I’m NOT Lovin it!

I’m NOT Lovin it!

I am a post-graduate non-English major at Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China.

I am required to study English for one more semester. I do not want to study English. I am only doing it because it is required by the university. I will never need to use English after I graduate. I rarely attend class, never do the homework and frankly do not care if my English improves or not. When I do attend class I sit as far away from the teacher as possible to avoid any participation in the class activities.

Some of my classmates feel differently. They know that English is increasingly important in the job market. They are highly motivated to study English because they realize that with English they can earn a higher salary. These classmates never miss a class and complete all of their homework assignments. They always sit in the front row and constantly volunteer for participation in classroom activities.

Some of my classmates study English because their parents expect it and we Chinese do what we can to please our parents. They approach English study with a “so-so” attitude and their English capabilities are “so-so.”

Tell us your story, what is your attitude towards the further study of English?

As a post-graduate, I have learnt English for more then ten years. And something regret me is that my English is still bad. Poor oral, terrible listening and bad writen. So, in the English class I was afraid to speak and disliked to participate the activities.
Indeed, I clearly recognize how important the English is. It may make me access to more information, learn more foreign cultures, get better job and so on. I had tried to get the achievement in English, but I failed, then I quited it.
Luckly I am required to study English for one more semester. It is a new chance for me to improve English skills. I promise I will take great effort to learn English better.

I do really want to improve my oral English for I think speaking is even more important than wring. After all, languages are used to communication.Although I have learned English for about ten years,I do not speak very well indeed. The main reason is that I am too shy to using English to express myself.Maybe I am a traditional Chinese boy who is afraid of “losing fases”.After several months we will try to find a job in society and I know English is very important for us to find a good job and get promotions in the future. So I really wish I could make progress in this class.I will attend each class, speak more frequently and do my homework carefully. “Don’t be shy.Just try”.This is the slogan of Liyang crasy English and I think it is just fit for me to follow.

English is more than a tool, in my opinion. I agree that English is very important in our job career and daily life. So we should not stop our further study of English.
In fact, I began to learn English from ABC in junior school in country side. It was not an easy task but I tried my best to do it well only for the exam, as many Chinese students would do. Then I realized the importance of English when I was a freshman in the university, because most of my textbooks were written by English. I continued my English study to improve my major study. As postgraduates, we are at the edge of the life in university. English is getting more and more important because it is required by many jobs. Excellent English skill can improve our competence and develop our career.
Professor Martin is very strict but I think it may be necessary to create an effective English learning environment for us. I don’t know whether I really like English, however, I accept it, or don’t refuse it. It is a long road but I’m sure I will go on my further study of English.

Having studied English for almost twelve years,I find it very frustrated that I cannot write an article in English without difficulty, and cannot express my ideas clearly in English to communicate with foreigners.I often ask myself, twelve years of studying English only leads to such a poor performance on daily communication in English, why? After reading “I’M NOT lovin it”,I suddenly find the answer:it is the motivation.I just studied English because the school and the teachers required me to learn English, and I studied the grammar carefully in class only in order to pass the exam ,which won’t let my parents down.Of courst I made it and I passed the CET4,CET6 successfully. But after class,I am rarely exposed to anything about English, not to mention to use it.
I remembered that my high-school English teacher once said about English:use it,or lose it.Unfortunately,I am afraid I totally lose it.But now, fortunately,I realize that I still have an opportunity to improve my English at college because of the Holistic English course and Professor Martin who has a totally different teaching style. I will try my best to think and write more in English, and I wish I could use English in everyday life.

I won’t forget the night when I interview a soccer player from Australia.I just could not express what I want to ask in English that made him so confused also made me embarrassed.
I love English but not in the way which I have been taught in the past 10 years. If we don’t good at writing,no one will say,oh,you don’t know Chinese. But if I can’t even talk with people in English how can I say I know English.I need more chances to practise.

Well I suppose to say that I used to be agreed with the author, I failed many English examinations during my undergraduate age, but I did not care about it. I knew I could get the certificate of bachelor’s degree, and that’s the important thing. When I was a senior, I was going everywhere to apply for a job, but I did not usually get a good offer because of my incomprehensible major and incommunicable English. Some interviewer even said my English was such bad and not like a student form the university of 211 project straightly. So I decided to return to the college, and that’s another story.
As Professor Wolff said, English is money, not agreeable but realistic. And that’s a forcefully sentence to let me face my weak point. I do need a very good salary job, and that will be my power to improve my English and benefit from it in my career.
Now there is a chance to learn English in this term, and I must grasp it by my own.

It is the first step that costs troublesome. Thanks to my first English teacher, I had a very happy beginning in studying English and I sort of liked it then.
Sure, it’s easy to get confused in learning a totally different language after having spoken our native language for nearly thirteen years. How is that feeling? Just imagine the feeling of a kid who has to accept a step-mother or a step-father, vice versa. For most of the students, most of the time, English is nothing more than a task, boring and difficult, which we can’t refuse. However, it’s hard to find out someone to blame for. Sorry, buddy, if you can not change it you have no choice but accept it. So, most of us are just trying to do the job well.
For me, English is more than a task, but a tool. The more I use it, the more surprise it brings to me. It shows me a whole new world which is so different from that of I’m living in. That’s wonderful, isn’t it? So, maybe a little interest would help.
Love it or not love it, that’s the question. How to find out the answer? We need a contrast here. Try to learn Japanese, French or Germany, any of them. It’ll not be a question anymore. I’m sure you will love English much more after the torture of the others.

To learn English or not, it is a question.

Once upon a time, crazily learning English acts as a fashion tide among Chinese students in universities, high schools, middle schools, or even primary schools. Everybody knows the “truth” that “well English equals to bright future”, and of course, there always be considerable money following the bright future. However, as China becomes more and more affluent and powerful, such sayings like “English is not a skill but a tool”, “studying English nationally is improper”, “we should make Chinese become an international language and force foreigners to study Chinese” have emerged.

As a child in “English crazy learning period”, as the youth who witted tremendous changes in my motherland, I can completely identify with such feelings. My first contact with English was in primary school, with extremely high enthusiasm. What is still fresh in my memory is my mother’s satisfied or even proud facial expression when I recite some simplest words and read some shortest conversation in front of her. At those days, to please my dearest mother is my most important motivation to study English. However, as I become more and more mature, I was puzzled for the purpose of studying English. Why we should put more energy in studying English—–a foreign language, than Chinese—–our domestic language? I confused. At that time, studying English is a tedious task for me, but the thought of “why to learn English” is never stop in my mind. When I try to read the original English textbook on my major economic, I got my answer; at least I believe I have got the answer.

English is a way of thinking and expressing. Only mastering English can we understand the essence of western science, western social and western culture. Moreover, it is a way of expressing our respect to westerns when we have conversation with them in their domestic language—–English. English and Chinese are more a pair of friends than rivals. As a result, it is suitable for us to improve the position of Chinese in the world, but it is unsuitable to suppress English. It is suitable for us to encourage foreigners to study Chinese and try our best to teach them, but it is unsuitable to force them do that.

I have interest and responsibility to master Chinese; I also have interest and responsibility to study English. I am willing to study English, not for money, but for future. I am willing to study English, not for vanity, but for understand western people and western culture with a respective heart.

  • Javier Class 4C

As a post-graduate student, I still think it is very important for us to learn English. We should improve our reading speaking and listening abilities. To do some research, it’s necessary to read some foreign experts’ article. We really need to broaden our views. To work in a foreign company, it’s important to communicate with your foreign yokemate.
I love soccer very much , my favorite team is Inter. I watch football match every week through internet. But if you don’t have good listening, you can’t understand what the commentators are saying. So I need English to improve my soccer knowledge.
Overall, it is really important for us to learn English.

When you were 15 years old, you gave up swimming becaus it’s difficult. To 18 ,you meet a person you like and she/he invite you for a swimming, then you can only say nothing but “I can’t.”

When you were 18 years old, you gave up the English again with the same reason that it’s hard. To 28, a good job requiring a great English come up,then you have to say nothing but “I can’t.”
    again.

The more lazy you are in your early life, the more troublesome you would emcounter in your future, and the more opportunities you would miss .
So ,studying hard is the best choice .

I am a post-graduate student majoring in English in Sun Yat-Sen University. My attitude toward English studying has changed a lot during the almost 10 years of studying English.
When I started studying English in Junior School, I was always the best student among all those classmates. I have a good memory and an inherent sensibility to grammars, so I was good at reading, writing and listening. And, at that time, I thought my pronunciation was all-right too, therefore I dared to speak English a lot, which made me happy and proud.
This situation continued until my entry to university. When I was a fresher of Sun Yat-Sen University, I was always informed by my English teacher that my pronunciation was not standard, e.g. I cannot pronounce the vowels well. It was a heavy strike to me, and from then on, I started to be careful to speak English, and most of the time, unwilling to speak English, though my reading and writing stay the top of my classmates.
However, I know it’s a essential to speak English fluently for our career development, and I feel it necessary to start practicing speaking English from now on. After the first class by Martin, I have known that Chinglish is all-right too, I will do my best to be confidential to speak English as much as possible.

  • Lindar Class 6C

English is very important, I think everyone knows that, in such an open society is even more important, not only because it plays a great role in our work, and it is a very important way to get knowledge and understanding of the world. Some people think that learning English is boring, once I think so, but now I have changed my views. Learning English is not a task, we can get more jobs by studying it well.
I have learned English for 10 years, but unfortunately, my spoken English is poor. As a language, I think the most important thing is to use English to communicate with others, Fortunately, now, we have a foreign teacher, so I can use this opportunity to improve my spoken English. I will try to learn English better.

  • Sharron Class 6C

Maybe because of four years’ English study in Foreign Studies University , I have been used to the atmosphere of studying English. Though I am not very well in English, still I have great interest in English . I love American films ,American TV Series , I don’t like American film dubbing in Chinese . It makes me feel so strange. Besides that ,I can find another relax in English world which is not find in Chinese environment . You can have another feeling in it. I believe that when we study English ,what we learn and what we gain from English is not just a kind of language ,but also culture ,something fresh and interesting and so on . In the course of studying English ,we can also rich ourselves and make life more colorful .Therefore I hope I can learn English well and enjoy my time in English world.

  • Rachel Class 4C

Actually, I began to learn English when I was in primary school. At the beginning, I felt it interesting and I always got high marks in the examinations. But gradually, I realized that I was only good at listening, reading and writting, which were required for an exam. And my oral English was poor. After I went to college, I once tried to attend the English Corner, but I felt that I just cannot use English to express myself fluently. May be it is because I’m too shy, may be something else. But I have to say that I’m such a lazy guy and I never go to that English Corner from then on.
In fact, I do know that English is very useful, especially the oral English. Many friends of mine who are now working in different field of business always tell me the importance of English at work. I feel regreted. Why didn’t I learn it seriously and practise my oral English frequently? Actually, English is more than a tool, it will help us a lot in our life. For example, to get a better job or something else. Now this is the final semester that I can learn English in class. So l think I should take this chance and improve my horrible English.

  • Doris Class 2C

    Do I like English?I don’t know.
Maybe I like English, but I’m afraid to speak English.I think my oral English is so poor that I don’t dare to communicate with others in English.
However,I would like to tell you I like English. Because I believe that I will like English if I always tell myself I like English.

When I was an undergraduate, there were many chances to make different kinds of presentations in English. Usually, we were required to present good papers, marketing plans and research reports. Initially, it was really great challenges for us. We tried to combine English, body language and arrangement of presentation contents to improve the effect. In the process, I gradually find that English is not only a tool, that sometimes it changes the way I am thinking or the perspective of looking at things, which is fantastic!

  • Tina class 4C

Since I entered into middle school,I had started to study English. From that time to now,I have studyed English for a long time. But what a pity is that I am not a good learner of English.Several times,I have lost my English in some important exams. It is not because I do not know the importantance of English,It is just because that I am not interested in English. Now,I really realize that how stupid my idea is.
Fortunately,I have a chance to improve my English now.I always dared not to speak English in public before. Because I have accent ,I am afraid others can not understand me.But in the further English study ,I will change myself in the class.I will grab every possibility to open my mouth, but not care whether I have speak something wrong.I also know learning a language is a long process and there is no exception of English. So what I want to do now is just“accumulate ”and “ try my best to do it”.

  • claire class 11C

I do want to improve my English. Since I had studied English more than ten years, I’m not sure my English is good. Although I know that I need read more, listen more, write more and speak more English. I just watch English movie and listen English music. I care about my pronunciation so much that I scared talking with foreigner. From the first martin’s class, I do have confidence. I know that there is no natural English or international English. Thanks to martin. You give me sunlight in English world. I do looking forward to the further English class.

  • Jenny Class 11C

I study English in order to pass the kind of examation, once I past,I thrown the English data immediately. I always study English off and on.Everytime I want to study English once again,I find that I almost forgot all the word which I familiar with. I know the study of English is continuous ,but I do not have enough confidence to persist. And I also know English is very important nowtoday. It is true of that ‘English is money’.but how can I begin with little vocabulary and poor grammar?

  • Dave Class 4C

Above story tells us three different ways of studying English. Actually speaking, I haven’t expected we shall have English classes in post-graduate stage. But it really makes its sense.
I’m a post-graduate student in Lingnan College majoring in Finance. Most of us shall work in financial institutions after we graduate. The financial industry in China is still young and most of our experience is learned outside, especially in America. So English speaking and writing, as a basic skill, becomes more important for our major students.
My oral English is not well and I have tried many times to improve it. But it seems that every time I can’t concentrate myself on it for a long time. This is a big obstacle for me. But I see this term as a chance to change this situation. I tell myself if I missed this term I won’t have good chances to seize good opportunities when I look for jobs last-half year.
Overall, I should devote more time on my oral English this term. I hope it can pay off.

  • Cecilia Class 8C

In my oppinion,English study is just like the guy I like so much, but I can’t tell him.Indeed,I darn’t..Although,I have passed so many English examinations during the past years,But,I am still scared, when I speak English in public.
I’m so afraid that the teacher would ask me to answer the questions.I’m afraid that I can’t answer the questions fluently, actually,It is.
Also,I ofen keep silence when I meet the foreigners.I’m afraid that he or she can’t understand what I said.
I just like listen or just watch English movies,But,I can’t speak it .I know,it’s complicated, and it makes me so depressed. So,maybe,I need some help.

  • Alex Class 6C

When I first learn english almost 11 years ago,I found english is a little funny and, frankly, some ridiculous. It’s a totally different language from chinese which easily triggered my curiosity. Been reading after the teacher with a group of students and trying hard to remember what it means.thought of why I need to learn such a difficult language appeared in my mind now and then.Such attitude towards english let me just can pass the exams but couldn’t enjoy it.
At first, learning english has become a must for higher education. No matter you like it or not it seems like an obligation.Although thought of why come along with me all the time. After entering the university,my attitude towards english change in U-Turn.Its usefull for communicating with foreigner, getting informationg from outside and entertaining yourself with more choices.I believe english is a key to open the door towards a totally wonderful world. I thought I have got the right attitude to english. The pity is that 11 years endeavour do not give me the ability to communicate with foreign freely,at least letting myself feel use freely. Although I can talk with people some basic subjects. I am wonder to known weather time I had spend on english is worthy.
Hesitated on english?Yes,for I think I don’t earn back what I had pay.Now the problem that trouble me is not weather I need to learn english or not ,but how much time I should spend on english.Truly is that I need english to make my life a little different and I don’t. give it up.

  • Jessica Class 8C

More than once,I ask myself what does English mean to me? Maybe it is something that put you in delimma.
Actually,we began to learn English when we were in primary school, but how many people will say they really master English and fall in love with English?
During so many years of English learning, we just focus on listening, writing and reading that is required by the exams. Thus even though we have studied English for many years, we can hardly
    comunicate with English people.
I think the atmosphere of studying English is very important. If we want master a lauguage,we should put ourselves in certain English atmosphere. We can watch English films and TV series, listen to English songs and so on. These interesting ways can improve our English communicative ability and take more fun to us.

  • jason class 6c

No matter weather you like English or not, undoubtedly English is useful and learning English well do help you to perform more perfectly in your career or your life. Maybe there are some students thinking that English is useless or disliking English just as the article says. Yes ,I think it is very normal. It cannot be everyone love English and master English well. Everyone has the right to pursue the things they like or that they think is right. .And it is a process and our opinions may change. In the process of my studying English, my interest in English change two times. It is my first time to lost my interest in English when I was in senior middle school. Because my English teacher is not patient any more as the teacher in junior middle school and we have less time in learning it.. Then I studied in college campus I spend less time in English and lost my interest again. As time fly by , I get by interest in studying English and I know that it will help me to know more about the world outside and perform well in my career. I will try my best to master it in this semester.

  • Sandy Class 4C

First of all, I should say that I study English for myself, not for my parents or anyone else. I love English.
Secondly, having a good master of English is quite necessary for our postgraduate study. You know, many of our textbooks are in English and some classes are taught with English. Besides, we sometimes need to read English papers for further research. What will happen if we don’t know English?
Thirdly, people who can speak English fluently have more chances than those who can’t, especially at the time of job-hunting. Graduated students are trapped in some particular company when they are not good at English.
So, in this society mastering English can help us a lot, and we are responsible to overcome all of the difficulties in learning English.

  • Jessica Class 5C

Although I am a postgraduate student now, I found my English is becoming poorer and poorer. Because when I have no English class, I never learn English except reading some papers required. So, you can see that I am so lazy.In our English class, I always don’t want to show my poor English.
Recently, I found that most of my classmates’ English is very good, especially oral English. I suppose I should try my best to improve my oral English. Actually, I like English, I love it! But when I realize that my English is so poor, I hate it! So, I am not sure my feeling towards English.
In future, I hope I can afford more time to learn English. Maybe, from now on I should tell myself “don’t be so lazy and speak English as much as possible!”

  • Amy Class 4C

Frankly speaking, I feel a little afraid of English like some other students. At the undergraduate lever, I sat as far from the English teacher as possible and were not willing to participate in any activities almost each class. This was not because I hated English, on the contrary, I loved it and was eager to study it well. However, I thought my English especial the oral English was so poor that I didn’t dare to open my mouth. I feared that others would laugh at me once I made a mismake. It is Mr Wolff that let me know face is not important in order to learn English well. On the other hand, it doesn’t matter you admit it or not, English is indeed becoming more and more important and a good master of English will be a great advantage when hunting a plum job. Nobody wants to keep mute in the interview of Citi Bank or some other famous international companies and fluent English will help you to stand out among a sea of candidates. So I think this semester I will make great efforts to study english and open my mouth as much as possible, after all it is a great helper of our careers.

  • Rita Class 4C

Even though I am non-English major, I need to use English much often. For example, I need to search many English papers from American and British academic database for my paper-writing; I need to write my paper in English if wanting it published in the magazines overseas; also, English is very helpful for me to find a good job. As we can see, English is being paid more and more attention nowadays. English quizzes are required to take in many domestic exams such as China’s Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Besides, I have heard of that not only the foreigner companies, but also China’s government institutions are going to take English interviews to find a better employee. So English is becoming more and more important in our study and work.
I really want to improve my English writing, listening and speaking, so that I can find a good job after graduating. But although I realize the importance of English, I am just too lazy to study it unless required to by my English teachers. Luckily one more semester I am required to study English now, but maybe this is not enough to improve my English skills. I should be more hard-working and make detail plan to practice my English, such as reading the English magazines and newspapers, listening to English radios, seeing English movies and so on, other than finishing my homework.

  • Andy Class 4C

To be frankly speaking, when I firstly read this article ,I have a little thoughts like above the author. But my reasons is so different form his ,because I have the thirsty for learning my english including oral listening writing and so on.But when I enter the classroom ,I have to recognize that I am so normal for the ability of learning english.Of course ,I know that my foundation is not good and my ability is limited . But I just tell myself that you must have the enough confidence to do everything including learning oral and live.

  • Shaw Class9C

I always love English, though I major in Chinese. As for me, a new language is a new way to think. It’s not only to remember some words so I can understand the passages written in English, what’s more important is to think the way as the English-speaking people think. That’s how I get a new perspective.

  • Erick Class 8C

    Well, I don’t hate it.
I like watching movies during my leisure time, for the most part of them were dubbed in English. It’s really exhausting to constantly keep an eye on the subtitles, and sometimes it just turned out to be an awful product of someone who I am not sure whether he translated them by Google or some other software else. In the wake of it, it would be hard to get the idea of the movie or lost in the restless motion of fast backward and fast forward trying to get the clue been given through the picture in the movie to connect the dots without the help of the actors’ lines, for having too poor an English to understand what they were saying.
So this is the motivation that has been pushing me constantly to study English, and I am enjoying it while I can feel more at home with English dubbed movies than a year, a month, or even a day before.

  • Susan Class 9C

I remember the firs time I learnt English, I was so exciting that I could say something using another language with so different pronunciation and grammar from Chinese. Every time I achieved a high score of my English exam, I was so proud of myself. This sense of achievement encouraged me to study English on and on. After I became an undergraduate, the reason why I learnt English was a little more realistic. I realized that English was such an important tool in hunting an ideal job with high salary. There was no doubt that the ones good at English could easily earn much more money than others. That is why the professor said “English is money.” Now I am a post-graduate, my major is non-English, my future job probably has nothing to do with English, just as the student said in the article. But I still pay attention to English learning, not only because it represents money in some sense, but also because it is the bridge for me to go into other excellent cultures in the world. I can watch an interesting TV show for fun, I can see a fabulous English film to know more about people living far from us, or I can read some English classical books to gain more spiritual resources. I think I am so lucky to be a post-graduate that I still have much time to improve my English at school.

  • Jessica Class 4C

In my opinion, English is a tool for communication. The most important thing is learn to use it in suitable environment.

  • Doris Class 4C

    My story about English learning
I began to learn English in my junior high school. It has been ten years until now. I have to admit that my English, especially oral English, is not good enough.
When I was in junior and senior high school, I didn’t have much opportunity to speak English. I just learnt so-called “dumb English”. Fortunately, I practiced a lot in listening English. As a result, listening English was not too difficult for me.
When I entered college, I chose International Economics and Trade as my major. In the college, I found I still had a long way to go to improve my English. Many of my classmates could speak fluent English. I really admired their good English ability. Meanwhile, I had a feeling of inferiority for my poor English. Thanks for Lingnan College, many textbooks were in English. A lot of teachers teach us in English. And we had to use English to do many presentations, to write paper and to take examinations. After class, I often saw some English films. Practice makes perfect. I have made progress in my English during the past four years in undergraduate school.

My attitude towards the further study of English
Frankly speaking, I like English and I know how important English is. English is some kind of interesting and useful language.
Since China joined WTO, English has become more and more important. We can see many foreigners in school, on the street or in the company. English is a necessary tool to communicate with the world. If you don’t have good command of English, you may miss a lot of opportunity and interest things. For example, you can’t make friends with foreign people and you can’t enjoy the Hollywood blockbuster in English.
As for myself, my major is International Trade now. Obviously, English is definitely important. Besides, I hope I can find a good job in the world top500 companies. But most of the world top500 are foreign companies. That means I will face a lot of English interviews in the job-hunting process. In one word, English is very important for my future career.
I think the main problem existing in my English study is FACE. I am always afraid of making mistake and losing face when I speak English. In Professor Martin’s class, I hope I can speak English bravely! I will try my best!
After class, I will try other ways to improve my English, for example, watching English TV and films, reading English newspaper, talking to some friends in English, etc. I do believe that nothing is difficult if I put my heart into it.

  • Nancy Class5C

To be frank, I’m an English lover. Whenever there’s spare time, I will read English magazines、newpapers and watch American films etc, which can give me relaxation. So I don’t agree with the first student’s opinion mentioned above. I think it’s necessary to study English even if we graduate in the near future.
China is becoming more and more internationalized since it participated in WTO. English is indispensable during trading activities with foreign countries. It’s vital to our personal career as well. Mastering skillful English makes you more competent in the fierce competition.
I did very well in various English examinations. And I took part in many contests of English during which I got some rewards. Still, as a postgraduate, I feel it urgent to improve my oral English because I couldn’t speak fluently. I think it’s a common problem facing up to many students right now.
Anyway, I’m determined to improve my English without hesitation.

I don’t agree with the author. I think everything including English is useful. The problem is how to use it. We never know what will change our life in future. I think English is not just a tool is also a kind of self-cultivations. Sometimes, English can give you a new view. Although my English is very week, I still like learning English.
The first time of my English learning was 1995, when I was in kindergarten. I have studied English nearly twenty years. But I am not a hardworking man. I don’t like reciting English words, composition and practicing listening. My oral English is worst in all of these skills, because I am shy to speak English. I just study English hard when the exam is coming.
But now, I am a master in a famous university. I know how important English is. Being a good English speaker will give me more and more opportunities to make my life better. So in this term, I will pay more time improving my English. I believe that English is money. I need more money, I need English.

  • Tony Class 4C

Well, as far as I’m concerned, English is just a bridge used for communication. Only because of globalization, most chinese companies have to get in touch with foreign experience. But it should not be a sufficent ingredient to judge a person.

  • Ray Class 1C

As for me,English study is kind of pleasure rather than pressure. In the first place,English is a necessity for deeper study in many fields, in the second place,English gives a key to a different and wanderful culture, provides possibilities of an enriched life to me.I’ve learned English for 10 years ,as many of my coevals have, but for ten years of mute English. Lacking of practice and scare of losing face make my oral English terrible and confidence weak.Taken the first class of Professor Wolff’s, I realized it’s a great oppotunity to improve my oral English, in and outside the class.I earnestly hope so.

  • Lorbet Class 15C

I think English is one of important skills we need to predominate in our future life,so I always want to improve my oral English and am desire to communicate with someone .Also,do not want to be a silence English student when I have study English for ten years .I hope that I can acquire a good achievement in spoken English this semester with the help of professor.

My long long journey of learning English really began when I attended to the university. Before that,I just struggled against the exams in English.During university life,I found it interesting to learn a foreign language and study a different culture. It’s a whole new world to me.I don’t really care about whether learning English is useful or not.I just learn it for fun.

  • Sara Class 4C

For me, at the beginning, I was so curious about English, the first foreign language I got in touch with. I think it was so funny to say English, read English articles, listen to English songs and watch English movies. And I always got high marks in the exams. However, this passion did not last long. The endless recitation, dictation and examinations exhaust all my devotion and energies. From then on, I did not want to take the note, did not want to participate in the class activities and even tried my best to avoid my English teacher. Of course, my English was poor at that time. When I entered the university, I knew more about English, which is more than a course, or an examination, which is useful in career, in academic research and so on. So, for these reasons, I try to master English as well as I can.
At the same time, I find myself fall in love with English again. The free learning environment makes me study English in the way I like. I can watch the American soap opera, listen to the radio and enjoy the music. Admittedly, I go back to the initial state when I first met English. Just learning it by your interest and follow your heart. That is the simplest and also the most essential way to learn English.
I will continue my learning journey with the passion of English. I can enjoy a lot from it.

Personally speaking, I can’t take the arguments the author makes here. As a post-graduate, Learning English is not just getting preparing for a job or career in the near future, improving our academic ability, but also gives us so much fun.
As you known, when in the English class, we can share life experience with professor or classmates and that will give us much fun and useful information. Outside the class, with skilled oral English, you can communicate with foreigner confidently and make friends. The last but not the least, Reading English newspapers, poems, or other literatures can change our world outlook, outlook on life and values.
So just fill your life with English and keep moving on.

I have learned English for twelve years. Maybe I should surprise that I spent such a long time on it, but I still stay at an unsatisfactory level. I always play a “good girl” role in front of my parents and teachers. In junior high school, I just study for study without known the meaning and the importance of the English studying. In the senior high school, I know the meaning and the importance of the English studying, which just prepare for passing the college entrance examination. And in the backland of china, the teachers just emphasize the importance of the score of the papers, and never care about the oral English. In the college, I am really on to English. but with my shy characters and my English-learning background, I never want to open my mouth to speak loudly and freely. I am just scared. Facing English, I am a coward girl.
After I have read the article and recall the “rough” trip of English learning, I am filled with complicated moods. There maybe too many excuse to explain for me. But no excuse is excuse. There is no medicine for recreation. There is no need to stress why English is important and how important is it. What I need to do now is picking up my confidence and interest. And sincerely saying “ I love English, and want do it better for my life!”

  • Peter Class 8C

I studied English from junior high school, but after decade I don’t have a good mastery of English.Three are many reasons accounting for it.The main reason is that I supposed it is needless for me to invest great times and efforts into learning English, for I have never had a conversation with a foreigner in English yet,and some my friends who major in English got the jobs that have not to deal with English after they left the college.what’s more ,to learn a language well ,one should love this language in his or her heart. For me,English is not beautiful but difficult. So I don’t try hard to learn English.
Now I feel regret very much. There is no doubt that English is important and useful, and it is the language most commonly used and most widely understood in the world. Most of My present’s schoolmate are proficient in English.I hope my English could be same as them. From now on,I will love this language and spare no effort to learn it well.

  • Stephen Class 16C

English is very important for me, but I would like learn English by my own way. There are many material of my research field in English which I must read carefully. For instance, the judgments of International Court of Justice, theses and monographs written by international scholars, and news and magazines about present international politics . Maybe there is no need to read extra reading materials for the purpose of studying English.
I think the most important skill of English is reading. In fact, there may be few opportunity for speaking English with foreigners. But now there is an ESE created with the help of Professor Martin Wolff, I determined to follow his instructions.

  • Ryun Class15C

I did not love English either. When I was an eleven-year-old boy, I attended my first English class in my lifetime. Then Miss Linda, my teacher, didn’t begin with ABC since almost all students but I in the class had already started being instructed by her during the previous summer vacation. And Miss Linda was too impatient to make me follow the pace of teaching and learning. Just since then I had lost the interest in English. Though I planned to invent a really suitable autonomous plan about English learning and was determined to carry it out, the result was not as satisfactory as I expected. And my English level still had not been actually raised until I became a undergraduate.
Having entered my first university, as to me, the first desirable approach to English was to carefully read excellent writings especially connected to my own major. And I reckoned the key point was that you should read the same article for many a time in order to be able to write down the article from memory though you may refer to the corresponding Chinese translation while writing. But later on I met a Mr. Webster whose style in deed was very like my dear Professor Wolff. He told me the following truth: I was such a person who blindly believed in reading, that my English abilities would develop unhealthily, abnormally, and that at last my reading faculty would never go far. From then on I listened to some popular English speaking broadcasts more often, and I created more occasions for myself to talk with others whose English were better than me.
Nevertheless, before long I had to be involved into preparation for the national entrance examination for postgraduate. You know such an examination was only concerned with your mute English, so I no longer engaged myself in English listening and talking. Fortunately I am now with this real Mr. Wolff, not merely with that likely one. To sum up, I like harshness, and I like strictness, that is because the professor takes care of our English just out of his good will. I apologize for my former arrogance.

    Interesting platform!
But actually this is a sad story.
I have study English for thirteen years since my grade one in the junior high school, but I still cannot use English to communicate, especially the spoken English and the written English. Hoo! The only meaningful progress I made is in the reading English. Why? Let me tell you.
When I was in high school, the most time in study English was reading a sentence and made a right choice from “ABCD”. Day after day, that`s the way we study. At that time, I almost thought syntax was the only most thing for studying English. In the last two years, I began to read newspaper and some interesting magazines. Now I think that`s the only two years I was really studying English.
After entering university, English is the necessary course for the first two years. But every class has too much students. It`s hard for us to communicate with teachers, and teachers seems not created environments for to talk with each other. So I still did not open my mouth to speak. Of course at that time, I, myself, dared not speak, because I was so shared that I feared others laughing at me. What a stupid idea!
Right now, I am reading and try to speaking English everyday. I really made up my mind to improve my English this semester.

  • Tina Class 9C

I like studying English. In my opinion, a command of English will not only equip me with a language skill, but also improve the processes of my mind, because the learning process can widen my sight and enlarge my knowledge. Furthermore, English is very important and useful for our career development. I began my English learning when I was in the third grade of primary school, just taking it as a learning task. I worked so hard that I always got full marks in the English contest. With the satisfaction of high mark, I read more and learning English gradually became a habit, or even a hobby, in my life. However, when I entered the university, I felt sad to find that I was only good at reading and writing, just as the majority of college student. I realized that for years I have been learning the so-call “dumb English”, i.e. I had little confidence in my oral English, as well as my listening skill. When somebody speaks fast I usually couldn’t catch him or her. Thus I don’t dare to communicate with others in English because I feel ashamed to keep asking “I beg your pardon”. I couldn’t break this vicious circle so I also lose the chance to improve my oral English. Finally, I merely got B in my English course, in comparison to all A’s in other courses. For times I have considered giving up, but I persuaded myself that there were ways to improve. English used to be, is, and will still be my favorite. I started to change my mind in the English learning. I tried to seize any opportunity to communicate with my classmates and teacher. All the while, I read some original English novels and watch English movies without Chinese subtitles. In a word, I try my best to improve my English. As the old saying goes, where there’s a will, there’s a way. I got 92, the highest score in the Yale-China English Examination.

Of course, there is no end of learning. I feel so lucky to have a chance to keep studying English. I will do my best as before.

  • Toms Class 2C

To tell the truth, I really don’t like learning English. In my childhood, I learned English for test, which means I need to study hard in order to get the entrance of college. English is so boring, and I don’t need it to communicate with other people recently. English is complicate and not as clear as Chinese. Some meanings which can express clearly in Chinese by a short sentence, but when using English, it need a lot of words and it even sometimes made people confused. For these reasons, I don’t like English. So, even learning English for almost 13 years, my English is as poor as 13 years ago.
During my collage time, I recognized that English is a tool to get a better job and to have a better life. I found that many jobs need English skills. So I had to prepare my English, in order to pretend that my English is not worse during job interview. I gradually recognize that I need to study English well, especially spoken English. Spoken English is a communicate tool which might be needed in my future job.
As time goes by, I have to commit that my attitude bout study English is change. I will try my best to learn English, such that I can have a blight future.
