons in the publice. However,I would like to turn it into better! Because I want to speak perfectly and get more chances for my future job.
Since I came to Sun Yat-sen University,I urgent to search the place to enhance my oral English, fortunately I find the English Association and make many friends there. So I learn that it is not difficult if you really love and commit to studying. Maybe you can get a little surprise from learning it!

  • Jasmine 10C

To tell you the truth, I studied English just for the reason that I could make a remarkable achievement before, including admission examination, end-of-term examination, and so on. Because I believed I didn’t have language talent, and I wasn’t interested in studying a second language. So I’ve laid a “so-so” foundation by this time. Totally, as Professor Martin says, I studied English just for being required.
However, as time goes on, I realise its signficance. At the same time, I’m sure that with a good command of English I can adapt to internationalization much more. So I’m pay more attention to learn it, especially when I’was a junior, I had a thinking of studying abroad at one time. Therefore, I learned at New Oriental School in order to pass Toefl test.
Now, I feel so lucky for the sake of having some lessons during graduate studies. And the salient point is that I’ll be taught by a humorous and strict foreign teacher again. Therefore, I’m looking forward to my graduate English classes and my improvments this year.

  • Jesscia Class 10C

Always I know English is important ,but when I know I must take the course this semesterr, francky ,I was frustrated .I like doing the examination of English, the scores of my writing-English are not bad,but I do not have a good command of English in speaking or listenning. The more I want to gain, the worse thing I will get, I do not know how to explian it.I want to practice my oral english eagerly.
In my middle school,my English teacher often gave us something listenning test preparing for our examination, but never for the speaking, beacause we didn’t have any foreigner English teacher.Such thing went on,when I was admitted to the college,I was beginning to give up listenning and speaking.I was shy and lost the courage to say ”hello”to the foreigners I met in my university.
And from then on,I didn’t read or listenning, not to mention the speaking.but now I want to regain it and I am looking forward to I can get it this time.

There is no doubt that English is one of the world’s most widely used languages. People use a language in one of three ways: as a native language, as a second language, or as a foreign language.
Hold an attitude of embracing everything just like ocean containing hundreds of rivers. Because human brain has such a function of processing language materials automatically, it can produce some useful language information when materials have been accumulated to a certain extent. It’s natural you want to speak when you’ve heard a lot, and also natural you want to write when you’ve read a lot.
As one philosopher said, everything has been done in a natural way, and then success will come when conditions are ripe.

In my opinion , English is not just only a course for our postgruaduates who have to take but also a skill for us to must master to survive in the moden society.
Maybe someone will say “Take it easy , it’s just a required course and if we do what our teachers ask to we can pass it afterall .”I agree with it in part but not all . As a student in such times , all things we do have already been planed by our parents or the education system , but shall we even ever think it over that after we past our student identity and become adults who are busy in finding jobs, no one will plan our lives and we must decide our future by ourselve and be responsibility for our every choice at the same time . If we don’t master a good skill or some unusual abilities which make us to be different from others , how can we live in the world that is competing increasingly fiercely by ourselve?
There is no doult we must have a good command of some skill , and the one I consider first is English . No matter we treat it as a good skill or just a communication tool it’s useful and helpful for us to be out of common , which is the nearest approach to improve our capability . And now there is a chance for us to study English better , why don’t we cherish such a rare occasion and study it well ?

I realize that there is much value in mastering English; Meanwhile, frankly speaking, I don’t very like to learn it.
I suppose that the value of mastering English has nothing to do with earning a higher salary. First, if you want to earn high salary through that way it demand that you are very good at English, which is, generally speaking, impossible for a student who doesn’t major in English and have been receiving a English educating paying mainly attention to reading. Second, I think whether a human being live a happy life is independent of how much property he/she possesses. However, mastering English result in two benefit, the one is it can acquaint oneself with the mode of think behind the western language —— it is a kind of mode of think that brings about the abstruse and profound philosophy, the democratic and liberal political system, and the science; the other is that it would do us help in reading foreign documents in regard to our major.
Though, learning English is very tiring, I love leisure and don’t like anything that demand hard-working.

I never have such new English learning experience before. It is really wonderful.Thank you ,Professor Martin.
I have been learning English since my junior high school. It has been about 10 years till now. Thinking about my 10 years of learning English, I feel a little regretful in some degree. My English teachers placed little importance on our pronunciation and speaking skills. It seemed that we studied English specially for the university entrance examination.
I felt extremely shameful, so I seldom spoke English ahead of people, especially my familiar friends. I even didn’t have the courage to read loudly in my dorm. I know I was wrong and I will try my best to correct it. Indeed I should practice more and seek every single chance to improve myself.

Actually speaking,I am love English in my high school, because I always could gain excellent score and I think English is easy to learn, that teacher just care about our score. Score means everything.
But when I went to the college, I found that my English is very bad. I just can learn and writing, I couldn’t speak English even answer the one who asking the way to me. That made me very embarrass. That’s why I felt very upset when I found I have to study English for one semester.
But I realize English is too important to ignore, It has much to do with my study、career and future. So I make up my mind to attend the class. First of all, I should change my attitude. And I will get fun from look English movie、television and study.

In my opion, maybe study English is a tough experience for part of Chinese students . Many of us have been learning English for more than 10 years ,but we can not use ENLISH ,so we sometimes feel boring to learn the foreign language .As a postgraduate ,we are require to learn English better than before. we shoule try our best to improve our English listening ,speakingand writing , especially in oral English. As a old saying says: no pains ,no gains. I believe If We pratice oral English more frequently , and we will success in learning English. Keep moving!

  • David Class 2C

In my opinions, English,in today’s China, is not just a language for communication with other cultures, but also a kind of skill for career development in almost all industries, therefore ,English-learning has its special role and meaning in our life, which is more and more popular and important.

I started to learn English in my junior middle school, where the environment and conditions was not so good. I didn’t like English much then and I didn’t learn it well, although I was told again and again and I knew that, English as a subject firstly was very important in my future’s study. This situation hadn’t been improved until my senior middle school.

I have been keeping to learn English in every part of my study life, and even in my university, English is still a compulsory course for all of us, and the books for some of my other courses are required to be English-version. In a period of time, I spent a lot of time in practicing my oral and reading English by reading news, and eventually I got a better scores, however, scores doesn’t mean everything and I don’t feel that I have improve my English skill since I have got a higher scores.

This experience make me realize that , in most time, I just consider English as a course or a skill, but in the essence, English in itself is a language, a communicating language, which should be used to express personal thoughts, show private emotions, talk with others, exchange ideas. In a word,English is life different from Chinese, which should be felt not be learned. A language stands for a kind of life in understanding the world and exchanging things with it. It is the right way I think of to face with English learning.

According to the reading material, the student thought it useless to learn English. He argued that an excellent skill on English would not be helpful of finding a job. What is more, he thought that he won’t need to use English after he graduated. So what is the meaning of learning English now? This is the same question as I want to know.

Last Tuesday, the first time to have an English lesson on my post-graduate days, I heard that English was money. The professor told us about one of his student, with a fantastic skill of English, got a better and better salary after he graduated. Although it is a nice and true story to encourage people, I think teaching or using English in my future life isn’t a good way.

As far as I am concerned, learning English presents me with both benefits and troubles. For one thing, in order to improve my English, I have to spend time to read, to listen, and to write in English. And it will occupy the time I read the books on my own major. For another thing, my major is not a hot one that could easy to find a job. If I am good at English, maybe it would be an opportunity to get a better job.
In a word, I will try my best to learn English well.

I began to study English from I was a pupil. But because I was quite young that time, I didn’t realize the importance of English. I thought that teacher was jusr teaching us something interesting. So I didn’t care about it so much. Luckly, I had the second chance to learn English. When I became a junior school student, the school required us to study English anew. This time, I learned it so much that I become very good at English. After I entered the senior school, I was less interested in English again. The reason is I didn’t like my English teacher. I felt that she didn’t attach importance to me at all. I was less and less unconfident. I wanted to give up almostly. Maybe my English teacher found I was a little different, she talk to me on her own initiative for several times, and told to me I was quiet excellent in fact. She told me English is very important in our all lives, and only we learn it hard can we enter a good univernsity. The precondition is we must love it sincerely. Now, I am here, I will never forget the words my teacher said.

I told myself happily that I didn’t need to study English anymore when I pasted the CET-6 finally. I didn’t want to work in foreign company,so passed the CET-6 was enough, I thought.
But it’s wrong. When I fould that I must have the English interview of graduate admission exam, when I fould that the textbooks were English, when I fould that all job advertisements required “Good speaking and writing in English”.But the most important event that let me realize I must study English seriously was that I will have to study English for a term! If not,I will fail the course!
I really think that my English is very very poor. I find it’s hard to remember the English words, then you can’t improve you skills of listening, writing, reading and speaking. I’m also afraid open my mouse just as Mr Wolff said. Confidence, interest and perseverance are the things I lack,I will try my best to improve my English skill. Luckly, Mr Wolff’s class isn’t boring.
    Maybe I can succeed!

When I read the material above, I feel so sorry of the student. There has been much controversy over learning English in the past years with each party owning convincing evidences. Obviously, the student in the passage is not in favor of studying English. He claimed that he studied English only because it was required by the university. Maybe it is really too useless to learn English in his live and even his future. But to me, I am eager to improve my English as the following reasons.
First of all, my major is comparative literature, which requires good capability in English reading. In my daily life, I have to read a lot of academic passages in English. And I am also interested in reading foreign novels, which will be better if I read in English.
Second, one of my favorite things is to travel. I began to travel since I was 8 years old. From then on I have already been to almost every provinces of China. But I have never been to a foreign country yet. So far I hope to visit London in 2012, because of the Olympic Games. It will be much more convenience if I speak English fluently.
What is more, with English I may be able to live a better live. I have learned piano for more than 10 years, and played bass for about four years. I have a dream to deeper my musical capability. So it will be a wonderful choice to go abroad.

Actually, when I was young, I was interested in English, and always had a good mark. However, as soon as I entered the university, l lost interest on it, and was afraid to get in touch with it. And now, as a postgraduate student, I must take a good attitude on learning English so as to improve it well. for example ,I put the “economist” as my computer’s front page ,read at least two piece of news every day ,further more , borrow some English books about my major and try to study them .Then ,watch TV on English channel or English movie on the computer as long as l have free time ,at last ,find a friend to speak English together so as to improve my oral English . through this ,I hope I am not afraid it any more.

It is such a long story about my learning English that I am afraid I can not give a complete version to tell you all the joys and sorrows in details. But it doesn’t matter; I’ll give you an outline.
Maybe I don’t have a good gene in language learning, I think. I fell behind most of students in the first semester of English class; although my father had found a tutor for me two years before us Chinese children have English classes. This phenomenon had last for two years and my place became the last several ones in the class. Fortunately, in the third year of I have English class I met a good teacher, Mr. Wang. He had some strict requirements for his students, and I had a painful experience in that year, but that make sense. My English skills had been promoted and I caught up with students in the average level. However, good things can hardly last for long. After I said goodbye to Mr. Wang, my English skills almost didn’t have made any progress in a period as long as 6 years. I knew I am a sluggish person. If there isn’t a good teacher, I can’t find my way in learning. Luckily, I changed my previous views eventually because I had made obvious progress all by myself after long time stagnation. That is the last semester in my collegehood, I decide to take the GRE. I don’t know why I made such a decision, maybe just for fun or maybe I felt that since I’d been suppressed by English learning for such a long time and just want to find a way to abreact my frustrated moods, so I took it. Then I spent more than 10 hours a day to memory the complex words, and force myself to read, to write. No wonder, it is a tough course. But all the tough experience feed you and makes you become stronger. Although I hadn’t got a high mark in GRE, I find my way of learning English. That is taking all your efforts to conquer the difficulties you faced.

For a post-graduate,I have studied english for ten years. But usually, what we need is reading-skills,not oral practice. Most of us study english just for exams. In my opinion,we must change this attitude, and learn it by heart.
First of all,we must be aware of the inportance of english study.Specially, our major is finance,we must read english-papers and talk with foreign professors.
For further english study,we should try to form english thought. In the daily life,we should watch more english movies, listen to english songs, and look for more opportunities to practice oral english.

Frankly speaking, when I first walked into Mr. Wolf English classroom, I was very nervous. That is because my oral English is so poor that I have no courage to make myself speak English loudly. Until now, I’m still a little worried. But as is known to all, English is a useful language and an indispensable tool in our life, which plays a more and more important role, especially in the modern society. Just as Mr. Wolf said, English is money. So I really want to speak English well. Therefore, from now on, I decide to take English as a part of my daily life, and encourage myself doing more reading, writing, listening especially speaking English.

  • Silvia Class10C

Honestly say, I want to improve my English, as I know that it’s very important for me, both for the communication with friends and finding a good job in the future. However, it is a pity that my English is not so good even though I have learned it for ten years, because I didn’t persevere in my study. I am very glad that there is a new chance to learn English now. I think I will cherish this chance and do my best to give a boost to my English.

  • Miya Class10C

What is my attitude to English? Actually, after I passed the CET-6, I thought that I would not have to learn English any longer. Once upon a time, I felt that I had already gotten rid of the English, then I have given up on learning English. Since that, you can image how astonished am I when I saw the English courses on timetable this semester. There are not only reading and listening courses, but also oral English lessons, which are my weakness. Frankly speaking, if there are alternative, I certainly will give up the English lessons. C’est la vie. I have no choice.
On the opposite side, I don’t cast doubt on the importance of English. Although I am a post-graduate student of Department of Chinese Language and Literature, I have to read some academic articles written in English sometimes. If my capability of English reading can be improved, I will be much more relaxed to go deep into my major.
Comparing both benefits and merit of learning English, I know that the advantage is more significant. Now I still feel a little nervous to participate the English courses, especially answer questions in front of all the classmates. I hope to feel better and better in the future English lessons.
