I’m NOT Lovin it!
I am a post-graduate non-English major at Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China.
I am required to study English for one more semester. I do not want to study English. I am only doing it because it is required by the university. I will never need to use English after I graduate. I rarely attend class, never do the homework and frankly do not care if my English improves or not. When I do attend class I sit as far away from the teacher as possible to avoid any participation in the class activities.
Some of my classmates feel differently. They know that English is increasingly important in the job market. They are highly motivated to study English because they realize that with English they can earn a higher salary. These classmates never miss a class and complete all of their homework assignments. They always sit in the front row and constantly volunteer for participation in classroom activities.
Some of my classmates study English because their parents expect it and we Chinese do what we can to please our parents. They approach English study with a “so-so” attitude and their English capabilities are “so-so.”
Tell us your story, what is your attitude towards the further study of English?
Frankly speaking, I have little interest in English learning. But on the other hand, I really realize the importance of it. As an universal language, English have been affecting my study and daily life greatly, I use English books, learn English academic thesis, read English newspaper, and now, it will occupy my whole Monday every week. However, I feel depressed to find myself with little improving on my English study and ability. The reason is quietly obvious, what English brings to me is endless dictation, long reading practice and boring exams, I never gain happiness and interest through the learning. According to the research from some psychologist, people will keep their attitude and feelings toward something at the first sight or contact with something, much more severe if this happens in your childhood. Beyond doubt my first English teacher failed in her teaching, I really can not memorize how much times I received corporal punishment because of failing to write the new words correctly. And now I learn to remember the benefit from her and hold appreciation, but it is quiet hard to rectify my perspective to English. But it is not all of the story, I decide to watch more English movies and learn more western culture, proper approach is quietly important. I do not like to take my broken English with me when I leave the campus. I will try my best.
In fact,I do not like English.But I know I need it.So I must learn it.If it must be a mission,I will try my best to finish it.I usually forget the words when I open my mouth.It is really a bad feeling.Maybe the reason I do not like English is that I am bad at it.In my memory,I have learnt no new words for four years.It is terrible for English studying.As a graduate student,English is very important to me.So I will try my best to do well in it this term.I look forward to that this class wil arouse my interest in English and liberate me from oral English scare.
I was very interested in English when I was in primary school, I showed great passion and worked so hard because I believed that English was useful in the future. When I entered the secondary school, I found the study was so tiring and spent limited time on learning English. At that time, learning English means getting high scores to enter a good university. Now, I would say though I have used many English textbooks, my English is still poor. The way we used to follow has to be changed, hope this semester I can make some improvement.
I’m so glad to see so many classmates’ stories about learning English. For myself, my attitude to English is ambivalent. When I was a middle school student, I usually went to the English corner in my city, and was so courageous to talk with the others, no matter Chinese or foreigner. However, when I entered university, I found my English was so poor and basic skills were not so sound. And then it was the Face as you said that made me away from the English corner. And certainly I fell behind farther and farther. But later I felt that only by admitting our backwardness can we overcome it. And I put effort into English speaking again.
My friends and I think I am a talented girl in learning different languages, but learning English is not like learning a new Chinese dialect for me. As far as I am concerned, learning English needs confidence, talent, good memory, and most important persistence. A talented one can’t do it well if he or she works by fits and starts.
I am so thankful that you won’t blame us for our chinglish, and I will catch the opportunity to practice my oral English. I think the better one learn English, the more places he can use it, thus we can’t give It up with only a word that English is useless.

I began to learn English when I go to junior high school. English is totally strange for me before. My first English teacher is a beautiful young lady who just graduated form her university at that time. As a younger, she is dynamic and patient. She is our teacher as well as teacher. Maybe because of her, English is my favorite subject at than time. But when I go to high school, I found that English is harder and harder for me to learn well. I almost lose confidence in learning it. Luckily, my English encouraged me to be confident and told many useful skills about learning English. Thanks of her, I did well in the Entrance to College of China and admitted by Sun Yat-sen University. As a post graduate before and a graduate now, I continue to studying English and I hope I can learn it as well as I can.
In my opinion, English study is not only important, but also interesting. Honestly, English capability plays a significant role in your career. Nowadays China has had more economic exchanges with the outside world. If you want to get promotion, a high level of oral proficiency in English would help you a lot. But that is not the only reason why I learn English. I spend two hours on English just because I love it. With the mastery of English, I can enjoy the movie from Hollywood and novel written by O.Henry. And the soap opera called friends is also my favourite. So just enjoy it. Why not?
Well, I think the reason why people doing a thing or not is complicated. For me, sometimes learning English is funny and interesting. I downloaded some computer games in English, and I enjoyed the game while studying English. Sometimes, learning English is painful. For example, when I got a high fever and also have to do some exercise in English, this is terrible.
Lots of students don’t like English ,but English is my thing ,I began to learn English at the elementary school .At that time ,I was the top3 students in my class in English study ,which gave me a great confidence . when I went to junior middle school，I only made a little progress in English ,many students outdone me, because at that time I spent lots of time engaging in the small thing, not paid any attention to my English study. Four years ago , I began to realize the importance of English .for example ,Mastering English well not only can give you a great edge over other competitors ,but also give you a deep insight into foreign culture. From then on, I threw myself into learning English , day by day ,my English improved greatly . To sum up ,learning English is a long and tough road, you must stick to it ,otherwise, you will be the same as before. As the saying goes , tough time never last ,but tough men do .
I love English for three reasons: firstly, I think it a useful for me to make friends from different countries. Sometimes I even think that maybe English is so useful that I can chat with aliens by using it, if they do come to the earth one day. In addition, it plays an important role in my dream of going abroad for further education. You know, without language, it is hard to imagine that someone can live in any country which has total different culture and say different language. The point is that, having a background of studying abroad in a world famous university like Yale, means a good job, fat salary as well as promotion. Last but not least, English will give me a sense of freedom. Clearly, as the international language, people all over the world will use it when, for example, a Swede people one day meet a French people in India, and, it is probably for them to communicate in English .besides that, it is convenient for me to travel around the world. Believe it or not, it is one of the biggest motions for me to learn English and strive as much as possible to make it better.
The conclusion is that instead of treat English as a burden, I would like to say that, I enjoy learning English, because it gives me a sense of achievement and do it till I drop.
Actually, I don’t like English that much. But I realize that English is very important to me and everyone. I started learning English since I was in primary school. After over ten years, I find that it is still hard for me to open my mouth, and express myself in English. So, I do really want to improve my oral English, and I will try my best to improve my English.
In contrast with the author, I like English very much. Being born and raised in the countryside, I did not learn English until I was in the junior high school. Beside, oral English of teachers in the countryside is not very good. Therefore conditions for me to learn English are terrible. In fact, I learned English so hard that I was able to keep up with my senior high school classmates, who learned English when they were in primary school. To my regret, my oral English is not very good. I have realized the problem that there are some mistakes in my pronunciation, and it is also difficult for me to speak English as fluent as to speak Chinese. To some extent, this is due to my infrequent practice.
So many people, including my teachers and my friends, have told me that English is extraordinary important in this century, especially if my future job is connected to it! I agree with them, and I will practice it more from now on.
Last year, in the 105th Canton Fair, I worked as a translator for an exporting company. At the very beginning, I was nervous and shy, being afraid of making mistakes. Then a foreign partner of the company said to me, “Girl, your English is good!” This encouraged me to speak English confidently! And of course I did a good job in the Canton Fair.
In my opinion, English is a tool. As a worldwide official language, however, we need use the tool to study foreign knowledge. So, I really agree that English is very important in our work and life. For me, English study is a long, hard and inefficient process. I am afraid of it. My English is very poor. I fear losing face in public. So I rarely speak and write English. But now, I think I have an opportunity to studying English well. In your class, I don’t fear losing face. I can enhance my English skill and like English.
I do really want to improve my oral English for I think speaking is even more important than wring.After all,languages are used to communication.Although I have learned English for about ten years,I do not speak very well indeed.The main reason is that I am too shy to using English to express myself.Maybe I am a traditional Chinese boy who is afraid of “losing fases”.After several months we will try to find a job in society and I know English is very important for us to find a good job and get promotions in the future.So I really wish I could make progress in this class.I will attend each class,speak more frequently and do my homework carefully. “Don’t be shy.Just try”.This is the slogan of Liyang crasy English and I think it is just fit for me to follow.
We are conscious that English is a useful tool, it can give us wealth and better jobs. However, we have learned English for many years, but still can’t use it flexiblely, what makes us great pain.So we have no confidence, and then we give up, this is our attitudes towards the English language. However, I think, to learn English well, must have a lot of enthusiasm, by usual lot of practice, a lot accumulation. Addition, a good guide for students passionate teacher is very important. Nowadays I am a post-graduate student in Sun Yat-sen University,and I have learning english for about ten years.But my english is still poor,especily in speaking and listening english.Once upon a time,I asked my english teacher why should I learn english,he told me that if you didn’t pass the english examination,you wouldn’d have the chance to get further education.
I had my first english class in junior high school which is in countryside,from then on,I began to remember english words,phrases,and I was becoming good at gramma and reading english articles,but I rarely speak english,so my english is “dummy english”.There is one thing impressed me most in my undergraduate life about english.That was the first year I entered university,one day in english class my english teacher rollcalled my name.I stood up and readed a paragraph of one article loudly,but the whole class laughed out when I finished.After class,I asked one of my classmates why did they laugh,he told me that my
pronunciation was strange.So I speaked english as less as possible when crowded four years,and I became shy more or less.
But my attitude towards english have changed because I realized the importance of english.English is a tool while it is an compentence also,even you can make your life by it.Today many courses are teached by english,so you have no choice but to learn english.An we all know,earth is becoming smaller,many cluture are mixed together.If your english is bad,you will lose many good opportunities and interest things.What’s more,you can make friends with foreigners,learn and enjoy their culture.I really want to improve my english,and I think my largest difficulty is getting rid of my afraid.Something I shoud do this term and future,first of all,speak english as more as possible tough my pronunciation is bad,I will try my best to defeat my weakness,speak english bravely.Second,construct an enviroment of english for myself,such as watching english TV and films,scanning english website,read english papers and so on.Third,follow my dear english teacher Martin wolff, finish my homework seriously,at the same time,this is the basic thing which I should do.
As we all know, English is more and more important. For each of us college students, it is not just a compulsory subject, but also a tool that can allow ourselves to live better. As a compulsory subject, it can make us understand western society and western culture. At the same time, as a language, it allow us to communicate with more people. This is very important for everyone, no matter whether you need to use English in the future. Because of this, I am very envious of those who can speak English very fluently. I hope I can become a number of them someday. In the past , we had little opportunity to speak English. Now we have. So I will do my best to improve my English.
For me,learn English is not only because English plays an important role in our modern life, but also my own interest, I like the English pronunciation and the writing which looks so smooth. Although my English is not very good,I will study hard and try to do more practice,striving to achieve new progress during the semester.
There is no doubt that English is very important in today’s world. English is the most popular language of communication all around the world. People should learn some English, even if you don’t like it. It is just a tool. Maybe you don’t like computers, but you still need to work or study with them. For myself, I like American culture. I love Hollywood movies, American TV series and American science fictions. I am fascinated by them. If I understand English, I can understand them better. I can see the movies without Chinese subtitles. That’s cool for me! So, in my opinion, whether you like English or not, you need to learn English. The whole world is speaking English, we absolutely have to learn some English.
To be frank,I like learning English and speaking.Since studying in middle school ,the first mind that jumps in my brain is that if I can speak English freely I can make many foreign friends,which will certainly broad my sight and my world of value,not for money or a blight future.So for me learning this language is nothing but a way to know more about the big world,to colour my life ,to make myself to be known for more people.In a fact ,if you take the opinion that learning English is building a good future or just for dealing with assignments which must be finished on time ,nongthing you can realy derive from the prosece of studying except complaint.In a word ,learning a language is getting a mean to show yourself to the wanderful outworld.
As for me, I am interested in English very much. As a universal language, I think it is very useful and interesting. There is some reasons as follows: Firstly, I can broad my international perspective if my English is very good. For example, I can know what is happpening in other countries through reading foreign newspapers; I also can acquire many new knowledge from many countries which are different form ours by reading English books; Secondly, good English can help me to watch many excellent Hollywood movies. Thirldly, it is also an important point, good english can help me to get a good job in China.
In a word, English is very useful for me. I will attend every class, and participate in all activities as active as possible.
maybe some one don’t like study english.but, for me, I want to improve my oral english. it is a long time to learn words. most of it ,I fortgot.so it may hard work. nowthat we need learn english, we must work hard. english is a tool, why not we can use it ? let’s study as a game not a burden.
We all know that English is very important, and there are so many students learning English very hardly in China, but China is not America exactly. There have no atmosphere to speak English, because if some one speaking English in public, others will possibly regard you as a stupid. This is the key point. So if some one wants to improve his or her English, the best choice is to study in western. But this is impossible to us, because we have no or a little money. Maybe Martin’s thinking and doing can setter this problem, he can create the atmosphere for everyone to speak English happily.
We have learnt English for many years,but most of us can’t speak this lauguage well.Some of us even hate English because their courses are boring.Poor teachers provide us with gramma and vocabulary without think about what we can do with them.In my opinion,English should be treated as an important part of our life instead of using it in class only.Then if you don’t like it,help yourself and I wish you gook luck.
Why do you learn English? English is money,everyone neesds money!
However,learning English well is not the only way to make money althought it could bring you much money sometimes.
I like many English songs, television shows and movies very much, such as YESTERDAY，FRIENDS and FORREST GUMP.
As for me,frankly,it is the very reason to take my time in learning English that I could understand and enjoy those English songs,television shows and movies better.As the saying goes ,life would be very boring with just one color.
English is my cup of tea.
The relationship between English and I is the same as the most favorite boy and I.When I was only 8 years old,the English lessons was given by the only English teacher in our primary school–Mrs.Lo,while sudents from other school may never heard of English!It was so proud for us,naturally.But,I couldn’t realizt its value when I was such young girl.
After 3 years’comfusing English studying,I entered the only school which is specialized in English teaching in my hometown.This school has given to me all things that I need to study English,I must treaure them.Unfortunatly,I just realized all this when I have no chance to treasure them.
Now,I set a high value on the chance on studying English but I have already missed the best time for studying.Nevermind,I’ll try and do my best!
Any discusion about this topic is bond to question the aim of education, one of which is equiping with behaviors of real society. School should offer a true vision of society in miniature and students learn how to behavior in this molden of society. When the time comes for the students to step into the real society, they are fully prepared to behavior in the similar environment. About the future study of English, it totally up to yourself.
As it is said in the article, I am a student with a “so-so” attitude and my English capability is “so-so”. In order to pass the CET-6 and CET-6,I study English in campus. And I think if I am good at English , It will help me to earn a good job. So I will keep learning English.
