I can’t agree with you more. The World Bank, International Monetary Fund and the World Trade Organization are, to some extent, the tools for developed countries to squeeze developing countries. For example, as you said in class, the WTO advocates democracy. However, the WTO itself is undemocratic. It seems that the USA has the authority or power to control the whole organization. That is to say, developing countries can seldom share in the global economic pie while developed countries usually share in the most part of the global economic pie or the benefit.
It is really hard to understand Jamaican English for the first time, especially on condition that the subtitle is Spanish.
Except the language, I think the transferred meaning is obvious.
It reveals the fact that developing countries are suffering from those so-called trade organizations.
And what deeply reminds me is that our economic power must be strengthened firstly, or we will be put aside, like many other less developed countries.
EDITOR’S NOTE: IF YOU WATCHED A MOVIE WITH SPANISH SUBTITLES THEN CLEARLY YOU HAVE NOT LEARNED TO FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS. THE MOVIE PROVIDED HAD NO SUBTITLES SO YOU DOWNLOADED AN ILLEGAL MOVIE WITH SUBTITLES THAT TURNED OUT TO BE SPANISH. YOU ARE A THIEF BUT AT LEAST A DISAPPOINTED THIEF.
I think the documentary is a good one. Through a tourist’s sight, it reveals a true and gut-wrenching Jamaica. In the lies of IMF and WTO to prosper its economy by lending it large amount of money, Jamaica gets stuck and has on way to get rid of it. Jamaica’s domestic industry suffers great pain under the unjust import practice; people ‘s life remains in the depth of depression; society endures disturbance. The movie discloses the essence of WTO or IMF or other global organizations by describing the situation of Jamaica, that is , they are created by the developped countries and they serve for them. Therefore, only developping countries unite together and oppose the so-called rescure powers by building more efficient and trustworthy economic trade zone of their own will they fullfill the ultimate success to bring their economy to flourish..
Yes, I couldn’t agree with you more. Only a country is powerful enough in both economy and politics can the country get rid of the control of western powers and ignore the rules established by them.
This documentary successfully showed us the recession of the economic condition of Jamaica. The domestic industries declined when Jamaica truned to the IMF for help and signed the agreement. Obviously, IMF,World Bank or other organizations didn’t treat equally to the well-developed countries, like America, and the third-world countries, like Jamaica. The agreement was unfair to Jamaica. However, every countries, not only the well-developed countries but the developing countries were likely to look at others’ trouble with difference or get profits from their troubles. I think it is mainly due to our materialistic society in which we desire more gain and power.
This movie tells us how people’s normal life are widely affected in Jamaica since its entry of WTO. Yet, the movie tells more than the reality. Since the world war two, the colony age has been doomed, however, organizations such as WTO, world banck backed by the old colony nations become more and more accepted both in developed and developing countries. Surely, the western nations such as USA and UK would be very delighted of the cooperation with the developing countries as the world beocme increasingly smaller even to a global village. Meanwhile, the truth hidden beneath the surface is vastly ignored by many of the members of those west-based organizations. The WTO, in a way, is another name of the symbol of the neo-colony age which is more gentle and peace-loving as it appears to. Nevertheless, its core value–to serve the benefit of its early founders as the foremost priority–is a solid truth.
We should not deny their contributions towards the world’s economy and the globalization as countries are not more connected with each other. There are always something critical in any global affairs while the gaint organization such as WTO should not be only regarded as a promotion of the world’s cilvilisation. It has its own bleak part of the character.
Although Jamaica English is horrible to understand, it is really a meaningful movie. In my eyes, the WTO, IMF or other international organizations are working for those powerful countries. However, those underdeveloped countries, such as Jamaica, are in the struggle of fiscal deficit, so they have to accept the “help” of the IMF or the World Bank in order to save their economy. And from this movie, we all know whether those countries are really helped or not.
The movie shows us the evil side of IMF and other powerful international organizations who actually continually explore the vulnerable developing country on behalf of the superpower in the world. The concept and the mission of the organization seem to be well-intended and bona fide; while under the charge of the superpower, like America, they tend to bring side-effect to the developing country, such as Jamaica. It seems to me that the harmful effects will not end until there is no resource left in these countries for the superpower to seize. But when that time comes, the slavery-like countries are doomed to be at the brisk of collapse, economically and politically. Another event leads to the expiration of this terrible situation is more encouraging–the small countries manage to get rid of the control of the superpower, and an easy way to make it come true is withdraw from such disappointing organization and join a new one, the one whose membership are of the same level of development, and the members thereof have a equal voice in making the decision.
There is no doubt that World Bank and World Trade Organization are the tools of developed countries. Through these organizations, developed countries get a lot of benefits in some poor countries. Even we can say that they are in charge of some countries’ economy, which makes the local people live in poor conditions. I hope a new organization will be created in near future to help poor countries indeed.
This movie has every heavy accent, so I totally understand why Chinglish is acceptable. I take a second time to go through this movie for better understanding. Firstly, I believe organizations like WTO, IMF and World Bank are very kind and help those poor countries for no private purpose. But after watching it, I suddenly get that it serves up for whom sets it. So it is not a surprise for China to quit it if possible. Jamaica is an impoverished country who wants money to develop its economy when it independents from England. Its economy is in great depression and needs money for self-developing urgently. So it seems that they have no choice but to jump into this trap. One sentence gives me the deepest impression that is “you can’t imagine how envious they are when they are looking at you; they will never have opportunities to travel”. When I realized their poverty situation my heart are greatly shocked. Something called sympathy or maybe guilty capture my mind. They want to be rich and they do very hard to improve their life standard, but trade treaties just make it smashed. I admit that I am merciful and can’t help moaning for them. They have to adapt to it and can’t get rid of this nightmare. So instantly I am apprehensive of the fact that we can get rich on the basis that your country is strong.
This movie is really a headache. The Jamaican accent is unbelievable that I had to watch it twice. Though, I struggled hard and cannot understand every line in the movie, I still figured out the main idea. And yesterday’s class where I learned more about a “real” WTO was a meaningful and truth-telling lecture. Martin is just and reasonable with humor towards the truth when he was in class, also he inspired me to think deeper and dig out something we cannot see from the surface. Through the group discussion, we four members exchanged our thoughts and I for the first time felt that as English majors we can also analyze a big and obscure issue within our knowledge. Maybe the answer is not a perfect analysis, but we are praiseworthy, aren’t we? Thanks to Life and Debt, and of course thanks to the great class, I am more confident in myself. I enjoy the atmosphere, and I love the class.
After watching this movie, I feel something different about the IMF. I thought IMF was quite a great organization that it helped the third world countries to put an end to poverty in the last few years. I found that Jamaica who borrowed money from IMF became much poorer and poorer because of the high interests of the fund. It tore up Jamaica’ economy, and the people couldn’t get a good job , they stayed in a poor situation.
The World Bank, International Monetary Fund and the World Trade Organization are supposed to help developing countries to share the benefits and achieve good goals. However, it is not always true. To some extent, they not only don’t give help, but also bring disaster. Just as what they did in the Life and Debt, they made Jamaican live a worse life and suffer a lot. And maybe one day, there are more and more countries acquiting them because of their badness and blaming them because of their wrong doing. But always hope one day they can indeed make sense and benefit most of countries in doing what they should do to improve the economy of not only developed countries but also developing countries.
After watching the movie, for the first time, I begin to know that WTO & IMF may have negative influence in its member countries. As the case in Jamaica, after opening its market, it is even harder for the local people to get a better life. The movie used lots of narratives of the local people to let us get a better understanding of the influences that brought by the so-called HELP of the IMF. Also, I begin to know that “helping the developing countries” is a greatest lie ever told. Those organizations are aimed at controlling the world and make self-beneficial rules for the whole world. We should remember that every country will seek for its own interest, so one nation should give a second thought to the HELP offered by other countries.
After watching the movie, I felt lucky to be born in China. A country’s national strength decides its people’s living standard. Although China is not one of the western powers and can not control the policies of WTO, it has the right to decide whether to be “in” or “out”. China has the initiative to decide its own international status because its increasing national strength, rather than being controlled by other nations.
I can’t imagine those worldwide organizations could turned out to be like that.
These organizations have a good reputation that all the information I’ve learned is about their kind actions, but it finally turns to be a lie. It’s true that WTO & IMF helped some of their members to develop well but it also have these negative influences in its members, too. These bad effects can’t be eliminated, it is these actions that really break our former view of these organizations.
This film makes me feel that the world turns back to an uncivilized world which is full of violence and massacres. It is completely survival of the fittest: the poor and weak are eliminated while the superior are selected. The organization like The IMF is just like a wolf in sheep’s clothing. They make some conditionality’s seem reasonable while actually to make advantage of the third developing countries.
To be honest to say it’s a movie that very difficult to understand what is it said. After watched this movie I knew that WB, WTO and IMF leaded some countries poorer and exploited their natural resources. But I still think they are benefit to developing countries.
Life and debt is a wonderful movie as the way it directed and editted. What shocked me most is the comparison of the two pictures both happens in Jamaica everyday. On the one hand, the visitors from the weathy country enjoy the beautiful sunshine, coze beach and considerating serviice provided by the local hotel. And on the other hand, Jamaican lives a miserable life that they have no job, have no money to cover the health care fees……
This movie changed the image of the IMF and WTO who left an impression on me that those organisations are found to help the countries in need. I realized that those institutes do not make too much contributions to rebuilding the country’s economy.
And from this movie, I got the idea that we should not judge the book from the cover. To draw an relatively reasonable conclusion, we need study it carefully with a serious-mind.
Life for the poor in Jamaica is heavy. But who can be accused of? IMF or WTO? Yes,a half. And another reason may be Jamaica’s political power was poor at that time so that Jamaica signed the bad agreement with the organizations like IMF.
Jamaica’s domestic industry suffers badly pain under the unjustiyied import terms; People of Jamaica remains in the depth of depression and live miserable life.
Life and debt is a good movie that can make us realize organizations such as WTO, IMF which are said to help the developing countries aggravate these countries becoming poorer and make the developed countries richer in the end. The life under the debt is very miserable. Who can help these people indeed? I hope that one day there are organizations helping these developing countries become rich and the people can have happy lives.
Jamaica was the example of the third world country which was victim of the econimic system. I think we should think more about the IMF and WTO. Maybe somedays china will quit WTO if we can’t borden the behavior of the exports and imports.
The movie let me see that the lives of people who live in the third- world countries are difficult under the economic globalization, just like Jamaica. And at the same time I also understand what is the IMF, what is the World Bank through the movie. All of these have caused me to think about the globalization.
I think if these kinds of world organization always want to get benefit from the country that needs them to aid, these organization will not exist long.Their members will break away from these organizations when they can’t get benifit or think there is no need to stay here.Benefit can make them collapse. These organizations is like companys. The contradiction is that they must exist sometimes when a barrel of fund is needed extremely, and we have to accept to be exploited.
After watching this movie, I found the world bank, IMF and other world organizations deceive the developing countries. They lend money to the developing countries under the pretext of helping them. In fact , they will make rules to little the developing countries to develop so that the developing countries will become their slaves . So I think that the developed countries exploit the developing countries in a disguised form
Jamaica is a beautiful country. Its tourism is famous. But from the movie we can see that its peaceful life had been broken since participated in the global finance. Jamaica had much debt and needed the help of IFM to maintain the finance steady. So I don’t think WTO is good for countries like Jamaica. If it is possible, no WTO in this world may be a nice life.
IMF under the guise of “Free trade”, change the backward country’s economy system. Through this film, I understand the IMF’s way, although I know I don’t understand it completely.
I want to say that the intention of economic organization is good, such as it would formate a common rules among all the countries, but later some ambitious people realized that they can gain huge benefit through the rules which standard by them, then the unfair behavior happened. In my opinion, economic battle is a war without gunpowder, but it is more terrible than the war with the gunpowder, i hope the World Bank, IMF and WTO would be authentically carry out their duties.
It is so hard to understand the complex system created by the western countries. But it is so simple to understand because all of them were built to create more profit for themselves. Other countries have no choice but to develop their economy at the cost of destroying natural resources. We compete so fiercely with each other maybe it’s the cause of ending the world.
Nowadays the power of china economic has became stronger and stronger.WTO is just a organic which is controyed by western countries. At the point of my view, when china stronger enough,it will found another organic just like WTO.AS we know that china is the behalf of third world.
The movie really reflects the epitome of the economic globalization. After watching this movie I think that whether and when China can quit joining the WTO. In my opinion, nowadays the China can’t give up the WTO, because the economic of China still rely on the WTO highly. When the china develops strongly and has enough powerful to play a core role in the worldwide economic, when the China has adequate ability and solid foundation to establish an economic organization similar to a WTO in our own country, the China maybe can quit the WTO and develop itself.
The movie is a good way to know what the IMF, WB, IADB etc. adopt current globalization policies on a developing country such as Jamaica. As the third world country which was victim of the econimic system, our China also develop the economy, and become more stronger, don’t let other countries to squeeze us.
The World Bank and the IMF is not friend. Their policies reflect their interests, not the interests of countries, which need help.
It is very difficult for me to understand the documentary movie. However,i use the google of search-engine,and i know what the IMF,WB and WTO is.I believe that china will become a power country in near future.
This movie shows us the truth face of the World Bank, International Monetary Fund and the World Trade Organization , which were considered to assist developing countries to share in the global economic pie by themselves. This may just be the greatest lie ever told.
It is dangerous for these developing countries to get too close to IMF or WB. They are not friends to these countries because both IMF and WB are controlled by some developed countries such as USA. And once IMF or WB had had a contract with a weak country, the country will face a competition with other strong countries. So it is very dangerous.
What we are seeing here, what is so clearly depicted in Life and Debt, is that people have no control over their lives, their country is at the mercy of foreign interests and foreign capital, their government is occupied in controlling them rather than serving them, and people are unable to support themselves adequately with their own labor, suffering from hunger, exploitation in sweat shops, and destruction of their traditional way of life. There really is no more pleasant things.
You really give us a new view on global business. After watching the movie Life and Debt, I think global business is a game played by the developed countries. China is a developing country, so we suffered a lot of injustice in the global market. However in some extent, we need the global market to drive our business. Without global market, we have little chance to sell the products. I think when China has the ability to do business without the free market, we will quit the WTO.
Before I watched this movie ,I think IMF WTO such organization is good for our country’s development. It is terrible !It is not good for the poor countries ,it represents the profits of developed countries !
Jamacia accepted the loans from the IMF in order to improve its economic conditions ,but it brought much trouble to Jamacia itself. There were some conditionalities placed on the loads, which were disadvantages for Jamacia. Therefore,Jamacia had much difficulties on the development.Actually, the policies of IMF reffected the powerful countries.
Before watching the movie,i didn’t understand IMF clearly. Now i know that IMF is created to promote international monetary cooperation,to facilitate the expansion and balance growth of international trade and so on.
After having this class,I have deeper understand of global organization ,such as IMF WORLD BANK and WTO.Obviously, all of these organizations were established by western countries which aim to reconstruct world finance orders and control world’s trade. Coupled with the pace of globalization, the gap between developing countries and developed countries seems can be reduce. However, the developing countries became the slavery of developed countries by the global financial organizations and a series of unfair rules.
IMF WORLD BANK and WTO is “three pillars” of the world economic system.Essentially they serve for the developped countries. For example,Jamaica.
Nowadays there are several international and regional trade organizations, such as WTO,the Association of Southeast Asian Nations,European Union and so on.most of them are established by developed country, obviously it must benefits to them, developing countrys at most times haven’t superiority when they trade with developed countrys.IMF is also founded by developed country, all previous chirmans are come from its.over 50 years passed the gap of living standard between developed and developing is bigger and bigger.so less fortunate country become rich should depend themselves.
I have more comprehension about IMF,World Bank and WTO through this movie and class discussions. Under the guise of providing loans to less-developed or developing countries, these institutions actually operate to control the economies. Within those organizations, China contributes a great deal more than it receives.
After watching the movie,I know that WTO is a game platform for developed countries.WTO is not very good for developing countries like China. In China,we export low-tech products and import high-tech products.Joining the WTO may have a big impact on China’s cultural, political and economic.China needs to become more powerful in the world.
After I watched this movie, I know that the international organizations such as IMF,WTO and WB are not benefit for developing countries. Usually, they help developing countries with certain conditionalities. For example, IMF lend loans to Jamaica, but asking for opening Jamaica’s market and then many foreign products swarm into Jamaica’s market which resulted in Jamaica’s local economy collapsed. As far as I am concerned, China should quit WTO as soon as possible.
Frankly, I don’t know the IMF WORLD BANK and WTO a lot before. From this movie I release the truth about it and understand the difficult status about Chinese government in international organization. The rules are builded to benefit the developed countries and it’s unfair. So we should established new organization and build justice rules for word.
The movie shocked me and made me know the essence of IMF , WB , and WTO . They just served as the tools for those countries who dominated the negotiation and created the rules abided by member countries. In this case , these countries got benefit from the organizations, while ,other member countries became the victims. Jamaican situation made me associate with Chinese situation. Some developed countries who dominated WTO are squeezing China during the international trades. So when and why china would quit WTO again, I can’t agree with what you said in class any more.
