’09 ENGLISH MOVIES

FREE CHOICE ENGLISH MOVIE LIBRARY

To facilitate autonomous learning strategies, the Sun Yat-sen University department of post-graduate English teaching for non-English majors has created an English movie library. All of the movies are English language with English or no subtitles. (There are absolutely no Chinese subtitles because they hinder English acquisition.)

The movies may only be accessed through campus computers, by students of the Holistic English Program and may not be downloaded.

All movies have been screened for compliance with Chinese law that prohibits excessive foul language, nudity or violence.

If you would like to see a movie added to the library, post your suggestion below.

It is really a good collection about the movies. They are very helpful for my English study.Thank you very much.

  • Gary.class01

I am very glad to hear the movie library. I like movie very much in my life, and also English I have to learn. So, if there are some good movies in English, I will watch them and learn English all together! It is so exciting. Then, if there is a movie library, I will list all my love movies and then just watch them. It will save my much time.
No matter what old or new, if it can give us knowledge, what we shall be worry about?

  • lynette class02

The movies we watched are all meaningful and funny. Most of them are older than us, so we have barely heard of them. I am benefit from these movies a lot. They told me to do things I like and change the attitude to make progress. They also showed the humanality issues between races, business knowledge, law suit progress, culture shock to me, which widen my horizon very much since I study and major in science for so many years. I have to say I am impressed by these movies and I sincerely thank the one who involved in picking up all of them.

  • Jessica class 17

I have to admit I have not heard of most of the movies in the library, much less watched it before. A lot of movies at the time are commercial, violent and only bringing visual impact but not touching your heart. They’re products of a commercial world however there’re some really good works. Thanks for bringing so many old-fashion but meaningful and thinkable movies to us.
But I’m sorry to say that some videos in the library have bad quality, it seems there are scratches in the screen, maybe because of old age. More new but also wonderful movies can be added into it.

  • frank class17

If you want to learn a culture of a country, the movie must be a good material and it is cost less. So Hollywood is a American symbol to the other people in the earth. Younger like Hollywood movie, it show them the new world they did not arrived. The glory country was full of America dream. Money, personality, fashion, the America value is spread by Hollywood movie very successful. I don’t think it is a bad thing, and the culture shock through this media is necessary to the people. So I think the existence of different is initial important, let more in, let ourselves pick up to learn.

  • Robert-Class16

Those are all classic movies for EFL. I learn more about foreign culture. In this course, the discussion sections have benefited me a lot! Thank you!

  • young_class5

    EDITOR’S NOTE:
THE QUALITY WAS EXCELLENT WHEN PROVIDED TO THE DEPARTMENT STAFF, EXCEPT THAT THE WW II MOVIES ARE OLD, VERY OLD. HOWEVER, AS OF THIS DATE THEY ARE NOT YET AVAILABLE ON THE SCHOOL SERVER. SINCE IT HAS TAKEN DEPARTMENT STAFF 7 MONTHS TO COMPLETE ONLY 60% OF THE LIBRARY, WE SHOULD FEEL VERY LUCKY TO HAVE ANY MOVIES AT ALL.

I like watching movie a lot. Many of my favorite movies are included in the list, especially for my favorite director Quentin Tarantino’s great work “Pulp fiction”. There are also some other movies of this kind I strongly recommend: “Inglorious Basterds” (also directed by Quentin) and “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” (by another famous director Guy Ritchie).
Also, I do agree if the file quality of the movie in Movie Library get better (like DVDrip file, Blu-ray file), more students will benefit from this library.

  • shirley1class4

Thank you for giving us so much movies to see. They make me increase my eye-sight as well as acknowledge the foreign cultures. The inportant award is that they make me improve my English.I am really happy for that and I am really appreciate my professor.

  • jason class2

Waw! That’s a lot of movies! I’m so impressed by the list, many familiar names, most of the movies are so classic, I bet it’s not easy to collect these all, thanks a lot for your great effort. probably not likely to wacth them all, but I will start with the comedies.

  • Betty5

There are movies on the website for holistic English learning, free coffee and tea for students in holistic English lab. Martin’s efforts to build a holistic English learning environment at SYSU are clear to everyone, not only his students. We support Martin’s great efforts. Good luck, Martin in the New Year. What you have done is memorized by us.

  • JaneClass5

Thank you for your creation of English movie library. Those movies I downloaded and watched are very attractive. At the beginning, it was a bit difficult for me to watch a movie with English subtitle. Actually, I even tried to find a Chinese subtitle when watching the first movie “the terminal”. After watching and practice in this semester, I have improved much and now I’m able to watch those movies without Chinese subtitles. Thank you for letting me know that I have the potential and the ability to do so.

  • Monica 5

This movie library is wonderful, especially for those old films, they too hard to find.
    Thank you!

  • Kaye class02

Thanks to this library, I have the chance to watch “real” English movie. Before this semester, I had known that watching English would help to improve my English. But it was difficult to find ones only with English subtitle in other website, not to mention to find some was released several years ago. Now, the teacher shares this library with us. That allows me to enjoy pure English movies which are also educational.

  • summer class15

It is a good news for us to have this wonderful English Movie Library. There are so many classical old movies in the Library, most of them are hard to find, especially the ones have no Chinese subtitle. Before the appearance of this Library, most of us like to see the American television series, however these television series do not reflect the current life in America. Thanks to the classical old movies in Library, we can training our English listening comprehension and get the real historical values and lifestyles in Western countries.

  • Rose class15

It is very evident that this English Movie library is wonderful, which has a good collection of various kinds of movies. In my spare time,I like seeing movies, especially American movies. So, when I saw the list of this library,I felt very excited that many of movies here I have never seen was quite attactive to me.Thanks professor Matin and all people who enrich our lives.

  • John.class2

This library makes it more convenient for us to watch English movies. To begin with, we save the time downloading the movies from the internet, which can be very time—consuming and the resources are not always available. More importantly, the movies in the library are various, but they have one common character—excellent and worth seeing. Though the themes of them are different, each movie, to some extent, will do benefit for us. Not only can they increase our knowledge but also widen our worldview, so I really thank the work Professor Martin have done for us, I hope the library will be richer later.

  • jean5

Thank you for your library,I think it will creat a lot happiness and efficiency. It also provide a condition that we can watch the same movie and talk about it with our schoolmates.

  • Allen class15

Thank you!The movie library is wonderful.I love it very much, though some of them are too old and difficult for us.I hope the library will be more and more intersting.

  • Terry class 9

I always think watch movie is a good way to study English. The library has so many movies which are all meaningful and funny. So thanks for give us such a good resources to develop our English.I supposed my students acquire benefit from this library.

  • Molly class 9

I like watching movies very much, because they are very interesting and they can show different culture form different countries. For my part, I believe that they also can help us to improve our English. Thank you very much!

  • Vickey class 9

    EDITOR’S NOTE:
3 TIMES I HAVE GIVEN YOU THE EMAIL FOR THE PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MOVIES. CONTACT HIM FOR SOUND PROBLEMS ETC.

It can not denied that the English library is very resourceful which provide us much imformation about the western country, such as the history, culture, life style and so on. Through the movie we can learn a lot,but there are some problems lies in it. Firstly, some of the movie provided to us are not available for there are always some thing wrong with the voice. Secondly, we still have not inform a good way to watch the movie, thus we can not have good acheivement in the movie. Thirdly, our time is limited, though there are many movie available we can only enjoy very few of them. May be I think the movie provider classfy the movies, list those most worthing for watch at the top as it’s hard for those who have not seen any of them to choose what to see from all the movies.
So that’s all my thought about the English library. And thanks to the providers for spending time on it.

  • Gloria_class 8

So many movies are great in the English movie library which I have ever seen before. Through this library I have access to obtain wonderful movies which reflected the various aspects of life. Comedy or tragedy, humor or sorrow, all are included in this library. Also these movies inspired me a lot and elicited thinking about language learning from the movie ‘the Terminal’, IP protection from ‘Working girl’, romance in tough situation from ‘Hotel Rwanda’ and so on.
In a word, I learned so many things from this English movie library. It is a big treasure still waiting for us to discover its worth. Thanks to this library and of course thank Professor Martin.

  • White_class13

Although they had been said dozens of times, I still want to say the words “Thank you, Professor”. I didn’t think that one teacher would provide his students with so many movies, I think it’s impossible, but Professor Martin changed my opinion about that. Thank you again.

  • Tiffanny-Class 8

It is a great job what you and your team to do for us. And it is a hard work to collect so many movies. I would like to express my appreciation to you.

  • Ken class14

I always like watching movies. In professor martin’s class, he introduced a lot of English movies to us and most of them are wonderful. I have watched much of them before, but when I watched second time, I thought much and really have fun.
Thank you for your hard work to collect so many movies and I will watch them in my part-time.

  • Chad-Class13

The English movie library contains various kinds of movies and many of them are impressive.I think that learnning English via watching movie is an effective way,we can learn the English language and its culture at the same time .Thank you very much for your English movie library!

  • Joanna class13

I was so happy to know such good news. The English movie library which has so many various kinds of movies will be very useful for us. I think those movies will help us improve our English well even we leave our school. Thank you very much and thanks a lot for what you have done for us.

  • Wow! So many movies! The amount of the movies has increased a lot and given us more choice since the beginning of this semester. Although I can recognize some of the movies I had watched before, it seems that most of them are unfamiliar with me. I should express my thanks to dear Dr. Martin because he thinks too much of us and impresses me most among the English teachers who taught me before. I see, Dr. Martin is a very good teacher and clearly knows that English learning improvement could not be fulfilled in a short term and he cares about the long term of our study.

  • Bruce Lin.Class 2

The movie ‘A Beautiful Mind’ is really worthy of being enjoyed. I watched it in Grade One when I was in senior school. At that time, I couldn’t understand it quite well. For a rather long time, I used to misunderstand many details about John Nash’s behaviours. After realizing the truth of the story, it was really a great joke.
This semester we have watched several movies with English or no subtitles and it did help improve our listening skill and evoke our desire to enjoy them. The English movie library is a good resource for us to better our English. Thanks for whom have contributed to the program.

  • John-class6

I have download a movie ‘spidermanI’. Although I have watched it in Chinese subtile, I think that watching it without subtile may help me to benefit more from it. It is a good movie.

  • kathy class7

I always think that film is a very great art. It shows us a variety of lifestyles, from which we can understand that we do not have the experience of a lifetime. I watched the list of films from the English movie library ,many movies are very classic and reflect us the culture of East and West.
Thanks professor Matin and Merry Christmas.

  • Ivy class 17

The English movie library is a very useful resource. From the beginning of this semester, I have watched dozens of movies got from the library. Besides our assignments, I have chosen some interesting movies as entertainment and practice. I believe this movie library will keep on helping me in future. Thank you for your effort.

  • Katherine Class4

I saw some of these movies several year ago, such as “Singing in The Rain”, which is funny, and I can also appreciate the dance of tap dancing. I will see more movies in the future, and improve my English. Thank you for your help!

  • lily class 17

There are so many movies. it is wonderful. This semester I saw ten more films from the English movie library. In this library, it offers us a great deal of old movies which are meaningful and difficult to find. Thank you very much for your effort. It is useful for all of us, and also gives us the atmosphere to learn English.

  • Lisa Class 17

From my perspective, English movie library is very convenient and useful for us to watch movies , for example, we can spend less time in downloading movies. As is known to us, there are various films in it. Frankly speaking, I have watched a lot of movies from the library. I believe English movie library will become more and more popular in SYSU in the near future. Thank you , professor!

  • Mike class 6

The library is really terrific in this term’s English study. Thank you for providing us these pressure resources. Actually, the graduate is busy with the research study, it is wonderful to give us a chance to relax as well as improve our English.

  • The content in the list of movies above are more than dozens of movies, because they include the all aspects of western culture. If we make good use of these movies, we should learn more about the thought and habit of English native speaker, which will help to improve our English abilities of listening, speaking, writing and reading rapidly.
Just as the old saying that “Few words, many deeds”. Let us enjoy that fruitfully cultural feast of the west as soon as possible.

  • vicky class3

These movies are very helpful. Martin thank you. And I will use it before I graduate.

  • Sonny-class-O2-

Thanks very much for your generosity to share so many movies with taste with us. I will use it in my leisure time both for moulding my temperament and improve my English.

  • Kate class1

I am a lazy person in the field of entertainment so that I always ask for movies from my classmates. Now,here are so many movies and some of them are wonderful, so I feel lucky enough. The only thing I can do is to thank my teacher Martin.

  • Bryant13

I am glad to know that there are so many resourse in learning English, especially Holistic English. In fact ,it is helpful for me.From the movies,we can learn the pure English,at the same time ,we can understang the foreigne culture.I will make it useful.

  • Fanty13

The movie source is really a great help for my English learning, and
I will try my best to make use of it.And I am really greatful to the working group who made the movie online.

  • Tracy-class15

Every movie I watched carefully,I enjoy these movies, and watching movies is really good way for us to practice our spoken English.I’ll make full use of this good source in the future.

  • Evelyn Class 6C

The way you manage the movie in categories is really neat and nice. Thanks a million for this wonderful treasure of guidance and reference. It urges my digging =D

  • Caren Class 6C

EDITOR’S NOTE: ON THE ARTICLE PAGE THERE IS AN IMPORTANT ARTICLE THAT EXPLAINS WHY CHINESE SUBTITLES ARE A VERY BAD THING IF YOU ARE USING THE MOVIE TO IMPROVE YOUR ENGLISH.

The biggest challenge may be there are usually no Chinese titles even no titles in the movie. But it is helpful for our listening.
    I like this libarary!

  • Fion Class 1C

It is so great to download movies in that web. In the past, I often can’t find good movies to learn English. Someone ever told to me that watching movie is the most direct way to learn English. By that, I can touch the real lives of American, to learn their slang and living attitudes.
I thank you for offering us a good movie web. I will use it correctly.
