An American woman married a Iran man in the US.After the husband went back Iran and insisted on living there, the woman escaped back to America with her daughter.

The American woman didn’t like an Iranian lifestyle since she was born in America, what she heard everyday is all about how teiible the country is.So when she got Iran, she wanted to leave as soon as possible, even she was welcomed warmly by their neighbous. It’s not only conflict between the couple but also the conflict between two different cultures.

Yes, she is a superwoman. Mother’s love can be so much powerful that we can’t imagine. In my perspective, she is a good mother. She is very brave and persistence. She can leave more easily without her daughter, while she deny the opportunity. As a non-religion woman, it is hard for her to surge into a religion society. At least, she tried but failed. But I believe her husband should be blamed. If he treat her well and never abuse her, maybe the situation will change. But he regards her like other Mosque woman, so that’s the reason why she tries to escape. And the most important , the husband break his promise and lie to her. She even don’t know the truth and don’t have a choice. If she knows the truth, she would not come. She escapes for freedom. The road to freedom is too hard but it worthy it.

The life in Iran for Betty was completely strange and rather to say terrible and horrible, for Iran was in an unstable situation. What’s worst, the Iranian men didn’t respect women and taught women to be like sheep, which was unbearable for Betty, an American woman. Thus, Betty took her daughter and they fled together, overland to Turkey and then back to America with the aid of people-smugglers. Actually, many women and children were held against their will in foreign countries.

I don’t know whether it’s the true representation of Iran, because I google not without my daughter after I watch it and find out there is another Finnish movie called without my daughter aiming to show the lies in the American film and tell the true story behind. Of course Moody in the film is to be blame for his violence and forcing Betty to stay in a difficult situation.
Religion is mysterious and I think there must be something inappropriate, while we have to respect it.

From my perspective, she is such an excellent mother that she insists on living in the USA with her daughter. As a foreigner, she cannot adjust herself to the life of Iran, but she tried her best, while she failed at last. I believe the conflict between two different cultures is of significant importance. Therefore, when she got to Iran, she left there sooner, and she escaped. After watching the film, I know life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get.

The woman’s terrible experience really shocks me, the American culture is really different from the Iran’s. Their way of treat woman is that different that I think none of the Americans could adapt to their way. After seeing that film,I really think that the husband really treated his wife very bad. What made me very angry is that he did want to prevent his wife to go back to America and his action to her was terrible. I think that what made this bad scene is the two different country’s cultural custom.

    It’s a true story!
In 1984 Betty and her four-year old daughter accompany her husband to Tehran where they are to meet his relatives. What started out to be a two week trip turns into a nightmare! After the two weeks, Betty’s husband won’t allow them to go home. For months, Betty and her daughter Mahtob are yelled at and even beaten by their short-tempered “master”. Betty eventually finds people who will help her out of the country but not her daughter. She refuses to leave her daughter and waits. Someone then offers to smuggle them both out of the country.Betty is a so great woman!

  • Robert PG6

Although Moody often beat her, but she still did not to give up the idea to leave Iran . She failed again and again, but try again and again, and finally returned to the United States. That is the best interpretation of the American spirit.

If we must choose one between our country and family, which should we choose? This movie is about that. Moody chose his country, but his wife and daughter suffered from injustice. His wife chose family and her daughter, she is a great mother.

On the face of it, this is a story of escape. But the topic reflecting from movie is not just escape. Any individual destiny cannot get rid of the influences of the times. The reason of conflict happens is not only the two completely different backgrounds between husband and wife, but also two completely different cultures between the state and society.

This was a true story. But I cannot believe how a husband could do such thing to his wife if he still loves her. Betty is a great woman, and mother’s love is great in every country all over the world. She tried her best to let her daughter leave with her, unfortunately she failed. But she let us know how great mother is. From my point of view, husband and wife both should think more in the other’s position.

  • Tracy PG3

The movie really shocks me. Do not marry a man who comes from a different culture, especially from an Iran culture. I can not tolerate husbands beating their wives. The most unbelievable thing to me is that Iran women adopt to their husband’s domination and become oppressors of other women and anyone who is not being Islamic enough.

  • David2 PG 6

It is so hard for a mother to escape from this situation with her daughter,I really wonder that how a differnt culture can change people to be that bad.

  • John PG6

I don’t think there is something wrong with Moody, because it’s the culture of Iran, he may be a very good man in the eye of Iranian.
I think the biggest mistake is the marriage of the two persons with different culture background, if two persons can’t change their mind to adjust to other’s custom, they should not get married. However, I really appreciate the courage of the woman, Betty, it’s too hard for such a woman to escape from her violent husband in a strange country with her daughter, and I should learn the spirit of the woman that sparing no effort to get my happiness.

Today, we had a discussion in the class about the movie named without my daughter. And I’m shocked to realize that Betty was not a good mother even she was not a good wife after the discussion before which I’m not sure whether she was a good mother or wife. She stole their daughter letting she not saw her father although she just wanted to give her a better life that she defined. She always thought things in her own way. But I also don’t think the husband was right, he lied to his wife and daughter. After they arrived at Iran, he changed a lot! In one word, the root reason in this marriage is no effective communicantion.

  • Billy PG2

Betty is a great mother. She tried everything to get her daughter and her out of the hell. There are so many risks she had to take. I was totally worried about her safety during the movie.

  • HenryPG6

No one would like to live in Iran at that time, because the country had nothing but troubles.Thought she “stealed” their daughter from her husband, depriving her daughter of father`love,I still think she is a great mother. All the efforts she made was not only for herself but also for her daughter`future.Imagine the situation in Iran, people walking on the street with guns,God knows whether she will be killed. If I were her,I would the same thing as she did!

  • Ken PG5

This movie makes me feel disappointed with Iran’s culture. They discriminated women. In their country women must wear clothes to hide all their bodies except their faces. Man will feel their wife as their accessories. They can kill them if they like but will not violate the law. Betty can’t live in that environment so she must escape from Iran; she is a good mother, because she won’t let her daughter repeat Iran women’s paces.

  • RosePG2

This movie tell me that Iran’s culture is terrible, women does not much freedom compare with America. Betty, well,in my eyes, she is very brave and smart women, her experience in Iran is so terrible, these does not let her down, and she is a good mother, she loves her girl so much, though she had to stand her husband’s beating, she did not leave without her girl, how great is the mother’s love!

  • damon pg2

The love of mother is the most wonderful thing in the world , she gives us all but want nothing from us. Iran is a hell for women at that time . Betty should have opportunities to get out there alone but she tried every means to get her daughter out of the hell. When I know it is base on a real story , I really shocked.

  • MikePG5

First, the American culture is really different from the Iran’s culture. Hence, the husband Moody may have the opinion that Betty is his property and he can treat his wife at his emotion. Betty feels worse and worse living in Iran and she decides to flee back to America. She fails again and again but she doesn’t give up escaping with her daughter. She loves her daughter very much. She doesn’t want her daughter to grow up under such harsh circumstances, so she takes her daughter together with her to escape out of Iran and finally succeed.

  • TimPG6

When the movie was over, there was one idea coming into my brain-China is the best.Never try to make it worse, but to make it better.Betty and her husband didn’t communicate with each other, which caused the problem. But I still have sympathy for Betty, because she was cheated and scolded by her husband.I feel that she is selfish, she took her child back to America without considering her husband. But I think it can be forgiven.Mother love is great.

  • Mike PG 5

After watching the movie we all thought Betty was right ,Moody should be blamed ,however ,after Professor told us the background of the story, I think we all neglect Moody’s right, we just focused on the conflict between them and Betty was abused ,we know little about the Muslim culture and our mind was influenced by western ideas . What’s more, most Chinese could not accept the idea of Muslim marriage and always show mercy to the weak ,that caused we all thought Betty was a good mother .

  • Bill PG2

This story depicts a bad international marriage,it reflects the culture conflict between the East and West. In western countries, women have the equal rights as men, they can eat in the same table, they respect each other, they can work together. But in some Asia Arab countries, women are still deprived such privileges. It is not very easy to break the traditional culture of such a long time. For the Chinese people, one hundred years ago,we also have such stable culture characteristic, most of the revolutionist with the Liberty and Freedom ideology struggle for the rights ,they break down the Qing Dynasty. This is a era for China step into the modernized country.

  • SofiaPG1

I’m surprised when Moody hit Betty in her face.In America he is just a gentleman.Oh,man.Although I can understand his pressure from his family and culture,I still think his abuse is unforgivable. And Betty is right to take their daughter away as in Iran women are near-slave.I believe every mother will do that.

  • Andy PG 1

I don’t know how to express my feeling. Different culture has different rules. It is apparent that it’s inhumane to treat woman like that, everyone should be respected and have freedom to do what he or she want to. As a mother, Betty is great. And from my point of view, religion seems strange in Iran and their behavior is hard to understand.

  • Edward PG2

Unification of the state and the church is so horrible.Iran at that time is such a good example.I felt terrible watching the movie.Anyway,it’s a good movie.
PS.The actress Sally Field played the role of Betty the mother was nominated for the Worst Actress of Golden Raspberry Awards.I can’t believe it.

  • PeterPG1

Sometimes, the culture difference really matters!

  • Susan PG 1

After watching the movie, I’m not happy at all. How could Moody treat his wife like that and at the same time saying that he loved her very much and would not let anyone hurt them? He was the one that hurt her. Through this movie, I’ve known more about Muslin. I understand why there are some foreign student in the school wearing modest clothes and covering their forehead even though it is very hot. It is so strict to the women. I’m glad that I live in China. This movie makes me doubt love. Could someone hurt your lover like this? What would I meet a guy like that? It’s so terrible.

  • JordanPG1

I think the conflict between the couple not only because of the difference of cultures, there is another reason that we shoud not igonre–less of communicate. In fact, many of the couple divorce at last not for the finacial problems or other problems, but for lack of effecitive communications!

  • Steven PG 1

I think the root cause of Moody and Betty is that there is no trust between them. They don’t believe each other, and they lie to each other.I think this destroy their marriage.

  • JulliePG1

In my opinion, the husband is so horrbile,at any case ,he cannot do domestic violence.Women in Middle East country are property of their husband, they have no any human right,I feel so happy being a Chinese.

  • Jane PG3

It’s quite a different world that we have to face with instead of what we think it should be. The gap between different cultures should be encountered with deep to soul communication. Everyday there is going the conflict among people with different beliefs. It is a sorrow for human beings.

  • Chuck PG6

Different areas could have totally different culture ,we should respect each other. Before we decide to stay in different countries, we should consider carefully and then respect their orders.

  • Jerry PG6

Betty is a good wife. In order to make her husband happy, she went to a strange country which was so dangerous. I wonder why she merried such a man.

  • Jack PG 3

Betty is really strong! This movice is a tragedy! I now know that women in Iraq are so unequal to men that they are just the property of their husbands. What impresses me most is the Betty’s husband’s saying:”we are in my country now,you are my wife, you do what I tell you ,do you understand?” It is terrible!

  • Sarah PG 2

In my opinion,Betty is a goog mother and a good wife.If she divorced with her husband, she could leave without suffering so much pain, but she counld’t leave behind her daughter. What’s more ,this’s the culture differences that made the sad story.
