Althouth I do notice the difference between written English and spoken English, I believe they have a lot in common. Especially when I want to present my ideas and have academic argument with others in English(That is what my daily English conversation talk about), I do need to memorize some phrases and sentences. By memorizing a great English article, I am able to learn the way of how to think in English logically and appreciate the beauty of this language.
I have no idea about the concrete difference between speaking English and writing English. When writing English text and speaking English, I just choose words one by one after dealing with the meaning of Chinese. In daily life, I try my best to pick up some formulation of articles I read, and memorize the phrases. However, it’s no help to improve holistic English. I often forget words met before, and could not be comprehensible when I make English introductions without an dictionary nearby.
WRITING VS. SPEAKING,For most people this question is irrelevant, as most people speak English like Written English according to which they had been taught in many Universities or colleges.
It is essential to distinguish each other, as overall the two are not actually quite similar. Creating personal English speaking environment may be the only approach could make sense, just as you have said.
I think most of Chinese student is good at writing English but not very good at speaking English. In our daily life, we talk to each other in English in relaxed way, and think English is just a way to communicate, not necessary to make it very complex, only if the others can understand. So my writing and speaking both are not very well, I should pay more attention to them.
Last Tuesday we learned a long word “supercalifragilisticexpialadocious”. It is such a funny word that means “very good”. I practiced again and again, trying to blurt it out. Later I found the word recorded in the on-line urban dictionary. This word is quite unfamiliar to me, since I have never ever met it in a book or an article before. That may be something we only use in daily conversation while never use in written English. Now I am not sure to distinguish a word whether it is written English or spoken English. But I will notice the difference between them and try to avoid mixing them up.
Today I have talked with my classmates about spoken English. I think spoken English is as important as written English. As we know, written English is formal and spoken English is informal. This is because written English requires more about vocabulary, grammer, phrases and so on. While spoken English is more flexible,we just need to express our meanings correctly, it has less requirements in vocabulary, grammer than written English. We just need to talk freely. However, our education system pays more attention in written than in spkoen English. We may write a nice essay, but can hardly communicate with others face-to-face. This is an important problem we all had to deal with.Although both of them are useful in future,I will pay more attention to spoken English at this stage.
In my level, I’m just trying my best to make my words mean what I mean.
I think both writing and speaking are very important in the study of lauguage. But most of our students are better at writing not speaking, so we should make more efforts to improve our speaking skills in order to adapt to the need of communication in our society. Just for me, I like watching english movies, from the movies I can learn many things, such as the slangs, useful phases and so on. Yesterday I watch a film named lost in translation. Lost in translation is a movie about culture shock, the theme in which is my favorate film style.
Yes, I know there are differences between; and both of them should be practiced as frequently as possible. We study English not only for writing or speaking, but also to communicate with the world. If we want to tell our opinions to the others, we must know well about their language, at least make them understand what we are talking about. I think I’m right in this opinion, don’t you agree?
I have noticed this interesting phenomenon for a long time that there are different kinds of knowledge in our daily life. Some can be written down and passed down such as science, while some can only be felt or be used by communication such as common sense. In our daily life, each of these knowledge plays an indispensable role. Many people may don’t know how to read or write in their native language, but they certainly know how to talk with others in their daily interactions. Written English is professional and public, while spoken English is ordinary and personal. More attentions should be paid to difference between them during learning English .
Superficially, written English is different from spoken English .But both of them must follow the grammatical form so as to make others understand.I think just only, oral English is easier than written English, because the expression of holistic English refers to one or several easy words sometimes, rather than written English need a great deal of phrases. For me,I always express oral English as the form of written English,so before speaking,I can think what I said and how to speak it.Now,I kown that language isn’t to remember on purpose, but speak, talk and conversation.
I’m never afraid of making mistakes when speaking English, but I’m always afraid of make any mistake in writing. When I’m a little girl, I learned Chinese very hard but was so frustrated to find that the adults didn’t always speaking right Chinese. There’re mistakes in most of their sentences. So what? Everybody knows what others talking about and it seems nobody cares the mistakes. Then when I started to learn English some years later, I told myself that even the native speakers may make mistakes when speaking, why do I have to be afraid of that? As the professor wrote above, “written English is formal and spoken English is informal”. I pay a lot of attention on how to write right and formal English, but much less attention on correcting the mistakes in the informal oral English. Am I right to do it in this way?
Through the nearly ten years English studying, we all realise the importance of the writen and spoken English. But, in the china’ education system, they seems have the different status.
We all know that nearly in every exams we have a part named writing. So, in the daily life, our teacher ask us to practice it through handing in the homeworks. Instead, for the spoken english, although many people say it is very important because English is learning for communication, we still ignore it because we all know a sentence that scores are our lives.
In my oppion, spoken English in as important as writen English and if we want to make it better we need to practice it , because practice makes perfect.
In my opinion, written English and spoken English are both important. Just as Chinese language, it also has spoken language and written language, which are equally important for our life. However, most of Chinese students are more adapted at written English than spoken English. Why? I think English education method in most Chinese schools is one of the reasons. We always need to exam written English, not spoken English. And we can read English alone, write English alone, but we usually have no environment to speak English. The only way to improve our spoken English is to speak more and listen more English.
First I would like to say written English and spoken English are both difficult. Each need to spend much time and energy to master it well. So, at the beginning, you have to prepare in your mind. Second I will say, although written English and spoken English are quite different, they have many in common. So we cannot forget written English while we learn spoken English or forget written English when we learn spoken English. The third I want to say is memorizing set phrases or other written English is important to our conversation, at least you know how to organize your topics, how to instruct your sentences by what you have learned during your written English learning.
I am too used to written English to be used to spoken
English. If time be enough,I would write down the words
that I want to express ,and then “read “them. That is the
really problem.Written English contains the time of
thinking while spoken English does not.As a result, the “face” finds a way to pretect itself from written English. What I should do now is to destroy the wall named “face”, and then make my effort to both written English and spoken English.
Thinkink in English and then speaking in English whenever it is the time for you to express youself.
Writing English and speaking English are quite different in fact. The situations are not the same. Writing English is widely used in the book, the newspaper, the report, and so on. It is often used in serious topic. While speaking English is accepted when chatting. Hence grammars and words are not too serious. If their usages exchange, it will be funny. So it is important to differ them. And we would better remember words whether they are formal or not.
There are plenty of differences between speaking and written English. Oral English changes more frequently than written English due to social events, people’s habits and so on. Therefore, written English stay more constant than oral English. Memorizing set phrases isn’t totally useless as long as you can memorize them by putting them in some sentences.
In my eyes, the importance is the truth, and the difference is also the truth too. That is to say, both written English and spoken English are critical although there is some difference between them. For instance, writing and speaking interacts each other all the time when we study and use English. They are two parts of the all-holistic English acquisition. However, written English is much more formal, accurate and serious while spoken English is informal, free and flexible with the help of our gestures and body languages.
I am sorry I had made mistakes on my comment. The last sentence should be”Thinking in English and then speaking in English whenever it is time for you to express youself.”
I am so sorry for that. And the form looks strange.I don’t know why it is.I wrote the words in a “.txt” and then cut and pasted them on this blank. There must be something wrong.
Both of them are good ways of learning a language. First, it is true that written English is different from oral english in several respects, such as grammer, styles, and so on. Written English should strictly comply with the grammer, while oral English does not have to do so as long as people understand what one says. On the other hand, it can not say that it’s useless to memorize the set phrases because, after all, oral English is still English. For me, no doubt my biggest problem is speaking. I have the ideas sometimes. I know what to say in Chinese but I don’t know how to say in English. Of course I realize the reason is lack of practice. in the future,I will try to grasp any possible chance to practice my oral English.
When I write English article, I should carefully think about whether the spelling and grammar are correct. But when I speak English, I don’t need to care about the spelling things. I just need to make others understand what I mean.
From another point of view, I think both the Speaking and Writing are art. A good speech can inspire people. A good article can make people benefit a lot.
Yes!In my opinion, spoken English is more for comunication. So we don’t have to notice grammer when we are speaking English. You just make the others understand what you want wo express. But when we are writing English. That’s more formal. We must always keep many attention on our spelling and grammer.More difficult!
Having learnt English for more than ten years, I find there are many differences between writing and speaking. I should writing an article for one or two hours and can check it many times. However, when I speaking English in the public I have no enough time to think about whether the words are appropriate or not. Secondly, I can use many useful tools for my article, for example, dictionary, internet, books and so on. If I speaking without preparing, it is no chance for my using tools, and require me searching all knowledge that were learnt before and reorganize them to make an interesting speaking.
Written English and spoken English are different, however, they are both important in learning English. In my previous study,I rarely wrote,Needless to say, never spoke. Therefore,I cannot communicate with others smoothly. There is no way to improve either but to practice.
As far as I am concerned,it is easier for somebody to speak English well than do some compositions well theoretically. But it is different in our country. On the contrary, most students can do well in writing instead of speaking because of the lack of English speaking enviorenment. You must open your mouth to speak English so as to make some progress in spoken English. As is known that you have to remember lots of fomal words and phrases and learn the grammer to improve your written English. So be free to speak English and study hard to get access to the writing.
That is ture.Spoken english is just like we chat with our friends in Chinese in our daily life. There will be a lot of idioms and dialects, but we never encounter the situation that we can’t catch our partners words.I think this is because we take our own language easy and we have the same custom with our friends. So we have not the nervous feelings. But everything is changed when we use english to communicate. In our decades of english learning,we paid more attentions to the written english, and did a lot of work to master the grammer,to passed the exams. But amusing,we can not speak it.In my view, the first step if we want to use it just like our first language is that we learn the custom.Being familiar with the language, but notjust mastering the written english. We need to know when use the formal english and when use informal.
There are some differences between written English and spoken English. Chinese students are good at written English, but spoken English is weak for them, because we study English almost use the hands and eyes only, but without mouths. So at last, we can’t speak English smoothly even though writing it well. And we found that, during our studying English, we learn many set phrases and sentences, we can recite them directly when we need to write an English article, but they are useless in our oral English, just like you saying above. So we have to exchange our notion of studying English and distinguish the differences between written English and spoken English.
I think that most of us can’t distinguish written English from spoken English exactly. Because all we have learned is Mute English. We only had to recite the grammar and dictate the words when we started to learn English. I know that written English is formal and spoken English is informal, but all the words or sentences I use may be the same. In a way I renew my mind. I think that maybe Chinglish can be considered as the informal spoken English. But I still don’t know whether we can write Chinglish if I want to publish a paper.
“Written English and spoken English are different.Written English is formal and spoken English is informal.”I agree with it.As a student,I have been learning English for more than 10 years. However,I can’t communicate with others in English. When we write in English,we must use the right grammars and spell the words correctly. The spoken English is less formal than the English found in our textbooks. However, an official speech will certainly be more formal than an e-mail, a text message or an instant message. It does depend on the situation. So I think written English and spoken English are both important. When we are improving our spoken English,we also need to master other skills such as vocabulary and grammar.
Indeed, writing and speaking are different. Both of them are not very good of me, but I would like to improve listening and speaking now. I have developed a plan. first, I will select some articles, then I will listen them for four times, form content, sentences to words. I think this is the first step to communicate fluently. Then I will speak English to anyone who can I meet.
The most important thing is to insist, I think if we all do it, success belong to us.
Yes ,it is true ,written English .is one thing and spoken English is another thing. Written English needs follow grammer rules stictly while spoken English is more causal.Howener ,my spoken is not so good not to say written English. So,I need to improve my spoken English first,Because it will make me more confident and then will be a drive to my written English.
Speaking and writing are two useful ways for communication. They play different roles in our daily life, and both of them are important,so are spoken English and written English.Comparing to written English,I am interested in spoken English much more, although I am not good at it.It is amazing to chat with foreigners in English. It was at that moment that I really tasted the sweet feeling of learning English. It was at that moment I felt proud to kown one foreign language. In my opinion, spoken English is much important and easy to manipulate.
Read and written English and spoken English, which is more important to Chinese university students? In my opinion, we should make a concrete analysis of concrete conditions. Generally speaking, read and written English is used to read information written in English, like scientific information, product instruction book, and communicate with others through sending an e-mail and posting comment in BBS. Spoken English is generally used for human communication. It’s a particular important ability for the people work or hope to work in a foreign company or a officials concerning foreign affairs. So read and written English and spoken English are both important, but for the people who should often cooperate with foreigners, spoken English is more important, for the rest people, read and written English is more important.
Improving spoken English is a hard work because most of us is lack of a English speaking environment. So we must work hard, we can watch more English films, listen more English broadcast, view the articles on English website like China Holistic English and practice English by post comment here. This is a very meaning and interesting work. Let’s come on!
In my opinion.Though Written English and spoken English are different ,both Written English and Spoken English require us to memory some words and sentences. For Written English , it requires us to memory some phrases and some patterns . What is more , Words which are used in Written English are much more complex than words used in Spoken English. For Spoken English , some simple but useful sentences will be OK. However , we need to use the sentences according to the situation. As for me ,Spoken English is easier and more interesting than Written English. I prefer Spoken English to Written English.
Written English and spoken English are both important in our study and lives. But they are different.Written English is formal and spoken English is informal. For example, when we communicate with each other in daily lives,we often use spoken English. But when we write letters, papers, notifications, resumes and so on,we must use written English. In my opinion, spoken English could improve our ability to listen and speak. And written English will improve our writing. So they are both important in our learning English. We could improve our written English through writing English diary and English email. Also we could improve our spoken English through communicating with classmates in English.
There is no doubt that written English and spoken English are different. Although both of them are output, they are used in different occasion and are required to use different words. To be more specific, we need to pay attention to the grammar and phrase when writing. Only in this way, the text that we work out can be professional and serious. However, in daily life, people actually do not care much about grammar or precision. Instead, communicate efficiently is the most important. As for Chinese students, in my opinion, reading and listening will help us learn more. But to use them, it needs us to write and speak as much as we could.
I may know some about spoken English and written English but can’t tell them exactly. Maybe spoken English is made up of short sentences but written English sentences are much longer containing more prepositions and participles. I have watched an American comedy named The Big Bang Theory which not only take written English but also technical English into speaking to make fun.
In my opinion, spoken English and written English are very different, but for us, they are all quite useful. They are both powerful tools to exchange our thoughts. If we want to study other countries` culture, you need to master the spoken English and written English well. Because of their difference, you should use different method to study them. The most important thing is that you should use them in your daily life.
Both writing and speaking are basic skills we should master to help us understand others. However, there are many differences between the process of writing and speaking. Nearly all of us could speak, but not each of us could write. We learn to speak self-consciously, on the contrast, we learn to write by following systematic instruction. Besides, spoken language is usually informal and not in complete sentences, whereas written language is usually formal and more restricted, and it generally requires standardized form.
In my opinion, writing English and speaking English are not so far apart. They have much more in common than in differences. Frankly speaking, I cannot tell the difference between writing English and speaking English in a clear cut way.
However in practical usage, writing English and speaking English may each have their own emphasis. For example, when I was talking to someone, the first priority is communication. And I would like to use simple words and simple sentences, and to ensure that the other party can get my ideas as quickly and accurately as possible. But if I am going to write something, I will choose some beautiful words to make the article look more graceful, and pay more attention to spelling, punctuation and grammar.
So, you see, writing English and speaking English do have some differences, but only a little.
Since we learned English, written English was the only content that we had learned. We were asked to follow the grammar strictly and recite beautiful sentences. So, at one time, I tried to speak English following the written rules. But finally, I found it’s an impossible task. Spoken English is extraordinarily different from written English. Spoken English is for day-to-day communication. Just express what you want to tell, no matter the grammar is right or not. Just speaking!
There are great differences between written English and spoken English. Firstly, the former is more formal and the latter is more causal, so they should be used in different situations. Secondly, written English follows the strict rules of English grammar and spelling while spoken English is not required to do so. Thirdly, the former can’t be corrected once they are published, while spoken English can be correct at ant time even if ill-formed sentence can also convey the meanings to make the listeners to understand. Beside Memorizing vocabulary, memorizing set phrases is also very important. We sometimes may find that we can understand every word in a sentence but still can’t understand what the sentence’s meanings. Because English have some set phrase and idioms that related with their own country’s culture. So memorizing set phrases or other written English is useful in daily conversation.
I agree that there are differences between written English and spoken English, BUT I myself did memorize set phrases or other written English before to help improve my spoken English and it was really useful.
Memorizing makes me use English in my mind before I speak English rather then use Chinese to think about the idea and translate it into English.
Actually, concerning my English studying situation, I worry my spoken English much more than my written English. My learning experience tells me If you cannot use a language to communicate, it’s a dead language for your, not matter how impressive your written English is. Look from the other side, when you can handle and communicate in English fluently, It will not a obstacle for you to pay attention to your written English, perfect it and make great progress. Is it the way we study our mother language?
It is true that there are differences between written English and spoken English, but I don’t think that memorizing set phrases or other written English is useless in daily conversation. Written English requires accuracy, logicality and a large range of vocabulary, memorizing written English can help us to develop an articulate style when we have a conversation with others, at least it can help me to express myself more clearly. Although spoken English is informal, it doesn’t mean we can make lots of absurd mistakes when we speak English because that may make us misunderstood.
Actually, there may exist discrepancy between writing and speaking English according to content of the essay above. However, awareness of relationship between the two seems to be useful for English learning. Because when we write down something like commentary on a hot topic in English, we just think in English and the English education we accepted before will participate this process therefore frequent writing that could help us to formulate our thinking habits in English. Speaking is one means to express ourselves, exactly what we think. Speaking also helps to improve thinking which make us to understand the imports. Finally, seize each chance to speak and write in English for some time, you will find progress often happens in silence.
Both written English and spoken English are the tools of communication. But they are quite different from each other. Written English needs correct spelling, spacing and punctuation. The sentences should be in correct grammar and marked by logical sequence. But the spoken english upholds simple style. Generally speaking, no one would care about the occasional individual small grammatical errors. So spoken english needn’t complete sentences, half of the sentence, including Key words that can express the meaning is just ok. So when learn English, we should pay attention to the differences.
It’s no doubt that written English and spoken English are different. In china, a lot of people have been learned English many years, but most of Chinese people are good at writing English but not good at speaking English smoothly. I think that I am a student like this. I want to change myself, but I can’t.
Every time in my English, I will feeling so anxious, because I am worried my teacher would asked me to answer my questions. I know my English was so poor, especially my spoken English. Now, I don’t dare to open my mouth to speak English. The only way to improve our spoken English is to speak and listen English more and more.
Yes, I agree with what the article said. Many Chinese students may be good at written English, but not spoken English due to lack of practice. When they speak English, they might take it as written English and think the whole sentence over in the mind before speaking it out. They just cannot distinguish the two things. Unfortunately, I am one of them. The reason I think is that we lack of an English speaking environment and we take English as something else instead of a tool of communication. Maybe if we speak English as often as possible, it can give us a better idea on the differences between written English and spoken English.
