I’m NOT Lovin it!
I am a post-graduate non-English major at Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China.
I am required to study English for one more semester. I do not want to study English. I am only doing it because it is required by the university. I will never need to use English after I graduate. I rarely attend class, never do the homework and frankly do not care if my English improves or not. When I do attend class I sit as far away from the teacher as possible to avoid any participation in the class activities.
Some of my classmates feel differently. They know that English is increasingly important in the job market. They are highly motivated to study English because they realize that with English they can earn a higher salary. These classmates never miss a class and complete all of their homework assignments. They always sit in the front row and constantly volunteer for participation in classroom activities.
Some of my classmates study English because their parents expect it and we Chinese do what we can to please our parents. They approach English study with a “so-so” attitude and their English capabilities are “so-so.”
Tell us your story, what is your attitude towards the further study of English?
I suppose I like it, if not totally crazy about. Learning to speak English well may be one of the best thing I can do to improve my life. It would be fun to have access to information that other people cannot get, talk and write letters to interesting people that others cannot communicate with, impress people around me whenever I opened my mouth, make big jumps in my career and leaving others miles behind. English is not only useful, it also gives me a lot of satisfaction, and makes me a more powerful, happier person. I can get all this if I speak English well.
As a student,I have studied English for more than ten years.During the ten years,English for me is the ladder to success.So during a long period of time,I don’t like English,and it’s regarded as a burden for me.I can’t abandon it ,because I know it’s necessary for me to get a good a job and live in the world.
But now,I have changed my mind. What we have learned is not only a language but also the culture behind the language.Now for me ,the most imprtant thing is how to communicate with others in English.So I will read,write and speak it more to improve my English.
The author’s view, in my opinion, is too radical. As globalization has become the inevitable trend of the world, it is necessary for people living in every country to learn English as their second language. Unquestionably, the international communications are happening in every area, and it has been a undeniable fact that English is widely adopted as a common international language. Therefore, a person, no matter he/she engaging in what kind of jobs, must learn to speak English，provided he/she is a person of great enterprise. However, the author claimed that he didn’t need to learn oral English well because he would devote his life to scholarship. I think that he absolutely misunderstand the trend of the scholarship. In modern society, being a scholar no longer means sticking in a close environment, paying attention only to the old books. Quite contrarily, scholars must walk out of the small library, they must communicate with others, and they must participate in the international academic meetings, sharing the achievements of scholar from all over the world. All this needs fluent oral English. Unlike the author, I have felt increasing urgency to learn oral English well.
For me, English just like a tool with which we could communicate with different people. Meanwhile, learning English could also help me pass some examination, by learning it, we could know some different custom of other countries and nation which can open our eyes, and give us some special experience. So why not learn English well and give us another pair of eyes?
According to me, I’d like to attend English class and involve in the activities of studying English, it make me feel like the host of the class which give me so much joy.
In my opinion, English is a skill we must charge. After listening to Mr. Wolff’s lecture, I know English can help us earn more money. But I was not like English very much. Furthermore I’m afraid of English, especially the speaking. Most of the time, I’m embarrassing to speak because of my poor accent. Though learning a second language is not an easy thing, just form the example of me, the interest is very important. If we don’t have, then we would take in as a boring task. These days I feel deeply about the important of English, and really want to study it well. So from now on, I would try my best to enjoy English, and do as Professor Martin said, read more, listen more, write more and speak more English.
First I want to say, the author who has written this passage is good at English, at least at written English. I appreciate this.
Second in my opinion English is a tool, a bridge. It is a tool to get information, a bridge to communicate with others, a bridge to connect with the global. It is a necessary tool, without it we will fall behind.
Third, for me I am not so interested in English but I have never hated or feared it. I learn English by reading, movies, songs or so on. I like the style of interesting English, just enjoy it. think about that when you can read in English you can read the newest knowledge in your major you can watch basketball or football commented in English. Amazing, isn’t it?
And I want to say I really appreciate Martin’s class. His spoken English is pretty beautiful, maybe the best way to improve your spoken English is to communicate as more as you can to a person whose speaking is really nice just as Martin. And I really appreciate his way of practicing English in a friendly environment.
Chinese students are required to learn English from junior school or even primary schools. At that time, we do not have the opportunity to speak English because we live in the Chinese world. We are just learning English in order to pass examinations.
When I entered university, I began to have time on the Internet,also have free time on a foreign website. It is said that 80 percent of the webpages are in English in the world. We can find more information in the English website. If we are proficient in English, we can access the world’s largest video site Youtube and the world’s largest SNS website Facebook. We get to know people around the world and to learn more things.
So, I think learning English makes our lives more interesting.
Honestly speaking, whenever English language must be used on some occasions , there is a deep ache in my heart, from the time I started to learn English to the time I finished college English courses. On last Friday evening, our professor gave us a wonderful lecture which impressed me a lot. For the first time, I was immersed in a pure-English atmosphere .I didn’t even notice what the professor said in detail but his oral English is so excellent that I just take it as an art— the special style and the humor owned by a speaker, the paralleled sentences, the elegant gestures … All of these are my dreams , I felt suddenly that it seemed to me that I was inspired. The temptation of influent English is really calling me to be awake along.
Unlike the author,I love to learn English.From the high school I have been interested in studying this subject.Those teachers who taught me English impressed me deeply,they bring me to the enviroment of English,I was really spending more time on it.But disappointedly,after the second year’s study in my undergraduate school,I have nearly discarded it,whether or not it is for the reason of my decreasing interest.Now I’m a graduate student in the Sun-Yetsen University,GuangZhou which is a city embrace all kinds of people:Americans,Europeans,Africas and Asians.The most useful tool for them to conmunicate is English,many things we do and many words we say can’t simply neglect the English,I am so regretted for the past few years that leave my English aside. There has been only a few months left for me to find job,time passed by so quickly that I must spare no efforts to promote my poor English for my future life.
So,from now on eat, drink, sleep with English everywhere and everytime.
I think that English is a tool that can help you learn more knowledge and get more information. I have only just passed cet 4, before my undergraduate time, I have studied the books which are in Chinese, but now all of my textbooks are in English, so English is more and more important to me, slowly , I am more and more like the English, because it really helped me to do a lot of things I had never done, I will try to learn English!
English is money！I cannot agree with it any more! There are two main reasons for i learning English.The first and the most important,I love English.When I first listen it,I feel English is a beautiful language.The pronounce of English is melodious.
It was the first time I learned English systematically at junior middleschool,I made great progress in grammar and vocabulary. Just as you say ,we lack the english study enviroment .So we could just practice our oral English through the scene-communication an oral lessons and English coner eachweek.Frankly , I never take part in some kinds of oral english pratice initiatives. As a English I like foreign teachers pretty much,cause I could hear local American accent and English accent.Though my oral English is not very good,I have confidentence in improving it.
The second reason is that English is really inportant in our morden society.No matter whereever you go,whatever you do,you must be able to use English to communicate with somebody.
I was born in a country side and I started to learn English when I was in the middle school. At that time, I tryed my best to improve my English only for getting high scores in the examinations. My teacher in the middle school never payed any attention to improve our spoken English. Less practice led to my poor oral English.
But now ,as a post-graduate student,I deeply feel that oral English is so important. As a world wide used language, English plays a more and more important role in the process of globalization.We have got more opportunities to communicate with English spoken people,face to face. So no matter how high scores we’ve got in the examinations,it does not mean we can do well in the communication.Our poor oral English would lead the English spoken people can not understand us correctly.
So I am highly motivated to learn English now,especially oral English. I have high expectations on this course, and I will try my best.
English study is a long ,special and inefficient process for me.When i was only eight years old,i was send to English Class by my parents,and they told me that English is very important,useful in many aspects in your future life.Though i didn’t know how important and how useful in my life,i studyed English very hard and often got teacher’s praise. When i was in grade 1 in junior middle school I had learned all the lessons,i got high score in each exam without any english study.I thought my english is good enough and stoped studing english from then on.But when i was in senior middle school,especially in grade 3.I found my english is so poor that i can’t say,i can’t write,even i can’t read smoothly.I found my classmates who have good english often see english film,read english newspaper and listen to the english songs.I got to know that interest is the source to study english not score or just as a simple tool.
Frankly speaking, I don’t like English very much. Sometimes I feel it’s boring for me. I was forced to learn English to pass English tests at different level. In school, I should learn my education major which put a heavy burden on me; what’s more, I have to spend time on learning English. I feel very tired and sometimes I regard English as a nightmare. As I haven’t concentrated my attention on English study, my English is poor. Many people always say that learning English has a bright future, because the society needs English. In the study period of Master, I also find that many professional literatures are written in English, if I don’t know or know little about English, how I should understand those foreign articles. Nowadays the society competes very fiercely. Though English is a tool, a person who master a foreign language skill is to some extent surpass other people who do not speak English. Now I should correct my attitude towards English and make a good effort to improve my English skill in the aspects of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
When I was a freshman, my teacher told us: the most important thing during the university is studying English, high salary depends on good English. I think the teacher is extreme to a certain extent, but I have realized the importance of English when I was young. Learning English is not just for tests, but a way to improve the comprehensive quality. Learning English is not a kind of burden,but a way to connect oneself with the external world.Many classic literature are written in English and 70% of the world’s scientific publications are published in English. So we should improve our English to better understand our professional fields.
I have learned English for more than 10 years,but my English is just so so .I’ve been trying,but not hard enough.As the saying goes: interest is the best teacher. I used to learn English because that is what I should do,but now I love English from the bottom of my heart. To learn English well, a set of scientific learning method is indispensable.I will follow the teacher’s method: read more,listen more, write more and speak more. I will try my best and I believe where there is a will there is a way.
Whoever is eager to improve his life quality should strive to acquire English as much as possible. Because to get more information from the outside world, to understand the people of other countries better, to enjoy the art of a foreign country to a larger extent, you must have a better grasp of the English language. So no matter how strongly you don’t want to learn English, it is necessary to do so. As we know, English is money. And I dare to say that English is almost everything. For money can give us lots of things. And English can bring us fun、knowledge and so on besides money. That is why I lay so much emphasis on the importance of English. And that is what I want to express from my bottom of my heart.
So how to find the best way to improve our English？To different people, there will be a different answer, I think. This semester I will strive to search for the most suitable way of acquiring English for me with the help of the teachers.
Mybe I’m the same as the author,I am a postgraduate non-English major at Sun Yat-sen University,too.But I am different from the author,I study English just because I like it .As matter as of fact,my English level is not good.So I hope that I can improve my English level by this semester’s English study.
In my opinion,it is very important to study English.Firstly,English is the major international language and the most widely used languages of the world. Hi, I`m Juan.H.C and this is my story.
When I entered the junior middle schools, since the first few English lessons, I just sat on my seat waiting for the class over. I didn`t take any note, didn`t listen what the teacher said, I do some reading on my own in my tiny corner, all that made my little world, which seems separated form the surrounding. Anyhow, I hated my English teacher, and she didn`t like me too. Since that, I became weak in English. And this is my story, only an old story about a harsh teacher and a poor student.
Arenas, who has recently got into trouble of being prosecuted for holding guns without permit, sad in that advertisement :‘Instead of sitting there being bitter, I just practiced, practiced. If no one believes in you, anything you do is a positive.’Yes, he is right. However, even though we had a bad day, or all the things turn out wrong, we could still carry on, without make anything back to usual. Just as the saying of an exam tips—Once meet a problem that you can`t solve, leave it as it is. Until now, my English is still so poor. What about my life? So far so good.

When I began to study English ten years ago, I was told that English is very important. I always want to make friend with some foreigners, but have no chance, because my original specialty is computer but English. Last term I spend my most time learning English in order to past the exam ,CET-6.Just now I get the mark, I don’t pass the exam. I am so sad, unhappy.

No one has the right to make u do the thing u dislike.To learn english is not for our parents,our teachers or our money we have paid to the school.Without english,we can also live well.If u are intrested in english,just go on,u may feel well when u find many interesting things,and maybe u will get a better job because of the studying of english.
If not,do not feel scared.It is just a attitude to study something,not about your life ,your bread,or your girfriend.Just be yourself,no one knows whether u will be better in the future if u speak english better.If u donot feel well when u see others are doing their best to study english,u could do something else.And what u should do is not to read the english books which u may think are rubish,but maybe to do some studying tothers may not be good at.
Now I am required to study English for this semester as a post-graduate non-English major at Sun Yat-sen University.In my memory,most of the time we study English just for the need of school examinations,though we all know the importance of learning English well.It is a common view that grasping English is a must,espeaiclly when we facing the current job market.
I always try my best to study English well from my first time of learning English.And I was able to get satisfied marks in the exams.However,my English was only confined to class and exams.I hardly have any chance to put it into practice.Maybe I was too lazy or maybe it was the Chinese language environment that made me unconscious of practising English.Of course I know I will retrogress gradually if I continue to ignore it,including speaking,listening,reading and writing.
So,as to my attitude towards the further study of English,I will start from the simplest,that’s to say,try my best to open mouth more and communite more with my classmates in English.Enjoy to losing face!
English songs make me smile or cry, and hollywood’movies greatly widen my horizon. I can get the academic news on that front in international journals,such as Science. In one word, english is charming and important to me.
Frankly, one or two years ago I dislike english. I thought it is boring to recite words and phrases. As a result, the scores of my cet-6 is terribly low. However, I think I fall in love with english now. Maybe it is because I find english is interesting.

Evelyn’s Little Comments
After reading the bitter complaints of my fellow counterpart, it really makes me start to think about the ENLIGSH itself and the stories within us. Hopefully it would be not be boredom but a delicacy of enlightenment to the person in great trouble of English.
When myriads of Blond hair and blue eyes greet you like “Nihao” or “Chi le mei?”, it’s sort of like weird for us Chinese to respond like “hello man!” or “How are you doing?” Then a confusing question may naturally arise, “Why do we have to learn English since Chinese may probably be a UNIVERSAL language?” Aha, at the very beginning I wanna be neutral-minded and first share a stream of little stories with you guys, of course it’s within English and me.
Back then, the debut of English in my childhood is neither glorious nor enticing at all, but a little bit like a boring game of kids. Ridiculously, the first time my Mon took me to a MARY(Native Canadian English teacher), I don’t know what’s this trip for, not to say that I have a the basic knowledge that English is a UNIVESAL language. The only thing I could possibly remember is that the amiable MARY’s giving English names to a bundle of kids showed up there. What makes this experience nasty is that I found the name she gave to me was a nasty “Sally”. “I don’t like Sally!!” That day I shed my tears in a hidden way. Oh, what a poor baby! The dead volcano surely burst out into a strong unwillingness to go to MARY again. Not until the fourth year in elementary school I resumed a pretty pleasant experience with English never for the silly not-so-pretty-name reason but that English itself sounds effortlessly sweet. Did I go off topic? Don’t worry. I’m just saying that English’s debut to everyone’s life differs so great and that I am still feeling lucky that I’M LOVIN IT. Of course it’s not the kind of fall-in-love-at-first-sight thing. So, if you have an unpleasant experience with English, that’s not a big deal at all, who knows if there’s any slightest chance of resumed romance with this OLD LOVER after so many years of so-called TORTURE, for whatever reason many the same as mine.
Then it comes to how I nurtured this lovely little relationship. Like many others, we’ve been together for give and take, fourteen years. I love him for long because English is not a monopolistic lover that asked for promises like “You are the only one”. He enables me a large circle of other intimate friends like art and science. Even when I’m reading the Focus of the original version, that my focusing on scientific fact that a diamond-featured planet is discovered and forgetting English the language itself will not be a problem for my little lover. Still, he’s everywhere on my bookshelves, under my pillow and even in the slip of my tongue. With his confidence in our relationship, he also tell me to be more interested in what he convey and where his real virtue is, but not necessarily his magnetic voice always. From then on, I defined my little lover English to be my lighthouse to get me easier access to a broader landscape and seascape out there, some fairylands that Chinese can not get me to. Like, it’s fantastically interesting that I can understand the insights of people murmured from the other side of the world on the website of 8billionothers.
As our ties progresses firmly and sweetly, I turned back to the contradiction thing I proposed in the very beginning, referring to whether or not to pick up English. Well, it maybe self-evident at this moment for I beg you not focus on which is UNIVERSAL, or why should we have to take English courses even now. After all, Kipling’s saying of “East is east, and West is west, and never the twain shall meet!” shall no longer be true in this world today. To my knowledge, what we really need is a global-citizen view, via this language. Language is never the end or terminal. Even if one day, English is died out in future then splendid history or written English is well-worth our attention for Shakespeare and Newton are summoning out there… So, I’m loving it, and you?
Who started for the first time since the exposure to English, I like learning English. However, learning English is not an easy task, especially listening and speaking. I have tried very hard to go to practice, and made some progresses. However, there is no practice for some time, feel that my standard of English is declining obviously. Now, I could not write some very simple words, and I am very worried about that. Fortunately, this semester we have an English class, and our English teacher Mr. Martin, is a very strict teacher. I think I dare not lazy. I know that such an attitude to study English is wrong. From now on, I will try my best to study English. I believe that practice makes perfect. As long as I keep practicing, my English will improve. Mr. Martin tells us that English is money. Everyone likes money, and if we love like the love of money, in English, as in learning English any difficulties encountered will be overcome.
Interest and Method
There must be some misunderstanding between one’s interest and method in doing something, including learning English. As the author said, the so-so capability of English is subject to the so-so attitude; likewise, one’s success is subject to his interest or passion he shows and, only one gets interested in what he is striving for can he achieve it. In this regard, I hold the same stand point as the author. Yet, the author overlooks an important thing that interest can be guided and nurtured if a good method is applied. As long as we have an good method to learn English, maybe we will not find it just a task or job to learn English. Instead, we could have fun while learning. The key element is the method that can fit the one for learning English no matter he like it or not at first.
To sum up, we cannot simply quit learning English for we take no interest in it at all. What we should do is to find ourselves a good method to learn English. It is also a process of guiding and nurturing our interest. Maybe some day, we will say learning English is an entertainment and more that just pleasing our parent or getting a high salary in job market, shouldn’t we?
As we all know,English is very important for us.we study English every day,but we can not make good use of it.A number of factors result in the current situation .However,the lack of opportunities to speak English in the college should take the own responsibility.
Born in a remote village, the resources for learning English are scarce. The majority of my classmates start to touch with English from Junior high school. However, this doesn’t prevent me from loving it .As we all know，English is the most widely used language in the international affairs. Especially in china, English is money. No matter, who you are, where you are from, a good master of English would strengthen the competitiveness of you greatly.
Having learning English for so many years, what puzzles me the most is how to find a long and effective method to learn English? Though my pronunciation is not so bad, small vocabulary is my fatal wound. This created a significant obstacle to me to communicate with foreigners. Luck favors those who prepare for it! I deeply believe that with the help of professor martin, everything would be possible! Maybe when finishing this semester, listening to a English lecture would be a piece of cake for me!
I began to study English when I’m a middle school student. To be honest, I enjoy English very much. I always got flying colors in my exams, which really helped me a lot winning the scholarships. However, English is not only a learning task to me, but also a joy. I love listening to English songs, watching American movies and reading books written in English.
Now, being a college student, I realize that English is getting more and more important in my daily life. My major curriculums are taught in English. I visit websites in English. I listen to foreign professors’ lectures in English. I take international certificated exams in English. I read and write papers in English…Wow, English is everywhere! English brings me more information and further self-improvement. So I’ll do my best to improve my English in the future.
In my opinion, English is very important for everyone in modern society and it is especially for those who are living in an international city like Guangzhou. There are more and more foreigners visiting our city for different purposes, which also means there are more and more opportunities for us to deal with foreigners.
I had been loving learning English since I was a middle school student. I like learning English by watching English movies, listening English news and songs. But I really hate studying English which had spoiled my student life. What I hate most is reading a long boring article in the English text book and then taking endless exams one after another. I believe English is just a tool for communication. It is absolutely not knowledge like science that needs to be studied very carefully and rigorously. Learning English could be very interesting and funny. What we have to do perhaps is very simple—we just need to practice our English as much as possible.
As a post graduate student I was required to learn English for another semester this year. After studying English for 16 years in school, I was really disappointed by the English teaching style in China. But I believe that Professor Martin will bring something totally different this semester and I’m looking forward to saying “I’m lovin English” when this semester ends.
In my opinion,English is an useful tool which can help us communicate with more people abroad,get more information about America,England,Australia,and so on,some of which are better than us in economy,technology,art,etc.Furthermore,we are in a world which is more international,there are more and more English name, story,movie, economic information and so on.In a word,English is more useful and more popular around us now.
When I read the beginning of the story, I was a little surprised, it was almost like me! To some degree it reflected my situation:” I am a post-graduate non-English major at xx University, required to study English, do not want to study it ,do it because it is required…”However, there’s still some difference. I was required to study English for years, scared of speaking and writing. Although I tried to change it, I passed CET4, then CET6 and I took part in some training lessons, I still couldn’t speak well. Knowing studying English is a long process, I always forget it. Laziness leads me to escape. I understand most of the grammar, know how to pass any kind of examination and remember enough words for basic communication, I’m still a dumb English learner.
Actually to say, for me, learning English is not for fun. In china, English is not only a communication tool, but also the tool for a good job. Anyone who realized this truth is trying to change his English, like me. I wish speaking fluently for a better job, certainly showing off is not a bad idea. What I need to do presently is just open my mouth and speak loud out.
Well, first,I want to say that those, who say that they will never use Ehglish or English is useless, are just finding an excuse for themselves not to learn English.Learning English well is quite a long process.It needs your perseverance.Many people can’t do it.
It has been proved that English is very useful in our everyday life.Mastering English is a kind of talent,which makes you superior to others.Also,if you really like English, it can bring you a lot of fun.
I like English.However,my English level is just so so,especially the listening and speaking.For quite a long time,it seems that they haven’t improved even a little.And this makes me feel quite discouraged.But I know my reasons.My biggest problem is that I dare not speak out boldly in English.I’m afraid that I can’t express myself clearly and fluently or I use the wrong grammar ,then I will lose my face.How embarrassed.Mybe the first step to improve my listening and speaking English is to break this psychological barrier.Well,it is a little difficult.
English is a more and more important tool for us to catch up the trends of the time. We can’t quit English just because we take no interest in it. If you do like this, you will lose many chances and you will never know the reason. Such is life. We must do something not because we like them but we need them.
Don’t be discouraged. Looking back on it, it is not so bad. Frankly, I used to be an English idiot. I still remember the day when I attended my first English lesson. After the class, I was so sad because all of student understood what teacher said except me. But I tried to copy words and listen to the tape again and again in order to improve my poor English. Unfortunately, I failed. Then, my mother and teacher said, ”How stupid you are!” As a result, I have a tearful face.
That’s an forever-unforgetable experience. Luckily, I like English very much now. People’s interest can change. So, whatever you like it or not, try to master English.
I am also a post-graduate non-English major at Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China.
Before I came to Guangzhou, I studied Human Resource Management in China Women’s University, Bejing, China. Although I’ve taken a couple of courses about Oral-English there, I still believe it’s necessary for me to take another Oral-English course for one more semester. So, I will put this term’s special Oral-English course on very significant place.
There are several reasons for me to work hard with my English study. First of all, I like it very much. Secondly, it’s so useful, not only when we try to understand and to be understood by other people, but also when we are doing the research. Besides, English is also very important for us to get a good job which is challengeable. Last but not least, English may be a tool for us to read more about other countries and their histories.
With all these reasons, I will try my best to learn English well and try to be a friend with our responsible teacher.
As a boy who is always not good at liberal arts since I began studying at school many years ago, I have not much passion for learning liberal arts as it for science arts.Of course ,English is included as one of the liberal arts.So in the past years ,I just consider studying English as a task rather than my interest.Thus Ihave never really fallen in “love” with English.
In the past days,I was always obliged to improve my English passively by all kinds of English examination,so I depended on memory to get the high score instead of treating it as a ability.I also tried to study English for interest and let English keep me company everyday.I stick to listening it for better listened-English and communicating in English for better spoken-English.However,this passion only last several months and once I lost the passion,I would put aside my English until I need it in the next examination.Therefore I had not gotten any great progress on my English.This make me discouraged.
But,on balance,I am still interested in English,it can let me know more about western cultures and is a very useful conmmunication tool in our lives.I am still trying to put English into my life,so I am expecting the English course can bring me about passion on English and make me keep it as a part of my life in the future but not just several months.
As a worldwide official language, English is a highly important instrument for us to communicate with the outside world, to find a good job. To tell you the truth, when I was a freshman in school, I was not quite aware of the importance of English until my foreign teacher Bonnie Bird who come form the state of Montana helped me bring up the interest and tried to make me aware of the significance of learning English.
What I want to say for learning English is that do not make any excuse for your laziness. In my opinion, the comment that English is no use or less useful is just a wrong view based on the writer’ wrong supposition. As a student, we shouldn’t skip classes for the reason of lack of interest. It’s our obligation to attend our class on time no matter how we like the subject.
All in all, do not give up; try our best effort to learn this important language. Just remember that if you think you can, you can.
Honestly speaking, I did’t enjoy learning English at all though I knew the importance of learning it very clearly. I remember that when I start to learn English ,I just only listen to other speaking ,seldom open my own mouth because of being afraid of making mistakes. When teacher called my name ,I stood up and kept silent. Though the score of each English test isn’t so low , my Spoken English is always so poor that I can’t have the confidence to communicate with foreigners.
However ,great changes have taken place on me. I have decided to study in Hong Kong University which is an English speaking school for a Doctor’s degree in Sociology so that I have no choice but speaking in English to communicate and write. As a result , The only way out for me now is learning English well.
As we know, Improving English is based on our own effort. Interest is a good motiavtion in English learning, I really need to practice and practice before I can speak it well. No matter learning English or other languages, or even learning something else, patience is neccessary. Therefore, I will try my best efforts to learn English better.
As a Chinese, I don’t like learning English very much at the beginning, especialy to say English. I had a first contracting with English when I was studing in middle school, our English teacher teach us words, phrases, sentences, grammar and so on. All this things made me so boring, I just studied it for passing test. However, when I met my first foreignor teacher I change my opinion. I want to make friends with foreignors, I want to show our culture to them, and I want to do many things with English . Also I find the importance and interesting of English. English as an international language is used in worldwide, and it enjoyed the majority popularity in the world. Also these years, the function of our country played in world increased quickly.So as students, I surppose we should be restict with ourself and try our best to improve, to promote.
Maybe English learning is a tough and tedious work, but once started, I will insist and find the fun of English learning.
In my high school,my English teacher just told me that,English was very important in the university entrance exam and only reanding and listening were related to my scores,so she suggested me only focused on that two.I was a docile students and I just did it as what she told me.However,when I finally went into the Sun Yat-sen University,I found tragically that my writing and speaking ability was so poor compared with my classmates that I hardly speaking English in pubilc and I hated English from then on.I paid for my stupid idea when my tofle exam failed because of my poor English speaking.I started reflecting on what I did,I realised that English was just a tool,it do not has a subjective attitude,and visibly it didn’t fail me,I failed myself,and I had no reason to hate it.From then on,I started watching American teleplay and speaked English following what the playactor said,and I insist on it for nealy two years.Learning English become a fun for me,and it is still far from enough.
At the end,I want to emphasize that,learning Enlish is not a duty or a job,you should take it as a fun,only this,you can learn English well.Utilitarianism is not advisable.
Nobody was born with interests in English
Since I was 13 years old, I began to take my English courses which I indeed regarded as a task to me. That is, I didn’t know why I should learn it while it’s so difficult to me, but I had to complete it. Luckily, my first English teacher was a passionate and skillful one who made our class interesting and happy. The task came out attractive. And then, I met Carl, a man born in German and brought up in America. I served as a guider to show him around my school, which finally embarrassed me for my lack of English ability while encouraged me for the kindness and help of Carl. One morning I waked up and began to read English, suddenly I found English was not so hard a task but very interesting and useful a language to me.
I told you this story because I think there is no one who will be interested in a new thing with no reason. What’s more, everyone will become more and more interested in a thing if he/she can understand it better and better. So if you want to make your English better, you should build up your interests in it starting from trying to know it and know more about it. But if you never want to make it better, I just tell you that’s a pity you haven’t found your reason.
To be honest, I love studying english and I love it a lot. The reason is quite different, however. I still remember the first time I watched the famous TV show Friends and I fell for it. Their life, their friendship with each other, their love for each other and all the fun made me laughed so hard and I watched the whole ten seasons at least 10 times. That was when I just began my senior year in college and my english was very poor then.. I started to read english magzines about them; read their lines with my friends; most of all, I tried to think like them and of course, in english. By the time I found my english was too poor so I made my mind to improve it and it turned to be fun. That’s my story with english studying.
When I started to learning English in middle school, I felt it was funing and had confidence to learn it well. I even dreamed to be a translator in the future. But I found English study was harder and harder since I went to high school. Sometimes I could not pass the examinations. From then on, I do not like English because I had to study hard to pass variety tests and I felt English is useless in my future work if I stay in China. My English is not good especially my oral English. I even feel anxiety in spoken lesson, I sit far away from the teacher because I am afraid the teacher ask me to stand up and say something. Since I come to Sun Yat-sen University, I find English is so important. All textbooks are in English, many teachers speak English in the classes. I can not cheat myself any more, I shoud correct my attitude toward learning English.
Maybe there is a long way in English study, but I Believe I will find the fun of it and like English as Chinese one day.
Frankly speaking, I am not quite interested in English——but I really agree that English is very important in our work and life. So I will try hard to study English, but not with enthusiasm. I will attend every class, listen to the teacher carefully, seated anywhere suitable randomly. After class, I will practice English by, for example, reviewing vocabulary. I realize it is necessary for my life. One of the situations when I feel English is too important is, that I have to read academic paper in English! But at the same time, I can’t help laughing at my poor English. In addition, as an English music lover, I have more passion to learn English when the lyric puzzles me. Most people say listening to English songs is quite a good way to improve English. I agree, just part of it. It seldom works when someone is totally absorbed in rhythm, rather than lyrics. In a way, I suffer this kind of embarrassing problem, especially when someone says to me, “Oh, your English must be good, since you listen to so many English songs!”
People hate requirement because it means something they have to do no matter whether they like it. This unconscious dislike overwhelms one’s true feelings for English. Just try to think about it in another way. Since requirement is an unchangeable fact, why not accomplish it in a more comfortable and funny way? After all, the courses are not that boring in college, at least games, movies and optional topics are added. Just enjoy this entertainment as usual! You might think that the games and the materials that the teachers prepare are stupid and so you don’t attend the class. But remember that the teachers are not the only responsible participator in this class. You are also a member of it and you should help improving it. Communicate with your teacher with your discontent and suggestion. To contribute to a harmony atmosphere is better than ruin it as being an outsider. Isn’t communication the real aim of learning English?
People like to weigh the future benefit before they take actions. Utilitarianism! To them, English means salary promotion, parents’ expectation or more. But to me, English is just a simple communication tool. A foreigner is smiling to me and I want to make friends with her. I like the rhythm of a song and so I also want to appreciate the lyrics. These deserve my effort! So don’t think too much and make yourself so tired. Try to relax and enjoy it.
The author mentioned is quite a common phenomenon in our studing of English.Frankly speaking,I’m also afraid of English.I have leanred English for more than ten years,but I still can’t communiate with others in English.I still clealy remembered one day when I was walking in my campus a foreingner came to me and asked:”Can you speak English?”He looked as if he couldn’t understand Chinese,so he need someone who could speak English.I still remember I was so neverous that I even couldn’t say a word at the moment,what I could do was only shaking my heads heavily and say “No”!How awkward I was! Unlike the author,I really do not hate English,I’m trying to improve it.But it is really hard.As Mr Wolff said,I’m feared with English not because I hate it but because I’m afraid of loosing my face. I may have strong accent of my hometown,so I’m always feared of speaking English.But actually,I really want to study English,just don’t know how to do it well.I think I need some help.
I would keep up the state of learning English.Once I heard that BEC is helpful to enter the foreign enterprises,I studied BEC by myself in junior.Reading BEC book in the morning ,listening to BEC-MP3 to fall asleep. Finally, cause of afraid not passing oral examination, I did not take the exam. Usually I see the American soap opera ,listen to the english-language news, which let me understand another culture and life.
There is no English-speaking environment, I’m used to mutter to myself before screen, because roommates around,I mutter in a low voice, the pronunciation is hard to attain standard .It’s easy to know the meaning when reading,while listening english without catching them really makes me crazy.On one hand I study english like a snail, on the other hand a day without english is kind of lacking something, it seems that English has become part of my life.
I think that the one who speak fluent English can see broader world. Having fluent English means having higher salaries in China ,which is also easier to absorb more advanced knowledge. For example, financial professionals get higher pay in foreign banks than in state-owned enterprises. Our courses in Lingnan College mostly use english teaching materials.Those who aquire english skill is fast to obatain useful information.
I will always be learning English. Use my spare time enjoying the American soap opera,singing english songs and watching English television programs.To me, life can not go on without English.
