EFL/ESL Teaching in China: Questions – Questions – Questions
This article raises numerous fundamental issues which appear to have been overlooked by China in its exuberance to embrace EFL/ESL teaching as China rushes to join the new world order and partake of its share of the global economic pie. This article establishes a solid and fundamental legitimization for asking the politically incorrect, controversial and sensitive questions but leaves their final resolution to the language teachers, graduate students and linguists who have the inherent fundamental duty to seek the answers. (2007) Frontiers in Higher Education, Ch. 10, Nova Science Publishers.

With the development of china, these kind of questions are given more and more prominence to government even all over the china. But for development, we must envisage this sort of questions. But it’s difficult to solve, it’s complicate to us. It needs a lot of coordination of all aspects. It’s a package deal. And now, what’s we need is to learn English well to prepare for the further of ourselves and the counties.
With the development of the current society, English study has become a necessary language mastered by all over the world. But we Chinese people always speak English loudly very well, how do these questions arise? Perhaps just as this book “Frontiers in Higher Education “said, this mainly depends upon our higher education system. I think most of reasons are aroused by that. As if we study always in order to acquire a university diploma. I hate this idea, in my opinion, a high diploma doesn’t represent anything but shows that you have learned at school for many years. For developing our country’s economic and extending our culture and communicating with other cultures in any other country, we should realize our disadvantages and reform and innovate it in the future. In addition, even we now cannot change this state according to our current international competition, but we can change our opinions about English study, and view it as a responsibility and try our bests to study it as possible as we can, at that then we will form an environment for speaking English, and we will easily realize our education system’s innovation, and our country’s economic level is bound to rise spontaneously I believe that time will soon come to one day. This is my opinion about it.
For most people, the purpose to study English is not so clear. And it is impossible that all people in China can speak English frequently. Most Chinese are shy and unconfident, and they don’t like talking to a foreign actively. So the situation appears that Martin mentioned in his article. It is true that many students don’t like learning English, just because the government, schools give too much emphasis, which pose a big pressure on us. I think if English is not integrant in our future job, it is unnecessary to spend too much time on it. However, if it is vitally need, so study English well from now on.
After reading this article, I have got a question. When it refers the success of EFL/ESL teaching in China, what is the standard of this success. Suggested speaking excellent English of each person is the standard, what will happen? As we know Even Chinese as the first language can not reach the goal, can English as a second language in China achieve it? If not, how can we judge it is a success or not. In my mind, language is more a tool to most of people and the fever of learning English in China is trying to make the future life more convenient. So the main purpose of learning English for all the people is to make an improvement of general English level. Most need the basic skill of English, only a small section, like us, need a further studying.
We have many things to do.To sovle any of these questions is too hard.Should all chinese learn english?I think it is not necessary. The policy that we should learn english in our early years exist many years. It is hard to be changed.I think we should learn it in the college .It is not too late to learn. Is EFL/ESL teaching in China a case of the blind leading the blind?I think maybe it is.Many english teachers in China haven’t a qualification, but they have teached english many years. We must qualified the english teachers strictly. If the teacher himself don’t know it how he can teach. It is inconceivable. This is very important.only if the good teachers could teach students who are very good in the end. There is a long way to go!
It is very important to change China’s education system, especially the language teaching system. While teaching some kind of foreign language, not just Enligsh, but also Japanese or any language else, the Chinese teachers care too much about the grammer and vocabulary but not how to encourage students to speak out. On the other hand, many foreign teachers are not teaching English but just indrotucing foreign culture or something else. The change must begin, though maybe it will bring in new problems but it will be better than now. And we will solve the new problems by new changes.
EFL/ESL teaching in China is not so satisfactory. After learning many years of English, most of the students only develop their “Mute English”. However, it’s not fair to blame only the students, teachers and linguists. In China, every policy is made by our government. If the government wants all the students to learn English then we have no choice but to learn it. We have to pass various kinds of English tests to go to college, to graduate from college and to get a job. Most of the English tests in China focus on grammar instead of the acquisition of the language. In my opinion, the language teachers in China cannot choose the way they teach their students, because there are teaching plans for them to follow and if they fail to do it, they will be fired. Most of the teachers understand that not all the students are interested in English; they just want to help their students to pass the tests so that they can continue their education in university. As for the linguists, their job and responsibilities are so obscured and unclear to the public. If we want to change the situation, we will confront many ingrained problems. However we, including the language teachers, graduate students and linguistics should endeavor to make positive influences and try to change the situation.
I do not think everyone can grasp English. But there is no denying that English is a tool for communications.I have studied English for about eleven years. But I do not have any confidence about my English. This article sets every English learner thinking .Actually,it’s a long but comprehensive article. I indeedly feel,EFL/ESL teaching in China is a effective way for us Chinese to learn oral English. In addition,I think in China we should have a deeply scan our system of English learning and teaching.Of course maybe It will be a long process to change this. But we should act now for Chinese furture.Everything is difficult at the start. That is not the reason to answer our shrinking back.
When I frist talked with the foreigner,I also asked him the simple questions like:”where are you from?Do you like China…”Maybe we call it chinese students’ representative questions, and the origin of these questions come from the same chinese teaching style. Our teacher ply too much attention to the structure and grammar of the sentences but ignore the essential of the language. We learn english for we want to communicate with the foreigners,in that globalization is a inreversible trend. Many chinese students have no notion why they should learn english,in their mind learning english is just to pass the entrance exam, they don’t think one day they will use it to intercourse with the foreigners. And our teachers often lead them into a blind world that english is very rigid and hard to use.Maybe there is a long way for the EFL/ESL teaching to go on .If we want to succeed in the EFL/ESL teaching in China, maybe we would better change the educational system ,or at least change our teachers’ teaching mind.
These questions are really fundamental issues which are always been overlooked. We have to admit that there are some defect in our education system. In addition, a increasing number of people will join the army in the future.
What caused this remarkable phenomenon? Personally, there are at least three premier factors contributing to it. To begin with, the government has been forwarding the policy to teaching English as a EFL. Further more, the increasing income resulting from economic growth plays a cardinal part in the changes. Finally, the authorities concerned have made proper regulations to teaching English as EFL.
In conclusion, it is imperative for us to take effective measures to reverse the disturbing phenomenon. To begin with, we should appeal to our authorities to make strict laws to teaching English as a EFL. Furthermore, we should enhance the awareness of people that the environment of speaking English is very vital to us. Finally, we should bring home to people the value of leaning English. Only in this way can we improve our English. Also I believe that we can overcome this difficulty, and we will have a brighter future.
It is a long article and takes me long time to read it. All points in this article are reasonable and have great proofs. Indeed, there is something terribly amiss with EFL/ESL teaching in China. I agree with the writer’s pertinent points. But we never take it seriously because we can’t change any question that mentioned in the article. I studied in the actual system and obeyed the actual rules. I have the same feeling on the things mentioned such as why we take so long time to learn while not to acquire. I didn’t know the points until I studied my master’s English course. As more and more people knew the questions, things will change.
Our chinese people have to acknowlogy that there are too many people learning English. They are students of from kindergarten to colledge, business men from the senior executives to general stuff, country leaders from the high officialss to common service personals. In a word, any time and any where, you will always find so many chinese learn English. But I would like to say, not everyone that learning English truly know why they have to learn it. As to students, they may just want to got their parchments. Some people may learn it to use it. But I think only small part of us learn English in order to use it. I do not think English should be an obligatory course, shall we change it to an elective course? I am looking forward to that.
The article show us some questions about the phenomenon of learning English in china. In recent years, more and more people begin to learn English, which plays an important role in communication, international affairs and so on. Most of us began to learn English form kindergarten to university, even to postgraduate, but our oral English is not well. Most people learning English in order to past exams but not because they like it. So many people whose English is well, but cann’t speak well. I think this relates to the teaching system in our country. the teaching system emphasize on the exams. At present, most English teachers who make few chances to let student to speak but only in the podium lectures. Totally speaking, there is still a long way to go to make English learning more effectively.
4. Can anyone really be expected to acquire English in this hostile environment?
I think it is difficult for one to acquire English in a hostile environment, I remember in my high school, I study very hard to memorize vocabulary and grammar but after improvement for a time, I felt very hard to do the best, to achieve higher level. Now I think at that time I should change my study method. We must use English more and more in our communication, think and express our idea in English. If a language is no longer a tool to exam one’s ability in an exam, but a tool for communication, it will bring more fun , and stimulate our interest to learn.
EFL/ESL teaching in China is a heating topic in the students and teachers.Students start learning English from primary school ,seems not having the end.And the contents of the books are also boring. Moreover, they must face kinds of exams which check on words, grammer, wrting and so on..But the contradiction is more and more sharp. Most students only can pass the exams, remember the words ,however, they can’t speak a complete sentence or give a brief instruction for a foreigner about himself. What is a pity!We have put into so much attention and money, human resources on it.But the result seems not satsifsying. In a word,if we want to change the awkard situation,we must gradually change the thoughts of the ministry of education and the methods of teaching.
It takes me a long time to read the article. There are many questions we have overlooked. The policy demands everyone to learn English and the age begin to study English is earlier as years pass. I began to learn English when I was in my junior middle school, and my younger sister in her third grade, and now students begin English learning from kindergarten. I think it is not a good phenomenon. We take too much time to learn English and the result is unsatisfactory. We all can read, write and listen, but can’t speak fluently which means what we have learned is just mute English. It requires us to do some efforts to change this phenomenon. From my own, now I go to English corner nearly every week to make new friends and practice my spoken English. It is not a short while to make a remarkable progress, but I believe that I will make it if I insist on.
We pay more and more attention for the EFL/ESL teaching in China, but the problem hasn’t been resolved . I think there are many reasons existed, for example ,just a little people want to learn English on a voluntary basis, many learn it for the exam.I think only small part of us learn English in order to use it,so the result is not very good.In order to improve our English,we must change the circumstance and don’t alway think I get the high score then I learn it well.In a word,we must learn hard, speak crazily and take it as a skill!
It is no doubt that there is something wrong with the educational system for long: “What is worse: Students who cheat the system or a system that cheats the students? ” . The defects originated from the beginning of our studying of English , as we just focused on the scores we got rather than how much we learnt. On the other hand , with too much homework to do , we don’t have additional time to speak English or reading English books or watching English movie that will make students ENJOY English . So it is time for government to take a reform to English teaching firstly, they should pay more attention to students’ abilities to use English not just scores.
With the development of China, more and more people should learn English because some situation needs it. But the purpose to learn English may be dimmed for most people because they will not use it after school work. After reading this article, I want to say something about the eighth question. What is worse: Students who cheat the system or a system that cheats the students?
In my opinion, both are worse because if one aspect can be responsible for its own duty, there will not so many bad phenomenons. Student should be suit for the changing situation because they should live under the system. And the system cannot be changed always because the system should keep steady. So it is hard to solve this question.
Nowadays, China has related with other countries more and more, so English is more important and English learning also is very important. From the article we can know that there are numerous fundamental issues which appear to have been overlooked by China in its exuberance to embrace EFL/ESL teaching. We should learn how to resolution these questions, then we can enhance ourselves’ level. Especially the EFL/ESL teaching, I think it is very important.
I must say that thinking these questions sometimes will break my heart. Well, the last sentence said what I want to say. But I still think that it is very important that making Beijing to understand the wrong way. If the Beijing make the decision to change this way, things will get better faster. These problems are very hard for we students to solve. May be what we can do is very little. Just like learn English for us, not for the exam. Then keep talking about these questions. Although it’s like a snail speed, it will change one day.
Questions
After reading that article, I think a lot about the English teaching in China. Just as Professor Martin said we are all mute English learner. After all, this situation is the result of English education in China. When we started learn English, we have been told that we have to master English in order to make our lives. But those years we learn English as a skill rather than a language. We can past Cet4/6, but can’t communicate with a native English speaker. Sometimes, I think our country should create English speaking environment for the learners, especially for those student who past National University Entrance Examination. Before to be in college, English teaching as a standard of criticism on study is understandable, but when in college, English must be learned as a language. Otherwise, it’s just waste the students time.
After reading this article, I find that there are many questions we overlook in our education system. Actually, lots of students study English just in order to pass the examination, such as NCEE, CET-4, and CET-6. Also lots of English teachers pay little attention to create the ESE for their students to speak, listen, read and write English more but test more. I still remember that I had English test every week in high school and I could not feel any enjoyable in learning English. Therefor, it is time for us to recognize such problem and try our best to resolve it.
Minister of Education has just changed, Many people are very interested in next step plan under the Ministry of Education. Education for all people make the rapid increase in the number of Chinese college students. The quality and quantity of students become a social hot spots, they also a social problem. The education of college need to be improved, especially the English educate. Because many student are’t longer to speak English when they graduate from the school. How and what to do is help the student improve the English more practical. It requires people to think carefully.
Facing this question, I think, many people not only me will sigh at EFL teaching in China. The questions like “why we all should learn English?” is asked by ourselves, by the government and even by the whole country. Many of them still have not obtained answers and maybe would not have forever.
We just know that our country is facing international after join WTO. Thus we should regard English as our second language since English is a international language. For so many years, our country indeed makes lots of endeavors to change the percent state which we still can’t master comprehensive English. However, this is not the only factor contributing to our English learning, culture and custom will also work on it. So more thought should be put in the problem.
I really hope one day it is not a problem. And we will not be puzzle by it again. So first I hope I can speak native English and if only each of us would be thrown in foreign country to learn the native English.
I know that in China there are many problems about English education. They are the problems of education system, the teachers and the students. But what I know is that China and Chinese people don’t keep still. They are paying close attention about these old and new problems. All what I know are educational administrators are trying their best to improve the drawbacks. Of course, it’s impossible to comfort everyone. However, Chinese are not conservative. They invite many foreign professors who are good at English education to supervise China. They can point out the problems which Chinese people have not noticed or pay little attention. Besides, they can also express their own opinions and bring up measures. The ESE has improved a lot. Everything is progressed. So I think the English level will lift sooner or later. It’s just the problem of time.
Those question really call for deep thought. From middle school till now,we have been studying english for over ten years, but few of us can speak fluent english.we must say that the present situation is really awfully embarrassing. Are the students not dilligent enough? Maybe no.I think there is some problem in my education system and the environment. Fortunately we have got reminded by those questions. we begin to think and change.
It is undeniable that, the education system of China have some problems. After reading this article, I had a better understanding of this issue.Just as EFL/ESL teaching in China, there are some obstacles which are not be avoided. As we all know, more and more people are learning English, and the reason for this are different. Some people are in order to get a better job, some are for obtaining the certificate, such as CET-4、CET-6,GRE,and so on. Most of them are not with a passion to learn English, but with the pressure to learning. So we make it difficult to improve our English language skills. It is necessary to reform this education system, especially higher education. Although the reform is so difficult, but I believe that there is a chance of success as long as we began to do. As a student, we have to find our own way of learning English, and try our best to avoid the impact of this education system. Since English is very important to us, So fall in love with English and with passion to learn, and work hard, you will achieve great progress in English learning.
For the issues mentioned in the article, I’ve also thought about them before, and they also confused many other peers. from the junior high school I started learning English, actually it is not study English ,it is copy English. At that time the teacher is also a junior high school graduate, she has just finished her fourth year junior school, she herself do not know a few English words. not to mention an interactive English-speaking between us,her teaching methods is rigid, everytime she just wrote down a few words on the blackboard and told us to write with her reading, and the examination is also a test of those things. Exaggeration to say that I am not learning English, I was copiing English. In the later years, high school and University. we learn English just to cope with some exams, for example, college entrance examination and CET 4, 6. All of these years of learning English only focus on those boring grammars and spellings ,but the real opportunity to speak English is rare to see. The Ministry of Education is always shouting to reform, but in the end, what has been changed? What has been Innovated? I do not know, we all do not know. what’s the problem with EFL / ESL Teaching in China ? We are unable to make it clear. Now that we can not change the reality in a short time, perhaps, we can do something to make it better.
After reading this article, I thought about it for a long time, why? What is the purpose of the Chinese people learning English, What role will be played later on in life. In college, We learn English to pass CET-4 and CET-6. we are looking for other purposes to learn English, rather than to go to a real grasp of the language, that is the real problem. This is due to China’s educational background and the environment, and it will take a long time to improvement.
In China, from 1999,the superior education became the mass education,so there are more and more high school graduate can go to university.prior to 1999,the situation that the high school graduate could accept the college education might be not so easy, they had to get a high point in the entrance exam, but today the situation reverse,if you want to,you can go to college. After three or four years’study in the college, you will find that the graduate is loosing their value at the Recruitment Markets, most of them is less competitive, they aren’t qualified for the jobs, and the tuition is getting higher and higher.Above of all, the edution put a burden on the society, but not play a role in the society’s improvement, maybe we should ask:”what’s wrong with China’s Education”.
To be honest, at the very beginning,I study English just because everyone tells me that English is very important,if you can’t acquire English you will fail in the job market. I tried hard to learn English, but felt that it was very boring. Now when I truly know the exact meaning of learning English,I realize that I can also have fun during the process of learning. It is relaxed when I learn it through watching movies. I have some friends whose oral English are also as poor as me . Every week we have lunch or dinner together in order to creat chances to speak English. We can talk about something very interesting happened in our daily life. Maybe there still some students don’t find the interests in English learrning. They force themselves to do something they don’t like, which are very anguished. If we had to do something in a hostlie environment, how can we feel easy and have the motivation to do it ? There are still a lot of problems we can’t solve in a short time. The best way to do something well is that you love to do and you want to do it . I think this is my answer to Matin’s question“Can anyone really be expected to acquire English in this hostile environment?”
In China, there are millions of English learners, most of which are college students, and they study English in universities and colleges.
But most of us know that there are lots of problems in English education in China at present. And how to make Chinese learn English effectively has been a difficult problem to the higher educators. During recent years, the higher educators in most universities have made their every effort to change the English study environment, and it has being successful. And of course they have also contributed to the education course of China, too.
The article questions is so long that it can be a book about teaching English in China . there are so many examples and questions that require me to think why we acquire English rather than study English and how HE help us to achieve this goal. When it’s take me nearly two hour to finish reading , I have a new idea that if I stop attending HE, I will feel a little uncomfortable because if no one ask me to do something to practice my English , I will let it down. So I must train myself gradually and form a custom of acquire English in my daily life. HE class help me a lot.
Why should 1.3 billion Chinese learn English? I don’t think that all Chinese should learn English. All students in China learn English since junior middle school or even earlier. Some students can get great benefic from their good English in their jobs, but most of them seldom used English in their lives. There are many dialect in China, in many cities of China, people speak dialect and seldom speak Mandarin. It is no reason that all Chinese learn English.
In China, we can see almost everything can linked to the country’s politics, so does English learning. Our government require us to learn English, but quite less people in the government use English. It is great wastes of time and money for all students to study English. Just like now we all know it is laughable for so many people flood to learn Russian decades ago. How about today’s popular enthusiasm for learning English?
I do believe that English is very important, it is great help for us to communicate with the outside world. English can help us learn many things and connects China to the world better. But English learning should be a choice for those Chinese who need it, not all Chinese have to learn English.
The article is funny when it is very educational. The old system of EFL in china is inevitable impacted by the current wave of education revolution, but still unbreakble. Revolution needs someone(here, maybe one generation) to sacrifice, but no one want to and no one should do. So the old system maintains, although more and more foreigners come, the change made by whom is only in quantity, but not in quality.
There are many “Chinese Characteristics” that we have already got used to them. Though I strongly against them sometimes, but I think if we break the rules, it will be more complicated.
I have no idea why I learn English before. Maybe just for find a good job or pass the CET exam. My intension was not clear and I had no significant improvement in English. Two years ago, I got to the lab and did the research. I recognized that English was a tool for me to read the papers of my major so that I can get some new ideas. Also, English was also a tool for me to communicate with the foreigner scientists in the international conference.
Now, my intention is clear. I want to be a scientist, and English is one of the abilities a scientist should have. I practice my English all the time, read the English academic papers, write English academic papers.
I think that these questions have greatly affected our English level. Many people in China including me have learned English for many years, but our English is not very good yet, especially in listening and speaking. It mainly results from the existence of these questions. At the present time, the problems are very hard to solve completely. However, we should try our best to change our way of learning English and take more practical actions. With our effort, the questions can be improved to some degrees and our English will make good progress.
Actually, there are so many questions in this article that it is thought-provoking. Maybe we learned English in the wrong way before. English is not only including the word and pronunciation, but also the culture of the west. Every language has its own cultural background. We can’t understand well about English for we have the different social environment from the west. That is why we need to create an ESE in the campus. In order to make progress in our society, it is useful and good for both ourselves and the country that we use English as a tool to understand other countries, communicate with different people from different culture and improve ourselves.
Teaching English in kindergarten is very difficult for a foreign English teacher at present time. In my opinion, now the Chinese teachers in kindergarten are bad at English, especially speaking English. So they can’t communicate with the foreigh English teacher. I think if we want to promot the English of kindergarten we should employ the Chinese teachers who are good at speaking English. Of course, they should be paid more, so the conflict appears.
In middle school, the students always have to face the entrance exam of the unversity or college, and they have to do a lot of exercise to prerare for the exam but not speaking English. Meanwhile speaking English is not good for passing the exam. As a result, the junior and senior students don’t spend any time to speak English.
In college or university, the students also have to face the exam, but they have the time to practise English. And there is a problem that most of the students are not good at English and they will be very shy to speaking English in front of others. And the English environment is really very very important for learning English. How to creat the environment is easy to answer. But the action is very difficult. In my opinion, it depends on ourselves and we can creat the environment by ourselves if we really want to promot our English. For example, somebody can talk with himself or herself if he or she don’t have the partnar to talk with. And one can translate the things around himself into English and talk, think in English.
I think it is very common and usual to have these questions during the development of a country, especially a developing country. We can look back upon America 50 years ago, there were many questions too. But when we find questions, we should solve it as soon as possible before questions make seriously bad results. The more important thing is that we should prevent questions that have happened in other countries when they faced the same situation like us now.
China’s educate system has some problems, this is a fact. But i think even if a perfect educate system can not make every chinese person speaking fluent in english, and not every chinese person speak chinese very well, there are fact too. So i think the system has not big problem, problems are in ourselves.
We should find problem in ourselve,of course we should pay attention to the problem of system at the same time.I think if we want learn english well, diligent is come fist.
I don’t know the situation in Korea, Japan or other countries where people are learning English. But I guess there must be a mess for English education in those countries, if it’s not nowadays, it’s at the very beginning. Considering the circumstance, one will not be surprised with all these crazy education in China. All of you say that Chinese people are reveling in learning English. But the fact is that we are forced to be reveling in learning English. We have to English to find a good job and be in rank and fashion. Few of us really love English. We are so tired to deal with numbers of English exams. Who cares what HE suggests. So there isn’t ESE in China. It isn’t gonna be fine until we treat English in proper way.
These questions are good and different people will have different answers and of course there are no definitely correct answers in my view. People who have benefited from English will advocate that we should learn English and I wonder how much repay we can get from English. It is also hard to answer because no one will make a guarantee to you and if we know more about that we will not ask that why 1.3 billion Chinese should learn English (it is a political question and not suitable for us to answer) and people will say, “It is good for me to learn English” instead. The gauge of success in EFL/ESL teaching in China is various. I have heard that when some people are proud of their success in some fields, other people may say they are in failure. It seems to be paradox, however, it is normal because no exact answer exists and the comments only rely on what you want to achieve. In my opinion problems are always existed and can be complaint and it is wisdom that what we can do is to reduce them and make them better.
Sometimes, some idea just come to my mind.Maybe not everyone need to learn English well, including college students.People are talented in different fields,if someone wants to get great achievement in special field,he needs to concentrate on it.Since he has his own hobbies and his interest,he also give time to them.If he really doesn’t like learning English,it is difficult to teach him.In this situation, maybe he just need to learn basic English which can help him with his work, hobbies and interest.China is a country of five thousand-culture,however,many students cann’t learn Chinese well.English is first?Of course, many work hard on English, because it is useful.I think
considering English a interest is good so that we can learn it with enjoyment.
There is an African proverb that “It takes a village to raise a child”, the same is true for English teaching, it is not only English teachers or linguists’ responsibility to ensure that every Chinese get proper English education. The whole society, especially the Education Ministry should look into this problem. The first and foremost problem to be solved should be why we are learning English in the first place. If it is for cultural exchange, then there should be more emphasis on cultural activities in English speaking countries. Or if it is for the sake of economic development, then business English should be taken more seriously.
These questions exist commonly in English teaching in China. Today, our country is paying more and more attention on English teaching, but it is still not satisfactory. During our long English study years, I find the most important problem is that the English teaching is not effective for us. That may because the chances for practicing our English are not so many for us. But English is a language that we must practice more after we learn the words and grammar. Therefore, I think EFL/ESL teaching in China should be improved by adjusting the approaches.
In modern society, each country want to get a share of ecnomic pie, so does china. To some of the big city near sea such as guangdong, forengn trade has contributed to majority of it’s GDP with the swift development of transport globally. Definitely we need more and more talented persons mastering English to communicate and trade with foreigners. That is why our country has been popularizing English studying in recent years. tirty years ago,Deng Xiaoping released the great policy of reforming and opening we have benefited from so much. no communication,no openning.
I think the problem of education system in China can not be solve overnight. It need everyone’s effort to focus on it.The main objective for learning a language is using it.That means the language is supposed to be along with our daily life. But for many years, our brain is filled with words and boring grammars. And as the day goes by,we may foget those things and I think it is useless for the work we have done before to a certain extent.Take something for example, the oral speaking is not easy for most students because we do not speak too much.As we know, practice is important for speaking. So I think it is really necessary to make a reform to deal with it.

In my opinion, if English is not integrant in our future, it is not necessary to spend too much time on it, but in actual, it is very important for us, so studying English well is critical for us
