MAKE A NEW FRIEND
This is your final and most difficult homework assignment. You have two weeks to complete this assignment.
Introduce yourself to a foreign exchange student who is a complete stranger to you.. Engage in an extended conversation or even an activity such as inviting them to join you at English Corner, go to climb a mountain, go shopping, have lunch or just coffee, etc.
Write a 250 word summary of your experience.
At the beginning of your summary put your new foreign friend’s name, home country and telephone number. Post your summary here.
THE NAME, COUNTRY AND PHONE NUMBER WILL NOT APPEAR ON THE PUBLIC WEB PAGE. The name, country and phone number is required because if I think you are making up a story I will call your new friend.
The foreign exchange students have classes in the same building as HEL both on the 3rd and 4th floors.
Most foreign exchange students also speak English as L2 and will appreciate having a new Chinese friend to practice English. Last semester this was the most successful and appreciated homework assignment. Just read “Holistic English, A Revolution, not an Evolution” to confirm this.

Since the first day I moved into my current dormitory, I knew clearly that I had a big chance to know some foreign friends. Because the apartment building, where I stay now, is just the one for most foreign students, though the foreign and Chinese students stay in separate parts of the building. However, frankly speaking, I failed to do it. So many courses, assignments and experiments cost most of my time. Everyday I went out and came back in haste.
Until yesterday, Amy introduced her new foreign friend Joe to Armstrong and me. Amy met Joe at a party several days ago. One day Amy asked me whether I had time to play badminton with them and she would introduce Joe to me. Of course! I was so glad to know a foreign friend.
Then, yesterday afternoon, we met at the badminton court on the ground-floor of our apartment building. Joe is very handsome and kind, always with a big smile on his face. From the conversation, I learned that Joe is from Britain as an exchange student for one year in China and his major is Business English. And I was wondering as a native English speaker, why he needs to learn Business English. In fact, he felt a little boring about it, so he applied the opportunity to be an exchange student of China. Joe is good at football, which I never played before. Maybe he can be my football teacher someday1.
We had a very nice time together! Such a happy beginning!
Last Saturday, I went to the XiongDelong Student Center to take part in the International Students Cultural Festival and also make friends with a foreigner. Lots of foreigners were there. As a result, I finished the homework. Many foreigners were showing their nature culure. When I came to the place of Turkey, I was attracted by their culture. Their mean culture gave priority to blue colour. I love the colour very much. So I went there and mde friends with them. I talked with one person. He was very friendly. Even he was in China only six months, his Chinese was so good that he could talked with me in Chinese. If there was any difficulty, we talked with each other in English. Quickly I found our common thing, it was sports, especially football. In Turkey, football and basketball were popular. Many young guys play football and basketball as their major activity. I also learned that the mean festival in his country was their National Day, on October 29. And in China, he often went to the playground to play football with many Chinese students. We exchanged our telephone number and name. We made an appointment to play football in the playground some day.
I have made a foreign friend: Mahmoud, born in Syria, learnt in dubai,22 years old, very salt boy with long cilia.
In fact,it was really a long way that I struggled myself to do that.Well,I know that english is important for my future, even before pro.Martin assigned this homework I had tried to make a foreign friend, taught english/chinese for each other. What a pity! There were so many affairs remained to be done, and I really lost several oppotunity. At frist,I joined the chinese festival hold by international students. There were about 20 foreign students but I have not met a proper one–making friends is not like buying bread. Then,I posted notices in No.3 teaching building, but to my disppointment, those notices were vanish but no one called me.At last,I decieded to outreach myself–I went to NO.3 teaching bulilding and made a foreign friend, this was Mahmoud.Interesting and beneficial.
Last Saturday, I went to a party held by SYSU. And I met this guy by chance. We talked about the beautiful pictures shown by the wall. Surrounded by the warm atmosphere, we went into the deep topics about the Muslim world. The signature and the sharp goof impressed me a lot. To my surprise, he said that in their country, a man has only one wife, opposite to my passed opinion. As needed, I asked his phone number and got to know that he was Zafar. Then, a little surprise happened. He gave me his QQ number, making it much convenient to communicate.
Later, we talked on line by QQ. He is very friendly and warm to me. More about him has been got. His major is Organic chemistry, and he connects my major to his easily. For example, he could tell me how organic molecules to be used in coordination chemistry. Chelating agent is often applied in my research area.
And he is good at making fun. He can attract my interest on and off.
What disappointed me is that I can not express my feelings through simple words. Some Chinese words are less active, even misunderstood. However, it is still hard to find a better way to change this situation. And I found it more comfortable and much easier to express my feelings in my mother language.
To sum up, it is nice talking with him. I hope to get more about him.
i am so sorry for late . actually during the past week.I have been out of school for taking a important meeting entitiled “Global Water Forum”in macao.
there are so many Foreign Experts take part in this forum, even some of them is come from the top university in the world such as University of Cambridge,Harvard University and so on.
some tutors taked their postgraduates along with them, wanting them to learn more and widen the range of search. i have the honor of sitting by a student called Louis who come from University of Munich .he told me that he has been studying in the major of water management for five years(it is also my major ). he said china do very well in water management under the deep stress of the large population. all the world is study Chinese management.and he have been china for three times, he has been peking, hongkong, and shanghai, but never been guangzhou. and next month, there are still an important conference hold in guangzhou. if he come ,he will let me know.

it is really a memoric experience !
Last Saturday, there was an International Chinese exchange in Xiong De Long student activity center. The International Chinese exchange began at 3:00 pm. I went there with my classmate on time. There were many students in the student activity center, including Chinese students and foreign student. More than 10 countries’ students assembled there, such as United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, Turkey, Russia, Indonesia, and so on. Each foreign country students displayed their countries’ special cuisine and crafts. I tasted the cuisine of several foreign countries, it was delicious. The crafts looked beautiful and fine. Besides, there were splendid performances of foreign students. Then I cast my eyes on two Russian girls. They looked beautiful with long coiled silver hair and blue eyes. I went up toward them to talk with one girl. The girl’s name is Анастасия. She also has a Chinese name “Nasijia”. We talked with each other happily. So, I asked her mobile phone number and E-mail.After that, I sent her several messages, and we become friend.
When I first received the e-mail and read the assignment, I was little astonished and thought it is a little too stupid for me to do this. Many Chinese students are shy and do not have much confident about their skill of oral English—including me of course. So, it is very difficult for us to do with this, I am just afraid it will be too embarrassed for both of us just standing there and nothing to said—especially when we are stranger…so I just did not finish the homework and did not know how to do.
Thanks to the God, last weekend there was a Chinese culture festival holding in the students’ place. It just provided a place for us to go to make some foreigner students. So I and my doom-mates went to there and had a look. There were so many foreigner students in that place showing their countries’ culture and having fun. At first, we just did not know how to do and stander there, like a fool, watching and listening what people do and what people said. Finally, we caught a man call Ijaz, who is coming form Pakistan. He was very friendly to us and tried his best to introduce his country’s culture and special thing—including their traditional clothes and famous traveling place, mountain. Besides these, he also taught us how to say “hello” and “thank you” in their language—something sound like “ADAB” and “Shukriya”. And he even gave me his QQ number!!
After that, we went to another table and talked to another guy who come from Thailand.Something funny happened. The Thailand boy spoke to us with chinese and we tried to communicated in English. But what ever, it was so funny to talk with people from other country. I think I will try to do this more.
I met her on the side of Yuan Dong Road near East Lake last Sunday when I was back from outside. I saw her and her friend staying there, watching a small cute cat playing and at the same time lending it some food to eat. As I always like small animals, I approached there to see the cute little thing clearly. I immediately noticed that she was a foreigner when she talked to her friend.
“Is it your cat?” I asked
“No,I was watching as well.”She replied.
Then we talked. I found that her English is very good. I told her that I was a post graduate student here and purchasing my further degree. I introduced some thing about my major and my experiment work because she showed some interests in my major subject. Through talking, I got to know that she was a Korean student and study Chinese here. She said that she really want to make some Chinese friends because her Chinese is not so good and she knows little about China and Guangzhou as she has been here just in a short period of time. I was so happy to hear that for I was eagering to make a foreign friend for Mr. Martin had gave us the homework assignment and I also want to know someone abroad and practice my English at the same time. I picked out a notebook out of my bag and we exchanged our names and our telephone numbers. What a pleasant talk! It was the first time that I talk with a foreigner in English for such a long time and I was still thinking and recalling the ideas we had talking about on my way home.
At first, I am sorry that I did the assignment so late.
I live in 351 apartment in the eastern district. It should be said that I have so many and superior chances to make a new friend with a foreign student, for that all or almost all foreign students in Sun Yat-Sen University live in 351. However, For various reasons, I failed in that. What a pity!
Here, I want to thank Mr. Wolff and my friend Amy, Mr. Wolff compelled me to finish my homework, and Amy did me a favor. There hosted the International cultural exchange festival in “XiongDelong” students activity center, it should be a good chance to me, however, I didn’t go there because my supervisor called me to the lab. Luckily, my friend, Amy, joined the party and made a friend with Joe who comes from Britain. In a Conversation, Amy heard my worriment about the assignment, she said Joe liked badminton, so we decided to invite Joe to play badminton together.
Last Saturday afternoon, Joe, Amy, David and I came to the downstairs of 351. Firstly, Amy introduced everyone, and then we had a conversation. The most amazing thing is that Joe could speak a little Chinese though not so fluently, Joe said he was a exchange student, major in business English, and would study in China for one year. When we asked him about his amazing Chinese, he answered that he has learned Chinese before his coming to China, and he was glad to make friends with we Chinese students.
That afternoon, we have a good time and an excellent experience. And we believe we can be good friends. Summarizing our experience in making a foreign friend, I think we are the hosts in China and they are guests, we should be active to entertain them. As Confucius said, friends have come from afar, how happy we are.
I am worried about the homework that the teacher ask me to do .Yesterday I went to the Yingdong Stadium to play basketball. Suddenly I found a foreign man was playing basketball. My homework will be completed. I went to play basketball with him and told him that I want to make friend with him. Firstly I am very shy and don’t know how to communication with him, but he is very friendly and speak English slowly . As the time go by ,I am not nervous. From the talking I knew that his name is Kristian James ,he come from England .He is very tall and he play basketball very well .We talk about the NBA and the star’s kobe. By the way I ask him what do you think the Yaoming. He think Yao is a very good player and he lead the Rockets into the second round of the playoffs. I am surprise that he is know much about Yao. Because he has something else to do ,we each other exchange the phone number ,QQ number and promise to keep in touch with each other
Last week we’ve had a conference for two days about the origin and evolution of the East-Asian flora, they are many Russian experts joined in the conference, they speak English in the conference, and in the following two days went outside to find fossils and to see the mangroves in Zhuhai and Shenzhen. It is a wonderful trip, but fortunatly I forget to find save their contact information of any of them.
On Sunday, I remembered that Martin asked us to find a foreign friend, and I was busy all the last week with the conference, and I hadn’t made a friend yet. Then I turned to my friend Daphne for help, she gave me a QQ number, and told me to contact the foreigner.
After I send a request for adding me as a friend, he agreed. Then we chatted by QQ, he typed in Chinese, and I said I would like to type in English, we agreed on each other.
We exchanged basic information, he was from German and after graduating from university he worked for 4 years, then he came to China to study Chinese. His Chinese name is very interesting, I asked the original meaning, he told me he changed the syllables of Michael and his Chinese name came out. And I also told him the story about my name.
I found his Chinese is good from his writing, but he said his pronunciation is not so good, and I said my oral English is also not good, and we can help each other. And he also figured out some of my mistake in my sentences.
After he knew I am major in palaeobotany, he was very curious about our research, I invited him to our museum so I could interpret the fossils to him, and we make an appointment in this week. I benefit a lot from the conversation, he is very kind ,and I am looking forward to his visit to our museum.
Frankly speaking,it is probably accidental that I make a new friend with a foreigner. Some days ago,my classmates and I took part in the international culture festival, our primay intention is for different country’s delicious food rather than making a new friend. So,we searched dilicious food as soon as we arrive at Xiong DeLong activities center. At there,we found a large many food, for example, the Russia bread, the Corea pickled vegetable and so on.When we had eated some different national food and were preparing to leave,I was attracted by the soulful dance in the front of Pakistan booth. Then I directly walked toward the booth, there are two people who gave me a warm reception. One people passed me a Pakistan flag which consisted with a moon and star.Another people introduced me to the pictures which were famous scenic spots or buildings. And then,we talked about Pakistan educational system,I known that Pakistan had different educational system with China from the young Pakistanis.Mybe my action inspired his passion.Interestingly,he taught some idioms in his native language—Urdu. These Urdu sentences meaning were simple and commonly uesd, for example,”Hello”,”Think you”in English. However,it is too diffcult for me to learn the correct pronunciation,so I had to give up it.I felt particularly interesting that talking with him,so I asked his name and telephone number. He told me that his name was IJAZ and his telephone, moreover,he told me that had made some friends with Chinese. Fortunately,I easily made a new friend with a foreigner. If I have time,I will invited him to take part in our activity and keep touch with him.
At first,I a bit refused to do this homework asignment for the consideration that those foreign exchange students would be afraid to spread their private materials through us.And they must had been bothered so much with so many chinese students going up to them for asking something like this or that from them on the road, especially when they were hurry to their classes or something urgent. But even though I had so many anxious and fears,I must finish Pro.Martin’s work.So I reluctantly went to the third teaching buiding and waited out of the door of classroom. It was difficult to stop a stranger at first,so I decided to halt a kind-looking man(I was to shy to talk with a girl, not to mention a totally stranger one,and the one is a pretty foreign one.Anyway, let’s start from easy task.).Within minutes, there came a plump man with a moustache. His eyes looked amiable and he was smiling all the way. What was more, there wre no others around him,and I can stop his way without disturbing any more people.Good chance. So I pourd the theenglish words out of my mouth(I thought all foreigners in China should speak english because they could not speak chinese.).I said,”Excuse me,could you spare some time….I’d like you to give me your phone number…Sorry…”.But you guess what? When finally stopped, with my face red,the kind man said to me with more smile on his face,”你好,你可以说中文吗?(That means“Could you speak chinese, please?”)”Oh,my god.All of my impression about foreginers was suddenly subvered!I could not express my confound any more!At last I got my homework asignment finished with the help of the kind man.I was moved with his kindness help so I let him went into his classroom for the class.I knew we would be very good friends in the future.
Michael is a shy boy from Vietnam, a country just next to China. There is a funny story before we know with each other.
Every time I am free, I will go to the Lingnan library to see some books I am interested in. And one day, I came across an student that looked at me strangely. I was very unhappy, what a rude man! And I gave him a supercilious look too. But suddently, He spoke to me in bad Chinese,”你好”! I was very surprised, because I did not know that he was a foreign student, he looked just like our Chinese! And I said, ”你好,你是?” he smiled like a kid, and said in simple English, “I am Michael, from Vietnam, my Chinese is not good, either with my English!” He was so interesting, that made me feel very fresh. And then we started to talk. In fact, he had some relatives in China. These simple Chinese words are the relatives that taught him. The idea that He came to china was the his father’s idea.
I have never talked to an exchange before, because I thought that they were inaccessible. but Michael tell me that when you do it ,you find it. Now, we have exchanged our Phone number and QQ, which helps us to contract with each other more conveniently.
It was so wired that the homework was to make friends with ex-change students.how can I to do? Speak to a foreigner in english!!”Excesue me!can we make friends?”No,no,they would be thought the person must be abnomal! But I had to do the homework.I had no idea with it.My classmates advised to the 3rd floor of that building.Last week,we went there ,waiting the HE class over. After the class, many ex-change students were out of the class, most of them are Asian, Caucasian.Sudenly I was anxious because I didn’t kown how to take the first step. Therefore I waited.Jo was the first person who made friends with a foreign girl. Then several classmates had found their aims.I looked round that there were some guys who were not far from me.I saw one of my classmates went toward them. Then quickly she talked with a handsome boy.I knew I must do something. The boy looked like very kind and friendly. So I went toward them.I smile to them. Then my classmate intruduced me. I said to him:I want to be your friend too.”The boy laughted, then said:me too. Out of my surprise,we talked happily. He introduced himself:He came from Russian, used to live in Moscow before he came to China. He told us he liked china very much ,and wanted to travel whole china. It was very interesting that he speaked in chinese. At last, he wrote his tele number for me.Friday,I invited him to have dinner in sunshine canteen.During the dinner, I teached him chinese and told some jokes about English .It is a funny time. Now ,thanks to professor Martin, thank you for assign the homework.because I know it’s nothing to warry about my spoken English and foreigners also want to be friends with us.so funny!
It’s really a difficult task for a chinese student to make a friend with a foreigner forwardly.when we received this homework ,we just think it’s a joke, whenever there are some foreigner students walking on the road, we really want to have a talk with them .but before we can make a decision ,they has gone.
The chance coming in the end .we joined a party which hold by the International School last week.oh ,there were so many foreigners ,they introduced their culture food and so on .of course ,I got my homework with the helping of a foreigner friend。
For he looks like a chinese ,so I had thought he is a chinese.so I ask him :请问你是国际交流学院的学生吗?he replied in a curt chinese:是的。I realized that he must be an Asian foreigner,so I asked him :”where are you come from .” he replied :“I come from Thailand”oh,“really!”I show my great interest.and then we talk about many questions.such as :why do you come to our country ?how do you think about our university ? the girl of your country are very beautiful . we even talk about the Nong Poy .it’s very interesting to talk with a real foreigner.
I have studied English for more than ten years, but it is not until that day did I recognize what does English, especially speaking and listening English bring to me.
Last week, our speaking English teacher, Professor Martin, assigned us a homework, which asked us to make a new friend with foreign exchange student who is a complete stranger to us, and fortunately, when I was having supper in a small restaurant that day, there came a foreigner. On remembering the homework professor Martin assigned us, I asked him:”Do you like the food here?” He, looked at me surprisingly, answered:” not very, it is too hot.” So I asked the attendant for a cup of tea, and gave it to him. After that, we communicated with each other for at least half an hour, we got some personal information from each other first, and then I knew he was an American and was studying treaty in Sun Yat-sun University now. And we talked about China’s Business, Obama’s receiving the Nobel prize and the Guangzhou’s weather and girls. After our meal, we paid for our food together and we gave our telephone number to each other at last. And we become good friends now!
I am sorry for posting my comment so late! Because of shyness, I could not find an exchange student friend until tonight-my roommate’s advertisement finally worked. Things went like this. My roommate also took the Holistic English course and was also troubled by finding a foreign friend. Finally, she came up with a good idea of how to find a foreign friend. She wrote an advertisement expressing her intention of making friend with an exchange student. She printed out the advertisement and posted it in bill boards around all the cafeterias in our campus. Five days went by but nobody called. When we were so disappointed, a text came and said in Chinese Pinyin-’wanshang keyi yiqi chifan ma’, which means shall we have dinner together tonight? We were so excided!
Then tonight we met this handsome boy Sidhi whose mother is Chinese and father is Indonesian, and went to his dorm to have a chat. He is outgoing and very nice. He showed us his pictures taken in Macao, his favourite city. He thought the scenery there was great. When talking about culture gap, he took the example of his mum. He thinks his mum is ancient people because she always urges him to go back home earlier, which is frustrating for a 27-year-old clubby man.
Tonight is full of fun and we will meet in few days to have dinner together.
It was for the first time I was trying to make friends with a foreigner. Of course it was really hard for me to do that. Though I am a boy, I struggled a lot and at last I made up my mind to finish the last homework.
Just a few days after the class, I was studying in the library. A girl sitting in front of me answered a phone call in Japanese, which made me think that she was a Japanese girl. So I nerved myself and gave her a piece of paper saying: “Can we be friends?”She was really angry and she stared at me for a while and then went away.
Oh my God! How foolish I have been! I was not that kind of person! I just wanted to make a new friend, not another girl friend!
So I cared more about my words. I met a black man on a bus, we talked a lot and we exchanged our phone number, but since he was not a student of SYSU, I was looking forward to another try.
On November 21, there was a international culture exchange festival held in XiongDeLong students activity center. I went there with my friends. Again we were on ours mettle and we met our new friend: Joe
Joe is a tall and handsome young boy who comes from Britain. We talk something about his country, hobbies and his feeling of living and studying in China. We also talked about China and Chinese food. Together we had a very good time. At last we exchanged our phone numbers and we promised to keep in touch with each other.
It’s really helpful for us to make new friends with foreigners for learning English. And I am sure that I will make more foreigners becoming my friends in future.
To make friends with foreigners seem to be very difficult, but teacher gave us an e-mail, let us go to make friends with foreigners. When I see this message,I think I might able to fulfill it.Because I have never looked for a foreigner to make friends, and because my English is not good, pronunciation is not accurate, so I’m afraid to exchange with foreigners, but I have to finish it.
In our school there are many students from different countries, which gives us conditions to complete the job. That day, we do not have classes, when my classmates and I chated and walked the road on the campus, just see a foreign girl on the roadside,so we went in front of her, and said hello to her.The beginning, she did not understand what we need to do, and later, we told her we just wanted to make friends with her, then she understood what we say, showing a friendly smile. She said she was very fond to make Chinese friends, and she has a lot of Chinese friends,so learn Chinese very convenient, and she would like us to teach Chinese too.We talked very happy, but because she had things to do, so she left, but she left us with a phone number, hoping to be able to frequent contact.
I am really glad that can make a foreign friends, and she is also willing to be my friend. This is an unforgettable experience, and made me understand that things are not hard to do before, there are still many possibilities.
This term our school has three exchange student, one of them is Simon who is very tall, about 193cm. As a very short girl, I still remember the first time I talked to him, “What do your world look like as a tall man, is it far different from that of mine.” Then he laughed. It was in the course that we talked for a while. 21th Nov is the second Sino-German conference on geographical higher education, research and application. That day I met him in the meeting because I was a volunteer there and he is a participant. I came up and said hello to him and said ” If you have time, would you like to have a coffee or dinner with me because our English teacher encourage us to make friends and there is homework?” I was so ashamed that my face turned red because I hardly invite a boy to dinner, especially a foreigner. “Of course I’d love to, you know, many students come to me, your English teacher is very good and because of him I make a lot friends now.” I was so happy and made a appointment next day.
The next day because there was a party during the conference, so we changed our plan and go to party, the other two exchange came with him, and I also called some of my classmates. During the dinner we talked together in English but sometimes in Chinese, they urged to learn Chinese, Ocean said” Chinese is too hard for us to learn, but because of you there days I learn more words.” Then he showed us what he learns. To my surprise, he said “Se liang”, the word meant a boy who like girls’ body instead of her soul, and he continue” it means colorful wolf, hahaha….Is there another words the same meaning but describing woman?” One of my classmate said ”se nv”. When we learn a new language, the first word we learn may be bad word or dirty word, as we learn sometimes from the movies. And we talked a lot, it was funny and we made friends.
This is really a nice day! This afternoon, I and my classmates took part in the international culture festival, I have to say, the main reason for joining in the festival is not for finishing Professor Martin’s homework, but for experience the feeling of making a friend with a foreigner! When we arrive at Xiong DeLong activities center, it was 4 o’clock, there were so many foreigners, UK, Japan, South Korea, Turkey, Russia, Indonesia, etc. All of them dressed in clothes from their own countries, all of them were so happy, it is really a carnival! We wanted to speak to a native English speaker, oh, we were so lucky that there were two English gentlemen! We spoke to the younger one, his name is Joe, from the middle city of England, he was an exchange student of University of Nottingham (a famous school in England) , his oral Chinese was pretty good, and he could even write 800 Chinese words! He said he had learned Chinese for 1 year before going to China. He only had come to China for 3 months, and he visited Beijing and wants to pay a visit to Xi’an for pottery figures of warriors and horses in Mausoleum of First Emperor of Qin. Then we talked about our favorite sports, he liked playing football and badminton. I will date him to playing badminton next week, because there are so many works I have to do this week. After that, I had a photo taken with a pretty Russia girl, her sweat smile almost melted me! I will never forget this day and these people, never!
This week I have make three new friends, two exchange foreign students, one my schoolmate.
Just accurate as MW had said, this was the most difficult homework assignment. When my roommates and my classmate finished their homework, I still found no way to begin with. AS the deadline had been past, I felt a little nervous and decided to make a friend at the third teaching building. When I reached, I found no student in it, I looked at the bulletin and there was a message on it read “making friends” and a phone number leave there, I wrote down. Later I sent message to the phone number, no replay. Half a day later, I decided to make a call to him, feeling a shy, I dialed, waiting intensely, if he answered in English, what would I do?But no one answer it. About an hour later, he sent me a message, read “hallo” in Chinese. I was so glad that I replay immediately, and he keep replay to me for each message. When I found that he is a Chinese, I can hardly stand to laugh, and I known that I had made a very humorous mistake. I asked him “ do you mind to be a friend of mine”, and he answered me with this “ why not”, this made me feel really comfortable, and we chat a lot, I learned that she is a girl and major in biochemistry and she was getting a flu. At that night we chat online for nearly one and half an hour. It was very interesting to chat with her, I think we will go to the English corner this Wednesday.
Benefit from this experience, I ask my roommates for more number. I sent message to them, they all made a good replay. We chat a lot, and found many interest things to talk about, and I learned a lot from them , as well as they do. This weekend I would go to the SCAU to meet Izader.
Last Wednesday night, after I finished my lab research task, I went to English corner once again to improve my oral English and meet some new friends. When I got there, there had been so many people talking ardently in groups that you could hear the English-speaking voice a few miles away. I saw some black men there, too. They must be exchange students. So I went to one of them who had already talked with two Chinese young ladies and a Chinese handsome man. First, I asked them if I could join them and they were very pleased to let me in. Then I introduced myself to them and they introduced themselves, too. So the black handsome man was called Joe, who came to China to study medicine. As he knew only a few Chinese and all his Chinese medical professors could speak little English, so he had to study Chinese for one year. So far, as he knew that he was the only man who came from Ghana, he liked to meet as many friends as possible here, especially some Chinese friends, who could help him to improve his oral Chinese! I knew that there was a Chinese corner every Friday night at the building of international Chinese college. So I invited him to go to the Chinese corner and made a joke to him saying that if he wanted someone to translate Chinese into English in order to study Chinese more easily, he could hire me! I could be his best translator! He laughed and said he would think it twice.
After that, we talked more. He told us something about Ghana and we told him something about China. As a local Cantonese, I also told him something about Guangzhou. As Asian Olympic Game will be held in Guangzhou next year, I suggested that he should bring some friends from Ghana to Guangzhou and enjoy the big game together. He was very glad and said he would do whatever he can to invite his Ghanaian friends to China. Also he invited us to Ghana and we were very pleased to go someday.
Time had passed so quickly that we couldn’t notice that it had been very late when we talked. So we exchanged our phone number and then said goodbye to each other. What a wonderful night! I hope I could have more experience meeting some new foreign friends.
I hold the opinion that “Late better than never”.Today, i think it’s time to post my summary now.Last week my professor held the sino-russian seminar on evolution and development of Eastern Asian Flora based on palaeobotanical data. Two days are spend in meeting in meeting room and three days going outside for field investigation.During this experience,i realize that how important it is that english as an international means of communication.
This week i was eagaged in the homework assignment of making friends with a foreign student here.At last,of course,i made it.All roads lead to Rome.I know his QQ from my labmate and then communicate with him .His name is Michael,a german student here. His major in germany is economy and study chinese one year in china.I also asked the reason why he came to china, and he said he has a girl friend living here.He is man keeping regular hours.everynight he will study a bit afer 11:00 and go to bed,get up at 6 am every morning.we also discussed something about study and i know that we like math for its pureness and ability to reduce complexity of prolem.
Today,he came to our museum and we met the first time.he came with his russian friend.they are both funny and easygoing.we spend amost two hours in the museum.During our communication,we four chinese student use d every means possible to explain the new things.this experience is very interesting and precious.
What a different mission it was! I was asked to make a new foreigner friend. I haven’t talked with a foreigner before. Fortunately I have the chance to finish it. I heart from my roommate Terry that there was a Chinese Corner on Friday, but at that time I had something more important to do. It is about 20:30, when I finished my own case. But I remembered that day is the deadline of the mission, so I went there just by a chance to make a foreigner friend but unluckily I hadn’t found Terry and our friends. After I found a corner and sat down, I found the topic is about Chinese zodiac, which I am interested in. I hadn’t forgotten my aim to make a new friend, so I searched my target. I found a black man in front of me, so I went to talk with him using “hello” as the beginning. He smiled shyly and said “hi” to me. Then I introduced myself and my mission to him. He smiled again, showing his white tooth, and told me that there were three students who asked him the same question a few minutes before. Oh, they were my friends, I said to Maurice. And he gave his information immediately. The republic of sierra Leone, oh, I hadn’t heard it before. So, he talked about his country, western Africa and with its capital Freetown. After that, we talk about today’s topic, and I knew he was born in 1975, the year of the rabbit, while mine was tiger, and 11 years older than me. His Chinese is poor and he came to China only a few days. I would like to be his guild when he needed. Maurice talked about the highest college in his country, Fourah Bay College. And the time is over, we had to say goodbye. We promised that we would come to the Chinese Corner again together when we are all free. What a amazing day, I knew a foreigner friend!
It was last Tuesday afternoon, Wally, Andy and I went to the third Teaching Building to search a foreign friend. It could be interesting, excited and challenging. What would happen if I stood in front of a foreigner? You know, I had never talked much to a foreign stranger and what’s more, I should get his/her cell phone number.
When we got to the right third Teaching Building, they were in their class. Then we walked around. There was signal of school of international community over each classroom, and two small squares at the end and beginning of the passageway. We sat there and waited the class break. A few minutes later, the bell rang and many people got out taking a rest. Then we went to a group of three male students. “Hello, nice to meet you.” “Hello.” they looked at us with confused expressions in their eyes. “We are Chinese students and our English teacher left us homework to make friends with foreigners, so…” “Oh, oh, yes, I know, I know. Just practice your English. It is OK.” Then we talked something about our hometown and I knew that one was from Spain, and other two were Kazakhstan and Palestinian, respectively. But just a moment later, the bell rang again and they had to back to class. We didn’t talk deeply and get their phone numbers.
Then we waited again. It was just after we walked about and back to the square, there were two young and handsome men sit beside the baluster, one looks very younger, the other one have a whiskers. At the beginning it was just like what happened just now that we got each other’s name. They said that they had been in China for four months; as a result, their Chinese were not very good. We talked about our hometown ourselves’. Andy who was from Guangxi province introduced Guilin city to them and advised they take a journey to. But they just gave a smile. Maybe they had heard nothing about this city and Beijing or Shanghai was more attractive. They knew little about china and just had arrived Hongkong and Guangzhou. In the end, they left their telephone number and E-mail address to us so that we could communicate as much as possible.
Last year since being a volunteer of Business English Salon I had several chances to get acquainted with some international students. It was very fun to talk with them at first. To my supervise language was not the gap between us, there was totally no need to be afraid that my English was too poor to talk with these international students, instead some of them even had poorer English than us. We could use body language or even Chinese to communicate. However gradually I found that the difference of culture was the real gap between us. We always found it seemed no common topic between us and I could not adapt to the ways they treat with opposite sex, at that that time I thought it was a little dangerous to make friends with international students and I gave up and started to avoid meeting them, at last I lost those gays and I always regret.
However, this semester after I got the assignment of Pro Martin, I had no choice but to try again. Last Thursday two of my classmates and I went to Business English Salon again and there were four international students there to give lectures about their countries or EU, I found it was very new to me and so interesting. Since I was curious about EU I made some difficult questions, the lecturer was so kind that even some of my questions really puzzled him. During the free talk time, we continued our discussion and it was the first time I found that we-international students and Chinese students might be true friends. Then I knew he came from Estonia and his Chinese name was “Baidelong”named by his Chinese teacher and meant “a noble dragon”. In the next week, we went to restaurant together and I introduced him the knowledge of Chinese food and even helped his poor Chinese, although actually it was really hard. To me it is not just to make an international friends but a chance to recognize that even culture difference will not be the obstacle between us.
Something just happened out of my expectations this Monday. I cannot find a foreign friend in our school last week. Dramatically, one foreign friend responded to an advertisement made by my friend this Monday. So I went to meet the new friend with her and another my friend. Our new friend is Sidhi, a half-bleed boy from Indonesia. His mother is Chinese, and he can also speak Chinese. He invited us to his dormitory, a small but clean one. When he opened the door, we smelt fragrance. Later he explained that he liked to use balm for no reasons. Our conversation is almost about travelling. He travelled to many places including many countries in Asia. We can see that from the pictures on the wall. One was taken in Guilin, one was his portrait that was drawn in Shenzhen. For himself, his favorite place was Macau because of the beautiful scenery. He showed us a lot of photos taken in Macau and told us that he would go to that tourist resort again. When we mentioned the culture gap, he took his mother as example. He thought his mother was like ancient people because she behaved conservatively.
Whatever, it was a wonderful night. The conversation was full of fun.
In fact, when I got this task from Professor Martin, I thought this is the most difficult assignment I have ever received. But I really got a totally different experience that I will never forget. I am not a shy girl, but only shy in English. I complained it several times to my closed friends, but to my surprise, they all told me you will never know something that you never do, even the foreigners will become your friends initiatively as soon as you show your charming dimples. So I decided to finish this ‘simple’ task. I met this girl really occasionally in the Park Supermarket twice, once is the moment I was choosing acidophilus milk when I heard she is speak Korean next to me, I really want to say Korean ‘안녕하세요’ to her which means hello, but at that time I suddenly forgot it; And the other time is in the lift, I just remember that Korean word, so I begin this talk with ‘안녕하세요’ which made her really surprised. After, we communicated with each other sometimes in English, and sometimes in Chinese on the way back to school. I knew that she has been to Guangzhou just for several months and lived in the campus as a teacher in some other training schools, and I found she is a very lovely girl that she told me such funny experience she met here because of the different culture, etc. Finally I do finish this task unbelievablely. I have learnt a lot from this task because I know that sometimes things are not difficult unless you do it.
Professor, I don’t understand why you don’t let my post on even this is a true story, and I already post it for more than 5 times. Please!
I missed the Foreign Exchange Student Festival, I hadn’t got the courage to say “Hi” to a total strange foreign students on the street, and I didn’t know any foreigners for my 23 years’ life —— Which made me believe that I would fail this homework. However, my luck changed just yesterday.
I am a tennis fan. I always practice my tennis with my partner. I went to the tennis court as usual yesterday afternoon. My partner told me she would be late for a while, so I practice my servers alone. A stranger came to asked me if he could practice with me and I said OK. At the beginning, I thought he was from Guangdong or some place in the southern China. Because he was black and had a strong accent. When we went to break we had a chat. I was so surprise to find that he was from Thailand, not China! How strange that a foreigner talk to you with fluent Chinese so that you didn’t even know he was a foreigner! He told me it was popular to speak Chinese in his hometown. I asked him if he could speak English, he said yes. We spoke to each in English for a while and both of us laughed. He praised my tennis skills and asked me if I was willing to join in his morning practice on 6:00-8:00 A.M. I never got up so early, but for the homework, I accepted. We exchanged our phone number, he told me his Chinese name —— Ruan Junying.
Next morning, both of us went to the court, we played a little longer. For the break this time we talked more about tennis. He was beginner of 6-months. I was a little surprised for his skill far beyond that. Each of us was happy to make a new friend —— and a new partner.
It’s such a fun experience to play with a foreigner, and also a cheerful experience to end my homework with a new friend.
EDITOR’S NOTE:
THIS POSTER DID NOT FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS AND MAKE A FRIEND WITH A FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT.
The reason why I complete this homework so late is that I want to make a foreign friend by myself who is worth to be a friend of mine.I don’t want to get a foreigner’s email from my classmates or stop a foreign student by the road for his/her telephone number.I am glad that I have perfectly done my homework.Today I went to the BaiYu Hotel to attend the 5th
International workshop on Marine Environmental Changes of the South China Sea.During the meeting,I know the Mr Rob Holmes, who is a Marine Ecosystem Modeller in Plymouth Marine Laboratory in United Kingdom. He gave us a remarkable speech “Modelling the Global Coastal Ocean and Predicting the Consequences of climate change on Fish Production. He is very kind and handsome. So I asked him to be my friend at lunch. He agreed.I was so happy. This is my first foreign friend.
Today I send an email to Rob for inviting him to our university for a visit. It’a s shame that he can’t come because of plane.
Maybe I can go to United Kingdom to see him.
My friend is a international change student who is called Brad coming from USA, His major is economics in the Department of Economic Management. One day, when I had to decide to go to the student’s canteen to have supper, I felt some pity because I didn’t like the food. Yet some things may be happened, the moment when I sit in the chair, I found a handsome and strong foreigner student beside me, and in front of him was a charming Chinese girl. They were talking with each other exciting and laughed sweet occasionally. As they just sit beside me, some words were come through my ears. They were curious by one food which looks like one such of fruit jelly. Of course I knew what it was, which is called guilinggao in China. Then I told them its name. They were very happy to talk with me.
Times flied so soon, and I had to came back because of burden homework. We all felt deep pity for that, so we changed our e-mail address.
I sent a e-mail for him in my spare time, and received his replay very soon, in the letter he told me he came from New York state in the USA, and he was from a town called Baldwin on Long Island, which is a suburb of New York City. Compared to the city it is a small and quiet down that is not very crowded. He said he really like China, because Chinese people are so friendly. And there are also many interesting places to see. He also likes Chinese food. He joked he had a belly because I have eaten so much good food and gotten fat!
Things are seemingly to interesting, and we will keep in touch with each other.
I met her in the international culture communication on Saturday. She was in blue kimono in the crowd. The Japanese were busy with introducing their culture and there were many kids and persons around them. Then , I saw the photos on the wall that were something about Japanese in the Japan Day. That seems really fascinating. I was very interested in the special festival in Japan. So I found the lovely girl and asked her something about Japan Day. During the talk , I know the festival is very important for Japanese. Although the festival is not on the same day in different areas, general in August, they celebrate it ceremonious. They wear kimonos which are Japanese national character and are not dressed in ordinary days now. They sing and dance that day and there are many funny games or stalls such as Kingyo Sukui on the stresses. Some areas will set off fireworks near the bank. What a bustling day it is!
Then I saw their gadget which is made by wood. it is a red ball and the handle with a rope. The red ball can be jump on to the handle which is 4 place. And the game was difficult to me but seemed like quite easy for them. And finally, I still couldn’t do it.
She told me that she would leave China back to Japan two months later. It sounds like a pity. But I would get tough with the good girl with MSN.
Making a friend from a foreign country is a fresh assignment for me. I think I can learn new customs and knowledge form him. Moreover, it is good opportunity to improve my oral English.
So I went to XiongDelong Student Center to take part in the International Students Cultural Festival. Many foreign students showed their talents and introduced their cultures to our Chinese students there. That is a splendid party. But I was litter shamed because I never have an experience to make a foreign friend.
By watching for a while, I observed that foreign students are friendly hoping to make friends with us. I found a boy called Izard from Pakistan speaking Chinese fluently. I walked to him and introduced myself to him in English expressing my intention to be his friends. He was very pleased to make a friend with me. We talked about each other’s hobby. I told him I love watching football and playing computer games. Fortunately, he is also crazy about computer game. I found he speaks Chinese very well. So I asked about the method to learn a foreign language. He told me that his method is to try his best to speak more. He encouraged me to speak English in everyday life and think in English. That night, we became good friends. We exchanged our cell phone numbers and promised to keep in touch with each other. He is an easy going boy and we spent a fruitful night together.
Chirsmas day is coming. Why not prepare some cultural presents for our foreign friends?
Actually I know Kuboo 2 years ago when I played basketball with my friends. He played awesome and seemed laughing so happily with his friends. He was shining and I could do nothing except watching him.
Since the homework assignment of making a new friend, I finally nerved myself to say hi to him and even got to know that he have noticed me some time before. He agreed to have dinner with me without much hesitation. We, as well as a friend of mine, went to a café in the Zhonghua Square. Kuboo speaks fluently Chinese, thus it is not hard for us to communicate.
I get to know that he also likes skateboard and taking photo of himself when attending some events. I have to admit that there is indeed a great cultural difference between China and Japan, especially in the dimension of viewing work, study and entertainment. Though he does not much like what I thought, his humor and optimistic attitude influence me very often. It is an impressive dinner, even though we do not contact at all after then.
When I knew this homework which we should make a friend with a foreigner I was very worried, because my English and the ability of communication is bad.So I decided to make a new friend through my fellow-villager who is studying in the foreign language institute.I knew Heweixuan by this way.
Heweixuan is a extravert opposite to me.When I meeted him first time I was a little nervous, but he was very generous and shaked hands with me.Than we had a dinner together outside north door of sysu.In the time of eating,I asked lots of questions to him,it just liked that I was a reporter and he was a star that I should know things about him as more as possible;but after that he did the same thing to me.From that he was come from Busan which is a port city and his parents came to guangzhou two years ago to make business,so he came to here too.He said he will go back to his hometown about two years,so he wants to learn some chinese culture and chinese, and he decides to make business with chinese just like his father. And now he can say some easy sentences in chinese, such as”hello, how much is it..etc”.In a word,we had a happy dinner together.
I thank Martin who give us the chance to make a new friend.I will keep touch with Heweixuan, and I promised him I will take him to my hometown to have a nice journey.
Two of weeks ago I heard there was a foreign student culture festival held in Xiong Delong Building. Since I wanted to know a foreign student for this assignment, I said to myself, why not go there and have some fun. So I went to there with my classmate. There were many people when we got there, both Chinese and foreign people. We noticed that a lot of foreign food was offered, and we were curious about how this food taste like, so we tried some. I must admit that some of the food didn’t taste that well, while some are delicious. Actually my classmate knew a foreign student before, his name is Rocky and he was from Indonesia. After a while we found him, along with his friends. Compared with other foreigners, he looks just like we Chinese, and he speaks Chinese very well, too. We talked with Rocky and his friends, in Chinese and in English. He told us a lot of how they live in Indonesia, the culture, the food, everything. And we told him a lot about China, too. He even give us some food which they ate in Indonesia, it tasted special, but not bad. We had a very good time together.
In the noontime of November 26th , Thursday,I came to my college building and found a group of students were talking to a blond who was about 30 years old . I thought that the foreigner may have some trouble or need my help. So I came up and asked what I can do for her. After a conversation I knew that she was a exchange student and she was waiting for a Professor . she is a German and her name is Lieve Joris.
That professor was still on class at that time. so I invited her to wait for at our office and have a cup of tea. Then we had a chat about something like hometown ,geography and the projects that I was working on now. when talked about Zhongshan city in Guangdong province , she told me that she had just come from there several days ago. And the city is all brand new and many new tall buildings were under construction. It’s too fast and amazing. Then we chatted about the environment of some cities in Pearl delta in Guangdong province. And I told her that why the sea water of the cities in the east shore is cleaner that the west shore. But I lost my confidence suddenly because my specialty terms were not enough to express. Fortunately I have a map in my office and I can explain the question to her by pointing to the map.
we talked so happily that I nearly forgot that she was waiting for someone. So I came out and asked someone that if professor Li was out of class or not. He was still on class and I can talk more to my new friend and know more about her and her country. So I asked her why her English is so good ? How to learn English as a L2. Then she said just like Martin said : you must speak English beside reading , just to talk in English with others , you can learn it from movies and songs and newspapers.
When we talked about the culture invade when we all learn English and lost our Chinese tradition, she didn’t think so. Because learning English is just a communication tool and make us understand each other better. And the reality is here we can’t change something that had happened just like China is strong. I learned much from her words.
Suddenly Professor Li came in my office and said sorry to Lieve Joris that he was late for nearly 30 minutes .Lieve Joris said that it’s ok because she have had a meaningful talk with me. Li gave me a look with amazing and said thank you . I was so glad and flattered. Thanks Lieve Joris , She told me that English is very important and useful. When we separated , Lieve Joris told me that I should make friends with more foreign students because them wants to communicate and need friends eagerly.
Make a new foreign friend is a unfamiliar and difficult assignment to me, but fortunately, International Chinese had hold a international culture day for to promote communion between Chinese and foreign students, it was a good opportunity to finish the assignment.
When I wanted to look for a foreign friend, some of classmates had found foreign friends. And they invited their foreign friends to joined in the international culture day together. I went to Xiongdelong Hall with my classmates. First, I wanted to find a foreign friend lonely, but I failed. I went to two foreigner and want to talk with them, but my English was so poor, they didn’t understand what I said. At this time, classmates’s friends had arrived. We introduced myself. All of them came from Africa, them could speak English expertly. But they couldn’t speak Chinese. Then, we tasted some “delicious food” which were produced by foreign students, but I though, it was not delicious, it was unsavoury.
I meet Rooty in the badminton court in Yingdong gymnasium on last Saturday morning. I went with my friends but he came alone. At first I did not know that he was not a Chinese until he come to us saying in Chinese that was not so fluent: can we play together? We said yes of course. And I had my mind from inner: That’s him, haha! Excellent choice to meet professor’s assignment. So I talked to him much more than others and we became friends quickly. In the conversation I knew that Rooty came from Japan last year, and I was wondering why did he come to sysu instead of the much better Japanese colleges, but he just smiled and said something else( maybe it was secret he didn’t want to reveal). Easily Rooty accepted my invitation of going for a dinner in Suiyuan beside the North Gate.
Getting along with Rooty was something happy because his Chinese was extremely good in foreigners and Rooty himself was a funny person. We talked about Sado in Japan comparing Gongfu Tea in China; we talked about the H1N1 virus spreading around the world; at last I asked Rooty that if he could do me a favor to answer professor’s call and he readily promised. Done! It was the most happy thing I have get today.
And soon Rooty said that he had to go because he have a date with somebody. Wow~~ I said I should wish you good luck!
I almost have racked all my own brains to make some foreign freinds. My classmate told me a number and intrduced him to me who comes from Pakistan. The boy was a little shy. Pakistan ,the nationality soon reminds me the movie Ganhdi and Hindus and Muslims. But I knew that it was impropriate to talk about that. So I said: Your great country sent all your millitary helicopters and tents to help us the WenChuan Earthquake, I must show my greatest appriation to you for it. And if wish,I want invite you to dinner someday later. He laughed and said thank you. His English and Chinese both were not so good. We talked about the daily life and met some troubles in communicating. But it was a pleasant experience.
I also found some friend through MSN. Like Laura,a UK girl, who loves msn and starbucks.
On July 2006,after our practical training in Tree Gorges,I joined in tour group to travel Jiuzhai valley with two friends. In this tour group,we made an acquaintance with two girls, they were Korean exchange students in the Beijing University of Aronautics and Astronautics, and took advantage of summer holiday to travel.I was asked to play a role as a dedicated photographer for them, and at last
cheated one girl out of her MSN.
During these weeks,I had been sent to The Bureau of Geology for Nuclear Industry on Huadu District
and mined the data of bores. The week before last I connected with her through the MSN,and told her my difficulty. She promised to introduce her fellow townsman to me,and gave me her MSN and phone number.I got through to her,and it’s so happened that she worked in Guangzhou but lived in Huadu District.Under my importune request, she gave me a nod for having a Chinese dinner with me.
Last Tuesday’s evening,we got to the restaurant in the same building with the bureau of geology. She said she had learned Chinese for two years, and her Chinese is unquestionably as same as my classmate-Prince,a Dongguan boy whose Mandarin is poor.Though I wanted to pass this task by speaking Chinese at first, she said she had caught on to my purpose from her friend and was willing to converse in English. She forestalled me to ask my acquaintance with South Korea,I used the comment on the Internet to reply. She became unhappy and told me that South Korea is unlike which was exaggerated by TV dramas and was smeared by the Internet in China. And then, she told some things what I didn’t know on and on,such as,competition of university entrance examination in South Korea is not weak than one in China.
After the dinner, she told me she had some work to finish, said goodbye to me and wished I would not get “F”.
THIS THREAD IS NOW CLOSED PERMANENTLY BECAUSE MORE THAN 150 OF YOU COULD NOT READ AND FOLLOW BASIC INSTRUCTIONS THAT HAVE CAUSED AN EXTREME WASTE OF MY TIME. SOME OF YOU HAVE IGNORED MY EMAILS AND POSTED IMPROPERLY AS MANY AS 5 TIMES.
On Saturday, it was the International Students Cultural Festival in the XiongDelong Student Center, and there were lots of people celebrating the festival, including lots of foreigners and Chinese. Of course it was an opportunity to make friends with foreigners for us. I went there happily, because there were much delicious food from many different countries. I first went to the Korean Place. I saw many classmates standing together with a man. I got around him too. I asked his name and his country. And he told me that his name is Oxana, from Russia. He was so happy, because so many people talked to him. And there were few persons talking to him before. He always felt lonely, and he wanted to communicate with Chinese. He came to China, because he liked Chinese culture and Chinese people. But Chinese people were so shy that they did not like to talk with foreigners. And there was another reason that foreigners always had lessons in the Third Building, and there were few Chinese students taking classes there. They always saw and talked with their foreign classmates. They really wanted to talk with Chinese students in Chinese or English. I found his Chinese was quite good.
She first came to China as an exchange student in 2007 for a year. After one year’s break, she came back this year to study further.
She told me she had visited many places in China and that she liked China a lot. and we soon found we were the same kind of person who liked talking a lot. Besides that, we both liked shopping and we promised to shop together later.
When we met, she was with a little boy about 5 years old. She was so young, and I was so surprised because I mistook her as the boy’s mother.
Before that, I am too shy to start a conversation to a stranger, not to say make friends with a foreigner. And after I did that, I found it not hard at all. What makes me happy is that, some foreigners cannot speak English as good as me. And I am confident to communicate with foreigners now.
I met with my new friend Nancy in the internet center of SYSU about a week ago. Her computer had some problems. It could not link to the internet. At first she spoke Chinese to me but not very fluently. So I just know she is a foreigner. Then we talked in English. Her English was better than her Chinese. Maybe she usually used English to talk with her classmates from many countries.
When I just solved her computer’s problem we had a short talk. And she came from middle of Vietnam. She had learned Chinese in SYSU for about half a year. She chose SYSU because Guangzhou was near Vietnam and its weather was like her motherland too. Not like Beijing it is too cold in winter. But when I asked her why there were so many foreign students from Korea. She was also confused. Using her reason they should went to Beijing not Guangzhou to learn Chinese. I think maybe it is easier to in Guangzhou. There is little limit to the foreign student. But it is only my guess. Then I asked her a question which was appeared in networks forums in China few weeks ago. It is said that many women from some part of Vietnam which is neighbor of China want to marry to the Chinese people because Chinese living level was much higher than Vietnam now. I wanted to know whether it was true. She just laughed and said that maybe this phenomenon was really existed in some part of Vietnam which is neighbor of China. But she did not live there so in her city there was no this kind of phenomenon. Then we talked something about Chinese language. I told her some method to learn it. I hope she can master Chinese as soon as possible.
Something we can make it even it seems very hard. I am afraid of communicating with the foreigners before ,the reason may be that I lose self-confidence or other. But once I did ,I found it is very interesting and easy.
I have three foreign friends whom from different countries. One is Sora, she is a beautiful girl who comes from Korea, and she study Chinese in Sun-Yat Sen University. She can speak Chinese ,English and other language a little. Besides ,she always talk with us tenderly. With another friend Liu Chunhua, we three had a dinner at the student 5th canteen , after that we went to the ZhuJiang-River near the Northdoor, there showed a music party that day by chance. (Sora just kown my Chinese name Guo Yuanyuan)
Another friend who from the Sierra Leone is a black man ,Maurice, he and his friend Joe attended the International Cultural Festival, so do I .I knowed him in the Xiongdelong on Saterday,21th, a few students with me had talked a long time with them. After the Festival we leaded them to the south lawn and told this is place we have a English Corner everyweek. By the way, the activity such as the International Cultural Festival is good for the student ,we can learn a lot from it ,so I think most of us will enjoy and support it .hehe~~~
I also have a Japanese friend whose name is, she is a very very beautiful girl and looks like a Chinese. But I haven’t got any chance to invite her to go out or do other things, perhaps I can get her next week.
L
After the receipt of the teacher’s e-mail, I knew that I can find the one I want to find people in the English Corner .On a wednesday, I came to the English Corner (this is the second time I came here, you know) and met him. At first, I thought that he was a Chinese but after introduce each other ,I realize that he is from South Korea. He was also coming here to practice English, to be honest, his spoken English is relatively poor , but Chinese is quite good. He’s majoring in Chinese at Sun Yat-Sen University. His father did business in China, and blieved that China’s development would be very good. So it sent to the school.
He said very much like Chinese culture, especially food. He ate a lot of Chinese food, and he hopes to pool the Chinese food.
We were talking about very pleasant, although less than an hour, but we had established a profound friendship. I was very happy to know him.
